    As someone with over 35 years experience working as a designer in mechanical engineering as well as being a machinist, and possessing some welding skills, I recognize a knowledgeable professional when I hear one and Rick seems to be just that.

    Cool video. Thanks for the upload. Exactly what I need done. I was wondering if this was possible and still be able to afford. For someone to do a good enough job, so that it looks factory and passes an inspection must take some time and cost a fair amount of money. How much does the repair in this video cost?

    I'm no expert - and I've never welded a thing. But my guess is, they wire brushed all the old rust off of the original frame before welding the patch, and then rustproof painted the whole repair. But that's just my guess. I believe he even said they would do so in the video.

      He didn't answer but that's what I did, unhook the battery before you weld on it.
      I found another truck frame very similar to my f350 that was still in good shape and cut pieces out of that for the steel stock. I cut out every comprised or thin area, grinded the surrounding metal really clean, held the new metal up and traced/cut out my pattern.
      I have a DC mig/Tig/stick welder and I used my mig to tack it in, then 6010 for the root weld, then 7018 over the 6010, 3/32 at around 70-80 amps worked good. I probably could have just mig welded the whole thing. Try not to weld big long continuous beads, I welded little 2in passes and hopped around so I didn't overheat the existing metal. Apparently some frames are a higher carbon heat treated steel and can crack or fail if heated too much. 🤷
      Good luck hope this helps someone.
      ALSO MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE TO SUPPORT YOUR FRAME IN MULTIPLE AREAS BEFORE CUTTING PIECES OUT. This is critical, I jacked mine until everything was straight and factory looking again, then replaced pieces. (Jack's on both sides of the crack)

    I am sorry. For the most part it looks like you great work, this would be a great commercial for your business. But this is TH-cam and I live in Wisconsin and was looking for a more detailed walk through of the welding process. Did you have to cut out the entire peice you were replacing? Did you have to remove anything for safety reasons to accomplish the weld? Would you need to support both sides of the structure at the where you were doing the cut out and welding to maintain or realignment of the frame for the welding?

    • @connormason7907

    • @SlickArmor
      @SlickArmor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just disconnect the battery to be safe and keep the neg cable of the welder close to where you are welding so as not to send current through areas that can be cooked.

      This weld on patch will cause more moisture to be trapped in that area and speed up the rusting on the original frame as well as the patch.

You better learn the importance of proper fit-up, joint preparation, the importance of good joint penetration, and a lot more that the average hack takes for granted.
