I spent my day working on a waterfall coffe table im building for a friend. I only have hobby tools, nothing proffesional, but it works. I called it a day and sat down with a beer, and this video was recommended, and my god! This whole video, the bench itself, the editing, the music. This is the best 15 minutes ive spend on TH-cam in quite a while!! just WOW! Liked and subscribed for sure!
I started my woodworking journey with contractor grade tools as well. They absolutely work. Little by little, you upgrade them as needed... my future tool list is an abyss. I still don't have a drill press... I use my mortiser with extensions/adapters HA! THANK YOU for the generous compliments!
I think I have a new woodwork hero! Your skills are sky high, but I like how you take the time to show the jointing beforehand and then the smoothing with hand planes along the way. This facet of the craft is obviously central for you. You are telling us preparation IS everything. Honestly one of the very best TH-cam woodworking videos I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot! Don't get me started on the music..., I'd be here all day. Rapt!! And the video production...
There are parts, the stretcher for example, that must be hand planed before assembly because it would be impossible to do so after the glue-up. I would have hand plane finished the entire piece (no sanding) but for the through tenons making it impossible to properly plane that portion without seeing the plane marks... hence the sanding that had to occur. A keen eye will notice a difference in sheen between the stretcher and the rest of the bench. Thank you for all your compliments.... very much appreciated!
Stunning bench and workmanship! My friend asked me if I could build him a new dining table, with two benches to match, so I'm currently looking for some inspiration and I found this video. This is the style of bench I would like to build.
A table with a set of benches in this style would be beautiful. The benches would be great to match with any length table due to the style of stretchers... the bench is incredibly strong. Enjoy your project and let me know if you have any questions concerning the construction of the bench. Thank you for your comment!
Amazing! The bench, of course, but also everything else too. The music, the lighting, the shot selection. Such a beautiful video front to back. Thank you so much for this!
This is a masterpiece of design, artistry, craftsmanship, and videography. Even your table saw sled is stunning. I’m now going to take my seat in the non-achievers section and anxiously wait for you to post more videos. This was a treat.
I was just about to write a message in Hungarian to praise that finally someone uploaded a high quality video of a carpentry work/art from my home country. It seems you/your ancestors find their new home in Texas USA. This was a great video thanks for uploading @TokolyWoodwork
Ur chisels are crazy sharp man. I'm only beginning to use Hand tools and enjoying it very much now. I love hand plaining timber from rough to smooth. It's a nice feeling to see it come good the way it works.
Beautiful! THanks for sharing. I loved your work and videography. I also enjoyed the music without commentary. Very well done, looking forward to seeing your future videos!
@@TokolyWoodwork Looking forward to seeing your desk. I really enjoy detailed joinery and across the spectrum of hybrid woodworkers I lean towards the handtool side, while certainly valuing the use of machine assistance. Thanks again for all that goes into sharing your talents with us.
Forgot to ask, how long did you dry the wood for? They are pretty thick I would think it would take a while. We’re they kiln dried before you bought them ?
I purchase all my lumber kiln dried. That being said, I still let it acclimate in my shop for at least three months before milling. My shop is kept at 45% humidity during humid months but will gets much dryer in summer /winter. So, I still have to be careful how fast / much material I remove during each round of the milling process.... a 1/16" each side is safe (after I square the lumber first round on the jointer).
I know you only have 2 videos uploaded so far, but the quality of work you’re pushing out, be it the woodworking and videography is top tier and deserving of far more views and subscribers than you have. Keep up the phenomenal work man! I’m excited to see more!
Thank you very much! I'm finishing up the final detail of the legs/frame/rails/styles phase of the Lewis Desk. I'll have a new video up next week! Thanks again!
Hand tools are always a work in progress! I'm convinced that the better you are at sharpening hand tools, the better you magically get at using them. I still have a long way to go though... someday I'll own a set of the diamond wheels! Thank you for your very generous compliment!

Thank you! All the songs are by Chris Shards. I agree, his music plays well with the tools! The bench is made from walnut with padauk dovetail wedges (aka tusk tenons).
gorgeous bench. i’m very new to this…can only hope to make something half as good someday. could i ask what you were using to sharpen your plane’s blade?
Thank you! I use a Tormek T8 sharpening system. I go back and forth between it and more traditional wet stones.... just depends on what I'm sharpening and how frequent I need to sharpen during the day. The Tormek shines for repeated blade angles and having to sharpen 6-7 times a day. Concerning you being able to build a bench like this..... of course you can!... it just takes planning and, of course, practice (I still cut practice joints before operating on the actual piece for furniture). It's like the late Larry Haun used to say "Complicated projects are made up of simple steps."
Beautiful piece. Can you share some info on how you finished the wood? It looks like you used tung oil and no stain; how many coats? What's your preferred type of tung oil?
I use pure clear tung oil and citrus solvent from Real Milk Paint Company. I clean the piece with citrus solvent then first coat with 75% tung oil / 25% citrus solvent mixed... wipe clean after about 30 min. The next day, I reapply with 100% tung oil... wipe clean after about 30 min. Let cure for a full 30 days (tung oil has a longer cure time compared with linseed oil). After a full cure, I wax with clear Mylands hard wax and buff 5 minutes or so later until it develops a satin-glossy like finish. If you want a darker finish, you can get "dark" tung oil and as well as different colors of Mylands. I usually use clear though as walnut can get too dark really quick. Thank you for your comment!
