If you want to add light weight obstacles, a can of spray foam works wonders. Spray a blob here or there then use a bread knife to carve it. The beauty about spray foam is it is dense, and light (since it's mostly air). Use the high expansion gap filler type. you can carve ruts into it as well and then paint it up so it looks like mud. Using the water based liquid clear, you could even fill the ruts with glossy clear, when it dries it will look like water. Just thinking: if you wanted to make a winter section/snow, paint things in white, and off white and use gloss clear to make it slippery. If you wanted to make a "desert" section, you could use camo paint in tan, get some plastic cactus and it'd be gold jerry, GOLD. I am just getting into crawling and I might just make one of these. You could also just screw down your 'mountains" so you can rotate them, or move them around to change it up. When you're laying down the plaster, put down some old grocery bags first so it doesn't stick to your base. Pre-drill the plaster sheets though so they don't split when you put the screw in. Also use pan head screws so it doesn't crack your mountain. You could even use plastic washers to further protect your plaster work.

Seth is literally going through my dad's mid life crisis... Different terrain and obstacles you could easily swap out. Childhood highlights for real. Miss this. Best dad ever so dope this is giving me flash backs hahaha.

Looks awesome. I painted my micro-course with normal grey wall paint. Let it dry for a little time and then used dirt added with a brush. So its not glossy and you need way less spray paint. Spray paint works in my opinion best for adding some highlights...
With holes in the 4x6 base (think welding table) each large “mountain” could be modular with a few dowels on the bottom. Able to be moved around as you get bored with a certain layout
I may go out and buy a rc because of these vids lol. Also just a suggestion but it may look cool if you but some epoxy resin down to make it look like water under the log bridge
welcome back Seth!!! also, that track looks really well made! ( maybe even too good to expect from a person that hasn't even been in the hobby for more than a year, this coming from a kid that's been doing all things rc for 8 years ) hope you can get back on the trails! get well soon
This is pretty cool. Here in Belleview, FL at the flea market we've got a big one of these mini-tracks about the footprint size of a 7-11. They're always working on it and adding obstacles. Pretty cool hobby, and a nice way to expand it from just boringly driving those things around your driveway or whatever. One thing that bugs me is how light those little vehicles are on their suspensions and how they bounce/spring around which takes away from the "realism" which is really just an eye of the beholder thing and not a game-killer. I think I would try experimenting with adding weight up inside the body at the corners (gluing washers or sticky wheel weights), to increase the load on the suspension and tires a bit. This would decrease battery life and torque, but I think that's okay. More weight would be more traction and a more active suspension. I think it's worth a try.
funny enough, this is super common in the hobby. bouncy suspension is the #1 thing people try to get rid of in these small crawlers. If you look online, you can find compatible oil-fillable shocks. Lots of tutorials online explaining it, but they make these cars far less bouncy and much more capable
When I painted my house I cleaned up a paint spill with a rag and it was left to dry and got rock hard! So, I wonder if instead of buying the plaster stuff, you use old fabric that is really thin, bed sheets, or tshirts, cut to smaller pieces, then use leftover latex paint (maybe watered down?) “that would be going to a land fill anyway” and if the paints were dark colored, it would be stronger? Free (up cycle) and if something broke through it would be dark colored. Great video!

Its a nice start, the good thing about this scale is how easy it is to make tracks using model scenery, you can even use G scale items and build houses with balsa wood. I even use wood coffee stir sticks you can buy really cheap on amazon.
An old hobbyist trick for gluing landscaping in place is to dilute wood glue until it is watery and add a drop of dish soap to break the water tension. Put it in a spray bottle and saturate your aggregate and it will dry firmly in place with a dull finish. The nice thing is there a no toxic fumes.
Nice i have a indoor course i use in the winter then i take all the dirt back outside and collapse the table for the summer great idea you have cool course 👍
To attach the "sand" to your surfaces, LePages makes spray adhesive (water based) and that is actually an adhesive so it would work better than using the paint. Also for a clear, there are water based clear sprays, I use Varathane all the time. It is cheaper to buy it in brush form and since you don't have to worry about brush strokes, you can lay it on thicker on the track area.
