  • The HORRIFIC execution of Robert François Damiens: Robert François Damiens was born on 9 January 1715 in La Thieuloye, near Arras and was executed on 28 March 1757 in Paris for having attempted to assassinate King Louis XV. He was the last person in France to be quartered, a punishment reserved for those commiting regicide under the Ancien Régime.

    The more you look into history you come to realize most of the French Kings were more merciful and well intended than their counterparts.

    I know that Louis XV may not be everyone's favourite monarch but I think he showed a great deal of compassion and mercy in this situation. It's surprising that the king isn't allowed to oversee a case where he is the victim.
    Thank you for this fascinating video.

    Fun fact: all the expensive seats were reserved for noble women and while 7 men fainted watching this horrible event, only one woman did.
    Louis XV. nearly vomited while only listening to eye witness accounts. The only thing coming close to Damien's execution was that of Struensee and his friend Enevold Brandt in Denmark.
    Living in a medieval setting myself, I did research on our executions back in the day. We do have a memorial for the victims of this practice. It was heartbreaking for me to read the documents. We still have some of those in our city's archive.
    Anyway, I'm glad we don't have the death penalty anymore.
    Good video, Nieke!

    This story reminds me of Margaret Nicholson, who attempted to stab King George III of Great Britain. She used a simple dinner knife, which caused no harm to the king, and he immediately called out to his guards not to hurt her as "she was clearly mad." The attempt and the king's mercy boosted his popularity in the short term, but poor Mrs. Nicholson spent the rest of her life locked away in the Bethlem Royal Mental Asylum- commonly known as Bedlam.

    It's interesting that quartering was the specific punishment for regicide- horrible, but interesting! I'm not sure, but I think in England it'd just count as treason & be punished accordingly- hanging, drawing & quartering for men, & burning for women, but ofc nobles were often beheaded- would a French noble still be quartered? I think whether you got the privilege of beheading was up to the English king tho, & the French king didn't get a say here. I was most impressed by how merciful he was.

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed Louis XV was merciful, and he cared for Damiens' family after Damiens' death as well... I think he handled most honourably in this case...

    I've watched a documentary before about Louis xv it was said there that he ordered Damian to be spared but sadly he wasn't allowed to take part on the matter he was a victim with. If he had only establish his authority just like his great grandfather Louis xiv he would have been as great as his grandfather

      that was the great tragedy of Louis xv. one of his courtiers said he lacked self confidence and decisiveness. by the time he finally tackled the parlement, it was too late; pompadour, the incredulous treaty ending the austrian succession, the seven years war, the unequal taxation had taken their toll
