    Tips And Comments:
    - Playing Technique: Played next to the bridge with middle through high strength. Bridge pickup at full tone
    - Gear Sound: Added some treble and a bit of bass, compression added to control the slapping parts
    - About The Song: Nice song to play along, some difficulties are evident. The (x) means the mute sound of hitting the strings against the bass, you can just avoid it if you want. Ghost notes in this case are very important, practice slow! Transcribed from studio version with help of live videos and isolated bass track

I'm a metal bass player that uses a pick, but never really felt like a true bass player. I've decided to try and branch out and learn stuff from styles I've never played before. I foolishly decided to start here. Not only am I struggling with the finger style, the ghost notes just leave me confused. However, I'll keep going and hopefully crack this over the next few weeks. If I do, I think it will be the start of a new chapter in my playing and allow me to feel more like a bass player.

@@GavinSideways I personally prefer the tone I get when using a pick for my original stuff, even if that's against what some bass snobs will admit! Though I still think it's important to try other styles to improve overall abilities on bass and become more versatile.
With a pick it's all about alterative picking, once you've got that down, you'll be fine. Get a metronome out and practise doing 16ths at 60bpm and build up to around 140bpm. Keep the accent heavy on the beat and you'll start to feel it. Look up Cody Wright Pick Lesson, it's really useful!

80s production killed a lot of the bass lines and guitars, drums sound awful on everything, definitely a step back in production quality with the step forward in technology .. imagine these tunes recorded ten years earlier?.. recent live shows represent the bands actual sound much better. There is a video of John showing you how to play it. It's not that difficult from the standpoint its just a bunch of octave jumps and standard bass riffs. You're correct in that the staying in time is the hard part. This song is moving along quickly and staying with it can be tough. Interestingly enough I have more trouble playing straight eighth notes for extended times than anything that moves like this. The repetition over several minutes will start messing me up at higher tempos.

Rio is about ready to be put together & added into our set list. To date this has been the most challenging bass line I have ever attempted. Almost gave up at one point. I slowed the video down to 75% of normal speed and worked & worked on it. Once I got the muscle memory I gradually increased the video speed till I could play the bass line at normal speed. With full time work, grandparent duty, and just life in general it took me little over a month working on it three or four times a week a few hours at a time. Its one of those songs I had to walk a way from sometimes, then come back to try again.
Now just to perfect the high harmonies without tripping on the ghost notes in bass line. : )
I give you major KUDOS CoverSolutions. Not only can your bass be heard in the mix , your skillset on bass is so freaken badass. Thank you for putting this cover video out.

I'll probably get grief for this but this bass line goes down as one of the best bass lines of the 80's & thats saying something when you consider the bass guitar has definitely moved from being in the background to almost being the focal instrument & just as important as the lead guitarist role of backing the singer within the song...
One of my all time favourites is the late great Mick Karn from Japan/Solo Work/JBK & many more...
I've never heard a bass played the way he did & how he approached his style of playing and I'm guessing his Greek upbringing & musical sounds he was exposed to helped him to create his own unique sound & style on the fretless bass guitar... RIP Mick Karn
Another great bassist to serve in aiding the vocalists (again on fretless) was the beautiful melodic playing of Pino Palladino on the MusicMan Stingray Fretless Bass Guitar in his early session/sideman years & how he question & answered Paul Youngs vocals is still beautiful to hear to this very day...
Mark King of Level 42 was another & took the concept of playing the drums on bass & at times doesn't get the respect he deserves for the finger style playing he also does...
My list of Bassist's from all over the world is endless & my initial love of this instrument was evident early on in my life without my ever really realising it with the amazing & versatile Female Pioneering Bassist " Carol Kaye " from the " Wrecking Crew " team of master player's playing on all those hits songs I'd sing along to as a kid growing up in the early 70s onwards...
That woman has literally played on Thousands of Hit Song's from artists far & wide & though I wanted to play Drums or the Lead Guitar I soon found I didn't need much convincing from my friend to play electric bass guitar instead as something inside me just clicked with this instrument & it's a love affair that's stayed with me all through my life...
I love the big string & horn elements of music from the masters of modern popular orchestral arrangements like John Barry/Lalo Schifrin to Ennio Morricone but it's not these people who get you up on the dance floor, it's the Rythmn Section of a good band who had great players like Bernard Edwards & Tony Thompson/John Taylor & Roger Taylor/John Deacon & Roger Taylor/Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr et al
I could go on & on & I will state without embarrassment that for the record the bass guitar is one hell of a sexy instrument to play & listen to ...
It's the foundation of a good Rythmn Section within a band environment that'll drive those songs along & therefore you onto the dance floor...
Its certainly the case that with the electric bass guitar/in the right hands " less can truly be more "
The Rio bass line like the Rio Album Cover Art has become a part of popular artistic culture & there was a time that we thought this would never end & though via the help of internet artist's have more control but the downside is the amount of act's...
Were as before you literally had hundreds upon hundreds/even thousands of solo act's/duo's & band's through all the decades of brilliant solo act's or band's that were fortunate to be signed to the many other one's that were not fortunate enough to be signed & though the music was still brilliant back then I feel it's taken on its own appreciation with fan's who (even more) now realise that those heady days are over...
Enjoy what you have & never let anyone tell you that you can't...
    .....

I feel you completely, Joe Osborn is another great along with Carol. Mick Karn on Bill Nelson's Tender is the Night one of my favorite most moving basslines of all time. Derek Forbes on the entirety of New Gold Dream, and John Taylor's work especially on Rio is fantastic. The bass work on ABC's Lexicon of Love is great too, (Mark Lickley and Brad Lang) You can tell he was influenced by Bernard Edwards I think though their styles and obviously music is fairly different. I've recently been trying to learn a lot of Rutger Gunnarsson's bass lines and Bernard Edward's line. I keep hoping CoverSolutions will do Sister Sledge Thinking of You because I truly want to learn that line and there aren't any tabs on youtube I can find. I'll have to look into Mark King further.
Crap gotta give a nod to Nick Beggs too though I'm not a Kaja Goo Goo fan.

Seriously, they didn't even recognise or know who she was!..
I'll look into that though the Wrecking Crew at times had a few studios spread around in places like New York/LA/Nashville/Memphis/Detroit & Muscle Shoals...
Who ever didn't recognise her must have been from a different generation but in saying that if the studio was still up & running then there's no excuse for that...
I'm not a big fan of using the plectrum on my bass guitar's but for some reason I always loved when Carol Kaye used it & would mute the strings if need be...
That woman was a trailer blazer & at first got hit with the usual sexist remarks from fellow Wrecking Crew members & I loved how she just said that she knew how to swear as much as them & gave them a mouthful when she felt like it but that soon changed as she proved to be up there with any male player in the Wrecking Crew...
It's ironically funny that all the musician's in the Wrecking Crew didn't actually believe that pop music wouldn't last that long ,10 years max, & was yet another disposable throw away style yet those were their glory years & they were always kept very busy working on many genres of music/solo acts & bands...

Great Bass player.. great sounding Bass...
I play with plec... and have learned or fine tuned some songs watching you with the help from the tabs...
Rio is a fab tune.. and never thought I would or could play it... but again.. after watching you and with the tabs I've managed it .. Need to practice more .. ( granted I've no idea with ghost notes ). But keep up the good work 👍
