    B5 is the father of modern Sci-Fi and showed that extended plot lines are feasible over the length of a TV show. So much of TV not just Sci-Fi owes so much to the trail that Babylon 5 blazed.

    B5 creator JMS recommended this channel so here I am. Your review summed up beautifully why Babylon 5 is great television no matter the genre. It's also influential as seen by the wave of serialized series that have followed in its wake.

    There seems to be this thing about B5... where it's so good that people cannot stop talking about it. My friends are certainly suffering through that :D I found this show about in March of last year, after getting into the soundtrack (I'm in university, and often listen to soundtracks while studying).
    It took me until my summer break to squeeze in the first season episodes (not because it was bad, but because I was busy)... then I binged, about two episodes per day, through everything. Seasons 2,3,4,5. The movies. Legend of the Rangers. Crusade. The Lost Tales. I saved the series finale for last. And my summer break ended gloriously with me in utter tears because I didn't want B5 to be over.
    This show is GOOD. There's so much in it - a lot of it you'll only catch on rewatch, and some other things will thoroughly gutpunch you the first time. (What a certain very timely season 2 episode did to me...)
    I remember watching the final three episodes of the third season in a row. Suddenly it was 3am... and I had to wait three days until I could continue. How the original fans managed a wait of months I don't know. Three days later, I watched the first six episodes of season 4 in a single night.
    If you are watching the DVDs, may I recommend the audio commentaries on a few episodes per season? Don't watch them until you've seen it all, but do watch them afterwards. The JMS ones are full of insight. The cast ones are mainly fun. And there's a bit of convention material one should see... particularly the 20th anniversary and the "JMS promise" panel. It contains spoilers at least until late season 3, so wait until then... but it reveals an important fact that was not known to fans up until that point.
    I must say, I'm a bit jealous of you. It's only been about a year, but I already wish I could see it again for the first time. Enjoy the ride.

      @mayra Whoa! Thanks for the fantastic input. Indeed, this show is amazing for all the reasons I mention in the video and more. It's cult status is well deserved and there's so much more to go, for me.
      Being a big fan of Making Of documentaries and behind-the-scenes material, I'm certain I'll be watching all of that content once I quench this thirst for more of this masterpiece - that's different from the moment when I reach its conclusion as a rewatch is not outside the realm of possibility.
      I'm already such a big fan of B5 and can't stop praising it. So it came as a big, heartwarming surprise when I learned that my little video caught the eye of one J. Michael Straczynski. That was more than I could've asked for - that all my praise of B5 reached the ultimate person at which it was aimed.
      The future imagined in the B5 universe is the kind of rich, adventurous utopia toward which we've always wanted to Erick m evolve. Indeed, the future isn't what it once was but it's still very much within reach to go back to a place of principled dreams and methodical determination. There's still a lot to unravel but this show is already a prime example of what I keep referencing in my videos regarding the true power of "pop" culture: it is the means through which we reflect our shared dreams of the future we want to build, and empowers us to achieve it. 😎💪

      @@theadamsden Have you heard of the Lurker's Guide? It's a website which has been up since the show's original run (and some pages are horribly outdated, but for many that does not matter) which has information about the episodes, analysis, questions up to that point and JMS commentaries from Usenet groups and GEnie. He was among the first to regularly communicate with fans online, and there's a lot of interesting information there. Not to mention that he still talks about B5 and answers questions on twitter!

    I loved B5 from it's original run back in the day. It was truly ground-breaking in terms of story development and the shift from a purely episodic format to an overall arc narrative. It's legacy on the sci-fi community is immense, even if it's not as well known as it should be.
    I would love to see something more set in that universe, but with WB sitting on the rights, and the tragic loss of over half the cast in the last 20 years, I doubt we will see anything.

      @Smurflord - It is truly amazing! It's value and appreciation are definitely heightened in such a barren landscape of creativity - like water in the desert - but B5 has so much to offer regardless of the times we're living through. There are plenty signs that "times they are a-changin' " for the better so we'll see what comes. Stay strong💪 Have you watched The Expanse? Definitely worth your time.

      @@theadamsden Yes, I love the Expanse, especially the attention to the reality of space travel.
      B5 needs a sugar daddy like Bezos. Allegedly, he really liked the show andwas annoyed that the Sci-Fi channel cancelled the Expanse after 3 seasons, so he bought it from them to make more seasons.

    As an old guy (I used to record the first broadcast episodes using a VCR on a timer), I have the same envy as you for the "newbies" that are seeing it for the first time. It has often been said that B5 was in competition with ST: DS9. Both shows premiered in 1993 and there is a rumor that after JMS pitched B5 to Paramount, DS9 stole the concept. Even so, B5 comes out the winner. Despite having major studio backing and pedigree, DS9 pales in comparison and even though B5 got pushed off of one network onto another, its fanbase was so strong, it was unstoppable.

    • @theadamsden
      @theadamsden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that, Louis! I have yet to see DS9 which, as an absolute fan of scifi, I'm sure I will enjoy. I'm not sure how DS9 escaped me back in the day, I can only assume I was focused on other things. But it's definitely on my list. Nevertheless, B5 is among the greats and lives on!

    Babylon 5 is wonderful and still relevant to this day. Straczynski is a damn fine writer. For CGI of its time it has held up okay today. The politics, intrigue, battles, tactics, realism of sublight fighters, gray areas, character interactions... all works very well. It's a gritty show. Get through season 1 and keep going until the end. The series is at its core antifascist, so if that bothers you you might not like it or you'll be rooting for the wrong side. Babylon 5, the station, is very much a place intended for compromise and understanding, not totalitarianism. The goal is peace among as many races as possible. It's a long road to get there and some people you like will .... I'll let you experience for yourself. One of the best descriptions of the show is "it's real."
    If you do end up watching the sequel spinoff series Crusade, do not watch them in aired order. They were aired out of order and it breaks the story. There is likely a reddit list for the Crusade viewing order.

    • @theadamsden
      @theadamsden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed, very relevant today. There have been countless times already when I heard one of the main characters (especially, Sheridan and previously Sinclair) saying something that immediately made me think how important it would be for us, as a society, to go back to a place where that bit of wisdom was commonplace.
      I'll look into Cursade once I finish the original series.
      Thank for the hint! If you enjoyed this video, you might enjoy my exploration of the Philip K. Dick Universe 😎👍 : th-cam.com/video/SkGt2FbASTc/w-d-xo.html
