It is MSAA and HFTS combined, both options are performance demanding. Playing the game on Ultra Preset (where only SMAA is activated and ultra shadows) gives you a nice performance boost.

Does have the advantage of my rig being able to run at higher than ultra settings at full 4k without dropping a beat from 30fps. Not ideal but since 1080p/60 isn't guaranteed I'd rather settle for 30 and have all the bells and whistles enabled.

Sheppyi Actually, whats draining performance is the extra details slider. Its insanely demanding, and even warns you about it when you are in the pause options. Post-processing anti-aliasing such as MSAA x4 isn't even the max on this game.
Apart from the textures/aliasing, low doesn't even look that bad. I'd rather have it playing at a steady 60fps rather than trying to run it at 30fps while it tries to render all of the minute details that I'm not even looking at

That's not what bad optimization means in general the lower the requirements needed to get good performance is when a game has good optimization. With this game it's nowhere near lower requirements.
3 years took for someone to even correct this dumb comment? The game IS the definition of horrible optimization. Even MSAA X2 or off and anything below ultra sets. performance is mediocre to say the least. Even on high end cards that should be running the game above 100fps... like it does happen with any other game... but Ubisoft games. Why? Cause they suck at optimizing or they just dont care.

I have my game locked at 30 fps and it feels pretty smooth, and i'm a guy who cannot stand 30 fps in most games. plus, most of the options have a very small performance impact. you also have to realize that some of the graphics options are for advanced computers or other stuff. extra details literally increases the LOD for all objects. MSAA has always and will always be performance intensive. san fransico fog is also extremely performance intensive. just ignore those settings, set textures to your vram limit since they take 3 frames at most, set everything else to whatever, enable temporal filtering, and then use SMAA. not that hard.
Look at ultra, not max. Max are the settings for people that have the spare gpu power. The differences between the ultra and max are almost nonexistent.
Lol at the shadow quality, Ultra best them all. Screen space reflection sure looks great but I don't understand why they add it in the hackers hq..Overall there's no real reason to set the game at ultra unless one has the power for it.

ImFnT People tried to say the graphics are bad. The lighting is actually just realistic. I guess no one has ever been outside on a sunny day by the beach because good graphics to them just mean it needs to be darker.

Not using temporal AA is why the frame rate is so bad, it has a significant performance benefit and looks much better than MSAA, plus those shitty (imo) nvidia shadow techniques that give you weird soft shadows. I prefer hard crisp shadows.
The only thing that changes its the frame rate. Also about the shadows. Just change them in the settings and change water too. Thats it. You have ultra graphics with still decent fps Also put the extra detail thing to max almost every pc can run that.

I don't understand why people have to play in ultra that too ubisoft games . I have this game and I play in very high and it runs in 60fps but while driving dips to 45 fps
Nah, they just have some really demaning settings in the game, such as that "Extra detail" setting, HBAO+ not to mention that they are running 4x MSAA and SMAA (and they usually run the games 1440p to I belive) so it's not a bad port, just more future proof I guess.
Actually they did quite a good job with it. Ultra is what you should be looking at. The "Max" settings are the "on and beyond" kind of settings. CDPR knew that people would have such reaction so they pushed the ridiculous setting in Witcher 3 out of the settings menu. You can still have them, you just have to set them yourself in the config file. People don't seem to understand that right now what was once "ultra" is now pretty much "medium-high". Changes in graphical fidelity over those settings are really subtle and hard to notice but take a huge toll on a gpu.
The frames per second or FPS, so how many pictures are send to your monitor in a second. The higher your settings are, the more your system has to struggle. To have a smooth gameplay you need a minimum of 30 FPS, better would be 40. I can´t say about higher framerates. Some argue that everything above 40 FPS doesn´t make the game look better, others say that you have a much smoother and better looking experience with 60 FPS.
My PC specs: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Intel Core i3-2120 CPU @3.30GHz 8.00 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 And I'm still able to run the game smoothly (but still lags like a little bit), but on low settings and low framerates due to my small 1366x768 screen.

For me it´s all about AA and Textures and just in very few games Water,Lighting,Reflections or Shadows. Like here because the Shadows on low look so bad...jittering around and that stuff gives me a headache. lol

There Sems to be a Problem on Max... my Rig with 1080 GTX make a better Performance in 1440p like yours on Max in 1080p.... :D and the right Setting calls Ultra... you forget the middle Settings of the Game...

And the medium setting is not the mid. As you can see in the end it is low medium high very high ultra, so actually high is in the mid.
I don't get it, I run GTA 5 on ultra in 70 to max 95 fps but in watch dogs i have 40 - 50 on high without MSAA, HBAO and stuff like that. I have gtx 1060 btw

MSAA is for the EDGES Smoothing so msaa is not recommended for every pc EVEN low settings looks well :)

Guys there's a setting that gives more performance. It also comes with 2x MSAA. DONT do MSAA alone or MSAA 4x 8x. Just increase the res a little

What's the difference between Ultra and Max? I thought Ultra usually IS max.
Tiparium Ultra is close to max but there are usually some higher options in things like anti aliasing

I bought this game on G2A for only Asia Uplay, turns out the game only had languages based on Chinese, Korean and Russian, wtf why no English

Flanker Flash probably not if you didn't buy a version that contains that language. maybe you can download it. or ask them how yo get English language.
There Sems to be a Problem on Max... my Rig with 1080 GTX make a better Performance in 1440p like yours on Max in 1080p.... :D and the right Setting calls Ultra... you forget the middle Settings of the Game...
+DrProof - Imperator der Spielkultur no. Activsting msaa or txaa always costs Performance, that is why on ultra it is not activated. Also the nvidia shadow settings are not activated on ultra preset. And the medium setting is not the mid. As you can see in the end it is low medium high very high ultra, so actually high is in the mid.
hm the nvidia optimal setting from experience activate them automaticly with the new driver from yesterday
I don't get it, I run GTA 5 on ultra in 70 to max 95 fps but in watch dogs i have 40 - 50 on high without MSAA, HBAO and stuff like that. I have gtx 1060 btw
