This scene gets me emotional . You can tell Sonny has a deep respect for Lorenzo for standing up to him and not crossing the line, he has to maintain his reputation and not go soft on him. Which is why Lorenzo was told to be left alone. Then, Lorenzo gets mad at C, slaps him, talks to him and kisses him on the head. Shows how a father should handle a son when he's in trouble and not just beat and yell at him. Definitely hits home.
Lorenzo says that he knows who Sonny is and what he's capable, but THIS time he's wrong. It's not as if Sonny isn't wrong in other cases, but that even in Sonny's line of work getting in-between a man and his family is wrong by any code even a mobster's code. And he's right. In Casino when Nicky gets involved with Sam Rothstein's wife he had to keep it a secret because the bosses back home didn't like it when ppl did that. I believe this is the same instance where Lorenzo is letting Sonny know that if he goes down for this Sonny will go down with him since anyone in the neighborhood would say that Lorenzo is a standup guy.
Sonny was envious of C's father because he loved C and wished he was his dad himself. But as he envied him, he did respect him too. Sonny was trapped in a lifestyle that had no room for true love or friendship but he found it with C. Sonny knew that none of the other gangsters really cared about him.
It's powerful how even the mafia guys respect De Niro's character. When Sonny says, "I respect you. You're a stand up guy", even Sonny's buddy sitting next to him nods in agreement.
The gangs came to be, because the Irish and Italians were treated like subhuman when they got here. They had to fight over the scraps. It was either be dirt poor and grind your nuts and back to shreds, go to the military, or do some illegal shit. They came here to a rigged game and figured, hey fuck it, let's cheat.
Lorenzo was the true hero of this film. Sonny was flawed and that's easy to sympathize with. Lorenzo though was so true to his roots. The real Italians that worked so hard to contribute to the country.
Lorenzo is great but Sonny has a heart too. He could have easily had Lorenzo wacked. But it's almost like he secretly admired him and wished he had a father like that growing up. Maybe his life would have turned out different.
Sonny is also smart enough to know thats not gonna help him. Like he says "the trick is not to be hated." If he had Lorenzo whacked over this, where he knows he's in the wrong, then not only does the neighbourhood think less of him, since everyone respected Lorenzo, but C probably hates him for life. Kid would be smart enough to know what happened.
I feel like it wasn't really a necessary addition to the dialogue. Why would you offer to whack someone because they stood up for their son. Lorenzo did nothing wrong, and people only get whacked when they pose a threat, or for 'justice'. "Want me to take care of him?" was probably the only line in the film that didn't sit right with me.

It’s rare for me to cry as a man but every single time I see this scene where Lorenzo lectures his son on what a real tough guy is it makes me tear up every single time. The hard working man is the real tough guy. Just like my father.
Even the light smack in the face was for the boy's own good. His dad was angry and afraid that his son would see Sonny and think that life was glamorous when in reality it's stealing FROM working men like his dad.
@@zedmak sonny didn't care about Lorenzo telling him that he had to stay away from his son. Sonny even almost punched Lorenzo and continued to hang out with Calogero and take him to the bar. I don't see any respect from sonny to Lorenzo
@@ex4life96 sonny didn't respect Lorenzo. If he respected him then he would have respected Lorenzo's decision of staying away from his son. Sonny continued to take the kid with him. I think the only reason Sonny didn't kill Lorenzo was just because he was the father of "C" and didn't want "C" to have his father murdered and cry and suffer because of it. But Sonny did it for "C" not for Lorenzo
One of the most moving secens of all time. It's one of those scenes where you forget you're watching a movie. To see a man stand up for his son and family, no matter who it is, is what makes him a MAN. Masterpiece.
On the other hand, a far more diplomatic approach would have been better. Going for the angle of sitting down, talking with him, and then appealing to the Italian attitude of respect. Rather than just wild threats of you stay away from him. I don’t blame him for getting emotional about his son’s future, but it definitely could’ve been handled better. Appealing to Sonny’s culture and humanity rather than the ordinate of “STAY AWAY FROM MY SON”
The best scene of the movie. Only if the Kid saw how much his father love him to stand up for him. He would do anything to keep his son safe. I love this part!
I watch this sence with my father and my 12 year old son and this sence brought my father to tears because it remained him of a time when I was around c’s age in this sene and a local gang member took me under his wing and my father hated that I guess when we watched this he had a flashback to that night
Prime example why you need fathers in every household. The mother out of fear of confronting Sonny or being open for the extra income was willing to tolerate her kid go down a bad path. The father was the firm hand and enforcer who did what was necessary, though scary and unpleasant, to steer his son in the right path. Mothers are nurturers and emotional pillows which kids need, but fathers are what keep kids steered in the right direction.
The tough guy rant is one of the best things you will ever hear in a movie. It's what we try and preach to our kids everyday to do the right thing. And the right thing 99% of the time is the hardest thing. But that's what makes you a decent human being. Always taken the easy option you will waste all your potential and never amount to being a nice caring person.
Not only that, once you're in, you can never get out. And will likely have to look over your shoulder for the rest of your life. Not worth it in my opinion

I have a cousin that went to film school and they showed her this film countless times and at first when she told me I didn’t understand why after rewinding it myself I truly now understand... pure Brilliance
Idk how C, even when he grew up, could still think his dad was a punk..the guy stood up to a dude that could put him to sleep with the fishes in an instant..Lorenzo was the true G..
This scene is so powerful on so many levels! Watching this when I was a kid and watching this as a father, now I truly understand both sides and it’s just a double edge sword. Our life in this world is base on decisions. Decisions to make or break your life. Decisions you and your family will have to live with for the rest of our lives. Please make the choices with your loved ones in mind. I’ve made bad decisions in my life and I have to live with it, but if I can change my son’s course in life when I know it’s not headed the right way, dam straight I will absolutely do my best to make him a better man, make better decisions, be better than his father and stay on course. That’s all we Truly want. Progress is Everything! We walk FORWARD for a reason! 💯
There's parts in that exchange between Sonny and Lorenzo where it looked like Jimmy Whispers was actually siding with Lorenzo. "This time your wrong. You don't fool with a man's family." Whispers was looking like 🤷🤷"He ain't wrong" 🤷🤷
Father knows best! If I was Lorenzo I would have explained myself more respectfully, diplomatically & carefully, all while thanking him for caring enough about C for encouraging him to go down the right path in life. Still firm, yet more polite & sensitive to the situation. And Sonny was sensitive enough to understand, appreciate & even admire Lorenzo & where he was coming from, even if Sonny didn't show that in front of his guys (trying to save face!). For I understand Lorenzo's fears & great displeasure, though if I were in his shoes I would have been much more tactful, cautious & measured, all while maintaining my composure & calm as I stated my case & made it clear that my son was not to be in that bar under any circumstances. That's just me. Great scene, great movie!
It really breaks my heart watching DeNiro working today in such crappy movies that I just fear we wont see him again in such brilliant performances like these. I hope one day he gets a real part in a movie, dont care if its low budget. He can deliver.
There many real world examples of a feared man needing help and no one comes out of the same fear. But people who are loved are swarmed with support. And even the tough working and and the toughest gangster need help in their lives. That line rings true every day on this planet. It's toppled empires and raised as many more
They way Sonny's goon looks at him when he says "you dont fool with man's family" you know Sonny and every dude in there were on Lorenzo's team in that moment, even if they didnt say it
I like how he equates ‘toughness’ with ‘consistency’ as in getting up in the morning to perform the same routine makes you ‘tough’. I mean yes, it can wear you down over the years, going to a job everyday but it’s not typical to equate it to the act of being tough.
You missed the point that, the scene was trying to make. The point of the scene was to explain that one can choose to simply kill for the mob and make money easily. The other guy being who provides for his family even when times are tough and gets up with the mental toughness to keep pushing forward to provide a better life for their family and children THAT is the tough guy. Not the bastards who choose to take the easy way in life.

I have to admit....I never considered throwing my baseball cards away because Mickey Mantle could never pay my rent.....lol
Technically if you had a mickey mantle card today he could pay your rent...but just for a month.
Same

Mickey Mantle card just sold for $12 million dollars last week!
The end of this scene gets me in the ❤ every single time.
It’s rare for me to cry as a man but every single time I see this scene where Lorenzo lectures his son on what a real tough guy is it makes me tear up every single time. The hard working man is the real tough guy. Just like my father.
The best scene you can watch as a son and later in life as a parent….😭
what a great dad. taught him great things
yup, integrity is at the top of the list. Hard to find anymore.
Even the light smack in the face was for the boy's own good. His dad was angry and afraid that his son would see Sonny and think that life was glamorous when in reality it's stealing FROM working men like his dad.
Things?? What things?
What a great effn scene!! Raise your hand if you’re watching this in 2021! 🤚🏾
Yup!!!! ✋ Right here!
🤟
where's the hand emoji ?!
I’ve always wondered if Sonny let Lorenzo live out of respect for C or because he respected him for standing up.
Both. And he knew he was right, that was his son, family is everything.
@@zedmak sonny didn't care about Lorenzo telling him that he had to stay away from his son. Sonny even almost punched Lorenzo and continued to hang out with Calogero and take him to the bar. I don't see any respect from sonny to Lorenzo
Definitely both.
DeNiro came in hot headed but I wouldn't consider him out of line, he showed Sonny respect. The guy is a civilian.
It's not a killing offense 🤷🏻♂️
I like how Sonny still respects Lorenzo after their confrontation.
3:43 one of the greatest Scene Ever!
One of the best father and son scene's I've ever witnessed in a movie ...
the funny thing is…I was in his situation but with a pops
Scene always reminds me of my Pops. He was a honest working man. Love ya Pops🙏
I honestly wholeheartedly believe this is the best Deniro scene ever shot, and that is saying one hell of alot.
brought me to tears some of us never had fathers
It's literally the perfect movie. Not a single thing wrong it
Prime example why you need fathers in every household.
Mais que um filme um exemplo de vida . Aprendi muito com esse filme
LOVE this whole sequence of the movie. De Niro is amazing.
You can never be prepared for how heavy this scene is.
Sonny’s an Amazing actor & he killed it in this movie wow what a performance💯😎👍🏼
I worked on this movie. All the big names in the movie I know as personal friends. In fact it was me who talked Rob D into doing the movie, after he first refused it. I also tweeked the script. Really proud of the final result. I think the cast did us proud
Genuinely one of those scenes that bring tears to my eyes every. fucking. time.
LOL Mum found it. They always DO. LOL
My mother trashed my room a dozen times. Never found a thing. But I got to clean it up every time before she threw me out at age 14. Crazy wench...
@@limeflavor5085 My brother was TRAPPED in a scenario where my Mum with her uncanny 6th sense knew he was hiding something in the bathroom. Porn mag. Dead end.
She wasn't budging from outside the door till he opened it...
This scene really had a hold on me and can kinda relate
My dad once found confettis of weed in my drawers and slapped for it. He's the real man for the love of his son
bruh weed aint that bad lmao you can smoke weed and have a functional life, its just some people let that lazyness get to them
Those were the longest 5 minutes ever
Lorenzo went in during the day and came out in the night
De Niro was always the toughest guy in a movie . Sonny knew he was in the wrong
Except when he got banged out by Arthur Fleck 😅
@@jeremybeadleslefthand480 banged? Sounds like an alternate ending
@@benjarvis7485 Sorry...shot brutally on screen by a psychopath 😁
It may not seem like so but that father is the the real tough guy here. Alone against everybody, fending for his family, despite he's very wife not understanding his position. Powerfull.
This is the best Robert De Niro scene that I've ever seen in my life thank you Robert for being a great actor thank you whether it's real or fake it's still real to me.
Sonny respected Lorenzo & loved C. So killing Lorenzo would hav destroyed Sonny's love for C. C would've hated Sonny which would've broken Sonny's heart...Sonny was growing with C in his life & he knew it...Gr8 fukin film!
Amazing scene. One of my favorites
Deniro had me on the movie 🚕 taxi but this is gold I love this scene 🥺 💯
I have a cousin that went to film school and they showed her this film countless times and at first when she told me I didn’t understand why after rewinding it myself I truly now understand... pure Brilliance
This great film is so under rated it is a crime
Idk how C, even when he grew up, could still think his dad was a punk..the guy stood up to a dude that could put him to sleep with the fishes in an instant..Lorenzo was the true G..
"want me to take care of him?" 😂😂 Just like that
This scene is so powerful and underrated
touch u
A very beautiful scene............ great acting too............and Lorenzo is 100 % right.
How every father should be.
There's parts in that exchange between Sonny and Lorenzo where it looked like Jimmy Whispers was actually siding with Lorenzo. "This time your wrong. You don't fool with a man's family." Whispers was looking like 🤷🤷"He ain't wrong" 🤷🤷
The wife should've kepr her mouth shut. She should've known her husband would've returned the money.
😄😄😄
I would have kept it, but not allowed any more into the house.
@@gullybop1695 you're a Dreamer, you can't do both.
@ I can do both. Maybe you couldn't do both but I could and would have.
@Ghost Rage me too.
one of the best movies
In today’s age we need more fathers like Lorenzo
Definition of a true father
The dad was in the right 100%
Great show, this one and good fellas!
I'm a working man and I love this
The funniest thing about this scene is that if he kept his Mickey Mantle baseball card it would absolutely pay his rent now
It really breaks my heart watching DeNiro working today in such crappy movies that I just fear we wont see him again in such brilliant performances like these. I hope one day he gets a real part in a movie, dont care if its low budget. He can deliver.
His liberal thinking affected his acting. He's done.
He's a woke moron
There many real world examples of a feared man needing help and no one comes out of the same fear. But people who are loved are swarmed with support. And even the tough working and and the toughest gangster need help in their lives. That line rings true every day on this planet. It's toppled empires and raised as many more
They way Sonny's goon looks at him when he says "you dont fool with man's family" you know Sonny and every dude in there were on Lorenzo's team in that moment, even if they didnt say it
I get older I realize the working man really is the tough guy.
Kids NEED FATHERS!!!🙏.. powerful scenes👍👍
I have watched this movie about three times. Very good.
The kid is a fantastic actor, got the teenage C's mannerisms downpat.
Sonny left Lorenzo alone for one reason only: Nothing Trumps FAMILY!
Haha
Trump's family has nothing to do with this.
That is a great dad talking
October 2021 still watching this master piece off example about life your father is a tough guy !
What’s great about this movie is that Lorenzo pays respect to Sonny at the funeral because of his love for his son.
One of the most beautiful movies.
No matter what they tell you, remember, it's a man's duty to protect and guide his family. He cannot afford to be afraid.
Robert de Niro was obviously paying close attention/observing Martin Scorsese when he was directing because this is a beautiful and well directed film.........
