The overall goal of visiting the dentist on a regular basis is to stay ahead of emergencies. When you are caught off guard with a toothache, it's important to understand all of your choices. One of the most common questions Dr. Shaun gets asked is whether a patient should try to keep a badly damaged tooth by treating first with a root canal or take it out and replace it with something man-made. Some of the factors to consider are urgency, timing, budget, and priority over other dental needs. In this video, he discusses both procedures and what you can expect after each treatment option. This can be a difficult decision that your own dentist will help you make.
so as I sit here with ice on my cheek after a complex, and very intense extraction of a root canal tooth, I can tell you DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GET A ROOT CANAL!
I will make this long story as short as possible.
Had a root canal 8 years ago, it failed after 4 years because I have TMJ and clench. Crown loosened, decay began and I had it retreated. another 4 years and on xray they could see a shadow indicating resorption or decay. It was decay from the crown once again, being microscopically loosened from clenching.
Made appt at oral surgeons to have it extracted as it was a premolar, (tooth 29) and long root, and sat on top of my nerve.
The extraction was intense and I mean intense and my oral surgeon is nationally recognized, and highly skilled.
It took him almost 1 hour and he took breaks because of my jaw (tmj) they had to reveal my jawbone, drill away bone to take it out in tiny piece by piece because root canal teeth shatter like glass when you try to remove them. The older the root canal the worse it is.
I had intense swelling and pain in my jaw. They did bone grafting also.
I will NEVER get another root canal, I will opt for extraction and implant if possible.
But no more root canals. I have one more in my mouth and I assume it will shatter as well when the day comes to extract it.
Be careful guys, the root canal will fail eventually and it will be a very difficult and painful experience for extraction and healing.

Not to mention all the systemic and debilitating health issues root canals can cause! I’ve been living it for years!! Getting the 3 I have extracted by a Biological Dentist in just a few days. Can’t wait to get my life back!!
From experience I've learned that root canals are not a permanent solution. It sometimes takes 20 or 30 years for a root canal to fail but at one point it will fail, requiring extraction anyway.

I’ve had 3 and now I am seeing a Biological Dentist and going in for my first extraction in just a few days thank God!!! Maybe then my body can heal and get better and I can have a life again! I don’t even know what it’s going to feel like after years of suffering! I can’t wait to have my life back!

I've had about half my teeth extracted ( financial reasons ) never bothered with brisges, replacing teeth or anything. No significant problems, really. I just adapted. Extraction is cheap, fast, and gsts rid of the problem. ..

I've had several patients say "my root canal did not work"... upon examination I learn that the root canal worked just fine. The problem was they did not restore it properly (ie. crown).

Had mine redone one month ago, the 2-3 weeks after, a pimple whitehead abscess appeared again. I take it that has nothing to do with not having a crown put on it yet? The endodontist never implied it was make or break to get a crown on in weeks. In fact, it would just be even more money wasted if I paid for a crown on a tooth where the RCT failed again?
May I ask if root canal tooth with crown still got the chance to decay under the crown?

@@Nelly_Oleson no it failed. I had it extracted. Was a shock at first have my first tooth pulled, but I got over it.
I just had a pre molar extracted due to a root canal of 4 years that went bad and got a huge abscess under it.It was so bad i was getting head aches, ear aches, my entire side of my face was extremely swollen. After the extraction and one week of amox 3 times a day its all good, healing with zero pain or infection. I had a good amount tied up in that tooth so i said before i spend anymore id rather just remove it, so now i have to wait 12 weeks then i go back and if it healed nice they will talk implant options which im told some times you need a bone graft some times you do not. But for the people that have missing teeth and let years go by. Im sure thats a bone graft for sure.
So in 12 weeks they look at the healing and then decide if we can go forward with drilling and placing the implant. Then i have to wait 12 more weeks and if it heals into the bone , then i go to my general dentist and he orders and fits me for an abutment and a crown i am told. Which all together is a 6 to 7 month process not to mention i am putting some money aside each week because dental insurance loves to say nope to implants i hear people say.... So if i do my part i have 6 to 7 months to save to get this done. Am i missing anything or am i spot on? Ive done so much research and that tooth has caused tons of issues so i felt it was best to remove it rather than drop even more cash on it.
Just let it go. Wait for 2-3 years before deciding to implant.

Yea... proper treatment takes a long time, but in my personal opinion, worth it.
How are you doing now? I had a root canaled molar (a First Molar) of about 10 years fail on me, and decided to get it extracted. It's only been a month, but the huge gap I've been left.with is frightening. Going to see if orthodontist can use braces to pull remaining Second molar up with all the other teeth. It doesn't look like there's anything to hold a tooth in, so I'm probably looking at bone graft with zirconia implant.
@@debrabenavidez3382 Even if it's a back tooth. It can make a big difference in chewing, and I'm told teeth can shift and cause alignment issues. Just had molar pulled 4 weeks ago & I'm freaking out a little at the huge hole that's left.
How does a root canal "save the tooth" if it is already dead? If it is not completely dead, it most definitely will be after the root canal and crown is added. It is essentially a glorified tooth corpse at that point.
Ha Ha you make some good points in this phrasing here. Definitely this is a way to "preserve" as much of the natural tooth parts as possible and allow the roots to stay in place.
My dentist gave me those two options, but I don't have the expertise to make that decision. All I know is that my tooth is infected all the way to the root and is causing immense pain. I don't see why I'd want to keep a tooth that is infected. It seems like getting it extracted would prevent any future infection. What I do know is that when the dentist told me my options, he seemed more confident about extraction versus a root canal.
It sounds like you have an idea about what needs to be done. Whatever you choose, don’t delay or that infections can surely spread to other teeth.

The sad part is that many people choose losing their tooth because of a lack of money. We need Medicare for all!! Health is something no one should skip because of $$$$

Yes, that would be ideal. So a dental patient would not have to throw good money after bad (at least $1000 per root canal even with insurance) to have the same procedure done in exactly the same place and costing the patient money each time the root canal doesn’t solve the problem?
Medicare doesn’t pay for dental procedures anyway so Medicare for all would not change anything.
Not at all. The glass is half full and not half empty. If a full root canal is not done (as most are), missing any canals would later lead to low grade toxicity which will finally shorten your life with a stroke. You would report other chronic symptoms too. It is always better to extract the tooth than have a partial root canal. So choose your dentist wisely, know how many canals you have, check nothing is missed - the infamous MB2 and scan to see everything is normal. If you can't do this for want of them $$$$, extract the tooth and you would be happy.
Sadly - Even in the countries with the best medicare for citizens, doesn't include root canal or dental implants as they categorize them as elective surgeries.
In 1970 I had a root canal done on my front tooth when I was 17. About 5 years ago I broke that tooth off at the gum line and had a ?glass post put there with crown which immediately got infected and I needed antibiotics. It was always a little tender in the gum, but nothing that really worried me. Last week I had my teeth polished and developed another abscess which is in the bone and gum. I have seen two dentists. The first who did the polishing has referred me to a endodontist for some kind of root canal but I cannot get in until October '22. The second said I need to have the front tooth removed and a bridge made or implant. I also have finished 5 days antibiotics again, but no change in abscess. I do not quite understand what the endodontist would do as I already had the root canal all those years ago. I don't want to lose the tooth. But I know that the infection can travel and I am very frightened of that. Any advice would be gratefully received.
We are sorry to hear you are having such trouble with this tooth but just know you are not alone and your dental pros are the BEST people to help you get the treatment you need. Endodontists are often able to retreat the tooth if they see a reinfection. You'll want to let them know that you are unclear about HOW they will do the work so they can explain the procedure thoroughly. Good luck!
Why all the problems with infections after a root canal? That seems to be the core problem. Why can't caps be used without root canals in most cases? Why can't a cap seal over pulp? How does removing the blood/lymph supply aid in eliminating infection? Why isn't it preserved to fight infection? What kills bone infection after a root canal? There's so many questions that are not answered in these dental videos.

I had a filling fall out this year and because of covid it’s been hard getting into the dentist plus I’ve been really bad about taking care of my teeth so decay has occurred even more. 4 days ago I was eating dry cereal and WHAM the pain hit me like an ice pick through the jaw. My neck/cheek are swollen and it’s been throbbing constantly for 4 days now with intermittent severe (easily 9/10) pain which is accompanied by pressure that is only “relieved” by what feels like bubbles popping in/under the molar. Have you guys heard of bubbles like this occurring? At what point do you consider it a “dental emergency”? And is there ever cases where an extraction or root canal are done immediately? (I ask because my office is backed up for months and I think if I have to deal with this for one more day I will lose my mind).
Update: It turns out when I munched down on the piece of cereal, it cracked my tooth open and the nerve was exposed; it became infected and the “bubbling” was a combination of swelling from the infection and exposure of the nerve. I had go on antibiotics for a week before they could pull it; on day 4 when I went to get it checked because it didn’t feel any better; they emergency extracted it, as they were worried the infection was dangerously close to being too far gone. I then had to take very strong antibiotics for a week after. The pain after having it extracted was 1/3rd of what it was having it in. Absolutely worth just getting it taken out.
Hi, sorry to hear you’re in pain, it is one of the worst types. By now you may have progressed and had your treatment completed. If not, emergency dental treatment must be based upon pain, if you pains 9/10, I would class that as emergency. If left, you will find you cannot eat or drink without severe pain and even leaving the tooth alone it will still be painful, could end up waking you up at night, not sleeping and constantly walking around withholding your face. You may need antibiotics first, or the dentist may suggest root canal and fit you in pretty swiftly. The other option is extraction. As this vid says it’s all to do with finances. If you’re lucky to be in the UK and are NHS registered, root canal treatment costs around £62.00, if you are private it will probably be £500+. The root canal treatment is usually over two sessions, and then you may need to cap the tooth (crown, bridge) if the treatment weakened the tooth, (i.e the small crack you had is now much larger, threatening the stability of the tooth). Extraction is final, the gap left soon heals and you go about your life just keeping your teeth clean and healthy. The root canal, if done properly shouldn’t cause you any issues, but if a tiny piece of infected pulp is left you have the grounds for more trouble going forward. If you do go private for this treatment, find an NHS dentist and get your name on their waiting list for the future (if you’re a UK resident that is). Everyone’s teeth seemed better when dentistry used to be mostly NHS, nowadays unless you’ve stuck with NHS (and they didn’t go fully private), like us, you are lucky, as the treatments are all capped. Alternatives are payment plans, but cost depends on your current oral hygiene. Good luck and hope you get pain free soon.
Just came back from the clinic and one of my tooth needed filling but instead she recommended me to have a root canal.
I was thinking of having it extracted since I don’t have the money for the it. I still have 2 days to decide

I had my first root canal and it was all down hill from there with 17 more. And there is no reason to charge that much for an hours work.

I had a root canal once recently and I had some sort of reaction. Tingling on my tongue, lymph nodes, leaking nose. Tooth was ultimately removed and all allergic reactions went away. Definitely would have liked to save the tooth. I have another one (tooth 3) needs a root canal and debating to have it removed or root canal performed. I heard there is a partial root canal available- is that true? Thanks
It's always better to save the tooth than removing it, that's why root canals are needed ( I know it's pricey procedure but it's worth saving a tooth) besides it's better to crown the tooth after and don't leave it until it start to crack and changing colors, it might last few years but eventually it needs a crown sooner or later, so better to do the crown right after a root canal.
It is not always better to save the tooth. What is important is that root canal is done as the term states. A partial root canal is not a root canal. Most dentists miss the MB2 canal which could lead to long term agony. Choose your dentist wisely and get a full root canal if the tooth can be saved. Else, extraction is the best alternative.
I am getting my 3 root canals extracted by a Biological Dentist in just a few days. I have also had allergic type symptoms, congestion and sinus issues ever since I had mine done 15-20 years ago! Can’t wait to get my life back!
Root canals can cause systemic inflammation and debilitating health issues. Get those dead teeth extracted!! Nowhere else in the body do we leave something dead! 😒

Although we can never govern you advice specific to your situation, leaving an infected in place is never a good idea because of the long term consequences. Have a nice chat with your dentist to figure out the best treatment for you after you eight the option
My dentist did a root canal and later said my tooth needs to be extracted due to it being too low in relation to the gum line to put a crown on.
So sorry to hear. I'm sure your dentist was also disappointed in this end result. Sometimes getting a patient out of pain or infection is the first priority with the hopes that a crown can be placed. So many different factors involved. Good luck!
Your dentist should have known that to begin with. Some of them are too quick to do a root canal. They see $$ signs.
If it’s the rearmost molar, is there a problem with extracting it and not replacing it afterward? Other than the annoyance of missing a tooth.
Quite often, the opposing tooth (now with no one to bite against) could actually lose bone density around its roots and creep toward the empty space. It's a pretty interesting phenomenon that happens when bone forming cells have no reason to do their job.
Hi, I heard that root canal can give one flare ups or end up worsening other side effects like Sinus and Neurological defects so I have planned to go for a bridge. Is this helpful
Implants are your best option. Maybe in the future they will be covered by insurance
Are root canals safe for your health long term. I’m hearing horror stories saying they can cause heart problems brain problems and cancer in time because of the toxicity

@@janemorales1899 I’ve recently just had a root canal done but I think it’s too early to say how it will turn out. I do agree your health isn’t the first priority money is. However I have a broken jaw so tooth extraction wasn’t actually an option right now. I had a root canal done because the broken jaw broke the root of my lower Caine, once my jaw has heeled and if I think for one minute the root canal wasn’t successful I have no problem having it removed. I mean people took about infections ect even without a root canal this could happen you don’t need a root canal to have issues with your teeth.

i am the same, i thought of having the teeth extracted instead of the recommendation of root canals but we’ll see how that plays out. There is a dentist in LA that i may have check me out before i make the big decision- either way, it will cost $$

There’s definitely pros and cons for root canals, the thing you have to remember once your tooth is damaged either way you look at it, whatever the dentist does it’s never going to be like having a normal tooth, whether it’s a root canal an implant or if it’s extracted. I didn’t get a crown because I was so young now my tooth chipped because I waited 3 years and they said it might not be salvageable and i should get it extracted. I didn’t ask any questions because My parents were not there and I was in shock. I want to save the tooth but the dentist made it seem unlikely. Money isn’t really a issue because it’s my body and i’ll pay to save it. Should I attempt saving the tooth or extract it?

What if someone wanted a extraction without a replacement tooth.
Sometimes that is the only option. Although it's not ideal, definitely discuss this with your dentist
Teeth will move in to fill in the gap. Teeth seem to adapt to find out where to go.
If you get a tooth or teeth removed, you need something to fill in the gap, so get the implant.

After plenty of research this seems to be the most common recommendation of treatment from dentists. Always try and save the tooth and if that does not work out start looking into the bridge/implant root.
We find that as well. It’s important to try to maintain natural tooth structures when possible
Even if it’s dead and decayed… Root canal teeth no matter how well they’re disinfected still harbor bacteria because of all the tiny tubules in the Dentin of the tooth that cannot be disinfected. They can cause serious debilitating health issues. I know, I’ve been living it for years. Getting my 3 extracted by a Biological Dentist in just a few days thank God! Can’t wait to get my life back!

I am in pain right now cause I can’t afford to go to emergency appointment just financially impossible . Waiting till Monday so I’ll be in pain today and Sunday hope I can make it. And I want it pull cause it’s the cheapest. I just want it over. No one should be struggling financially in America working 50 hrs a week. Just sad

But still needed it extracted cause an abcess was on the bottom

During this week i thought i had an ulcer which had a white layer similar to leukoplakia but was able to be scrapped of with my finger.. i went dentist today to remove a wisdom tooth and asked him. He saw an infected tooth..that has it own drainage? Apparently because it has its own drainage there no rush getting it done. Yet i cant find anything about self drained infected teeth online. I want to be able to save it as it is one of my chewing teeth, but its almost certain i will have it removed due to lack of money
A draining abscess is still an infected tooth that could travel to surrounding teeth. Although we are unable to give you specific medical or dental advice, generally speaking any infected tooth needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Any discomfort after a root canal treatment should be temporary and gradually go away
Is a bottom wisdom tooth root canal still possible if there is already no crown and the dentin over the pulp is gone as well, or will I need a full extraction? My wisdom teeth are not impacted by the way, they are just difficult to take care of compared to the rest of my teeth and are all decayed, just 1 of them is questionable on if I should choose extraction (without getting an implant) or if a root canal is still possible which is the one on my bottom left

I had a really small cavity that never bother me so I went to the dentist to just get rid of it just to have a healthy teeth and after I did it now I can’t eat on this tooth no more and my dentist told me I have to do a root canal what should I do I don’t want to lose this tooth or pay for extra work because of something they did can you please tell me what to do ?
It would be impossible for someone to give you a course of action without seeing you in their office with X-rays.
It’s not uncommon for a cavity to hurt if it’s not past the outer layers of the tooth. Even removing decay can cause more loss of tooth structure that is sensitive .
This is not a pleasant experience and we are sorry but your dentist will need to help you make a decision about how to best get you comfortable
So today I went to my dentist appointment to have some fillings done on my upper molars and my dentist clean and filled a cavity but then tells me I'm going to need a root canal on that tooth that she filled so it wouldn't get infected more. I agreed to eventually do a root canal but now that I'm doing some research I'm seeing a lot of negativity about root canals. What is your opinion on this should I just get it extracted or get a root canal on a damaged tooth??
As you can imagine, the best person to help you make a choice for treating your tooth is a dentist looking at your teeth and x-rays. @@honeysenpaiii6196 hello! I think im just going to having it extracted I mean it's already dead so I don't think a root canal would benefit me. If it wasn't dead already I would probably go with root canal but I feel like it will eventually have to be extracted anyways so I might as well do it now because root canal aren't cheap and to pay all that money just to have it extracted a couple years down the road just doesn't make sense to me.

Unfortunately no im not going with implants I went with a bridge instead. Even tho I wish I could go with implants but it's way out of my budget. I'm paying all out of pocket no insurance. I went 10 years with two missing front teeth it was finally time to get my smile fixed!
What is the best option for a partially broken wisdom tooth(bottom tooth), due to a cavity that was there. Root canal or extraction? or a filling? I would like to save the tooth, if possible. I was told giving me a filling would be hard to do back there, the whole is slightly deep.
These questions will be BEST answered by the dentist you see for a consultation. Wisdom teeth can be quite difficult to isolate, fill, and then keep really clean over time.
Not sure if this is a joke or not. Unless in rare occasions grown straight, wisdom tooth serves no purpose but to disrupt other teeth. Most people extract them and do nothing.

@@iloveyou281000 Ah got it. Yea, most people I know had all gotten rid of either all four without question asked or just those creating problems - and that's the end of it. They are said to be mid-evolutionary flaws of homo sapiens; they mostly grow sideways and doesn't do anything but only create problems - pushing other teeth around and create bacteria. Consult your doctor, but to my amateur knowledge, "fixing them" is excessive, I'd be glad it's not the main set of teeth having problems.

Does tooth cavity affect our brain?? My teeth was constantly bleeding lately and im worried.
Infections (bacteria) from the mouth can travel into the bloodstream and cause problems in other areas of the body. If you Google "Periodontal disease and brain health"..... "periodontal disease and cancer", "periodontal disease and heart", "periodontal disease and diabetes"... you will find lots of information about how bacteria from the mouth can be connected to other health issues. Bleeding of the gums is never normal so we do recommend you see a dentist for an examination.
Had a root canal a month ago . Started feeling pains when ever I apply pressure just below my nostrils. This pain also reflects on my left front tooth. Do I go for a second root canal?
Our best advice would be to let your dentist or endodontist know how you are feeling so they can examine the area and give you next steps.
Hello Doc!!! Very nice video and thank you!! I have an issue where a tooth on the top of my mouth.. 5th tooth from the back has chipped off its about 5 percent of the tooth maybe.. its a fairly small area in comparison to the size of the tooth..but now my tooth is very sensitive to cold.. doesn't hurt to eat ..but sometimes it randomly throbs of pain off and on. Can you tell me if this would be something that could have a root canal or would this most likely be an extraction situation? The tooth at the gum line looks fine but where it mates to the other tooth (4th from the back of my mouth) it chipped off. Any advice would be helpful.. Thank you!

I got a 25% success rate for a second root canal. Do i got ahead? I went to a periodontist he recommended implant but that’s what he does for a living. Who can i go to for an unbiased opinion?
Honestly I’m on my 3rd root canal and it just failed. Debating in the same my general dentist said each time it success drops by like 10-15 percent so you should be okay. In my case I will be removing it. I have noticed if a lot of work is done to a tooth, your gaps under the gums will be bigger and you chance for reinfection will always be there
hi.. i just had a root canal retreatment last week ago feb 28 to be exact coz i have dental cyst on my tooth number 10.. is it better to extract it or i will continue to get the crown? the problem is, i have dental bridge on my front teeth together with that root canal tooth.. if they will put my bridge four crown im afraid if my root canal tooth gets problem again they will gonna break again my bridge.. ita like im throwing money for nothing if the root canal retreatment fail.. please help me to decide

It all depends on which half if under or above the level of the bone. Often times, pins and buildups can support a crown after a root canal if there is enough natural tooth structure to support a man made top portion of the tooth. Really varies from person to person.
I have to go this thursday and im so nervous, i dont have any infection but my filling is falling out and the reason for rooth treatment is that my filling is right on top of my teethflesh (jaw). Do you think it is reasonable to have a rooth treatent? Im 29 and if i have extraction would my Teeth move
Teeth do shift when there is a missing one so most dental professionals will tell you to keep any many natural teeth as you can. If you have a tooth removed, it would be best to replace it with a bridge or implant

Many patients experience referred pain into other areas. Our mouths are filled with closely related nerve that all connect.... It's common to have jaw discomfort from infections or referred pain as well.
I had a horrible run around on a badly decayed tooth huge cavity. It hurt me for 5 years and was infected. It's called going to lowes and picking up a 12 lb fiskars splitting maul paying for that and walking out of the store. Then driving to Lil Bit Bait and Tackle,walking in and buying an 80 lb test roll of braid spider wire and cutting 3 strands of that and braiding that. Go home and put a cobalt 1-16th spiral bit in the Hilti bite down then so the nerve is pinched and cut off drill through it then take your sledge tie the braid noose style around the grommet of the hammer then noose the tooth. Have 2-3 feet of slack between the tooth and the hammer head. Hold the hammer head up vertically then very fast hard upward thrust. You'll hear a pop and head jerk rinse with clean water and pack the socket with gauze and be gentle for a week. Hammer head up so you pull bottom molars out straight not sideways. It all happened so fast you don't have time to feel anything. I knew this because I was a logger all my life not a dentist but covid taught me the maul is My Dentist. You can also pull teeth with a skil Saw too ziptie the string to the blade and it will kick it out. I had to do what I had to do to fill that cavity.
The whole team at BURST is sorry if you had to deal with such terrible tooth pain.... and definitely this story is one of the craziest we've hear about extracting a tooth. DO NOT try this at home kids. Hopefully you have an imagination and some extra time to come up with this one???

I had my root canal for about 13-15 years ago and now i have an abscess on it, on my front teeth. My new dentist advised me to do a re root canal and drain the abcess. But I was considering it to be extracted thou still hesitant coz it's my front teeth and I have a braces now. Any suggestions please. Thank you!
I always feel rootcanal is just for some fixed time after tht time patient always suffer some problem so i think extraction is better
Demon. There are plenty of people out there that have had root canals done over 25 years ago with no issues. Using your logic, any time a tooth has an issue, it should be pulled and not fixed because it will probably fail eventually.

@@snakepl1skin It’s not only how bad the infection is, but also the condition of the tooth as well If there is a cracked root that can’t be detected, failure is likely.
Hi if a 45 year old woman had tooth extraction now what will be the solution for that extracted tooth please suggest.
Besides the extracted tooth one is root canal with crown and the other one (slope) forward bending tooth. Dr. Suggested by removing crown and adjusting the other they want to place a bridge. Please suggest.....
As you can imagine, every case should be looked at on an individual basis with all images, history and the patient right there in the room. Bridges and implants are both nice replacements for a missing tooth but it will be up to your dentist and/or oral surgeon to help you find the best course of treatment.

Yes, the root of the tooth being held in the bone with ligaments is still natural as well as the outer shell holding the root canal filler in place.

Every situation is different but dentists typically use a local anesthetic to numb the area so they treat accordingly. There are emergency dental clinics in most cities.
I honestly think its funny when ppl use term "save the tooth" when if fact when I do a root canal you killed thee tooth fully then artificial build a new 1 technically it's how it's described
Will a decay found under the crown ?
Decay can absolutely happen under a crown. Sometimes it's hard to see it early on even with an xray

I had a root canal and a crown. 6 months later the tooth failed and the tooth was pulled. A lot of money.

Had root canal done 10 years ago. It discolors without a crown but I don't think it's needed if it's not seen in your smile. I may cap it one day baby when we old 🙌🏽
Not always , but often a full coverage restoration is indicated. It depends on how broken down the tooth is to begin with. The force is quite a bit higher on back teeth so often they would be well served with a crown or inlay. A front tooth with minimal restoration and a small access hole can often be taken care of with just a filling. So basically, each situation is different.

Unless it is unreasonable to do so, it is always better to save a tooth. Meanwhile, in 2024, endodontists with microscopes and three dimensional x-rays can perform almost flawless root canal therapies.

Which one hurts the pocketbook more? A second root canal in the exact same tooth or a bad root canal and then an extraction?

I had both canine teeth root canal today.. the right one went fine the left one had me in tears! Half way through I had the worst electric shock pain. My dentist was baffled as he said I shouldn't feel anything & carried on until I was shouting just take it out!. He took xrays & said he doesn't know why & i may need it removed?.. any ideas what this could be.. I was thoroughly numbed & didn't feel anything till he was poking deep inside the tooth felt like hit a nerve?
Oh no. That is tough and we are sorry to hear about your experience. Sounds like a nerve was hit. Although that is no fun, some nerves in the face are hard to get numb and they are closely connected with others. Also infections can potentially change the pH of the. mouth, making if difficult to anesthetize completely.

You can do a root canal and possibly extract later but not in the reverse order. Once the tooth is gone, you’ll need to replace it with a bridge or Imolant or partial
