A Walk Around Chartwell, Kent, England

  • Chartwell was the principal adult home of Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill and his wife Clementine bought the property, located two miles south of Westerham, Kent, England, in 1922. Extensive renovations simplifying and modernising the home were undertaken directly, completely transforming it when complete.
When it became clear to the Churchills in 1946 that they could not afford to run the property, a consortium of wealthy businessmen organised by Lord Camrose purchased the estate. The arrangement was that for payment of nominal rent both Sir Winston and Lady Churchill would have the right to live there until they both died, at which point the property would be presented to the National Trust. When Sir Winston died in 1965, Clementine decided to present Chartwell to the National Trust immediately.
The house has been preserved as it would have looked when Churchill owned it. Rooms are carefully decorated with memorabilia and gifts, the original furniture and books, as well as honours and medals that Churchill received. The house is Grade I listed for historical reasons. The gardens are listed Grade II.
The property is currently under the administration of the National Trust. Chartwell was bought by a group of Churchill's friends in 1946, with the Churchills paying a nominal rent, but was not open to the public until it was presented to the nation in 1966, one year after Churchill's death.

Relative to some other countries in the world I never cease to be glad of the freedoms that I possess. These are in no small part because of this greatest Englishman and how a country that stood alone then rallied others to defeat German fascism. An awe inspiring film. Thank you.

Beautiful evocation of all we owe Churchill and the brave men and women of Britain and western democracies in crushing fascism and totalitarianism. Chartwell was WSC's well of strength and inspiration and through your video, I feel I've been there too. Thank you!!

Thank you for making this video - listening to the timeless words of the Great Man serves to remind us how fortunate we were that he was there ready to serve - and inspire - at the hour of the country's greatest need.

I have been fortunate enough to visit this treasure and walk in the footsteps of a giant. The view of the Kentish countryside from the front veranda must have inspired some of his most memorable speeches. Here is a perfect blend of man and native soil that heartened British resolve and saw a nation through a terrible time in history. Awesome does not begin to cover it.

While I will never be able to afford to get to Chartwell in my lifetime, if I were to pass away and die, and the good Lord condemned me to walk this good earth for a time, I would just ask one thing. Please, sire, let me walk Chartwell.
Thank you so very much for such an interesting video tour of the man's favorite place! The man for whom I named one of my sons. The man who beat Hitler and his Nazi thugs! The man who warned of the "Iron Curtain." Yet, no one would listen.

Thank you. I am deeply moved by this. Churchill was a childhood hero of mine. I have read extensively on his life, his politics, and his history. The world, and especially Great Britain, owes much to his man. There has rarely been a time where one man made such difference in the world! When I teaching, I used Sir Winton's "A History of the English Speaking People" a mandatory book for my Masters and Doctoral Students. They loved the book with only one exception, and he did not make the grade.
Thank you for doing this work!!! It was most excellent and shows Chartwell in a light that Winston, in my opinion, would have been proud to have seen!
Question for you. You made a statement that the house is listed as a "Grade 1" and the gardens were listed as a "Grade 2." Does this have something to do with the National Trust grading of the dwellings? I am curious as to this. Also, do you live close to the house?
Thank you in advance for your kind consideration! God bless!

Prof2You Smithe I don't know where you live but if you can you do have to visit Chartwell it's a fabulous place to see and walk around I'm not sure if your aware but there is a room in Chartwell itself that holds an easel all around it are paintings all over the walls. These Paintings were actually created by Churchill himself so you can see some of that great man's interpretations in his art

Very nice presentation, the music overwhelmed Churchill voice at times and I couldn't hear what he was saying which rather spoiled it.
What a beautiful house and gardens, fitting indeed to the greatest Englishman of modern times, he deserved to live there, nowhere else would have sufficed for one of his stature, Chartwell House was his destiny too.... God built it for him.
I highly recommend the film "The Gathering Storm" with Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave as a fitting tribute, the best in my opinion of all the films made on Churchill, the acting and locations are superb, the likeness uncanny,it was actual filmed at Chartwell inside and out.
    Thanks Pug.

Is this the voice of the hired actor pretending to be Churchill on the radio? Churchill was too drunk to make the actual addresses.
