Zoot was a consummate musician. Just swung so hard. As a young singer of 29, met him in Las Palmas but did not realize it. At evening's end gathering my music, a large man in a Hawaiian shirt came to the bandstand and put out his hand. He said "You sing very well, Miss." I replied "Thank you" as I continued packing my music. As I began to leave, Jimmy Gourley said, "I see you met Zoot." I said "When?" and he replied "You were just talking to him!" Many years have passed. Many times when I had self-doubt, I remembered Zoot's words. Zoot and his new bride were on their honeymoon in the Canary Islands in 1971 and he came to work the gig.
Desperate Times I can wholeheartedly agree with you Miss. Met Zoot several times during the 70’s in Holland (before returning to Oz). Introduced by my very dear (late) buddy Wallace Bishop. A onetime swing-drummer, during most of the 30’s, in the Earl Hines big band. I’ve got most of Zoot’s albums and must say that his best, for me at least, was during the Pablo-label years. He recorded several times with Jimmy Rowles, who btw picked most of the (sometimes obscure) tunes. For me Zoot is/was about the most lyrical tenorists around. We don’t hear this kind of inspirational and beautiful Jazz anymore. Good talking too you. Dig & Enjoy & Cheers!
Jimmy's fingerprints are all over the selections. And I love the choice of tunes. I sing many of them because I initially liked them by Peggy or Sass or Carmen, all singers Jimmy played for at one time or another. Of course, we all know of his influence on Diana Krall, whose Scorpio day of birth, November 16, I share except that I am older and certainly not considered famous. Jimmy, Sweets, Dex and others liked my music. Fame is not the first goal when creating music, though it can be a result. Thank you for posting this lesson in creativity. It soothes the bruises that old age imparts to musical warriors.
This album has just popped up on my stream after a sonny Rawlings album finished: truly amazing & the definition of serendipity ; Thier is Good in the Universe 😊 Shaun
By the time this was recorded, recording techniques where so much more advanced than what was available in the 50s and 60s. I agree, one of the best, AND great recording quality too!!!
Indeed a great record, and with Zoot in one of his most mellowest moods. Jimmy Rowles piano playing is fantastic and his choice of tunes are spot on. As already mentioned they made quite a few for the (Norman Granz) Pablo-label. On a sad note; Jimmy's daughter Stacy who played the trumpet and also sung and can be seen on -the Swinging Ladies- live-concert in Burghausen in Germany in 1995, and accessed here on youtube. These 6 girls are really swinging and Tracy is absolutely outstanding. If i am correct she passed away about 10 years ago. But these fabulous Pablo sessions by Zoot Sims are exceptional and thank you for up-loading these priceless recordings. So enjoy & Cheers!
I agree. I really enjoy the restraint the players have. Zoot is quite romantic and Jimmy is mostly a super light touch, which is a killer counterpoint to the main lyricist. Another great Rowles/Sims get together
I remember Zoot saying he really liked playing with these guys - probably meant the jammin' more! But that's how a lot of great albums are put together -
