What a joy and honor to work with Arlo on this adaptation of Foster's classic song. Hope it offers a small measure of solace in these challenging times.
In these days of such loss, there's a lump in my throat with this song, especially on the day we bury John Lewis. The song's a lament, but also a rallying cry. John left us both today too. "Though I am gone, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe." ~~~John R. Lewis. Thank you Arlo.
Fifty-three years after he wrote about a restaurant with the mood of America on the menu, Arlo serves up another dish, this time of encouragement, giving us all hope in the long tunnel out of Covid. With grateful thanks from Liverpool, UK.
Tears watching this. So reassuring coming from Arlo who has sung about all those times. I will never forget Arlo dealing with the question of whether or not he wanted to be tested to know if he had the gene that could mean he could get Huntington’s, the disease that his father had. What a lesson in living in the present with gratitude. I feel so fortunate to have had Arlo’s songs as the backdrop for life. Just knowing others see things through the lens of the simple Golden Rule is a comfort and makes me feel not alone. Thanks Arlo, for being a follower of the heart.
I have to listen to this song every day. Arlo and all of those who did this video and song need to receive a Grammy! I have attended two of Arlo's concerts. I enjoy both his songs and his stories. I love him as a performer and artist. I respect and like him as a person. While so many celebrities are plastic, fake, and remote, Arlo is a real person who cares what happens to other people. Alice's restaurant is one of my happy places, even though I have never been there, My dream would be to visit the center there. Arlo thank you for sharing your songs, stories and history with us.
I'm now 70 years old and so jaded that I seldom laugh or cry at things I see on the Internet. But, this had tears flowing freely. So much hate and injustice in the world that it is sometimes hard to see potential for change. I do hope these hard times might facilitate that change. Arlo has always been a hero to me!
The elder statesman of folk and country. There is an edge to the way Arlo is singing this that so reminds me of Pete a couple of decade ago. What a beautiful song.......now, where's me guitar?
Mercy... So beautiful. "This too shall pass". Trying to stay hopeful and positive in these hard times. So many things need to change. Thanks to all who played and sang.
A beautiful masterpiece of history and hope. A true story of our country and it's ability to handle any challenge at any time! One can't help but be positive of the future. Thank you to all.
Thank The Lord our Legend is Back making music that moves the spirit of the people. Everytime I got to Bethel Woods I look at the field and say tell my kids the story of how he was the man to announce the N.Y.S thruway was closed. My children who are all under the age of 20 love this mans music. We really hope to meet and greet and get him to autograph my Alice's restaurant book I got many years ago. He can and will and has inspired generations. PEACE. ✌❤🕉
I had become very cynical and pessimistic over the past few years. Listening and watching this has made me feel like the Grinch when his heart grows three sizes. It has awakened a hope I thought was long dead. Thank you, Arlo & company !
This is not your average happy song. It is a song for the times though. Hopefully, we'll get back to what we normally would be doing - Having a good time making the best of it. The friends who worked on this song are amazing! I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
Just what I needed at this difficult time! *day after the debate* Thank you Arlo! You seem to always say and do something that helps many of us hang onto hope in hard times. Thank you also to all who were involved in this beautiful gift.
brilliant... brought a tear... Arlo you are a national treasure.. congratulations on a awesome and meaningful career, never give up singing and playing and enjoy retirement.
Thank you for sending out this beautiful message to warm our hearts. To remind us that we will get through these hard times as we have before ~ with beautiful music, loving voices, and peace in our hearts...
Gratitude to Arlo, Jim, Vanessa and company for this moving rendition of this song. It has come at exactly the right time. And Arlo, your voice was great - all the emotion is still there. I have to thank you for the decades of concerts that I have attended, taken my kids to and my 12 year old granddaughter has gone to 6 of them - every other year in Keene and once in Brattleboro. Be well.
Beautiful song and music by all. The pictures of earlier days helps us to remember just how hard times were then and how strong all our ancestors were -- persevering through all days and against all odds. May we all show our faith and stand firmly to make it through the problems we have now.
💜🥰❤️ I saw you Arlo, At the University of North Dakota, the Chester Fritz Auditorium. The one and only! The acoustics! Wow! In about 1975 or 1976. I was a student at UND. Amazing, you always are, have been, always will be. Thank you for touching my heart, sharing your talent and your stories. “May God shine his light upon you always and forever”
Beautiful and uplifting - great video David Beeler - truly a classic from classic artists - Arlo, Jim and Vanessa - and Stanley if this bass could talk!!!
Hard Times Stephen Foster Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's pale drooping maiden who toils her life away With a worn out heart, whose better days are over Though her voice it would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more
Beautifully done. Especially perfect w/ the photography. As a person who recalls past lives of oppression in the not too distant past, it occurs to me that slavery is far from over. Now it’s called minimum wage. While the rich get ever richer off the backs of the average Joe, who’s struggling to survive on crappy wages, he often works two jobs. My car insurance just had a massive hike in cost, and it’s crummy coverage w/ Allstate. I asked the agent why? I was told that they lost money in my state, yet online it says they cleared 5.46 BILLION in 2020. More corporate greed for the shareholders. Like the oil industry that are making record profits while people can’t afford to drive their overpriced cars. Enough is never enough, & this corporate greed is everywhere.
My motheer said her father (MY GRANDFATHER) use to sing this when she was a child. My mom is now 93. Thank you so much, Arlo, for doing this.
What a joy and honor to work with Arlo on this adaptation of Foster's classic song. Hope it offers a small measure of solace in these challenging times.
It's terrific. Thanks to all of you for it.

Written by Stephen Foster in 1854 or so.

What a perfect song and rendition for these Hard Times. 150 years old, and still timely.

Note to self. Do not listen to or watch this when you're at work with others around. You'll be fighting back tears the whole time

I love this song!❤
We all go through Our "hard times" in every life.
Thank you Arlo🤗❤🙏
Mercy... So beautiful. "This too shall pass". Trying to stay hopeful and positive in these hard times. So many things need to change.
Thanks to all who played and sang.
Kind of reminds of that oft-repeated verse in the Bible '...and it came to pass.' It never says '... and it came to stay.'

Beautiful, just beautiful. Stephen Foster probably got goosebumps. I sure did.
Sharing his name, I thought I knew every Stephen Foster song, but you found one I had never heard, and now it's my favorite one
I used to play in on a harpsicord in high school in the 60's in Cincinnati.

Hard Times
Stephen Foster
Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears
Oh, hard times, come again no more
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more
While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay
There are frail forms fainting at the door
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh, hard times, come again no more
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more
There's pale drooping maiden who toils her life away
With a worn out heart, whose better days are over
Though her voice it would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day
Oh, hard times, come again no more
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more
Thanks for providing this! I think the 10th line is "there are frail forms fading at the door"
lovely and moving. Thank you!
A classic for the times we find ourselves in. We'll get through it. Thanks for the glimmer of sunlight through the clouds...
