what people don't understand about mr. king is that hes gotten to do exactly what he wanted to do with his life. just be a professional musician for a living. hes perfectly content with it, hes played the princes trust, sold out stadiums, hung with he best at jazz festivals, blown up rock fesivals. he is exactly what all musicians should aspire to be. professional, creative musicians just trying to ake people happy while having as much fun as possible. thank you mr. king for everything
When I was 8 my brother took me to see level 42 live. That was my 1st live gig ever. For that reason they will always have a special place in my heart.
OMG i was there those flashes where me taking pics of mark with my camera . love it . i was a fantastic day . great to see mark and mike . enjoyed every minuite of it ,,xxx
Even after 30 or near 40 years now, people still don't get it. Mark started out as a drummer. His bass playing makes perfect sense to me because I am also a drummer. I don't have any idea of how to play a bass guitar but I know what Mark is doing and can follow him. Level 42 with Boon, Phil, Mark and Mike were exceptional, once in a lifetime band.
I always marvel at the fact that Mr. King doesn't get the credit he deserves. One time I had rideshare customer out of Blossom Music Center who was, I think, the 30-something bass player for Chrissy Hinds and The Pretenders (she's an Akron girl), and I mentioned Mark King as one of my favorites. At first, he seemed not to know him, and then said sarcastically, "Oh yeah, he's a slapper", as if that somehow meant he 'cheated'. I had to chuckle to myself how our now 32 and 40 year-old kids were raised on great music like Level 42, but I had never even heard this guy's name before.
I just watched Mark King play ‘something about you’ at the L.A Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins tribute concert. Taylor Hawkins loved the track and had previously recorded a version of in on an E.P with the Coat Tail riders. Mark king and Justin Hawkins worked with Taylor Hawkins and the coat tail riders on their song Queen of the Clowns. Wow, just wow!
Agreed! Killer performance without a doubt. Mark still has that sixth gear, he just chooses when to drop the hammer now. That is the luxury of being a legend.
If someone hears Mark King for the first time on this video, they'll never search out another. This is Guitar Center on a three day weekend level of playing.
Mark's true talent shows when he's playing groovy finger-funk lines whilst singing lead at the same time. And that's harder than slapping up a storm any day! (only perhaps not as flashy to the band wagoners) Singing lead while playing bass is fucking hard! In fact, it's much more difficult than singing lead while playing guitar because the bass doesn't usually come in on top of the beat. Plus, on bass you're usually playing linear lines, not just strumming chords! (like on the guitar)
As a jazz and funk bassist who also sings bass, fucking hell, you're right. Having to play a line while singing something different and taking care not to hog my own space in the mix is a task and a half.
Should check out Geddy Lee (Rush) too - he has to deal with singing and holding everything together with changing time signatures. Mark is still one of my bass heroes and a great guy too!
I don't care if this is not the best bass solo ever. What I know is he able to do music for living, can see the world, and perform in crowded stadium.. He living the best life that we can ever imagine.. I envy that
I will never understand why people put these "greatest ever" labels on stuff. They are just asking to get shot down. I've seen Level 42 loads of times & I can tell you that this isn't even close to one of Mark's best solos, never mind the greatest ever.
+luckyharry1000 If you don't care then why comment? You clearly have a problem with understanding the English language. Nowhere have I said what I consider to be the greatest ever bass solo so don't try & put words in there that I haven't used.
+luckyharry1000 You still can't read can you! I didn't criticise anybody for commenting on whether this solo was great on not, I criticised people for using the term "greatest ever" which I still haven't used, & won't use. Back to school for you dopey.
+luckyharry1000 The person who said "to be honest I dont care and dont know why I made a comment" is still commenting 2 hours later. That tells people everything they need to know about you!
While Mark is definitely in his comfort zone these days, I truly believe that he has earned the right and respect to pretty much do whatever the hell he wants to at this point of his career. At any rate, his solos are still gold as far as I am concerned. 32 years on and I am still truly satisfied by Mark's playing. If your really looking for some current, cutting edge, virtuoso grade bass playing then check out Henrik Linder with Dirty Loops.
High testosterone bass playing is the most awesome thing ever, and Mark King can’t be matched!!!!!!! To quote are you being served again “BLIMEY, HES WEARING A WHOLE COW”
He started as a youngster playing the drums. This heavily influenced his playing style. Oh and a good precision instrument makes a great deal of difference and performance achieved. 🎵🎵🎵🌈❤
I generally don't like slap bass solos that go on forever but Mark King is a master composer of melodies on bass as well. That's where his true talent lies. I mean, who wants to listen to Eddie Van Hallen finger tap a solo for two hours during a concert? It really gets old really fast. The same goes for slap bass.
Great bassist. I actually like what he does playing songs (while he is singing!!) than this kind of things. I saw Level 42 a few days ago. This man is an amazing musician.
Mark King is an extraordinary bass player and a great vocalist. He is also a great stage performer and his ability to sing and play complex bass lines at the same time is virtually unparalleled. I have always wondered, however--especially when he went solo--why he didn't end up playing with guitarists like Nile Rodgers, Steve Lukather, Hamish Stuart and Cornell Dupree; drummers like Lenny White, Steve Gadd, and Bernard Purdie (in fairness Gary Husband has been a good choice); keyboard players like Tom Coster, Michael McDonald, George Duke and Greg Phillingaines--top top funk/soul/pop/jR&B players that are/were at his level of skill and creativity and would have brought his music and performances to new levels.
i do not know what is join on here, i had a KB made for me a few months ago and I'm in freaking love with it!! has one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard, and this, this well doesn't remind me of that, maybe its the fact he is playing out of 10" speakers it doesn't sound too bassy anymore, i dunno lol
what people don't understand about mr. king is that hes gotten to do exactly what he wanted to do with his life. just be a professional musician for a living. hes perfectly content with it, hes played the princes trust, sold out stadiums, hung with he best at jazz festivals, blown up rock fesivals. he is exactly what all musicians should aspire to be. professional, creative musicians just trying to ake people happy while having as much fun as possible.

Amen to that brother.
When I was 8 my brother took me to see level 42 live. That was my 1st live gig ever.

Now work his balls..
Good comment pal.
And ...as far as i know... farming in his spare time....!!!
Forget the solo ... that bass guitar is AWESOME !!
too bad they are no longer made
I could watch and listen forever,Mark King is great.
Very Cool, Mark King is the BEST Bass-Solo-Guitarist 😊😉👍!!!.
As old as this video is I can see his skill is unbelievable but I'm more impressed with that fact that there are LED lights on his bass.
Damn straight 😅 that's one wicked cool bass
what a musician. long live the king
Level 42 are Brilliant 👍🏴

Larry Graham invented this style because his band had no drummer at the time.
Rhonda Smith is one of my favourites.
Truly one of the greatest bass players ever...
Without question.
Not even close
@@ciaranmurray4537 Who then?
I'll give you Nile at number 1.
His mom probably
Doesn't matter whether this is the best bass solo ever or not. His true talent lies in the songs not in the solos
This is the Guy that got me into Bass Playing in 1980... Still the best there is;-)) So good to see him around still..
Nikki Sixx is better
@@sodica81🤡
I just want to be able to play bass 1/100 as good as this guy.
No this may not be the greatest bass solo ever...but it was awesome. Thanks for sharing
Coolest Base Solo I've have heard soo far...
Mark King: making the bass a percussion instrument since 1958
Well under rated. As good with a bass as u get.
Strazziya Bochnov IV He did start out as a drummer.
Bass slapping has existed since the 1930s

This also proces why Mark King is also hailed as one of the Greatest vocalists of all time ever
A sheltered life some of you have led obviously
To all the jaydee fans Mark has chosen the status for the last 15 years or so .it speaks volumes 😆
I just watched Mark King play ‘something about you’ at the L.A Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins tribute concert. combien de jeux de cordes dans un mois ....ouah énorme..Mark King🧐
Mark king is my hero and I will play like him one day 😍😍😍
Espetacular esse baixo
If someone hears Mark King for the first time on this video, they'll never search out another. This is Guitar Center on a three day weekend level of playing.
This sounds like that section between songs in band practice where the bass player quickly checks his "new slap sound". 3 minutes of Em7
I agree
I like that part that goes "Thunketta thunketta thunketta thunketta POPetta thunketta..."
@IPA SOLÉ 😄😄😄😄
i never liked his solos. his normal lines are good though
definitely not the greatest ever, and not his best either

You're spot on there. I can't sing and play to save my life! Always singing the bass line in my head instead :)
As a jazz and funk bassist who also sings bass, fucking hell, you're right. Having to play a line while singing something different and taking care not to hog my own space in the mix is a task and a half.
It also means that the harmony in his music is just sooooo goood. Because, he controls both the melody and rhythm.
@@vitamc1213 Great point!

He's on another level!...... At least 42.

Quite simply The G.O.A.T.
Great footage! More please
He is the best i have seen and started out as a drummer !. There's hope for some of us yet
Should have stayed on drums.
High testosterone bass playing is the most awesome thing ever, and Mark King can’t be matched!!!!!!! To quote are you being served again “BLIMEY, HES WEARING A WHOLE COW”
It's rather a solo of one of the greatest, not more.
The machine gun triplets sound even more amazing with that TC Electronic effects pedal :)
Bass face and leather trousers...you don't get anymore 1980s than this...
lo que toca este muchacho !!!!! capo !!!
Read up on him. He's one of those that could pick up a £5 ukulele and impress just as much. Absolute musical giant and genuine gent
why is man not in the list of top 10 bassists?

Mark hands down the best Bass guitar 🎸 player on the planet, saw them live in Blackpool was in seated area and didn't use the seat. Amazing 😎🤟
where do you get your weed man
I love reading people criticising Mark King. It's like reading virgins discussing the relative merits of Kate Upton and Scarlett Johansson.
Well stated. No matter how you feel about the video title...no way you can say the man is not a talent.
Really in the 80s this was fantastic but now a days it is really outdated!
good music is timeless. I'm not saying this solo is.
That’s a hot bass guitar 🎸
this is what I do in my spare time. I play my bass like this .LOL! now that was a laugh .Great video peace!
Mark King is an incredible bass player, singer, song writer, musician and guy. I Love him.
Slappin' da bass man!
Come to America.
Wow super bass solo
amazing skill , killer timing, fantastic sound. all this on the isle of wight!

Check Wojciech Pilichowski, great bassit from Poland. He plays similar to Mark King ;)
Now this is a bass solo.
It’s NOT “SLAP”, it’s called “THUMPING”. Mark is King!!!!

Look at all the dials on that bass, crazy!
half of them are probably for adjusting the lights.
WHAT A unique TALENT !!! he owns IT!!
no
One day...he’ll master that instrument, mark my word!
Holy crap. I was there.
He looked knackered with that solo..
Saw him on a TV show in the 80's where he explained that he has to tape his thumb up as it used to split when playing.
I'd say he's doing it wrong then. 🤣
圧倒的ベースが主役、、カッコよすぎ
Hot damn when the singing came and the slapping continued
Mark King's thmub is made of iron!! DAYum
Damn, Mark is the shit!!! Excellent!
So, is he excellent or shit ?
