This song is for me the Big Bang of peace. I had it in my earphones at the hospital while being close to death, though fully conscious and fighting cancer before a transplant saved me. King Crimson's Islands was telling me 'any way this will end it will be fantastic'.
"Always has been." We are all little connected islands, sharing the birds and winds with each other while trying to make sense of this fantastic experience that is life itself. It is a rare thing to be aware of, how small and fast our time here is, and how it makes all our life even more amazing because of it. I cherish you. Because you know this better\closer than a lot of people. You have known what it is to accept your end, to really know every day is a gift. Not in the sense that you can always do more each higher, but in the sense that every small gesture is beautiful in its significance (personally, I've always believed the greatest, divine good is hidden in the smallest gesture of kindness, and it always puts a smile on my face), that the fact that every interaction could be your last and as such should be done as if it were, and that at the end, you are your own judge, and as long as you've lived true to yourself and your loves, you will forgive and accept your end (no one is clear of guilts and regrets., but that is\was part of the journey that is human life, it is about learning after all).
This is one of the most beatuiful songs I've ever listened. And I had the privilege of watching it be played live. This song made the world a better place.
Mark Charigs cornet solo makes me cry (from 6:05 to 8:55) ... It draws a distinct story in my head; a person, who lived a sad and lonely life, finds true love in the autumn of their life, which makes them happy and full of joy. But there's great tragedy in this, because their life is damn near over, and it took them so long to realize the beauty of it - but in the moment, the fact is lost on them, or they just don't care. And when they die, there is a smile on their face, because they have lived a great life.
Ha ha reaper man. Mr Tippett came to our house after a gig at Oxford improvisers co-op mid-80s. He talked to my housemate about eastenders as I remember
Been listening to this cut since I owned this album since 1972 or '73. I got it on sale at JL Marsh record warehouse in Dallas where I worked a short time.
Fripp turns his gaze towards the Trifid Nebula of Sagittarius, and recalls that story he read in his youth, about some monks who in their monastery observed, one night a thousand years ago, how particles were released from the moon that originated new stars in the sky. Evokes the metaphor of stars, islands scattered across the sky, and gives name to the fourth King Crimson album.
Thank you for everything Pete this song has gotten me through so much

Fifty years have passed since the creation of this song (1971) and which I heard for the first time when I was sixteen in 1975, at the premises of the mythical record store “Showco”, which was in one of the commercial galleries in Buenos Aires in the Belgrano neighborhood. His owner, Juanjo Fernández Padrón, was always there with several of his friends listening to “strange things” that came on vinyl from Europe, Japan and the US. There, I also heard for the first time Peter Hamill's Van der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Premiata Forneria Marconi, and Pink Floyd. But it was King Crimson who blew my mind. The lyrics of the poet Peter Sinfield, the incredible guitar of Robert Fripp and the melodies and voice of John Wetton, made something change in me forever. Because not only had he discovered music, he had also discovered poetry. Happy 50 years, Islands! And thank you.

Although many may prefer "Starless" when it comes to holding the claim of KC's most beautiful song I, for one, believe "Islands" walks with that honor. Sublime to its core and deeply moving a song that succeeds on every level, not an easy thing to do. Too, Pete Sinfield's lyrics are worthy of being singled out, rich with allusion, imagery, and alliteration they are close to very best he achieved in his collaboration with Fripp (and that's saying something in light of his overall brilliance). Breathtaking. Cheers!
Yes, I just replied to a post above and agree with your judgement of Peter Sinfield's poetry, I believe he will come to be recognised as one of the greatest lyricists/poet of his time. Maybe he should come out of semi retirement and write a paean for the best of the 1970's/80's in contrast to our present social-cultural collapse!
@@gordonbryce I was able to know, many years ago, that Peter Sinfield was mentioned in the 70s as one of the two best lyricists of Rock, along with...Jim Morrison.
@@carlosaramayo7633 Peter Sinfield draws from the very best of British romantic poetry going all the way back to William Wordsworth and William Blake and, in my opinion, transcends them both at times because he mixes in his clever perceptions of the late 20th century. What is sad is so much of British radio is vapid and our music scene lacks depth and real musicianship now, when compared to the sublimest moments of prog. rock. Ah! Things come and go. The way of life!
And this would turn out to be the last collaboration between Peter Sinfield and Robert Fripp, who fired him after this project. Richard Palmer James would be Crimson's next lyricist during the John Wetton years.
I’ve only recently explored their works beyond Court of the Crimson king album and I still can’t get over how they have beautiful quiet pieces and what I assume death metal sounds like as well as something posted today which sounds like straight Jazz.

Such a beautiful song, loved the album…thanks for the cornet playing. The end of the song had some incredible deep bass as the musicians shuffled around. My father thought I was knocking down a wall in my room. I had built a subwoofer w 15 inch speaker…the rumbling scared me too; but after such a beautiful song, my fathers aggression upsets me to this day.
It's been so many years I heard this mesmerising piece of music over the radio on a late summer evening in 1972. Poland in the middle of communist rule with no perspective of seeing the world and feeling free... And Oh, this music that takes you to another world where there is no persecution and bans but pure permeating beauty. Those were the days and ... King Crimson - the hope for peace and beauty to come some day!
One of the most beautiful things I've ever had the pleasure of listening. To say it's angelic seems lacking. It gives me such a strange feeling...like miracles exist, like things will be OK.

I first heard this as a very young man, on a hot night in australia when it was first released. It opened my eyes to music beyond the traditional rock of zeppelin and deep purple. I have asked my wife to play this at my funeral . To me it is all about the lonelyness of us all , but being at peace with our isolation.Peter Sinfield wrote the most powerful lyrics, and fripps ability to let musicians shine around him, such wonder.
Peter Sinfield has passed away, a loss to anyone who appreciates intelligent, moving, and poetic lyrics. An enormous influence on myself as a writer. Sail on Peter, sail on . . . Cheers!
Hypnotic, metaphysical, enveloping, persuasive but deep...a monster amongst the monster tracks, made by monster musicians.....Art at its best,Boz Burrell was a Platonic monad, one of the best voices of story of the rock,Fripp'mellotron is devasting like the trumpet solo by Charig....superb and awesome the works by pianist Tippett, oboist Miller and flutist Collins...no words needed....
I know music is subjective, but i can't believe there are actual people who hate this album and think its mid ... As cliché as it sounds This song is simply a masterpiece
I've tried to like this one more but it's my least favourite personally. KC never had a bad release, this album is just a bit too soft and slow for my liking. I do like stuff like exiles or walking on air but this is even softer to a point where it's hard for me to keep my interest. I'll still revisit It the future to see if my opinion changes though. It is objectively good music, its mostly just a style thing for me.
song is so beautiful both my soul & eyes cried while closed.it's a song like this that always reminds why i love music so much i couldn't live without it.
To me this song is best described as a delicate, classical piece of music. A composiotion that so beatifully express the Title. the endless time and loliness, the yearing for contact, the acceptence, the slowness of time, and the finally peace with it. Althought its full of human emotion it's expressed through the long life of a island.
Not too long ago I was literally deaf in one ear. It happened around March and was just corrected about 2 weeks ago. OMG - It was awful.
Formentera lady, sailors tale, the letter, prelude, island. MAMMAMIA. The best album of kc.
I love every small detail of this song ... so beautiful!
One of the first post-rock songs ever composed
king crimson was literally everything back then
Hearing this song live was one of my most treasured experiences as a King Crimson fan
By far, their most beautiful song
The album title and the cover have the best synergy I've ever seen/felt.
This song and the album was quite literally a life saver.
fell asleep with spotify on and this was playing when i woke up, i knew that day was going to be a good one.
Masterpiece. The best album of king crimson.
Discipline better I think
certainly one of my very favorite songs.
The flitting wind-whispers of Fripp's guitar in the bridges are the perfect touch, like petals floating on water.
Beautifully melancholic, one of my favourite KC title tracks.
キング・クリムゾンのアルバムで、一番好きなアルバム、アイランズ。それは永遠に、変わりません‼
This song is a experience.
revivió el arte
Una de las más hermosas piezas de KC, una belleza.
Greettings from Mexico every one!
Best King Crimson Song!💞💞
song is so beautiful both my soul & eyes cried while closed.it's a song like this that always reminds why i love music so much i couldn't live without it.
Gracias King Crimson
To me this song is best described as a delicate, classical piece of music. A composiotion that so beatifully express the Title.
the endless time and loliness, the yearing for contact, the acceptence, the slowness of time, and the finally peace with it. Althought its
full of human emotion it's expressed through the long life of a island.
What a beautiful song, what a beautiful comment section...
The Best of the Best!
Magical Song, and the final section with the mellotron is amazing!
Congrats from 🇧🇷
perhaps the best KC album from the audiophiliac point of view? so many beautiful casual details left in for us to savour
Not too long ago I was literally deaf in one ear. It happened around March and was just corrected about 2 weeks ago. OMG - It was awful. The worse part was when listening to music - especially in my car. No sound into my right ear. When it was corrected I put this CD in on my ride home!! Sure sounded good!!! Amazing the little things we take for granted.
I'm gonna cry
Not only freely. I am overjoyed that I I lived to see the day of everybody can find interest they want to. And that is what life and freedom is about.
i kinda like at the end 10:12 they all start talking and testing their insturments
gives a sort of strange feeling like if you are there with them
One of the best Prog bands
That part at the end where all instruments reach a crescendo just before the song fades, that fills me with goosebumps!
Jaw droppingly beautiful peace of music
So different and that makes it so beautiful !
Of all the music ever made I have decided that this is my favourite. Mark, your playing is wonderful.
Regards, Ian
Mi addormentavo con questa canzone un secolo fa in Scozia e a volte ne sogno la melodia
