I remember hearing about this from the documentary on Battlefield and I was like whoa. When I was 6 I was wondering how Sophie survived that. Glad Sophie is still with us. Very friendly to meet.
A truly frightening moment. Sylvester was bang on top of his game here. Unfortunately the cost cutting was always a problem and it showed all over the BBC. Actually doesn't that sound familiar 😂😂. Awesome stuff Adam ❤
Sophie tells this story frequently and It's nice too see actors looking out for one another which is one of the many reasons Ace is better associated with Seven.
It’s been a long time since you’ve done a video on Doctor Who, and boy this was a frightening incident. Sylvester really did save Sophie’s life that day.
I am biased slightly, because my first exposure to doctor who was sylvester mcCoy as the first doctor I ever watched. I saw him when I was five! I do really think sylvester is a really excellent and totally misunderstood and underrated doctor. Always admired him in this role!
Hi love your videos! I know you talk about idents quite a bit but you don't really talk about adverts much. I think it would be fun if you could talk about and maybe review this year's Christmas adverts that come out from the major shops and retailers. It's a tradition for the major British brands to go all out on their Christmas marketing, like how America has special adverts for the Super Bowl. I also think it would be interesting to explore what each advert wants to convey with their messaging and how they view Christmas in general.
as a kid, I just assumed that she was standing behind two plates of glass where the "actual" water was filling up between the glass panes and she was safe behind, just getting a shower. My tv was so low-res and tiny, that i wouldnt have been able to tell differnce.
( I, like many other children - i assume, had to watch on my tiny portable tv in my bedroom as my mum would be watching coronation street downstairs on the "big" tv)
honestly, that would have been smarter to do, but in their eyes take too long and cost too much to do…then again, wrongful death lawsuit payouts would have cost far more!
Well, tbh, TV has changed. More people being able to watch anything, anywhere, anytime… shows that come out week-to-week? Nah, ain’t gonna get that much, nowadays
Oh I heard about this many times on documentaries behind the scenes stuff etc. Good save by McCoy. Wonder if you can take a look at other accidents or incidents from the show. The one that springs in my head is Tom Baker slipping over and breaking his collarbone.
The first accident on a Doctor Who set was during filming of The Dalek Invasion of Earth, when Hartnell, tied to a trolley being pushed down a ramp, received a spinal injury and he had to be written out of the following episode to recover. A drunken actor playing a Yeti in The Abominable Snowdmen on location in Snowdonia fell a hundred feet but escaped serious injury due to the foam insulation of his costume. Elizabeth Sladen almost drowned in an underground pool on location for Revenge of The Cybermen, and was inside the rickety old TARDIS exterior prop when the roof fell in on her during filming for The Seeds of Death.
10:33 This scene was being rehearsed just before recording when the scaffolding collapsed. Baker wasn't wearing the noose, otherwise he might have broken his neck.
Another accident with Sylvester McCoy is at the end of an episode in “The Greatest Show In the Galaxy”. An explosion goes off behind him as he walks towards the camera by the circus tent. They made the explosion a bit too powerful though.
From Vision On to Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy was awesome. I didn't care for Ace but Sophie Aldred was a good actor and children's tv presenter. 'You'll be in a glass tank filling with water...what could go wrong?' I can imagine the director saying!
You have the most recent interviews, but another documentary on dr who has McCoy saying he ran for some wooden steps and yelled “switch off the electricity.” I’ll c if I can find it. It might date from 2000.
New subscriber here. You should do an episode when someone hijacked the tv signal during an episode of doctor who, and maybe one on the Punky Brewster Halloween episode where every kid watching was traumatised 😂😂😂
I was wondering if you were going to mention this after your last video. As a fellow Whovian, I knew you knew about it. Thank Christ Sylvester was paying attention too. Every Whovian has their Doctor and Companion with whom they began a lifetime of adventures on the TARDIS with. Dear old Sylv and Sophie were mine. And imagine, a world without 'Melvin and Maureen's Music-a-Grams' either? Too terrible to contemplate....
Golly, There have been So Many Dreadful Incidents that went on behind the scenes of our favourite TV Programs, One particular story (which I've mentioned on many comment sections) happened earlier in 1989 when the investigative journalist Roger Cook almost drowned in an elephant latrine in Africa whilst filming the opener to Series 3 of The Cook Report, The Story goes that shortly after the team filmed the aftermath of an elephant massacre (where a whole herd had been shot & their tucks hacked off with chainsaws), it got dark so they walked back to base camp, Unfortunately Roger took a wrong turn & slipped into said latrine full of droppings & Mud (which created a quicksand effect) & Roger went up to his armpits in it, Thankfully his life was saved by the Rangers & his team although Roger lost his Trousers, Socks & Boots & he had to get to base camp Barefooted covered in this mess he was in, as he would described during an appearance on the Channel 4 gameshow Countdown in January 2008 "If it had been Filmed, that would have Been on It'll be Alright on the Night over & Over Again!".
I'd only heard of this recently, and didn't know much about it, not being a massive Who person. Indeed, before that I was unfamiliar with Sophie's presence on Who, my only memory of her being in the mid 90s on ITV Saturday morning show WOW alongside Simeon Courtie. It's frightening to imagine a little detail here or there being different and causing disaster in situations like this. I suppose this just served to underline the decline of the original series, such it was considered lame to be into Who and Raquel in Only Fools and Horses having a bit part was portrayed as a humiliation for her, and this was supposed to be a hilarious joke.
Sylvester McCoy SAVED Sophie Aldred's LIFE! There's no higher testament to true friendship than that!
Here here!
He is the Doctor 😊
I’ve done a Q&A about Peter Kay’s BBC Children In Need Medley, made back in 2009.
Amen to that.
I remember hearing about this from the documentary on Battlefield and I was like whoa. When I was 6 I was wondering how Sophie survived that. Glad Sophie is still with us. Very friendly to meet.
She's a real gem for the Whoniverse!
Possibly my first crush 🤭
A key aspect of Sylvester's quick thinking was the blatant shouting of "Shit." It was his way of telling the crew that he was NOT just ad-libbing.
A natural reaction tbph, though also as you say a definite unscripted word!
nice catch there, and it makes his desperate plea stronger as it’s him being extremely concerned about her safety!
he knows that something is wrong with the scene. he should get a bravery medal for his quick thinking.
A truly frightening moment. Sylvester was bang on top of his game here. Unfortunately the cost cutting was always a problem and it showed all over the BBC. Actually doesn't that sound familiar 😂😂. Awesome stuff Adam ❤
The BBC’s track record of a lack of safety continued into the early 1990s with the Bobby Davro incident…
Good video, Adam. Nice to see the updated effects on the Dalek being baseball battered!
I am biased slightly, because my first exposure to doctor who was sylvester mcCoy as the first doctor I ever watched. I saw him when I was five!
I do really think sylvester is a really excellent and totally misunderstood and underrated doctor. Always admired him in this role!
Great that you've covered this. Another reason why Sylvester is awesome.

You should definitely do more videos on situations like this on the Doctor Who set. Very interesting.

That 3.1 million viewing figure looks pretty good considering what the show is getting now.
Well it was up against an England Football World Cup Qualifier on BBC2, Corrie on ITV and Channel 4 News.
Well, tbh, TV has changed. More people being able to watch anything, anywhere, anytime… shows that come out week-to-week? Nah, ain’t gonna get that much, nowadays
In fairness, 3.1 million is much better in 2024 than it was in 1989
Oooh, the time when Sylvester McCoy became himself the hero, rather than his character.........
Oh I heard about this many times on documentaries behind the scenes stuff etc. Good save by McCoy. Wonder if you can take a look at other accidents or incidents from the show. The one that springs in my head is Tom Baker slipping over and breaking his collarbone.
Only problem is that there’s no footage of it, as far as I’m aware. The closest thing is that Terry Walsh had to double for Tom in certain scenes.

Tonight on the next episode of "Adam talks about BBC Health and Safety breaches in the 1980s"
Why are there so many 😭
poor Sophie thank god she's ok
I loved the Sylvester McCoy dr who series. I must give it another watching. Thankyou. 🖖🙂
Another accident with Sylvester McCoy is at the end of an episode in “The Greatest Show In the Galaxy”.
An explosion goes off behind him as he walks towards the camera by the circus tent.
They made the explosion a bit too powerful though.
I had an huge crush on Ace when those shows aired at the time. I think she was my first celeb crush.
9:16: That video's *age-restricted.*
I'm well aware 🫠
With good reason.
honestly, if i seen this on my birthday.. i would say "i need to see more episodes of this"
In that moment Sylvester McCoy REALLY was the Doctor by becoming a hero!
From Vision On to Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy was awesome. I didn't care for Ace but Sophie Aldred was a good actor and children's tv presenter.

The hijacking incident was already covered! Did a video on Television Hijackings some years ago!
@ Ahhhh yes. Watching now 😂 Weird times eh! 😂 Remember seeing that being reported when I came back from school on Newsround I believe…
I still clearly remember watching Battlefield on its original release and being genuinely frightened for Ace in the water tank
The good old days
"When doctor who turned deadly"? Eh? Make it make sense!
Am i the only one wondering how the shot was actually meant to go? Was Ace actually meant to be pulled up from the top orignally?
I wouldn't have thought so.
I am watching this and sharing with a family member who is a doctor who fan. Getting a Dr who education! Thank you.
Where did you find behind the scenes footage? I tried looking on TH-cam.
I was wondering if you were going to mention this after your last video. As a fellow Whovian, I knew you knew about it.

Ace gives me real Dave lister vibes I know she came first
7th doctor saved Ace
Sorcerer?
Artistic licence on the part of continuity.
Not really an institution anymore, don't think it has been for a while.

Ace invented girl power 😂❤
It's almost as if history is repeating itself. Without the rise in show quality (season 1 was not great)
first comment. POGCHAMPION...
Absolute poggers 👌
