The peace in that song sang by you is mighty and deserves respect. Furthermore you can see how they liked that song and how they felt in to there soul. How they moved how they played and sang is calming and deep. Thank you for that video.
Everything about this is so beautifully performed. The fiddle, the octave mandolin, the guitar and the voice. A tip of the hat to the videographer and lets not forget Mother Nature. About 50 years ago I saw the Stephen Foster show in Bardstown KY. I think he would be so happy to hear this rendition and that 170 years later his songs are still performed and loved.
This is just lovely. I am a living historian for stories and the music of the Civil War and I play this often, as well as the parody the soldiers sang; "Hard Tack..." I do think this is my favorite cover for this - vocals and instruments. TY!
I had a tear in both eyes, and I know not why. Something about it being one of Stephen Foster’s lesser known songs, certainly outside America, and even in this affluent age, it has something to say to mankind.
Just played again as I love this performance...I play & sing on guitar however there are at least four verses & most singers I hear only sing two or maybe three versus....pity as the words are so meaningful.... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
You can feel the sorrow, from the Civil war period. You can feel the pathos. So beautiful. More sorrowful songs come that period, as we can surely understand.
I have heard this old tune many times in my life and this is the most beautiful version that I have ever heard. I am very happy to have found your video.
Thanks for doing the last verse. Folks tend to leave it out. Very lovely rendition. Foster never got the financial recognition he deserved despite his music being sung and loved by everyone.
Love this! James has a beautiful, easy to listen to voice. I thought I was hearing a banjo for a minute, but it’s a long neck mando?? Loved the harmonies. I have loved this song forever; y’all did it justice and beyond!
Absolute perfection! Thank you so much for sharing ! The integration of each party's contribution is truly more than the sum of the parts, including the invasive Canadian thistle with its Scot's reference in the "wild and precious setting"❣️ I will be following each and all of you❤
This song always reminds me of the Famine - an event which would have had an effect on Stephen Foster with his Irish roots - I wonder if this song was influenced by the Famine?
I believe this song/melody comes out of the Civil War times; one can understand why! I read or learned that more soulful, sad songs came from that period than any other time.
Thank you! Some songs do have a lot of verses. Many arrangers like us want to create a great arrangement without going too long or too short. In order to keep the arrangement just right, verses sometimes have to be cut--unfortunately.
This is a stunningly beautiful sung song with the gentlest played guitar and fiddle, I have only one small complaint, The skirt does not suite that man

Beautiful version of this song.
Thank you Kathleen!
Ohhh, it makes me cry...!😭😭😭Beautiful. Love&Peace.💚
Beautiful, I need this for a friend who’s going through hardship
Soldiers in the Civil War made a creative re-write of the lyrics: "hardtack come again no more."
Love this song.I know people are having
hard times at the moment we have lots of Foodbanks find that very sad.
Fantastic rendition
Thank you!!!
I had a tear in both eyes, and I know not why. Something about it being one of Stephen Foster’s lesser known songs, certainly outside America, and even in this affluent age, it has something to say to mankind.
Love it! Love It! Little John duo is inspirational!
Thank you!
Your voice is amazingly crisp. I can hear every word distinctly. Beautiful !
Thank you! James is so smooth!

Best version imho will always remain that one Bobby did for Willie, which eventually led me to this indeed very beautiful rendition…Thanks!
So, so beautiful!!
Thank you!
Thanks for doing the last verse. Folks tend to leave it out. Very lovely rendition. Foster never got the financial recognition he deserved despite his music being sung and loved by everyone.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have known, loved and performed this Stephen Fosrer classic. This is Hans down the best rendition I have heard. Thanks for recording it.
Very pleasant sound!
Thank you!
Wonderful arrangement.
Thank you!
Beautifully presented. The fiddle and the voice stand together but 2 different talents. They accompany but do not compete.
Thank you! It was so fun to arrange
Beautiful. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful song, voice, as well as the rest of the band playing good music. Keep it up!
Thank you SO much!
very beautiful song, love it, thank you
Thank you!
An unusual rendering of this classic, that said, it really works . . . well. I loved it. Thank you.
Thanks!
absolutely beautiful
Thank you!
One of my favorite songs and one of my favorite versions.
Thanks!
he played a phenomenal waltz....something that not every fiddler can do...one of the best ever to play the instrument.
Love this! James has a beautiful, easy to listen to voice. I thought I was hearing a banjo for a minute, but it’s a long neck mando?? Loved the harmonies. I have loved this song forever; y’all did it justice and beyond!
Mandocello.
The instrument in the video is an octave mandolin. There’s also a banjo in the recording too. It’s like a spice added to the recipe.
Does somebody know, where the video was created? Wicklow Mountains (Ireland)?
Greetings grom Germany
Oh, North Utah 🤔.
Un bouzouki irlandais
@@instituteofamericanmusic694 interesting. I thought it was a cittern at first but it only has eight strings, and a cittern has ten.
Thanks for sharing.... such a beautiful song & well presented... cheers from Australia 😀
Thank you!
A lovely, delicate and moving performance. Brings me to tears and joy at the same time. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful voice, beautiful arrangement !

This song always reminds me of the Famine - an event which would have had an effect on Stephen Foster with his Irish roots - I wonder if this song was influenced by the Famine?
Thanks!
Very well done, this is one of the best covers of this song I've heard. I'm subscribing to hear more!
Thank you!
Just lovely.
Beautiful arrangement of this timeless song. Please give a link to hear more of James Mangan vocal renditions.
I wish there was more material out there by James. I will tell him about the many compliments and try to get him on more recordings.
Nice version!!
The slowed down tempo
is dead on! 👍👍🍻
And I just noticed

I really like your arrangement....easily the best out there, and there's quite a few people who have covered it.
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
Sehr schönes Lied.
That was beautiful,
respect from China 🇨🇳

Beautiful version.

I first heard this song on the game, Civilization 6 while playing America. Had to look up other versions on youtube. Great cover!
Thanks!
So glad I found this? Truly beautiful! James, are you married?
hard times come again no more me lleva muy cerca deDios
Beautiful listen to Dolores Keane from.my county Galway lovely rendition
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice treatment. A song from the 1850s for 2022. Sadly no version does all the verses. Too bad.
Thank you! Some songs do have a lot of verses. Many arrangers like us want to create a great arrangement without going too long or too short. In order to keep the arrangement just right, verses sometimes have to be cut--unfortunately.

Beautiful. I would love to hear more James Mangan but can't find him anywhere. Any ideas?
He doesn't have much of a presence online...hopefully we can include him on more!
@@littlejohnduo3543 Please do. I'll makke sure I follow more closely. I love your music.
Play-List Timber!
Very nice cover. Obviously recorded in a studio.
Thanks! yes, we recorded the audio beforehand so it would have good sound quality outdoors.
What brand is the octave mandolin played on this song? Beautiful sound.
It's a Weber. Thank you. We love it!
大好きです✨大好き❤
👍👍👍👍
Most beautiful
Thank you
I think of the American Civil War when I hear this. Is that its origin? Anyone know?
S🎻weet
Thanks!!
Where can I hear more of James Mangan?
I wish I could say that there's more of James out there, but this is one of his very rare recordings.
I think this song is America ! .
..... America have "Thanks giving day" .
A beautiful voice but little heart and soul feeling leaves this song without the depth it should have.
Who cares what you think?
@@bruceb5481 Lol! Sorry Bruce. just my opinion from what I heard.
I'd only known this from Bob Dylan...
Far cry 5 brought me here
This beats Taylor Swift ANY DAY!
Thanks!!!
Nice vocals, but not the best arrangement overall. Check out the 2nd South Carolina String Band. Perhaps the most authentic to Foster's era.
This is a stunningly beautiful sung song with the gentlest played guitar and fiddle, I have only one small complaint, The skirt does not suite that man
i think it suits him just fine.
