    Hey GP…..there’s another option. Some pallet fork frames have a receiver in the center on the inside bottom, if you remove the forks and leave the frame you can use your loader.

    Another option when using the three point hitch is have a chain to the drawbar to limit height. You set the height you want, then chain it. It will keep the three point from bouncing up when the trailer is rear end heavy.

      I've got a couple of tractors, with the largest being an old Ford 70ish hp. Though I pretty much use them every day, mine are nothing like the big modern tractors available. One day, I was over at a buddy's and jumped inside one of his monsters just to hide from a sudden storm... that thing was wall-to-wall electronics... I couldn't even find the start button amongst all the buttons and dials. Anyhow, the cab was cavernous and the operator's chair comfy, so I just sat there and slept until the storm passed. Then, just this morning, I was watching a big ag tractor go by towing three implements in tandem and a big dually pickup behind the lot... it was well over 100' long. These big rigs are common in my area and hardly a day goes by during the work season that something truly impressive doesn't go by. Some guys start their 9 year old kids out on old beaters from the 50s... by the time those kids are in their late teens, they might be piloting combined machinery worth well over a million dollars. There's still a place for tinkering around with a vintage Farmall, or old Ford 8-N, but there's stuff going down the road that requires some serious responsibility and commitment.

    My understanding from my days learning to use a tractor, is that If a heavy trailer on the three-point was to bounce up due to no down-pressure, if the tractor is turned left or right, or on uneven ground, the trailer may apply force that could tend to roll the tractor over. When I towed a big flatbed trailer as a float in a parade I chained the 3-point down to the drawbar to try to reduce the variables.

    Gord, I agree with your "subtitle" suggesting that the rear 3-point trailer hitch be set up as a Quick Hitch, avoiding the work to put the pins through the upper and lower arms. I carry my unit over to the rear of the tractor, drop it in place on the top hook and close the locking lower QH retainers. Takes longer to say it. The bonus of having a hydraulic top link is the additional adjustments available if needed, and from inside the cab. The OEM drawbar is too low to be useful and useless if, like me, you need to be switching between trailer ball sizes for different trailers.

  • @dhenschel4
    @dhenschel4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gord, thanks for going over all your options. The rear 3-point is lifted with a one-way cylinder. It's a safety feature so you don't lose traction on the rear wheels - instead if the implement raises it doesn't raise the tractor. I can't find a good diagram of the Kubota 3-point lift system, but there is a horizontal piston in the assembly, and the movement of the piston is converted to rotational movement of the lift arms. In my honda 3-poing, the piston rod is round inside the piston of course, but the outlet side of the piston has gear notches cut in it. Those gear notches mate up with gear notches in a round gear attached to the shaft holding the lift arms. That is how piston movement is converted to rotational movement. It would overkill and much more expensive to design a rotational hydraulic system for the lift arms, as you see in a snowblower for instance.

    Hello GP,
    Great video. I usually have the backhoe on our B2601, and hate to change over to the 3 point just to move an empty utility or boat trailer around the yard. I have wanted to have a hitch up front for light work that would be easy and quick to take on and off. None of the loader mounted hitches have appealed to me for the reasons you mentioned. When I was watching this video, I thought that top of the bucket mount would work great with a ball mount that has a drop down to the ball. I see them at Princess Auto and Canadian Tire. Some have a drop of about 8 inches to the ball. If I put a hitch on my pallet fork frame instead of the bucket, I could look through the frame and see the ball. I always get good ideas when I watch your videos.
    Thanks,
    Ben from Nova Scotia

      Hi Ben, take a look at the various attachments from Worksaver. I have one that attaches to my front-end loader that allows me to use my Carry-all on the front of my tractor. Since it mimics the connections of a three-point you can add a hitch assembly to the front of the tractor in-lieu of the carry-all. Because its a quick attach it can be changed out in minutes. I use this attachment when I have something on the back that I don't want to remove (cement block ballast for example). Hope this info helps. Cheers.

    Your exactly right GP on the rear three point hydraulics. I had a supervisor at work who busted his rear lift arms from the axle housing. This happened about 6 years ago. He said he only had 3 payments left on his L 3800 kubota and thankfully he bought an extended warranty, which with a lot of hesitation didn't want to warrant an accident like this. But, he was good friends with the owner and the salesman, and they went ahead and fixed it under warranty. I'm thinking it was about a 5,000 dollar fix. As he also had a 6' brushhog on his tractor and busted the housing around the PTO. Ouchie, that would've been hard on the pocket book.

    Made me think of another option using bucket top 2" JU Fabworks receiver rig. Add a 4 inch or a 6 inch drop type hitch ball mount to your options. Then you could get under the trailer hitch before tongue jack maxes out. That is what I plan to do.

    w00t!
    The adjustment knob for the 3-point is a rate of drop valve to adjust for different attachment's weights. If it is adjusted for a 100 lb attachment to smoothly drop, and then you put a 700 lb ballast box on the 3-point and don't screw that knob in and adjust it to the ballast box weight, it will drop like a rock. If it is set for a ballast box, and you put a real light attachment on, it will drop painfully slow (or maybe not at all).

    Very comprehensive and informative video GP, covering functions of the locks and accessories. My loader lock is a lot different on the B3030 but I never did know about how the 3 pt lock works. I have home made variations of the hitches you showed and yes, I have stabilizing arms for the three point drawbar adapted from a larger tractor. I find in the tight spaces in the woods with a trailer, the turning angle is greatly reduced with the short Kubota drawbar. With the adapter I made for the 3 pt drawbar, I can turn the tractor 90* to the trailer tongue increasing maneuverability. At least that is my highly non-technical and untrained opinion....LOL Yes, I caught that honorable mention right there with good ol' Dave @ RCAFPolarExpress !!

    Excellent and very informative. I don't understand how towing on the 3pt would cause anymore cylinder damage than anyone of several implements that attach to the 3pt would cause. There would be a lot more bouncing/movement from a 3pt implement.

    • @jaxturner7288
      @jaxturner7288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s not the bouncing around, it’s forcing the lift arms up past their limits.
      Implements bounce around a few inches in the middle of the three points travel and never violently top out the lift arms during operation, trailer tongues however will lift upwards two feet plus going over a small bump if it’s not controlled, as is the case with a three point on a tractor that has no down pressure, therefore no control of the upward forces, that is until the lift arms travel tops out and they slam against their stops and snap off.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi JO! I should have perhaps explained it in the video ,as i saw it happen on another tractor last year. The implement is hanging on the 3 point directly or in tight to it, but the weight on a trailer is well behind the 3 point ( trailer axle is approx 10 feet for example). The force of the weight far out from the 3 point, has, like a teeter totter effect, so to speak, sort of throwing the 3 point hitch upwards with a big force or energy. Remember how we would get thrown up with a hard sudden stop ( often throwing us up out of the seat), when someone heavier sat on the other end of the teeter totter when we were kids? Kind of like that. If you have the opportunity to ask your dealer mechanic, or have a friend that is a mechanical engineer, they can explain it much better. The force of a heavy trailer forcing the 3 point upwards is significant. Hope that sort of helps. :) I put a link in there to Tractorman44's video- I think he explains it really well. Cheers and enjoy your long weekend!

    Another plus to the 3pt option - Heavy Hitch makes a trash can hauler that fits the 2" receiver. Back up to the can - hook & lift - drive to road - lower in place - w/out leaving the seat. MUCH easier than lifting full cans in & out of my truck bed - or trying to push/pull full cans up a long, uphill, gravel driveway with those crappy plastic wheels that fall off all the time.
    There is an option that picks up two cans at once instead of one, but I don't recommend it, though. It reduces seat time. Far better, imo, to carry one can at a time and double the trips up & down the driveway and nearly double your seat time for garbage/recycle duty. (no, I won't attempt to defend that logically)

      @@GPOutdoors I do have a hydraulic top-link installed on my three point and it does provide some resistance against any upward movement. But whether it would be enough to stop a heavy trailer from forcing it up I'm not sure. I certainly can't easily move it upward like you did to yours in the video. Cheers.
