I dont believe this "John" guy. What i believe is that Hickok found the fountain of youth.
+Fantasy Flan Saw him in person in Sevierville. He must be the original "Big John" The boy is HUGE and dad is not tiny either!
Good to see you on the main channel. Great rifles, I'm a long time fan of the AR15 and I absolutely love my SP1. I need to get another Carbine... I foolishly sold mine years ago. :( Great find.
i love how the gun community in America knows eachother so well haha. you, hickock, iraq vet 8888, etc it just shows another side to "Gun culture" rather than what we are shown in the media. end of the day guns dont kill people, people kill people. God bless
+Military Arms Channel I agree. love both you guys *Hugs*
+clive ramsbotty so I can defend myself not the gun
+clive ramsbotty It is the person you idiot. People kill people. A gun is just a tool. A tool has no thoughts or feelings. It only does what the PERSON makes it do.
+clive ramsbotty So I can have an effective tool to kill someone who is trying to kill me or my family.

Indeed... Indeed.
+The Proud Sun Bro. I wonder why his son didn't continue the joy of painting. He is really talented and mesmorizing to watch, too.
Thanks for the great review John.
Did you shrink the AR in the wash?
+Voodoo2762 haha
+Voodoo2762 Lolled at that
+Voodoo2762 I thought the same thing.. Is it because he's huge like his dad?
+Voodoo2762
Funny how there is 223 likes for this comment in an ar video :P
Crockett85 Maybe it will hit 556 :P
Been waiting a long time to have John in front of the camera! Nice job guys!
+John Abela (HikeLighter) Has is own channel. I recommend it.
+Navy_blu77 -- I know. Just been wanting to see him on THIS channel.
+John Abela (HikeLighter) He's got his own channel now.
***** Gotcha
Weird..
I have owned my SP1 for 30+ years. It eats both 5.56 and .223 with no problem. Mine is the full length version with triangular hand guards. I shoot left handed, and only once did I get a hot casing down the back of my shirt. I have never needed a forward assist. I've had one failure to feed, and it was caused by the magazine. Since I've had it since I was 17, when I went into the Army, I knew the M-16 in and out. All in all, my SP1 is my favorite rifle. Thanks for the great video.
Good job John. This takes me back to 1968. I was the high firer in the company when I qualified with an M-16. The drill sgt. said "them Tennessee boys know how to shoot". I really enjoy you and your dads presentations. Keep up the good work.
That is a nice find John. You were smart to pick one up. I have the same model, which I purchased circa 1983. Bought as a collectors piece. I bought a lot of firearms circa 1982-1986 for collector purposes. The firearms I really liked, I bought 2. One to keep in pristine condition and the second one to use. I did this with HK-93, FAMAS, HK-MP5, SP1 Colt and a few others. To this day, the HK93 and FAMAS work great. A lot might now be aware that the FAMAS, is a Delayed Blow Back firearm. It uses a Cam and Lever system for the Delayed Blow back. Opposed the roller delayed blowback that's in the HK93, and other HK, models. On the stock section of the FAMAS, there's a little hump. That is actually a part the aides in ejection.
I really love these rifles. For me these look miles better than any modern version. You just can't beat classic looking AR's and AK's.
If you're Hickok45's son does that make you Hickok38?
He is about 6,8" so more like hicock 50
+Taylor Payne Haha!
+Sam Coren Naw, Hickok919
+Mordant Victor haha
+Mordant Victor Hickok454?
"Man behind the camera". So under rated. The way you film the videos is amazing! Good to see you in front of the camera!
Chewbacca vs Colt SP1 :)
+Himerosteam :)
I love the sound of you guys walking around. All of the empty shells and brass under your feet sounds awesome.
Damn that rifle looks tiny in your hands!
AR carbines are small guns
+animalmother556x45 Not really... but John is like 6'8"...
+DBZ Shaggy everything looks like a toy in his hands.
+jrmym2 "Not really" what? You don't think AR carbines are small guns?
animalmother556x45 No; not particularly.
"My Dad's Son Hickok45" thats a new one it almost confused me lmaooo
Excellent video! Its awesome how AR's have come full circle, it started here with the SP1 then went to tacticool and crazy, now its coming back to the old standard. SP1's are awesome!
Keep on educating people. Keep on reviewing firearms. Hickok45 and John, you are doing great work and it looks like you are loving it!. Keep on showing the world odd and unusual arms, and keep on showing the world how normal people shoot and enjoy the sport. Your range is the envy of many. Its the last bastion of FREEDOM in the recreational shooting sport.
The Car-15 always reminded me of Sgt Elias and Sgt Barnes from Platoon who carried these rifles whilst storming through the jungles of Vietnam.
I held my first AR back in '82. I had just turned 12 and they had a full size SP1 at a local store and my dad and I were checking it out. Totally true about ARs being much less common back then. I swear when my dad handed that thing off to me, I was bathed in a warm, glorious light, and I heard a chorus of angels sing. 😂 Good times. 👍
Great vid. Thanks John. You are right-on about ARs being exoctic in the 1980s. I first shot one in 89 and I remember that spring "twang" through my muffs.
John, I'm 52 years old. And like your dad, I've been into guns all of my life. Back in the 80's, it was rare to see this type of gun in a someones personal collection. Seems like everyone has one though now. I've shot dozens of em over the years and always wanted one. Now that I finally have an AR, I wish I had purchased one sooner.
I really do like that older style Colt. Thanks for showing it off. Happy New Years and God Bless !!!
That was really cool! Great review of a really nice old gun. I was 20 yrs. old when that rifle was made, makes me want to get out and hunt one down just like it. Keep up the great work, you guys rock!
I bought my SP1 Carbine in 1981when I was at my first duty station in Texas. I still have it and will pass it down to my son one day. I think I paid $340.00 for it, a lot of money for a young Airman First Class back then!!
What a jewel of a rifle.
You make a good point, i remember going to the shooting range with my Dad back in the late 80's and seeing an AR15 and it was a big deal. No one had them back then, and if you saw one in the wild you talk about for a while.
Interesting to see the carbine model. I have a 1977 production full length SP1 that I've owned since 1990. They definitely have a different sound/feel when shooting than my newer AR's. Thanks for sharing.
John looks like a sons of anarchy character.
Sorta Tig... ish, now hat you mention it
+J Bullast That*
+jeremy beverly He is in it's spin-off series, Johns of Anarchy, go check it out.
sorry i had to..
+jeremy beverly He looks a bit like Opie actually... sized like ope too.. :D
+Italian Supreme awe. Opie :(
Good job John. You know your stuff, and you have the same enthusiasm your dad has. That will keep our interest as well.
I can tell you one thing about that forward assist. It definitely came in handy more than one time during firefights in Afghanistan. I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Love the people who watch these videos. Most youtubers receive a ton of hate from their "fans" when they put a new face in front of the camera but not this community.
John,Thank you for doing this video. Of all my AR rifles my SP1 is my go-to SHTF rifle, it has never failed me, it weighs less then all my other rifles. I use it for all my 3 Gun Matches and all my Carbine Matches. I have other railed out AR wonders but my trusty SP1 is my favorite. The only thing I would have mentioned is, with a 1/12 twist you need to use 55gr bullets, with such a slow twist rate it can't stabilize the current 62gr bullets.
Terrific video, John, and great to see you "moonlighting" on the Hickock45 channel! I think you've inspired me to want to pick up one of these. Thanks!
Great video John! Thanks for all the entertainment and information that you and your Dad have both provided throughout the years. You guys are the top of the heap in the TH-cam gun channel world!
I'm glad I grabbed the stock Colt SP1 w/ bayonet lug back in the '80s outta boot. It zeroed quick and has hit group ever since.
The easiest way to describe the Colt SP-1 is an M4 carbine with a pencil barrel. (Besides kacking forward assist & having the A1 carry handle & bayonet lug)
The Colt "commando" you mention is actually it's own rifle, it's not the SP-1 model.
The Colt Commando is a select fire SBR, we use them on duty with the agency I work for.
I believe the correct model number from Colt is 6933.
Good find with that SP-1, they have been hard to find for years. That's a keeper for sure, hang onto that gun!
Some things I noticed about John shooting instead of Hickok45 is there is a lot less pot smoking and less excuses for missing the target. You guys both do great videos that keep me entertained while it's slow at work. Keep them coming!
These are moments that make a father proud, great video Big John
Everyone loves the old SP1s!
Great video John! You were a lot more relaxed in this video. Very informative and professional. Thanks for all you and your dad do for shooting enthusiasts like me.
I sometimes carried a similar carbine when I worked entry control points in the Air Force. We called it a "GAU". Slickside upper receiver, same lower as this one, but a shorter barrel. Most of them had the ancient three-prong flash hider, usually with a prong broken off.
Very nice! The old school AR in my collection is a Sendra M-15A1 from late 70's, early 80's. Triangle handguards, pencil barrel, A1 receivers. It's lots of fun.
That's an iconic carbine from the movie "Platoon". Staff Sgt. Barnes(Tom Berenger) and Sgt. Elias(Willem Dafoe) carried full auto versions of this carbine in the movie. Barnes dropped a VC scout from like 200m with a CAR-15, fast 3 shots, at the riverbank near the village they then stormed with grim consequences. One of my favourite movies all time.
Except they had the forward assist.
Hey John, I bought my SP-1 C.A.R. 15 in 1976. In those days it was rare to find one. Ruger Mini-14's were more popular and of course Bill Ruger did not make high capacity magazines only 5 round box magazines. The gun shop I bought mine at knew my sister and he told her I was a crazy nut for buying it! LOL
Lighter than todays AR's I did have mine converted to select-fire and cut and threaded the barrel to 11.5", Put the old style hard stock on it. I also put a chrome M-16 bolt carrier.
I could tell what needed to be done to convert it, but then I'd have to kill you! LOL It doesn't need forward assist, it works flawlessly.
Back in those days 20 round magazines were all you could find as surplus. My SP-1 actually came with a 20 round magazine but it had a spacer inside to limit it to 5 rounds. I still it have new. It's a keeper for sure! Great find.......
Big John! Great to see you on the main channel. Both you and your dad are great to watch, thanks again for some more great and entertaining content!
When I was a kid my dad coworker showed my this rifle. I've wanted one ever since! I now have multiple ARs but I still find myself wanting one of these
I love SP1's!! Their lower receivers are perfect for a "slabside" M-16A1 retro build! I'm using one for my Model 629/XM177E2 build. Now if only I could find a "partial fenced" A1 lower.
John is a good shot. I'm not surprised coming from the compound! He can snap them off on the plates out there pretty quick with iron sights.
Hickok jr. talks the exact same way as Hickok sr. Great to see John on the big screen.
Great vid, John. That little transverse hole on the bottom forward corner of the pistol grip was intended as an alternate mounting location for a sling swivel. Practically nobody ever used it as such, so in later versions, the raised boss remained but the through-hole was filled in. Most modern grips totally do away with it.
Johns camera work is so much better Hickok! Don't worry your shooting is superb. Great video guys!
Beautiful piece. I picked up a SP1 myself, with the 'nam hand guards that make the rifle so much more beautiful!
doing great in front of the camera big John, bonus to see an extensive review with you as well. thank you for both of your great work
Great job John! I think you guys should just do everything on this channel. I don't like having so many options. Consider it like the old Johnny Carson "Tonight Show". It's great to see Johnny, but just as good when Jay was guest hosting. Love the stuff your Dad does, but very impressed with your on screen presence. Without you, there isn't a Hickok45 Channel. Cudo's to both of you!
Johns gotten much better in front of the camera, great job man!
Nice to see John on the main page! Keep up the good work fellers
one of the coolest/badass american, familys ive ever heard of/ watched. great stuff.
From my understanding in Vietnam DevGru (Seals), Lrrps and others such as Green berets used them. Also they were reserved for helicopter scout pilots flying the OH-6 that were in the Big Red 1.
best ar-15 video ive seen in a while. cool to see the evolution of the rifle.
You better watch it John after Dad hurt his thumb. He might take a break and start shooting videos for a while..I remember buying one of these in the 80s ... First and only firearm I sold from my collection . I have regretted ever since. Great video.
NOT only are you a fantastic shot Hickok but you are a great Camera man! Kubrick ain't got nothing on you! Great Shooting John!
... Hitchkok for President and John for vice president 2016!
Great video John!
It's so true what he says about AR's nowadays. Sure I wouldn't mind owning one, but they're so common that I always tend to overlook them in gun shops.
You guys are great!!! Nice to see hickok son doing videos!!!! Keep it up!
i just love the look of a grab handle and a fixed front sight post. Classy! i dig a fixed stock myself, 'cause i like that twang.
I love hearing all the casings on the ground while you walk around
That's a nice one John! I was just reading up on some of the old school colts a few days ago.
Enjoyed video, I have the exact carbine and still have the hand written receipt from 1979, paid $ 365. The carbine has taken coyotes, South TX white tails, an even had a 300lb sow pig charge me, the CAR never let me down .
Wish I could afford an old Colt. Most that I've seen are $2K plus. I took the affordable route and built my own using a Nodak Spud lower and a parts kit. Now I have one that looks like the one I was issued back in '69, minus the full auto of course.
Nice to see you on the main channel John! great video and nice gun!
Nice job John. We all know what your dad thinks about most of these guns. It will be fun to hear what you think. The few times you have done these, I can tell it's not always going to be what dad thinks. Thats good, be yourself. You do a good job.We all know how good you are behind the camera, take a little time and help your dad. He is no John , but getting better at it.
Here's the thing with that forward assist. When you load a round especially from a 30 round magazine there's always a slim chance that the bolt will ride over the bullet and leave you with an empty chamber. If it has happened to you then you get a habit of verifying there's a round in the chamber by pulling the bolt back a bit to see the bullet loaded. And when you release the charge handle the bolt may or may not go into battery so you push it in with the forward assist. CYA complete.
The guys that often landed in a hot landing zone and had to spray the bushes while running to cover did not mind the switch to the M16 one bit.
Solid presentation
Hickok45 and John are the most interesting gun guys on TH-cam. Every other youtube gun channels seem to be more acted out.
There's nothing like savoring a long hickok45 video or GCR podcast.
Keep up the good work. :)
4:00 never heard a modern AR make that sound while racking a round in the chamber. Must just be the original awesomeness. LOL
Thanks John for the , show and tell. I can't wait to see what you have planned next.
Great review! Thanks John. I'll check out more of your stuff.
Hi Hickok and John. First of, you guys have an awesome channel with epic guns! I love this variant of the AR family. If I could own only one AR it would be one like this. I love the classic look with the fixed rear sight/carry handle. It's just such an iconic AR! Keep up the good work!
Hey John, Thanks for the video on that classic AR! Up here in Canada that seems to be a favorite style of AR due to gun bans and strict regulations. We all appreciate your work behind the scenes too.
Great review John, I think you covered all the bases very well. It's nice to see one of those old, classic ARs on the channel. One minor tip, make an out loud comment as you pick or change your targets, so we (and your dad) know where to focus when we watch.
Nice to see you on the channel John great job
Good job John! A chip off the old block! That is a cool rifle.
Wow, you look a lot younger!
Awesome video!! The only thing I missed is Hickok laughing as he is shooting!! Haha makes me laugh too!
I have the exact one. My dad bought it for me when I was around 13. Haven't shot it in over 20 years. I guess its about time too.
I got my A2 in 02 and at that time you were a gun nut if you had one. I had to order mine from bush master because none of the local gun shops had them. Then around 8 or 10 years latter i see one on the rack at Walmart. I was amazed AR's had gone from gun nut purchase to Walmart on the rack. I am glad that the narrow view toward gun ownership has opened up some over the years, i do miss those old ammo prices though.
Cool to see John in front of the camera, i fully support this merger.
You are definitely your father's son. Well presented. Nice, classic rifle.
Your old man does well behind the camera, too, but may need a little more warning on target selection lol.
Keep up the great work, guys! Always entertained!
Nice video. I have the SP1 20" and like it very much. It's the pure AR. Stoner was not an advocate of the forward assist so the SP-1 is more of the pure vision as it was intended to be. Probably the main cost cutting move affecting the SP1 is the omission of the chrome plated BCG, which Stoner specified go back into the design when he developed the KAC SR-25. Young MFG makes a nice one without the F/A notches.
Good to See you here John!!
John was sneaky about "smoking pot" there.....almost went unseen!
The first AR I ever fired was my father-in-law's 60s SP1 20".
I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the buffer "twang"; something I've never experienced with a modern AR.
And just a quick note: This may have been said already, but the hole in the front of the pistol grip is for a sling swivel.
Be proud that your son is getting all those views, he did a great job!
Good shooting Big John; the old Colt is still a quality firearm. The Hickok45 videos brings to TH-cam, all the good guns here in the USA, or at least in Tennessee.
about time John did a video!
He has his own channel.
Hey John, good to see ya. I have that same rifle, bought a year ago with several others. Didn’t know what I had until I took it to the range and the owner about lost his mind over it. Lightest and best handling AR out there but I have a few too many so it’ll be on Gunbroker in a couple of days. Good info on this rifle for sure.
Interesting history. Always loved the Commando style!
Good seeing you on the main channel Boss
Absolutely beautiful gun. I really like the look of the classic ar's with the fixed carry handle. You are lucky to own one.
great job john.nice to see you.thanks, rudy
Good vid John! Glad to see y'all havin some fun with the channel
