Current NYU sophomore. Huge huge huge applause for having the courage to know your mind and act on your feelings. Everything you said is 100% real. The fake progressivism is very evident, and you’re spot-on about far-left ideologies being silenced. Best of luck at Minerva and beyond, friend!
Please don’t ever stop talking. You’ve got a great head on your shoulders. The world needs more open minded, observational, non biased people like you. 😁
I got in just now for undergrad although I won't be attending. The only reason I'm heavily considering the place for post-undergrad is because of the free (no tuition) medical school. I just want to use that to my disposal. I'm more confident that I can get in with the proper work in the future because of this.
DAMMMM! I graduated from NYU 39 years ago and EVERYTHING you said was going on back then (Super expensive {100 dollars credit, remember the time} , fake egalitarianism, books only at NYU Bookstore, never took out one book from the RED Monster (Bobst) [FYI at least one person jumped to their death from the 9th floor catwalk, marble floor as I remember]. Lousy food. WTF!
I went to NYU in 2012-2014 and they have reinforced the inside of Bobst with metal bars to prevent that from happening. They were in the process while I was going to school there.
Forced meal plans !! This is unbelievable. That looks like a good deal for the catering company - in general this is a strange way of functioning. By the way, it is the same company that deals with the catering in the University of London. I am glad students are clever enough to disagree with these policies and highlight these issues.
This sounds like a US-wide school problem. Not an NYU one. You honestly can't keep running from every institutional flaw. You'll be left without places to eat, sleep, learn and grow (coming from a black girl).
I love Sophias post. I respect the person who uploaded the video, but Sophia is absolutely right. I had to just get through high school and college regardless of institutional flaws. It’s not like these periods of life last forever. And enduring things you don’t like builds character. Not throwing shade at the original poster, just giving Sophia props because that’s real talk.
Kelsey Smith aren’t hbcus centered around carrying out culture (specifically black culture)? they’re less likely to have institutional flaws towards any one that goes there right? *coming from a high school student*
This video was great to see as a high school sophomore. I was considering applying to NYU as one of my top choice schools, but now that seen this video, a lot of what I've seen from their website makes the school seem like a place that just wants to take your money(i.e. no merit based scholarships,75k a year, etc.). Thanks for helping me save my money in the future.
I'm in a community college because most of my teachers in high school said it would be better to start off at a community college. After what you said, I now see why. Thank you for this eye opener.😮
I’m so glad the professors at my university show us other ways to purchase our textbooks. Sometimes they’re free and I feel so relieved when that happens. The division and favor for progressives is probably in all universities, including mine. I’m a progressive, however, it is scary to have differing opinions, since the majority is ready to pounce on you, including professors.
You're right about how your gut knows you're on the right path. I currently feel like I'm stuck at my current college. I've applied to transfer out, but there's no guarantee, as well as, it's hard to find the major I'm heading for. It's great you had a chance to get out.
As a person who worked in the undergraduate admissions department at a pretty famous US university, I can break down that $70k price tag: 1. Sports (if you are a Div I school) 2. Administrative costs. Reading prospective students' essays and applications, creating brochures and mailing out to prospective students, etc 3. Other meta costs. Running the website and academic portal, other IT needs, etc 4. Other student life activities Uni in the US is a riot of a business.
thank you for making this video, im planning on applying for fall 2021 and i was curious as to the downsides cus i hardly see anyone break their silence about it; needless to say this def gave me a diff perspective and i think it was very valid 😁
Hey Michelle, I LOVED hearing your opinions. I think that you know what you want and you went for it even though it could be scary. At the end of the day, I really respect the fact that you saw nyu was insanely expensive and that wasn’t going to benefit you, in addition to the fact that you weren’t happy there. And yes! Trust your gut! Good luck in the future :)
NYU is ridiculously overpriced. There’s so much about the real world you just won’t learn there unless they can hook you up with an internship. State schools are really good even though they don’t have the stuck up prestige factor NYU or Columbia gives you. Good for you for having the courage to make this decision.
Thanks so much for the video!! I’m a current Johns Hopkins freshman from China and will be transferring to Minerva next semester. At JHU, I feel like I’m locked inside a very Americanized campus bubble where even the so-called study abroad program I participated in had this strong “American supremacy” vibe that made me feel suffocated. Like you did at NYU, I have been absolutely enjoying the classes and exploring completely new fields that I’ve never imagined before - but amazing academics and professors (and friends) alone don’t make me feel any happier in this bigger homogeneous environment. My favorite prof was very disapproving of my decision to transfer (or take a gap year) before I was accepted to Minerva, and I was also unsure about giving up on these valuable opportunities to gain expertise in this fascinating field (History & East Asian Studies in particular). I feel like I’m in a pretty similar situation as yours last year, and I would love to hear your opinion! Thanks again for sharing your experience!
I didn’t really realize how much I appreciate nyu and my experience there till I watched ur video. Hope u find as good a school, better fit to ur ideology
I really think you would have found university in the Uk a better option. Although i’m aware money wise it might not be an option. I feel English universities treat students like adults. We don’t do meal plans (or maybe some unis do mine personally didn’t) we live in uni flats and we cook for ourselves. At my university, this is all personal experience, if the library didn’t have a book or journal we could request it and 8/10 they would buy it or rent it from another university library for us to use. Sure my experience was not perfect but i feel like i was always treated like an adult not a kid being babysat.
I tell my younger cousins not to go to a school for the name, but for what they can offer you educationally and if you feel like you're getting something out of it. Schools like NYU just look good cause of the lights they put on, and for your resume of course, but no one should ever have to struggle so much for getting their education. Especially now with Covid-19, many private institutions, and even some public institutions, have been showing their true colors as broad as day. I'm glad you dropped from NYU, even when I had auditioned for the mfa acting program, it had a vibe that felt overly superficial to it.

I went to NYU for one semester, and I remember going to my orientation in August for two days for my program. When I went to the orientation, I felt like I was out of place. I was an older student so it felt like it was too much "being a showman" when it came to the orientation for two days. I transferred after one semester due to the costs and culture of the program.
I decided to go back to college next year after several years of hiatus and lawlessness. I decided on NYU, knowing that price is atrocious but it’s the only school within reach that has what I want and what I need (Gallatin is that for me). 😭 I’ve heard the horror stories and the stereotypes of the school, but I likely won’t live in campus housing.
Angela Yuan yep after one semester! Minerva doesn’t take enough transfer credits so you have to start over as a freshman but that also means they don’t care if you finish the year at your current uni or not!
I apologize but what is Minerva? Is it a college because when I searched it up, I didn’t really get answers , it says it’s a university program. Does that means it’s just a uni?
Baris Tezel it’s a college that’s under keck graduate institute! The degree you get from it is just like any other bachelors degree but the experience you have is different
I noticed you were in Gallatin which you say was your favorite part, as someone who struggles to choose between music and arts, would making a major at Gallatin be a smart idea? Do you get good internships or anything?
I hear you Michelle. I did an NYU "Pre-College" program the summer in between my junior and senior years of college -- it was ok, but the competition to get admitted to the program + register for the classes was INSANE! NOT even CUNY classes were that nuts to get into. 😱🤮 I also did two free Tisch "Emerging Artists" 14-week programs also during my junior and senior years (once again, INSANE competition to get into the program/courses), AND, then promptly left NYC to go to college in Massachusetts. 🤣 Nearly EVERYONE I went to high school with in Brooklyn went to NYU, I was OVER IT. I had a MUCH better undergraduate experience at the small LAC I went to, versus my friends from high school who went to NYU. They were ALWAYS complaining about their experience, while I was pretty happy being up in New England, surrounded by nature, and having PLENTY of arts and culture around me, WITHOUT all the distractions of NYC (on top of NYU itself) to annoy me. Besides, I'd gotten QUITE ENOUGH of that growing up in Brooklyn. 🙄🤪 Good for you following your instincts. You should NEVER settle for being less than COMPLETELY happy on your academic journey. Berkeley is the MUCH BETTER university if you ask me. Better weather, a real campus, more liberal institution, better value because it's public, rather than private. She's right though, if you feel like you aren't in the right place instinctually for college, you will know it.
That's bull shit. NYU is one of the most open-minded institutions out there. Don't blame on your environment when you are the one not adapting to it and utilize the resources to enrich your experience. Best of luck with your future.
Congratulation for your decision. I should have done the same thing 9:12 long time ago and I didn't do it. I can tell you NYU is overrated and you can find the same education and some other places for less money.
All the students in the 60's protesting were suspended/arrested as well. That's a part of it. If the school is backing your protest, then what system are you protesting?
Cristal Gonzalez which I think is a very valid concern. Michelle spoke on the problematic campus climate that is common to most predominantly white universities, especially those who claim inclusivity with diversity efforts. Economics plays a role in the sustainability of diversity and the practice of inclusion. On a side note, I am aware that this was a comment made over a month ago, but since I just found this video today figured that I should send a response... Take care:)
to quote my fellow communist friend: "the pros of most colleges is that they're pretty liberal...the cons of most colleges is that they're pretty liberal". to be honest, I would expect NYU to be suuuuuuper neoliberal but pretend they're progressive
Angela Peters Hi! For me, like-minded means you share the same values like open mindedness or critical thinking for example but you don’t necessarily need to agree and might even have opposing views for certain politics or social issues. Whereas when I said like opinioned I meant everyone has the same stance on most political social issues and how to solve them.
I pay taxes... and ok fair a lot of our tax money is wasted and that's a separate issue but a good portion also go to things that benefit our society like roads and schools... not sure if you can equate that to a res hall's pumpkin painting party? Just my personal opinion too btw! Not saying that's objectively not a fair comparison!
If you go to Evergreen State College in Washington, you'll see what "real extreme" liberalism is. Lol... NYU is just a piece of cake. Good video, though. Very clear and constructed.
Wait, you must have a mealplan? Wow, I'm from te Netherlands and literally not a single university or college here that I know of offers mealplans, you're just expected to find yourself a house and fix your own dinner, I get why you thought it was annoying that you had to get that...

honestly i don't care about the controversial stuff so nyu actually isn't that bad
Congratulation for your decision. I should have done the same thing 9:12 long time ago and I didn't do it. I can tell you NYU is overrated and you can find the same education and some other places for less money.
I subbed right away because I following diverse channels, and she’s so adorable!!
All the students in the 60's protesting were suspended/arrested as well. That's a part of it. If the school is backing your protest, then what system are you protesting?
Go to a 🇬🇧 UK or European Uni, they are much better value. Majority are Government backed & not-for-profit!
TRUE ABOUT EVENTS. LIKE I DONT WANNA PAY FOR SOMEONE TO PAINT FUCKING PUMPKINS OR EAT CAKE. I do not care. Should be optional.
all your reasons literally included money
Cristal Gonzalez
which I think is a very valid concern.
Take care:)
280k for a 4 year undergrad? Yikes. That’s ridiculous. Don’t blame you for leaving based on that fact alone.
to quote my fellow communist friend: "the pros of most colleges is that they're pretty liberal...the cons of most colleges is that they're pretty liberal". to be honest, I would expect NYU to be suuuuuuper neoliberal but pretend they're progressive
Tbh any school acts like that bc of PR. Its annoying if anything.
I don't understand the distinction you were trying to make between like-minded and "like-opinioned"
"If I don't use it, or if I don't need it, and I'm paying for it, it's basically a huge waste of money." Just wait till she finds out about taxes!
You don't need college, you already are as smart as the professors!
very informative, thanks!
Literally every point you made can be argued for every large university. You said nothing substantial whatsoever.
This makes me sad because NYU is my dream school but now hearing this it sounds like I shouldn’t go at all 😔
yo same tho, but now that I think about it majority of the universities in the US are like this so there no escape……
5:34 gina is that youuuu!!!
