Navigating the Whanganui River

- The Whanganui River is a major river in the North Island of New Zealand. It is the country's third-longest river, and has special status owing to its importance to the region's Māori people.
It was used as a major highway through the central North Island from the 1890,s until the North Island Main Trunk Railway was completed in 1908, although its was not until the 1950's that the riverboats ceased operating up and down the river.
This short film identifies the many aspects of the riverboats as they provided transport of people and freight to the remote communities along the banks of the river.
The correct spelling is Wanganui. I was born in Pipiriki & have lived in Idaho for 40yrs.
