Here are my broad opinions of the three _big_ Cardinals in France:
Richelieu looked like a cat and took advantage of the King
Mazarin was the regent's sidekick and took advantage of the King
De Fleury looked like a nice smiley man who tried to keep France in peace and didn't take advantage of the King but tends to be forgotten about by the wider public because he was nice.

Superb series on the 3 cardinals. Thank you Nieke, he never took advantage of his position, in my opinion the best of the 3 lived to quite an age to. 👍😊

Such an education! I had not heard of Cardinal De Fleury before, but he sounds like a very competent (and long-lived!) statesman. Maybe not the most imaginative, but also you can't undersell quiet competence either, I think.

I must say, I like Cardinal De Fleury. He was so different from his predecessors. He was very influential but at the same time maintained the nature of a priest.
    P. S. The name Fleury reminds me of ice-cream (McFlurry).

Treating the King's cardinals as a series was a good idea. They were all political geniuses and did a lot for the monarchy. They often get underestimated, particularly Fleury, although he achieved a lot and lead a rather frugal life. That reminds me to read a particular biography again.
The "s" in Fréjus ain't silent either ;-) Damn french spelling!!! *lol*
Will you put a playlist together that features the cardinals, famous ministers and regents? That would be helpful.

@@TheKingsofFrance My voice sounds condescending, otherwise I'd be pleased to host a video. I would scare everyone away, so that's a pass, sorry. But I was lucky regarding royalty-free music from Lully.

I've always liked him ever so much, a deft diplomat, who at the same time remained worthy of his Cardinal's red, I mean I LOVE Mazarin but Fleury remained a priest as well....

I agree. The period of the Bourbon monarchy witnessed the lives of many extraordinary members of the French church. I'm thinking of preachers such as Bossuet and Massillon (who preached the sermon at Louis XIV's funeral and began with the words "Dieu seul est grand"). Missionaries such as Isaac Jogues and other martyrs and explorers of North America. And saints such Vincent de Paul, Louis de Montfort, or Jean-Baptiste de La Salle. And these are just a sampling of the names that could be named.

Personally I'd really love to, but I do see that in general, the views on videos like these are much lower than on more 'popular' videos. I'll see what I can do though.

@@TheKingsofFrance I decided to look and see which of your videos was the most popular and, to my surprise, it is the video on Françoise Marie De Bourbon, captioned "'Madame Lucifer: A Lazy Royal," with 74k views. I couldn't imagine why this one would be so popular. But then again, what should one expect from "cette génération mauvaise et adultère"?

    • @williamknox9087

@A W I think it could work with the appropriate title. Perhaps "Dubois QUADRUPLE slams Spain: Slaps the "le m**de" out of Alberoni"; or "Dubois: 'the odour of falsehood escapes through every pore of his body' - Duc de Saint-Simon"; or "The 8,000,000 Fr Red Hat BREAKS the Church!"
