  • In this second of two videos I talk about how some ancient wisdom teachings and ideas came to be integrated with the Enneagram to form the modern Enneagram of personality. If you want to go deeper into the Enneagram as Gurdjieff taught it, then visit the EICSP events page where you can see details of the Fourth Way enneagram course I am facilitating.

Thanks, Vince. I have amended and updated the content of this video in a series of three videos: The Ancient Roots of the Enneagram, The Origins and Development of the Enneagram, and The Rediscovery and Development of the Enneagram in Modern Times. I shall be deleting the older versions.

Thank you. I will when I have a moment. I m always open to learning more. The current video needs updating anyway, but I have been busy teaching on the Fourth Way or Process Enneagram of late..

Mr. Webb, I want you to know that your presentation is well done. You bring up many exciting ideas. However, Oscar Ichazo was not the first to apply typology to the Enneagram. From my studies, the first to introduce typology to the Enneagram was Rodney Collins, a student of P.D. Ouspensky, a mathematician, "occult,"t," and writer. It is said that Rodney Collins's development of the Enneagram in this way was partially from Ouspensky, and thus Gurdjieff based on the study of essence typology -- essence body types. Collins recorded this information on typology within the Enneagram in his book, "The Theory of Celestial Influence." Also worth noting, Collins started a school in Mexico City in 1948... and schools stemming from his teachings opened up all around South America, including Buenos Aires, which he visited. It is, without question, the line of Enneagram presented as typology derived from Collins's ideas. It would've been good to mention him when considering typology.

Thank you so much for filling in a gp in my knowledge on this topic. I will make sure I amend and include mention of Rodney Collins in an updated version of this video. I had not come across Rodney Collin's work before, though I am familiar with Ouspensky.

Another 4th Way Enneagram book is The Intelligent Enneagram by A.G.E Blake. Not heard of Rdney Collins - did he link typology of essence and personality the way it is done today . My sense was that the 4th Way use and application of the symbol was more with other processes and not so much on Essence and Personality which was a later development via Caudio especially for personal work

Ras9272 Thank you for the history of the personality types. I've heard bits and pieces of this history but you have stated it beautifully!

    Hello
My name is Ian. Many years ago I found a book outlining Mr Gurdjieff’s use of the enneagram for the process of writing a book. Any advice or direction to identify the book or the diagram would be helpful.
    Yours Aye
    Ian

You probably found it in Ouspensky's 'In Search of the Miraculous. I am offering a whole series of seven modules exploring this in depth beginning on November 7th. It is hosted by the Edinburgh International Centre for Spirituality and Peace (EICSP.org) Here is a link where you can find details and how to register. eicsp.org/events/event-details/1214-online-zoom-workshop-series-the-enneagram-of-cosmic-laws-7-november-19-december-2024

I was told that Gurdjief never mentioned the enneagram in his teaching it was Ouspensky who introduced it

The first time we find the Enneagram symbol in modern times is, indeed, in Ouspensky's book, "In Search of the Miraculous'. However that book is simply a record of Gurdjieff's teaching as noted down in detail by Ouspensky. It was Gurdjieff himself who discovered the symbol and introduced it to his students. I have more detail in my updated series of videos: The Ancient Roots of the Enneagram, The Origins and Development of the Enneagram Symbol, and The Rediscovery and Development of the Enneagram in modern times.
