  • @gungadinn

    After viewing the under the car video portion, it's no wonder the car isn't making any power. Exhaust from the manifolds into a Y pipe, then into a single factory catalytic converter, then branching out to a set of dual pipes exiting out the rear. Any bets that a 40 year old converter isn't clogged?
    That poor Sting Ray has seen a number of owners cobbling together a mish-mash of personal touches. Sounds like the poor girl was a red head orphan step child. Non functional side pipes with Corvette stenciled down the length, the bronze see through roof and the multi-colored interior.
    Give it some love guys. She's going to need it.

      While you are absolutely correct (I hate reality tv), a healthy dose of skepticism is not misplaced here. On any machine 40+ years old that untold number of folks have worked on, often one thing is fixed only to uncover others ... refer to starter cob-job... Our phrase in the shop wasn't "let's see if it starts" it was "What gremlin did we just release"

      There was a text pop-up about exhaust cutouts and an exhaust system. If it was _my_ build (as much as I dislike the 1980's 'vette) I'd have the outlet for the cutout going through the sidepipes and "normal" mode going through the catalytic and tail pipes.

    • @PhilG999
      @PhilG999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michiganengineer8621 Here in Georgia an '80 is exempt from smog. That cat is the older bead type and restrictive as hell. Monza had one like it and when I put the headers on (V8 car) I put a ford-type cat off each header collector (back when it had to be tested). I'd also lose the side pipes. But it's HIS car and I always say if it's YOUR car do whatever you want!

Mine just looked like it had a pair of oversized mufflers LOL

    Tips. from a mechanic with 42 years under the hood.. anything with a carb and a mechanical fuel pump.. gets a 1984 corvette fuel filter before the pump inlet.. so the pump only gets filtered fuel.. if you need a filter with 5/16 hose barbs.. use the filter for a 94 ford probe.. both of those filters are 10 micron and it keeps the sediment out of the fuel pump check valves. this prevents fuel vapor lock ... extended cold cranking.. impossible hot cranking after stalling at low speed hot.. and fuel trickling out of the throttle shafts after shut down.. is the only fix.. i have been doing it since 1983..
    dead stick timing HEI distributors is Crazy simple. after the distributor is down on the oil pump shaft.. bring the crank to what ever base timing you want. look at the pickup coil poles and the reluctor poles.. turn the housing to align them.. lock the distributor down right there.. i did a 86 C4 TPI pickup coil.. i had preset the crank so the timing mark on the damper and pointer were at base timing . verified that the reluctor and pickup coil poles aligned.. pulled the distributor.. knocked the shaft out.. swapped in a new pickup coil.. dropped the distributor in.. bumped the engine around to seat the oil pump shaft.. bumped the starter till it got back to the exact same spot on the damper timing mark.. turned the housing.. locked it down.. finished reassembly.. reached thru the window and turned the engine roared to life.. the owner was sitting there watching me intently. how did you do that.. i have never seen anybody ever turn the key and start the engine without turning the distributor back and forth.. i looked at him and said this is why my boss paid me the big bucks.. i pulled out the timing light and jumped the AB terminal to allow me to check the timing.. dead on.. 15 before.
    one more thing. search out the carb specs.. see what size the Idle feed restrictions are.. usually out of the box carbs are 0.031" idle feed restrictions.. that is too small for most 383.. it will really wake up the car if you try it with 0.033" idle feed restrictions.. 0.032" works great on 347 thru 360.. get into the big blocks.. 427, 428, 429's need 0.035. i drilled them to 0.036" on a bored out 429SCJ and the owner could hardly drive it.. any tiny opening of the throttle and the rear tires would start spinning.. the idle feed restrictions are the only fuel from idle to around 1800RPM when the primary boosters start trickling.. the idle feed restrictions slack off totally as the primaries take over totally about 2400.. look at steady throttle air fuel ratio at 1700 or 1800 rpms.. if its lean and the primary boosters are not trickling yet.. go larger on the IFR's
    the Grey corvette at the beginning title could use some smaller accelerator pump shooter size and perhaps some IFR work.. should not be blowing black carbon smoke just winging the engine..
    be sure to set idle speed and idle mixture with the primary throttle blade closed as far as you can.. open the secondary throttle blade slightly. so the primary throttle blades don't uncover the more than a tiny amount of idle transitions slots..

    Thanks for the front and back story. Love the stories in the middle too - just to register my vote for your consideration. Cheers and thanks for the channel.

    I could be wrong here but I think videos need to be 10 minutes long to have ads in the middle, thats how you make your money lol

    I love the before and after type of videos but I think it would also be cool to see the more technical side of things like pulling the engine out, putting the new one in and even rebuilding some of the high output engines you guys are doing. Keep up the good work!
