Matriarch Tokwe on the Run After Wild Elephants & A Night Search Mission

- We have realised what is missing in our emergency kit and that's new radios and strong spotlights for moments like this! We are appealing to you to help us raise funds just for this need. You can sponsor radios and spotlights by donating to these items on our wishlist here:

🐘 RADIOS - herd.org.za/pr...
It's not often that Tokwe has us running around the reserve for her. That's the territory of Lundi and Mambo, in their wild elephant chases. There are many reasons our rescued elephants might go after the wild ones in the reserve, such as out of protection for our herd, and to chase the wild herd off, or to investigate something, or out of curiosity and an interest to socialise. The interactions between the two groups are very complex and we can't ever know exactly the causes for each one, whether it's with wild lone bulls or wild matriarchal herds with babies. In this case, Tokwe was alarmed by something, which you will have seen in a video last month, as she left the waterhole to chase after the wild elephants close by. What we have waited until today to show you is what happened next... On our herd's return to the homestead before sunset, we noticed that Tokwe was missing. Fishan stopped and looked back from time to time, knowing that the Matriarch was awol before us. We returned our herd to the homestead, and took to the bush in search of Tokwe. The sun was setting fast and it was getting especially dark, with no moon yet up in the sky to light our way. We didn't have the right equipment to search in the bush at night, with our radios now very old and our spotlights not bright enough to light far distances.
We borrowed lights from Jabulani lodge in the reserve and relied more on shouting out to one another in the bush as a way of communicating while we searched for Tokwe. We spotted a lone figure between the trees, heard the trumpeting and then saw Tokwe running at Adine's car. She did not stop, she kept running. Adine and the carers used the car's headlights to search for tracks, but could not find the missing Matriarch. We assumed she would return to the homestead to be with her herd, because as a Matriarch, that is her priority. We were right. We found her later at the homestead and when she reunited with her herd, it was Fishan who reacted the most intensely. He streamed from the temporal gland with excitement, urinated loudly and trumpeted.
Listen to the trumpets and sounds of reunion in this video as we managed to capture the night scenes.
HELP KEEP AN EYE ON THE HERD:
🐘 Donate towards a Hytera Radio for our elephant carers: herd.org.za/pr...
Our carers are out in the bush the whole day with the Jabulani herd and need these Two-way radios to communicate. There is no cellphone reception and therefore the radio’s are their only means of communication with each other and the HERD operations team, in the event of an emergency or injury. Guides on the reserve also communicate with our carer team through radio to keep them up to date on where they need to look out for dangerous wildlife. It is a vital piece of equipment that our carers need to keep them safe! Your donation will help us to purchase this item locally for our team.
🐘 Donate towards an Emergency Spotlight for our vehicles and carers to use at night around the Elephant Homestead and on the reserve. Your donation will help us to purchase this item locally. - herd.org.za/pr...
Adine, in follow-up to your appeal, I donated three spot lights and 1 radio. I wish I could have done more, particularly when it comes to the radios. I pray others will find it in their hearts to donate as well so the carers can keep the elephants safe as well as the other human herd members!
Oh wow, thank you so much for your kindness, Anna! ❤️ That makes such a big difference to us!

Oh, goodness. That’s why she’s the matriarch! Managing a threat and then hurrying back to the herd is what she did. Single-minded focus on joining her herd. She understands her responsibilities. What a great and mighty elephant she is.🐘

Perfetto ragionamento, bravissima matriarca Tokwe. 🥰
Spoken like a true human animal?
Here, here 👍.

What a brave matriarch! She was quite terrifying as she ran by Adine.
Her return shows how beloved she is to Fishan and her herd.
I will definitely donate!
Thank you so much! 😊 The elephants certainly love their matriarch ❤️
She scared me in a beautiful way- I just wonder the difference in protection (which they are amazing at) v chasing wild elephants- would the wild ones try to hurt this amazing herd?
Tokwe’s unabashed desire to protect “her” herd and the amazing love, attention, and kindness shown by the carers! I will donate as well!
Tokwe charging in the darkness is a formidable sight!! 😲 So, so glad our Magnificent Matriarch returned safely and so were the rest of the Herd 🤗❤🐘❤🙏
Dear Tokwe. Thank you for protecting your HERD. But please be careful. So glad you're ok 🙏❤️
Tigere or Adine should read our posts to Tokwe similar as the carers read to Fishan during his recuperation.

We truly would expect nothing less from this profound matriarch! This is why she holds this position! She is fearless and will stop at nothing to defend her herd! She knows where she is...and her way back home...but until the threat ceased to exist she was not about to stand down! I just hope that upon arriving home she was given some food and pellets...as it looked devoured to me once she did get there. She is beyond special...and my respect for her is limitless.
@Renee29forever Agreed...absolutely!🐘💗
Renee, you spoke the absolute perfect words!! 💖🐘
Condivido perfettamente il tuo pensiero cara Renee.😊
Yeah, but lets be honest.
She went out there searching for trouble when there was none. And had she found it, she could have gotten herself killed... over nothing.
Let's not forget that the strongest bulls didn't even flinch. That should count for something
I missed this 7 months ago. Made me feel emotional! It was scary to see the carers run after Tokwe and to see Khanyisa run to Adine. It made me think of the sadness and the blessings that brought this family together. Tokwe is a warrior! ❤
There was a wild elephant that the Matriarch wanted to talk to, up close and trunk to trunk lol! Glad everyone is back home, safe & happy 🐘🐘🐘👋🇨🇦
The Brave Matriarch Tokwe selflessly chased away any possible threats to her herd and it was so touching to see how worried sick and relieved Fishan was for his close friend
What an awesome matriarch. And how exciting to hear their sounds...
The language of elephants can run the gamut from thrilling to heartwarming.
Thank you, HERD... Blessings to everyone.
You always say the most beautiful things! Thank you for your comments!!! Blessings!!!

Thank you so much! 💕💕
Towke's brave and protective attitude is so admirable. Even though she caused quite a lot of concern amongst the people and the Herd elephants, it seems that her intentions were to protect her herd. Of course she managed to find her way home. She knows where she belongs.
Lundi also returned to the homestead on her own after she went off to chase away wild elephants.
Thanks
Oh thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Thank you all so much for the wonderful love and care you give each and every one of the beautiful elephants at the Elephant Orphanage, from Khanyisa upwards.!! They are all so very special.
You are the most amazing and caring group of carers and elephant experts.
She was keeping you in your toes with an emergency preparedness drill! 🚨🚨🚨
😂😂😂
What a scary adventure. Tokwe could here you all and i think her family was giving her calls we cant hear to communicate. She made a dash run passed you. They are a close tie family. Homestead is their home.
That is definitely possible! 🐘 Elephants do communicate at frequencies that humans cannot hear, and can communicate over long distances.
That little Khanyisa still steals my heart each time I see her. So very glad Tokwe is back home safe with her Herd! What a scare that must have been!
Oh My! Did Tokwe give us a fright! But she's a very smart Matriarch and she made her way back to the Homestead on her own. That was a good move to say "come Meisiekind" They all know that call!
I wonder if she saw the newborn baby elephants from the wild herd. In any case, she's home safe and sound. Fishan and the rest of the HERD were so relieved!
In the beginning when the herd took off after Tokwe, Khanyisa was called back by Adine. I SO admire how Timisa n Khanyisa listened n stayed w Adine - WOW. Tokwe is a braveheart leader, protector, guide n Mother to her herd. It's SO beautiful to see... n to realize this herd is a group of orphans who grew up to be the perfect family. So many miracles here. (Yes donations on the way.) Blessings to all, man and animals.
i wish i could help you buy a radio, i dont have enough money to donate that much but i donated for a spotlight! thank you for all that you do.
I know Tokwe is brave and determined but with plenty of sense. But she certainly gave HERD and most of the subscribers a good jolt. Happy everything worked out...also glad no one was in her way as she came barreling forward past Adine's vehicle!!🫣 And poor, dear Fishan...so worried about his close friend and the huge relief he felt on her safe return to the Homestead. Everyone was happy. Bet Tokwe was ravenous that night after she settled. Her girls were no upset until Mom was safely home. Blessings!!🐘💗🦋🕊🇺🇲
❤❤❤
Fishan --what a provoked reaction from him. A Herd reaction at the start but later individuals react to the Situation. Looking it up on Google, Elephants have poor peripheral vision and straight ahead is limited to 25 feet. Something startled her--car lights Carer's flashlight or something moving in the bush. I'm happy she made it safely back to the 'Homestead' where her other charges had gathered.
That's why i love Tokwe❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘
Pray🙏❤️for you all
Tokwe glad you are back safe and sound to the homestead.
I've always said. Towke and the others in the Herd were wild. Just the right scenario.and you see their total independence. Really it's their choice to always return to the homestead. She is a incredible matriarch, and she and Lundi have decided that it's the wilder elephants that entice Mambo, so their going to chase them. Also territorial. Wonderful video. I'm so glad she returned safe and unharmed. She is very very smart and fierce.
Wow, that was very concerning. Tokwe is a great elephant and right on top of things with the Herd. It is so interesting to see that every member knew exactly what to do and when to do it to protect them. Love these elephants.
I'm so impressed at how the carers took off after her. Regardless of the danger that might have been waiting for them, they just ran straight after their girl. So glad Tokwe and everyone made it back safely, that was quite an adventure.
She definitely made sure everyone got their exercise in for the day 😅
Wow!!! My heart felt like it was beating 100kms a second watching this video !!! When she turbo-charged past Adine..... !!! I'm so glad she went back home safely. This is a brilliantly put together video showing us how everything started off earlier in the day when Tokwe sussed out a problem and immediately went off to check it out. By the looks of things she was the only one to get an inkling of something not being right, she let the others know that she was going to check it out,off she went. Brilliant matriarch!! Another reason of this being a great video is that it shows the dynamics of a herd that's so well connected with each other that when something happens, every elephant knows their job within the structure of the family in an instance. Some went off with Tokwe as backup, some stayed back to look after the kids. On the way home Fish was looking around for Tokwe but still went in with the others. Clever boy, he knew what was up but also knew his place was with the herd keeping an eye out for their safety. The way he straightaway went to greet Tokwe when she got home. It's wonderful to see the carers at their best, how they know their elephants so well they knew Tokwe was going home. It was a privilege to see all this act out from beginning to end. It's through all the hard work of filming the elephants and the education you give us,the public, that we learn so much about our magnificent beasts. For this, thank you. Sometimes these two small words cannot sufficiently express heartfelt gratitude, but THANK YOU. You guys at HERD are heros. ❤
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Susy! You are so kind! It makes us so happy to hear you enjoy our our videos and learn from them ❤️
Whew!!!!! Luckily Tokwe knew her territory well enough to find her way home!
True! If I remember correctly one time when Mambo took off trying to catch up with a wild herd, he became lost and I think it took several days for the carers to find him and he was happy to be found.
E sua madre Lundi gli dette una bella lezione con la proboscide.🫣
Tokwe is really the captain in the plane 👍👍👍👍👍. And very intelligent. Safe back home. Thanks to you all 👍. Hi khanisa ❤️
😊🤗
How brave is Tokwe to chase off the wild elephants single-handedly?
How brave are Adine and the carers searching for her in the dangerous bush at night?
I am glad they are called carers and not keepers because their care is so obvious. I could not believe how fast they ran after the elephants even though there was danger ahead.
Behind every successful man, there is a good woman, but behind these two successful matriachs there is a team of top notch carers!
@clairetomkyns175 AMEN to that!🐘🇺🇲
Thank you for your kind comment, Claire! 💚💚
I noticed how fast the carers took off as well!
SO HAPPY TO HEAR GOT HOME BY ITSELF
And on this episode of today’s Elephant Soap Opera…… Mama Tokwe takes the humans on quite the nail biting quest!! My goodness this girl’s wanderlust really was kicking in perhaps it wasn’t just the wild herd that had her attention but maybe she had a hankering to relieve those adventurous days that ultimately led to her “date” with a wild bull & as a result we have Limpopo!😂🤭In any case what a relief that our Leading Lady of Jabulani was found safe and sound able to be reunited with the family who depends on her so much!! Thank you carers and Adine for your never ending dedication to this wonderful family you are appreciated beyond words & as a note:for those who may say as they did when Mambo was out past curfew “oh well why don’t you just leave them be or “let them go”? The main reason is that this entire herd has been & is completely dependent & fully comfortable around the people who care for them for more than 20 years and as a result both bc of their ease around people as well as the fact that the Kapama reserve & surrounding area is a tourist area with multiple lodges (not just Jabulani)it would not only be unsafe just to leave them be both for the ellies & humans but also incredibly irresponsible too. Never a dull moment in Kapama that’s for sure much love/trunk hugs to all.🐘🫶🌳🌳
They are there for Life. It's no joking matter. They would starve to death and they are saved because of porches, whom killed their Mother's. The land is owned by Aldine Family. She's dedicated her Life just as the Caretaker's. If you can't understand that. Then you and each one that Agreed with you should simply find your Rick's elsewhere! Save! help or be mote the.
@@suggraham7964 *@shannondominguez9725* 😮....I thank you both for explaining/giving backstory & a fantastic African summary with understanding & knowledge which was very clear & easy to process regarding this wonderful Elephant-land. *YOUR COMMENT SHOULD BE📌PINNED📌ON THIS CHANNEL. It helped me to shut down "dominoes effect bias mind". I thought of Matriarch Tokwe in the Queen👑position on the Chess Board game. The Chess Board game Queen♟️can move in any direction giving a majority win-win solution. Our Queen Matriarch Tokwe is in a win-win position with our lovely Elephant herd which is great along with what Aline & the Park Rangers are doing. Interesting how as it was getting darker & without the moon🌚light not yet setting how difficult it was for "humans" in the natural unable to see/locate/trace Matriarch Tokwe in this emergency. How great that our rescued Elephants can roam "safely" and "freely" without "chains" with support from Adine & park rangers? Don't we humans need proper & right equipment to do "our jobs" with the right tools? This was a brilliant report bringing another dimension to the roles of a Park Attendant😊 (apologies if I've got their job title incorrectly)
@@suggraham7964thank you so true😊
what a phenomenon!!! Tokwe !!! I am surprised because she is the Matriarch but she would defend its herd !! you have to buy loud speaker to call them when they go away !! 😂🤣 💕🐘💕🥰🤗👼 she came back to the homestead alone ! it’s incredible they love so much themselves !! Elephants amaze me every day ! ❤
It’s rather terrifying to think of any of the herd being separated from their family. What a complete family you all are... stay safe.
☮️🍁🍂
My eyes are filled with tears thinking of the courage and devotion of Tokwe. We have so very much to learn, from this family of ours, about devotion, courage and priorities. She was out there alone making clear the line of demarcation. It’s so simple. We humans complicate. ❤
So glad to see everyone is safe at home.
So glad she’s back with her herd! I wonder what was going on with her? Did she recognize the wild herd, protecting her herd? So much anxiety!
Unfortunately we can’t be sure what exactly was going on this day, and whether she went to chase the wild herd or to assess whether they were a threat. But we’re very glad she’s back, safe and sound 😊❤️
Tokwe ensured the herd’s safety, quite the protector. Chasing after the wild elephants.
Takk!
Thank you so, so much! ❤️❤️
Phew...Tokwe you gave us a bit of a stir! Glad you came home.
I am glad all the elephants are safe and sound. I have been wondering for a while how well elephants see so it was curious to see Tokwe rush by you all in the dark. Poor Fishan, I hope he was able to calm down once Tokwe was safely back. 🥰😊❤🐘
Elephants don’t have the best eyesight, especially not in low light, but it doesn’t really inhibit them as they rely much more on their other senses. They can become a bit tense if they can’t use all of their senses though, such as if there’s wind (which limits what they can smell) or mist (which limits what they can see).
We believe Tokwe was just very stressed and wanted to get back to her herd as soon as possible. She knows Adine and the carers and knows that she’s safe with them, but the elephants are her priority 🐘❤️
Tokwe was defending her herd, it's tuff being the Matriarch. So glad she came back on her own.
Tuff???

Their instincts and bonds are unbreakable. I'm so happy there was a good outcome, but I'm sure everyone was anxious when Tokwe vanished. Imagine how troubled she was to rush away from the herd. She has a strong and brave heart for protecting her family. ❤ I find their sounds in the night and at a distance are haunting.
This is exactly why Tokwe 🐘 is the matriarch. Obviously she felt she needed to protect her family. When you all were out looking for her and she came running out of the bush I thought Tokwe 🐘 was going to run right into Adine's car. How smart she is running back to the homestead in the dark. I am so happy that the Jabulani HERD 🐘 family is all back together again. I know that Fishan 🐘 felt relief once Tokwe 🐘 was home.❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
I was ever so happy to see Tokwe tucked in with her :) Thank you for taking such wonderful care of the herd
The capture title should praise Tokwe for being a 'Brave Matriarch Defends her Herd!' She fearlessly went off to investigate the threat, as any wild elephant would do, to ensure that the future of the herd can continue and therefore her place as Boss Elephant. Although, Tokwe and her herd can never be free, their natural survival instincts are intact. This action by Tokwe is not in the same category as going off on a nights jolly. Well done Tokwe for showing us your purpose and role in the herd. Love also that Fishan and others stayed behind to watch over the little ones, which Tokwe to go off and do her job. A note for us humans, unfortunately we can only hear the loud trumpeting, but the herd I am sure could hear Tokwe's rumbling throughout this event outside our frequency. Elephants are truly amazing!
I do understand though that humans would indeed be concerned due to the threat of predators both animal and human. ❤🐘♥️
It definitely was not her seeking a good time. 😀 That would be very irresponsible of a matriarch. She was in a rush to get back to her family. And she was welcomed back with great love.
I was not worried about predators attacking Tokwe, but I definitely was for the carers.
Hmmm. More thoughts than words. Thankful she is home and safe.
And lots of feelings!❤❤❤❤Herd and carers❤️❤️❤️The Real Matriarchs of the Bush! ❤❤❤
Tokwe said "not on my watch!"...and off she went. Fearless! Good job girl!
Tokwe at first was concerned to protect her Herd of the wild Elephants but she let herself be taken by the call of the Bush and the exitement that goes with it The breath of adventure carried her away for a few hours on Matriarch's responsibilities to finally return at full galop to her Family where she was welcomed as an heroine with relief and with love by her friend Fishan and "her children" ❤🐘❤

She can MOVE AT A TREMENDOUS SPEED! TERRIFIED as she came crashing towards you from the Bush.
I saw the two items on the wish list. Although I cannot afford to purchase a radio, I’d rather not purchase a spotlight as I’m sure HERD will get many of those. Is there anyway you can set up a general donation fund so those who can’t afford the full purchase price of the radio can contribute toward a radio fund? Please consider this!! Thank you. So happy to see Tokwe home and back with the herd.
Me too.
It's a donation, not a purchase. It says that the donation will help them to purchase the item locally. So you can donate for a flashlight and they will spend the money however they see fit, a certain amount of flashlights and radios.
Thank you so much for your kindness! 💕 @carmenl163 is correct, the donations we receive for the spotlights and radios will go towards the same fund. We will use the combined amount to purchase spotlights and radios 😊

So many moments in this short video, from Tokwe running off to investigate and the carers racing after her; to Jabulani, Sebakwe and Fishan staying with the younger ones, and Baby K going to Adine for reassurance; and the search in the darkening bush despite the dangers. A 24/7 responsibility, What's the daily and nightly schedules like, it all seems caring and loving, just like a real family. 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘💕💕
The carers head out with the elephants early in the mornings, and they come back to the homestead with the herd around sunset. During the day the carers work in two shifts; the shifts switch in the middle of the day. During the evenings, the carers stay in houses right next to the homestead, so they are able to check up on the herd immediately if they hear any commotion 🐘 It certainly is a 24/7 responsibility!

Oh, wow! So much drama and concern! I’m glad for the happy ending. I’m glad it didn’t go on for longer than it did. Dear Tokwe.❤🐘
Do you have a good guess as to why Tokwe took off and didn’t return sooner?
Unfortunately we can’t be sure why exactly she decided to go after the wild herd that day. She was alarmed by something, but we don’t know if she went with the intention to chase the herd off or to assess whether the herd was a threat. We also can’t be sure what exactly she was up to while we were searching for her. She wasn’t injured, so she likely didn’t have any aggressive altercations with another elephant. But whether she just took her time to assess the herd, was on her own, or did come into contact with the herd and was with them, we don’t know. The exact details of Tokwe’s time away from the herd will likely stay a mystery.
What a relief to see Tokwe back with the herd! Phew!
Very worrying for you all but great news she returned home. She truly knows home is sweet home❤
I think Tokwe had a date with a handsome and charming “Wild Guy!” I guess we’ll see!!! ❤️🐘💙🐘❤️🐘💙🎊🎀🎉

Holy moley, I was not expecting this video! I wonder why she decided to run off and stay away so late? :O It was kind of freaky when she bolted past everyone and just kept going in the dark!
I'm so glad she managed to make it back safe and sound. I would have been so worried and stayed out all night looking for her. :D
Thank you for Protecting the Herd Queen Tokwe. This was a very upsetting and frightening experience for Special K. Poor baby, but the Ellie's began to move toward and protect their Younger One. Queen Tokwe is proud of each. Queen wasnt terrified of Anything it was her PROTECTIONS of the Herd. She realized she'd left them. So she hurriedly to the Homestead.
Yes! We will contribute for the Lights and batteries. It is December so Maybe allot of people are taking IRA'S AND QUALIFIED PLAN DEDUCTION AND it will help via Tax exempt.
Thank you for taking care of the orphan's.
We would be depressed without them, I know I would be.
Thank you so much for your kindness! ❤️❤️
Meu senhor ... Até Tokwe dando preocupação ... Ainda bem que voltou , o medo é uma elefante sozinha a mercê dos predadores , leões , hienas , por mais que seja grande e corajosa dá medo deixar sozinha no escuro ...
I urge your team to consider looking into adding a night vision drone to your wish list.
They use light from the stars and the moon to illuminate the land below very effectively.
It will also enable you to excellent daytime distance viewing and make for some excellent video, of course.
They are quite capable and with some practice you can see very far and identify your missing family member.
Tokwe came past Adine hauling and did not stop tense moments yes.!!!!!! little K knows she can come to Adine if something happens she does not understand!!Mambo we have seen number of times of him rising to the occassion and taking care of business for his herd when the alert goes out. Fishan worried for his friend three or four years of viewing the dispatches from the bush always se and learn somthing new. state of the art communications radios high power lights hand held and lights for the vehicles we can work on that for you,,,,the cares what a group!!!!yes ma"am you got the right people.....usa.
TOKWE YOU ARE THE BOSS! That was exciting but nerve wracking at the same time.
Look at Tokwe GO! Protecting her family and then gong back to them! Amazing! Outstanding performance!❤
Well said! Thank you so much for the support!
Brave Tokwe working the perimeter of HER range and securing it. Just think you all could have just had a boring night at home 😂 but Tokwe is keeping the night spicy.
Just spicing it up 😂 There’s never a dull moment with this herd!
Thank heavens Tokwe found her way back to the herd!! Also I tried to go to the links that you posted (I live in the United States) and for some reason was not able to complete the information you needed, so I will try again later.
I vividly remember the previous video and had asked in the comments, what was the outcome of Towke and others as well has the carers sprinted off into the distance. Now I know! We will never know what triggered Towke by the wild elephants but Thank Goodness she's alive and well. Tearing through the bush at night was terrifying, but somehow, I knew she'd end up back at the stables. What a scary thought that something terrible could have happened to her, when hearing her trumpeting in the bush before she appeared. Same goes for Sebawke when he decided to spend a night out in the bush, yet appeared the next morning. I suspect there are times when their WILD side takes over and they have to do what they have to do.
OMG,, I ALMOST HAD DIAHORREA
