Humbled by a Giant | Rare sighting of Elephant TUSKER Brings me to Tears

- Kruger Unlocked Ep 22 | Crocodile Bridge - My First Sighting of an Official Kruger Tusker! Nambu - (Sanparks name) graced me with his presence and it eventually brought me to tears! It was simply overwhelming and a moment in time that I will cherish for the rest of my life!
Special thanks to Zein de Villiers for allowing me to use a spectacular image in the video he captured of Nambu earlier this year that is currently on display in the park at Berg en dal rest camp!

Age-wise it is difficult to say as body condition plays a role a safe estimate would have in the region of 45 years of age.
Name-wise, the names appearing on the SANParks website or confirmed through SANParks channels (Tusker project) are the only correct names, some private individuals have taken to producing their own website and naming these bulls with alternative names however these are not recognised by us as official SANParks names and we are not affiliated with any other websites.
Origin of Name: Tsonga means ‘River’ due to this bull's habit of roaming along the full length of the Crocodile River and being seen from the various lodges on the opposite banks, in what is otherwise a large home range.
Range: This bull has a large range, stretching from Lower Sabie to Malelane and Pretoriuskop area.
Special Features: This bull is a challenge to detail due to there being similar large bulls in the same area and the limited identifying characteristics from some angles. Nambu closely resembles Ngwenya from the right side with similar long curved ivory but he is missing the characteristic square notch in the left ear that Ngwenya is known for. The curved ivory on this bull is symmetrical with a deep curve best viewed from a side angle. Both tusks taper to narrow rounded points with the right tusk having a small grass notch at the tip which is prone to breaking and reforming. The left ear lobe is very clean and lacks any easily identifiable nicks or notches. The right ear has the characteristic notches that separate Nambu from other similar bulls. Towards the upper curve of the lobe are 2 v-shaped notches of similar size approximately 20cm apart, below this is a small v-shaped nick in the ear. Towards the lower area of the lobe is a very shallow u-shaped nick with an R0.50-sized hole in line with it approximately 3 cm from the edge of the lobe.
General: This bull came onto the large tusker radar in May 2018 through a sighting from Eugene Martens. Similarities to other bulls in the area lead to several challenges in establishing the differing characteristics to be able to name the bulls and be sure they were not duplicated.

Very true! After this Ep it’s onto some serious lion sightings 🤩🦁but I simply had to honour this boy with something special. Sanparks estimates his age at around 45 years old so he must of had some surreal experiences before

Wow just simply amazing at how beautiful he is. The big tuskers is like at only 23 left. You are such a great guy I can see the love and respect you have for the wildlife and I love that and respect that about you.
Your so right about how they are on a decline and they really need our support. Their rituals when they come up on the bones of their family is personal and so emotional and we can only Imagine their thoughts? Thank you again for all you do to bring the heart of Kruger to us around the world. It's greatly appreciated with respect.

I been to Kenya a couple of times and had the pleasure of witnessing a huge Tuska in the same league as this beauty and my god, he was huge! Walked passed the jeep and no one said anything for ages. He had us transfixed. And it's moments like these that I wish I could protect his life & other magnificent creatures from the horrors we sometimes unfortunately witness. Politics aside.... He sure is magnificent! I wish him nothing but a full & healthy life, hope he sires so many more for the future!

Couldn’t agree more, creating awareness for the future generations is so vital at the moment. The next century is make or break for the animals that suffer through poaching. Only in videos have I seen them but even then it's such a beautiful sight, and the ones that have tusk that go all the way to the ground, oh my what a sight.

Well said! To be recognised as a tusker the tusk has to measure something like 1.4 or 1.5m outside of the lip. He is an official tusker so would say your guess of 5-6 feet is spot on👌🏻
