One of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made and DEEPLY, CRIMINALLY underrated and underknown. You can feel the love and passion that went into that show. And the miniatures always stood out to me as just beautiful. They had real weight and age to them. Just great work by everyone involved.

I've always found Bill's work to be amazing, and as already indicated he seems so grounded in this interview. One of the delights of the "Red Dwarf" series was just how good the miniature effects looked, giving many feature films a run for their money.

I'm only now finding out who the guys behind some of my favourite films and TV shows are. Amazing stories from interesting people. So grateful that my parents allowed us to watch all that SCi Fi. I don't even think my dad enjoyed them, because I found out recently that he thought a lot of the TV we watched when I was younger was just nonsense, but he nonetheless sat with us to watch; so I'm grateful, because he could have easily chosen to watch something else and we would have had to watch whatever that was.
By the Time Red Dwarf came around I was a teenager just finishing school and was already hooked from years of scifi; what a blessing Red Dwarf was. Totally thankful for these hard working artists that helped to bring escape and happiness to the confused young kid kid that I was back then.

I agree! You can usually always tell when something is CGI no matter how good it is because it somehow seems artificial and cartoonish.. But if you use actual miniatures on a large scale there really is nothing more realistic than that! And yes CGI can be used to enhance it slightly with good compositing but it should never ever be the primary focus behind a good effect

I haven't watched RD in a very, very long time, but I'm both pleased to see these SFX workshop glimpses, and sorry to learn that the main designer is no longer with us (hopefully he has found a lovely, sunny place in the great beyond that serves fresh mango juice and has toe-nibbling goldfish).
The physical models are beyond wonderful. Rather than listing them off in timestamps, just know that every one holds a particular fascination with me, even the works in progress. The Treklike/Orvillian/Galaxy Quest-esque Trojan...the black curved-wing deal studded with guns, looking like a very ancient Sith Order fighter with a few Bird of Prey DNA strands...and all the other ones that didn't get a close-up. The greebles, gubbins, bitz, discards, and unfinished models or broken toys in the clear containers make me drool over what could be made with them. Were I younger, healthier, flush with "walkin' 'round money", and had the workspace, I'd do the same just for enjoyment, perhaps to decorate the ceiling of a school science lab or art room, for inspiration in both outer space and multimedia art.

I watched _Breach_ (2020) last night, one of the worst films I've ever seen, and spent most of the time thinking how it looked far more low-budget than Red Dwarf. The sets looked ridiculous. The walls were covered in unnecessary, unconvincing greebes and laughably circuitous wiring. The designers obviously hadn't given a single thought to what practical application they might have. The storyline was also horrendous. But incredibly, it starred Bruce Willis!
