So happy to see you doing Bo again! This is one of my favorite Bo songs now. It's just so pretty and ridiculous at the same time. Please do more songs from the Outtakes if you haven't heard them yet. 5 Years also had a video. 1985 & Microwave Popcorn are audio only.

He actually wrote this song several years before the pandemic shutdown and considered using it as the finale of Inside. But yes, I am convinced that Bo intended this as a giant metaphor for existential angst. He is hashtag-deep. He doesn't troll people. He dives very deep and invites/dares people to follow.
Yet there are legitimate jokes in this. The husband's scream, "the chicken is little" (Chicken Little), the "left right left, right left right" mimicing how a chicken actually moves. I seriously never get tired of how deep you analyze Bo's music because there's so much to analyze!

I just realized something. What you said about being cooped up and everything.
When you are young and in your parent or guardian's care, you do what you are told. You follow what they want, sometimes even what they want you to be, and not what you want to be (like a dentist). Then you try and escape and follow your dreams, but at the end they say "You're a joke" and don't support you and now you're stuck in the middle of the road with debt, mental issues, and studies staring you down and running you over. So him saying a lot of people think the chicken (you) dies, and he likes to think the chicken makes it to the other side is just beautiful.

This song reminds me of the ending of La La Land. The chicken likes her life but thinks about how it could be different and acts on it. Different execution but similar theme :)
The way i see this song is that in order to get to a better place in your life or your mental health or whatever, you need to take the scary first step into recovery or whatever, which might be hard and might kill you. But unless you do, you'll spend your life confined to a coop. As a chronic depressive, this song is like a punch in the chest.
It's also a song about the dangers or consequences of chasing your dreams.
Some songs tries for profound. Bo's just is. Now and maybe for 20 to 30 yrs when i die, i'll hear the terrible joke of why did the chicken cross the road and just cry. Ma flew the coop when i was young. I hoped then that she took me with her. Never found out what happened to her. I tried for decades looking for any clue. Nothing.

The song is an allegory it is deep a lot of reactors I've seen do this song and a lot don't fully get it you took a turn towards it but still to many focus on the aspect that it's based on the why the chicken crossed the road your reaction is the right one in my opinion.

I appreciate that you did your best to take the song seriously. While I think that Bo absolutely intended for all those layers to be there, I still think this song was a massive troll on his part. I laughed very, very hard and had to listen a couple more times before I truly processed everything after "must cross".

He's a comedian. Of course he turned a joke into a song lol. That's kind of his thing. Except this time, he didn't write the joke himself.
I think there's a lot of serious things hiding behind the chicken and the road metaphor. Reducing it down to just a joke I think does the song a disservice

In my mental, I believe he is comparing domestic abuse getting worse with quarentine... the chicken cooped up- being more than just a mother and wife. :) Beautiful song
