    I wouldn't worry about dumping steam. If this is at all realistic, the operating pressure should be around 16bar. A safety valve will make sure that the boiler does not exceed its limits by dumping steam. There's no need to dump steam manually. Boiler explosions in the real world were caused by the water level dropping too low causing the heat of the fire to weaken the boiler. If you keep the water level up, your only concern regarding steam pressure should be to keep it up.

    • @goawaygoawaynow
      @goawaygoawaynow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      This is what it looks like in the real world: th-cam.com/video/o0LO-7QGFxY/w-d-xo.html The engine, pulling a heavy train and producing lots of steam, comes to a stop at a signal. The steam is suddenly no longer needed, and the safety valve releases the excess pressure. While perfectly safe, this is of course a waste of coal and water. The fireman will endeavour to keep boiler pressure just below the safety valve release pressure for maximum performance without wasting fuel.

      @raphaelsmithwick4363 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      im sure some of them safety release valves wouldve failed time to time in which case to much steam pressure would cause an explosion

      @@raphaelsmithwick4363 For early locomotives, there were some incidences, but more modern boilers are pretty safe in that regard. Safety valves are simple things, and multiple are provided on a boiler. Their function is checked regularly. If they fail, they are likely to fail in the open position. Again, a fireman is mainly concerned with keeping the pressure up. Safety valve activation is avoided because it's wasteful, not because it's a safety concern.

    Also, most people don't realize there is an emergency valve (also called a pop off valve) on the top of the loco that gets rid of excess steam automatically. The steam dump valve is really only used when your shutting down the loco

    When you describe the blower, what your actually speaking about is a Damper... the Damper (described as Draft in game) opens a doorway either in front and or behind the fire box allowing more air to pass over the fire (and only has a noticable effect when in motion)... a Blower directs steam from the boiler up the Chimney which increases the vacume in the Smokebox, this creates more of a draw on the fire, when in motion the locomotive does this anyway as the exhast from the cyclinders is also directed up the chimney as such the blower is only used when stationary (or when coasting In or in tunnels) to maintain a draw on the fire when the locomotive isn't drawing naturally, (i noticed you corrected yourself a few seconds later... but thought i'd leave the post for the technical explanation)

    Tips: I'm not quite sure how accurate the steam loco controls are in the game compared to a real life engine, considering the throttle is the opposite compared to how a real one functions; however, a helpful tip for when there's to much steam pressure (since this is mimicking a coal fired engine) closing the dampers/ the vents below the firebox will "reduce the amount of air" to the fire and lower your firebox temp and pressure instead of you needing to blow off steam so often. Plus the control for the damper is right next you the engineer feet so it's a lot quicker and easier. If this doesn't work my apologies. I don't have the game myself so I can't test it. Great video btw!

    1. Looks like the game is too smart to allow you to prepare before taking the job. When you validated it on the start, it showed 13 minutes already passed. Not sure if it's a bug or not, though.
    2. About the second bell which surprised you, just after filling in the coal: during the stream someone said that the bell is SOMETHING which requires your attention, and it's yp to you to figure out what. Fuel/coal is just one of the possible reasons, not the only one.
    3. About the water level: the last time you filled it the level was clearly visible at the top. All the rest of the journey the lever was not visible at all. Since it could not go up over the top without you adding more water, I think it went down, below the bottom level of the measurement tube, and all the time you looked at it and said "it's full", it was actually empty. Again, during the stream someone explained that the tube indicates the range 70-85% of water level, not 0-100%, so the actual level could indeed go beyond the tube while you were not paying attention. You were lucky you still had enough water left to complete the job.

    • @HenryLoenwind

      It was at the top, he didn't close the water fill valve completely.

    • @captainflint_vka
      @captainflint_vka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see, didn't notice that. Thanks for the correction!
      Still, when he played it on stream, there was a moment of the tube becoming empty, then he filled it up, and it was really hard to know whether it's empty or full if there is no water level visible. Something for players to keep an eye on.

    no man, the blower is on the smokebox and it geneterates draft of the smoke thus getting more air into the firebox while stationary making a richer combustion but the blower requires pressure. you dontt need a blower if the wind is against you so you have air getting into the vent ant through the ashpan or if you have quite a good velocity. It's the same as a car or a plane when they need a richer mix in the combustion using more air per Kg of coal

    Start train, starts chugging water like a sponge.
    5 min into journey, Looks at water gauge...
    No visible water line. Ah, it must be 100% full.
    30 min later. Still no visible water line. Ah, its must still be 100% full.

    I don't think you need to switch points if you are looking at the white side of the sign. Driving the loco over those from that direction automatically switches the track when it passes over it. You only need to change them if you see the red side of the sign.

    Throttle valve is backwards... push it in to close, pull out to open. Safety feature so that if you're in a wreck or hit something you'd tend to close the valve, not open it.
    Not bad overall though.. but that boiler is toast, and so would you be with the crown sheet failure from having no water in it.

      No kidding... there's a couple of steps to it... open your water valve, start your injector, hope it catches, adjust water valve to keep it picking up water, wait for it to fill, close the steam valve, close the water valve.
      Repeat as necessary.

    Steam locomotives are pretty powerfull. The reason they got replaced with diesel engines was not because of lack of power, traction, speed,... but all about the high cost to run and maintain them.

    Where is the cylinder cock release? It removes water from your piston cylinder so you don't break your rods etc. The reason for these is that water won't compress and on a cold start engine or one that sits a bit like at a station, you will get condensation in the drive cylinders.

      Indeed in the UK at least the two positions are called Driver and Fireman might use different terms in the US but the fireman would be responsible for loading the coal into the firebox, managing the water etc to maintain the operating head of steam in the boiler so that the driver could concentrate on actually driving the train safely.

    They were smart in designing the steam loco. It looks not quite American, not quite Australian, not quite Chinese and not quite European. Even has kind of a Soviet look to it. It's a nowhere locomotive which is what they wanted, and a good idea.

    I was wrong.
