    I know this video is a few years old, but the results were really amazing to me. Thank you for doing this, it has opened my eyes about several things. The results on both blades were stunning, how well a sharp quality blade cuts is devastating.
    Thank you.

    I always think of this video when looking at serrated edges. The shock and awe on your face after the cut is priceless. I'm thinking of getting a Talwar soon and prefer the look of plain edged knives for the most part (though I love the serrated Vaquero!), but watching this again has me thinking of getting the serrated.

    Don't worry about the serrated being hard to sharpen. By the time you chop up enough people to dull it, the Cops will have found you by then.

    Very good review Hissatsu! For this 5.5 inch blade, serrations are definitely much more devastating than a plain edge version. Some kept whining about how hard it is to sharpen the serrations! The sole purpose of this blade is for a last ditch self defense rather than utility use! ..,,

    One big disadvantage to Cold Steel's serrations are that they take forever to sharpen. And AUS 8A will go dull relatively quickly. So unless you know how to sharpen serrations properly and have a lot of free time on your hands to do so. The plain edge is probably the best way to go.

    • @Hissatsu5
      @Hissatsu5  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just get a Spyderco sharp maker it's the best thing for serrations I can get them hair shaveling sharp

    • @keithgilbert100
      @keithgilbert100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hissatsu5 I've kind of moved beyond sharpening stones these days. I bought a Kalamazoo 1SM 1x42 and belts from 200 grit on up to a leather belt with 1/4 micron diamond paste. Although I free hand now and then to maintain my skill (For when the zombies come and there is no power LOL). Being able to get a hair popping edge from a bone dull blade in 2 minutes has ruined me for that kind of time intensive sharpening anymore LOL.
      Cold Steel has some nasty serrations for sure. But they're too high maintenance for me. Great test though. The reason I found this video is because I'm about to get a 5.5" Talwar plain edge. So I appreciate the illustration.

    • @FimmyV

      @FimmyV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And I assume it would depend on the blade shape too. Like, I wouldn't think a sweeping persian type of shape such as this would have that much issue with serrations catching, but something like a Spyderco Civilian for example seems like it might be able to bunch up clothing material in a problematic way...

    In my opinion a man should have at least 2 knives on him at all times, one for regular edc tasks, and one if the need ever presents itself for self defense

  • @CliffStamp
    @CliffStamp 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    It might be interesting to look at different finishes on the plain edge as well as to set the angle of the scratch pattern on the more coarse finishes to best suit the cutting. In particular if you are snap or draw cutting where the blade moves backwards (you pull the blade towards you) then the angle of the scratch pattern should be on a 45 so that the teeth have a rake angle similar to a pull cut japanese saw.

    I really like my Voyager Vaquero XL in serrated form, although I don't think of it as a good utility knife. Nonetheless if there's ever a SHTF moment, the Vaquero would be in my sweaty little fist.
    For utility use a Voyager medium clip point (plain edge) sits in the left front pocket.

    80% of the early Spyderco Police Models were produced with Spyderedge (serrations) There’s a good reason that was the case. Serrations aren’t “cool” in today’s “tactical folder” world. But if you want a hell of a practical and tactical EDC Knife, get a Spyderco Shaman with Spyderedge serrations. There are plenty available and often at a discount to straight edge

    Not sure any of you have a clue about the practical purposes of plain edge vs serrated blades. Of course the serrated blades always work better when cutting through coarse material, that's the entire purpose of a serrated blade. It tears, not cuts, through man made materials like denim, nylon, etc. That isn't the function of a plain edge blade. Have any of you ever held or used a knife outside the damn kitchen?

    • @Hissatsu5
      @Hissatsu5  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @adamgolden4083
      @adamgolden4083 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was directed at most of the people commenting below, not directed at you. While serrations can be very share, they are simply no replacement for plain edge. Every blade type has their purpose, there is no one size fits all, and knowing the function of each is how to properly choose your EDC. These yahoos are running off and buying a serrated based on this video, lol.
