In retail news, economists say consumer spending is easing off, owing to slower job and wage gains, elevated borrowing rates and tight lending standards.
The problem isn't just how much people earn but how much they have to spend to live. That amount the woman quoted for a single adult to live in Hawaii doesn't seem to have accounted for the rising cost of rent. I don't know how people will afford rent if it keeps going up along with all the other things going up in price.
Mandating a higher minimum wage has consequences. Look at California. Many small businesses are closing because they can not afford the higher minimum wage. Workers hours are being cut. Many jobs are being replaced by kiosks or technology. Some workers will go from minimum wage to zero (unemployed). The state's tax revenue will decrease. Prices of products must be raised to pay for the increased minimum wage. Hurting small businesses will also set off a chain reaction hurting supporting businesses. California is our future. Short term, it would have better to provide aid through changing Hawaii tax system with credits to low income people, increasing SNAP benefits or creating some new state government programs. Long term, the state needs to address the problems that make Hawaii an expensive place to live. Raising the minimum wage is only a band aid solution.
@@Critique808Ok so you are paying the equivalent of 7 1/2 employees getting paid $20 an hour. Now think about the average restaurant employing 100 people being paid $20 an hour pulling an 8 hour shift? $16k x 3 shifts $48k in 24 hours. Now add a buck for every shift worker? That's an extra $100 per hour. $16,800 per shift x3 $50,400 in 24 hours. Your $1,200 for 8 hours of plumbing work ain't nothing! They are crying for a damned good reason.
Demanding increase in wages does one thing and that is to kick the small businesses to the curb and I know the bigger business will come in to buy out those local businesses. That is how increasing the minimum wage works
Increasing minimum wages does nothing but accelerate inflation. I spent $18 bucks for a combo meal at Chick-Fill-A. It’s one of those rare fast food places where the price is worth it but imagine McDonalds with that kind of prices? You know what land lord gonna do when they know people get a bit more money? Raise the rent. For skilled workers they dont get raises that often. Inflation caused by increase to minimum wage is effectively making skilled workers lose money as they don’t get the benefit of instant 14% increase in pay. In short. Low skilled workers still not going to afford to live and in time skilled workers gonna have to deal with paying 14% more for everything. Note Minimum wage is the minimum a business can pay. So businesses can pay more than 14 dollars per hour if they want. Forcing it is a the stupidest thing ever. It only kill competition to big national chains.
Californian here, the moment they implemented $20 / hr min wage, I can no longer eat outside the house / fast food restaurants as businesses just pass along the wage increases to customers. Soon there will be massive layoffs at these places bc the people struggling to survive cannot afford anything!
Remember one thing... Money doesn't disappear. It simply moves. This means that if someone isn't making money, then that money *must* be going somewhere. Now we know the wealth gap keeps worsening so it is not hard to figure out where all that money is going. Tax breaks for the wealthy, unequal taxation, and corporate welfare are rarely discussed or understood. When you increase the minimum wage you benefit *your* community. Why? Because your neighbors will purchase your goods. You may not see the impact immediately, but with time you will because those who benefit from minimum wage increases rarely travel. If you are a small business, you are keeping money at home in local hands with minimum wage increases. If you are a large corporation, you are putting more money into the local economy.

The cost of living goes up and the wages needs to go up as well to survive and pass on the inflation on to the consumers.

Yeah. Government officials blind as always, no hurt them because they can easily increase their own wages.
If you can't afford to pay your employees $19/hr. Then your business is already a failure from the get go.

If you’re a single adult, and your income ceiling is minimum wage, you shouldn’t live somewhere like Hawaii, or anywhere with a high cost of living.
Cost of goods is a much bigger issue. Yes, the minimum wage does play... but, cost of goods up 20% over last 2 years is the death of these businesses.
