  • Some people say that the tone is all in the guitar. Others say it's in the fingers, or the pickups. Let's put it to the test and see if you can hear the difference in this 13 guitar song. All guitars were tracked using the same amp and signal chain.

      Ellie Smith You don't know how bad the youtube compression is on some files.. i had a song get like a 2,5dB boost in the 400hz area when i uploaded it to youtube...

      +JoeyRockerTV audio compression and data compression are two different things

    • @Yohahn
      @Yohahn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dareios soieraD yes but youtube usually compresses audio. Because if you upload a track like my latest one. It sound quite different from the wav file the wav file and the mp4 have more mids and not as much 50-70hz thump. Also the video editing software usually compresses the audio on the master stereo out. Just wanted to add that usually services try to compress the audio file so that the level will be better matched. If you upload to spotify or itunes they compresses it so that one song isn't that much louder then the next one so if you have one playlist you don't need to change the volume all the time.

      I wouldn't be so sure about that. The Lace Sensors that are in that strat are essentially single coils that have special shielding. Also, P-90's work great for metal, mainly due to their larger inductance, which makes a darker sound.

    I'm hearing only the tiniest differences, myself. Maybe it's because many of these guitars are built with similar standards in mind.
    I have six 1960s Japanese guitars, and they all sound _very_ different with the same amp settings... not to say that they're necessarily better, but they were made very differently then.

    what's funny is, people always say the tone is in the wood, or in the pickups, or in the fingers... there are 3 major factors I wanna mention that people never care about : string tension, pickup location (aka the scale length of the guitar) and of course, the major element in the signal chain everyone always forgets about, THE AMPLIFIER.

    • @elguitarTom
      @elguitarTom 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thewonderfulMRnoob Maple, mahogany, valnut. Doesn't matter. Tone is all in the strings --> pickup --> amp

    • @thewonderfulMRnoob
      @thewonderfulMRnoob 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      elguitarTom No.

    • @luisrocha26
      @luisrocha26 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      elguitarTom I would disagree with you, although I definitely think that pickups and amps play a bigger role in tone definition than the wood. I think the density of the wood influences how the string will lose energy and therefore affects sustain and the range of harmonics.

      MyPenguinsFly They are called mini humbuckers. They make a humbucker, but in the size of a single.
      I put a seymore duncan mini hum in the bridge of my strat a while back. Its not quite as full as a real hum, but better than a single coil.

    They all sounded absolutely THE SAME, I've been a guitar player for 13 years, this gotta be fake or overproduced until making them all sound the same like some other folk said in here.
    P.S. These guys definitely have a shitload of money for having so much gear and such badass studios lol

      I dont think so, i can clearly hear the difference between the pickups using $40 sennheiser headphones. I was surprised by the single coil pickup in the last guitar, it sounded like a humbucker to me :D

    • @RunawayThumbtack
      @RunawayThumbtack 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rockboy360 Nah, they sound different. Not very different, but still unmistakeably so even on 360p.
      The 50 Cal is a bit of a strange-sounding amp, though, so it's not exactly the tonal platform on which you might be more used to listening. It's certainly easier to hear differences when you're listening to something familiar as a baseline.

      rockboy360 Whoops, just realized he was using the Generator. My bad.
      I guess he just likes that sound then, huh? :) That, or maybe it's the cab/mics...

    Every true musician knows that tone is dependent solely upon the person playing.

    Not trying to be an asshole, this is just an opinion just like everyone else has. Is this video trying to show how overproduced tracks make all guitars sound the same or how boring metal has become?

    • @enin_music
      @enin_music 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Chamberlain Well it's like Jared said, for your own interpretation, because all of us have different ears and different forms of hearing, to me I can hear the difference in each guitar for example, some had depth in bass and the agile had a more deeper tone

    • @MrCaedoTV
      @MrCaedoTV 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I could most times hear a difference, sometimes it was really hard to tell.. but you know that the difference would be huge when the sound was not as distorted and "changed" overall. I know my guitar by their sound, when plugged in to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Marshall Plexi. But through an ENGL for example...nope
      (Rob Chapmans Blindfold-Challenges and his "proof that guitar wood affects tone" are also great videos to really hear the differences between guitar, even if it's just the Gibson LP standard or studio version)

    My favorite sounding guitar is the Ben Weinmann sig w/EMG 57 but I really love how balanced the fastback beardcomber pickup sounds : it almost goes counter way to the actual trend of hi-gain pickups, it has snarl and attack but doesn't seem to have the usual 1k mid boost that makes everything go ..."djent".. Thanks for the video !
