This is my favorite song from Bo. I tear up every time I listen to it, including your reaction. I think most people can identify with the chicken. We love our life, but we also have dreams of bigger things. Most of us are afraid to act on those dreams for fear of crashing and burning and our heart hurts when those braver than us make the leap and lose it all. Also, most of us feel really dumb when “why did the chicken cross the road” can make us cry and feel vulnerable.
I think my favorite part of the song is the fact that musically, he makes it unclear if its a happy ending or sad. Since its unclear if the chicken lived or not, when he finishes the song, he doesn’t play the final note, leaving a sense of standing at the edge, waiting for the confirmation of a happy or sad ending. But its left incomplete. The ending is abrupt so the interpretation and be left open.
