bass was the main driving force in the smiths. all their hits the main melody is actually the bass lines. pure genius level melodies, and a great and very individual sound as well.
I disagree, without Marrs Songwriting/Guitar the bass line doesnt make the song at all. However I agree that Rourke was/is a killer bass player and when it comes to bass lines he is my number one favourite bass player ever. In songs like there is a light that never goes out or (obviously) barbarism begins at home the bass was what got me into these as well. But in general its definetly Marrs Songwriting that is the driving force behind the Smiths. I mean its widely accepted that they """invented""" indie/alternative rock and made it Mainstream and well since Marr was the songwriter you just have to give him the credit. And in what hit song is the bass the main melody? The bass is just playing exceptionally high, but that doesnt make it the main melody and most music listeners pay most attention to singing and the general melody. But I completely agree that Rourke is a genius in making bass lines and I personally hum along the bass in like 50% of their songs more than with the guitar, but I still think: A smiths song without Rourkes bass would be missing smth, but Rourkes Bass without Marrs songwriting would be just a cool bass line. Thats obviously not a song or a driving force in the smiths. And rourke wrote that bass lines to the Marrs songs, not the other way around (except for barbarism begins at home lol)
@@hoodoohullabaloo2848 No doubt Johnny had massive skill, but Andy was no slouch and had a diverse musical background, he was more of a Jazz bass player and brought the style to the band, it wasn't all Johnny's music writing. The style and attack was all from Andy. Mike Joyce was probably the most replaceable band member. Morrissey proved that he could continue on successfully without all of them.
@@amlam1999 this is pretty standard actually. In terms of the copyright for a song it's normally spilt 50% for lyrics and 50% for music (normally equally divided). If he only wrote his part then that wouldn't end up amounting to much more in any other band. Still amazing basslines though
Hey BRO - you nailed it !!! - I saw The Smiths 5 times and you did Andy Rourke so proud - Andy is the most under-rated bassist - pure genius - I decided to play the bass in 1980 after I saw The Clash. Paul Simonon was the coolest - Thanks i
We are brothers from another mother. I learned bass because I wanted to be Paul Simonon (saw them live twice). First bass parts I learned were Tina Weymouth (so precise and clever, saw them live twice). Then Pete Farndon (saw them live twice). But the crowning player who opened my eyes and ears and set me on a lifelong obsession was Andy Rourke (saw them live six times). Met Andy once in NYC. Just the sweetest most unassuming man who deserved better from Morrissey. He laid down so many amazing lines, but this bass part I think is the most astounding--how it weaves in and out of the cords and melody with interesting half steps and great use of slides. Just brilliant...and catchy.
weird TH-cam shows me this exactly one day before his initial passing... I still dearly enjoy his parts, I just love how clever and delicate his lines were... rest in peace
And there it is - the Andy Rourke is underrated comment that has to appear on every Smiths bass video as if it was the law. Who are these people who underrate one of the most lauded bass players of all time? It couldn't possibly be you yourself now could it?
@@aspidistraflying4570 O fato é que quase ninguém lembra do Andy Rourke. A maioria das pessoas só lembram do Morrissey e do Johnny Marr. Isso é subestimar o cara, qualquer um entende isso.

Morrissy and Jonny Marr always got the accolade, but it is the bass that drives their songs... just proves that the singer and guitarist get all the plaudits 😡 when it's the rhythm section that drives the song. Grew up with the Smiths and only now realised how good the bassist was.. RIP Andy Rourke 😢
Rourke was someone whom I am guilty of overlooking during the time he was alive, and am unfortunately now only seeing how great he was in the wake of his untimely death. He's fucking brilliant, reminds me of Adam Clayton and Duff Mckagan a little bit. Very melodic.
Andy Rourke was so clever....great bass player.....take out the guitar.....andy follows the vocal...and that's the game changer.......the guitar is a distraction.....brilliant player......and brilliantly covered m8.

The bass in the smiths is always something that I loved, pisses me off how Morrissey could never see it was one of their strengths
The fact that the bass player only got 10% of their earnings still irritates me to this day.
lars Olofsson mostly because Johnny and Steven took all the interviews and interacted with fans - however I do agree it was very unfair
Because Morrissey is the biggest twat alive, come on now.

Ben Mercer In fairness, Johnny marr wrote quite a few of the bass lines, on top of his guitar riffs and doing interviews
This is the hardest and most rewarding bass line I've learnt to date. Thanks for a great video
Excellent playing! Andy Rourke is one killer bass player. Real innovative stuff and this is right up there with the rest of his work!
The sophistication of this song is off the charts
my favorite bass line by Andy. Rest in power!!
Holy crap, beautiful tone and amazing playing. One of the coolest bass songs ever.
R.I.P. Andy Rourke . . . We'll never forget you and your basslines. Congrats CS, I learned to play this song because of your video.

I've been trying to learn this. In the intro going from than 7th fret on the G string to 2nd fret on the E string with your index finger is so hard!
Tune your e to f# then you can just hit it open

Rourke was a genius. Has to be in top 3 ever no? He could have been less busy and still sounded great but he went for art.
