Fixing a LEAK in my sailboat UNDER WATER with Splash Zone - UNTIE THE LINES IV #13

  • Back to Marina life! I had moved Karl to Vista Mar Marina so Maria could give me a hand to weld the hole in my fuel tank.
    It’s also time for some engine maintenance!
    Unfortunately, I find a little something that adds another fairly big project to the boat job list: a small leak under the waterline. Time to hop into the water and fix the leak with some Splash Zone, an epoxi that cures under water.
    Ahoy,
    Nike & Karl

    This is why I watch. Not only are you a bad ass, but you put yourself out there, with the highs and the lows. I'm man enough to admit I've gotten so overwhelmed when things aren't going right I've sat down and cried, but then pick myself up and plug on. Good job, Nike. It always seems to work out in the end. Be safe.

      Gary Souza yes, Gary, sometimes one has to just sit and let it all out. It helps to gather some strength to power through the challenge ahead.
      I always find that keeping a clear focus on what you want and where you want to be also helps to overcome moments where you feel overwhelmed. It’s mostly a question of will power and then some planning on how to get things fixed 🤣

    Nothing beats careening on a beach with a mudflat shoal for a quickie job on outside hull work, changing a shaft seal or eliminating ALL thruhulls, keep 2, 1 in, 1 out, and use a manifold and plumbing to move fluids around inside, reducing risk of leakers.

    I’ve said it before and will probably say it again but I love your can-do attitude and perseverance. “There is nothing I cannot do, only that which I have not yet done”. You know when to ask for help, take advice, and not even skip a beat. I love that you also share with us that you are not always Wonder Woman and show you can be vulnerable to the ups and downs. You’re truly an amazing woman Nike!

      Rusty Brindle thanks, Rusty. For sure, I still have to improve in the “asking for help” department. Sometimes a lot of time passes and a lot of trials and tribulations before I can admit to myself that I won’t be able to solve some problem by myself ...but I am getting better at it...at least that’s what I am telling myself 🤣

    I would suggest reinstalling your oil filter in a remote position because it's way more easy to replace it. Also, rather than open the heath exchanger you can run freshwater for a few minutes after using the engine or clean internally with buster clamp, much easier than open everything every time.

    Mike Jacoby, bit of a legend in my world. Such a bummer to have unendingly things needing work. My first boat was 40 years old and after 3 years of non-stop fixing I finally realised that I wa and wold always be just spending more time doing that than actually using the boat for what I brought it for. My second boat while costing more has easily repaid that in the last 2 years by having nothing major go wrong. And instead of sailing 3 days then spending 3 days fixing things I can just sail all the time and keep up with normal maintenance along the way. i was very emotionally attached to my first boat so it wasn't easy to "give up" on her but what made me take the decision was that I finally realised I just wouldn't feel confident sailing big oceans when at any time some thing was likely to break.

    I’m a 19 year Journeyman Diesel Mechanic. I’ve worked on that engine more times then I can count. I ran a shop working on those almost exclusively.
    It’s great that you’re doing your maintenance yourself. It looks like you’re doing a quality job.
    FYI it sounds like your waiting for the glow plugs to warm up before you start. Don’t bother. On that engine you should only need those in cold weather. Even if it doesn’t start (which it will) you won’t cause any damage to the engine.

      David Macdonald sometimes it’s good to take a break from the boat work for sure. And then come back with fresh wind and energy. I don’t mind the boat work in general, but it’s the constant battle that sometimes wears on me. If there are times of happy sailing in between, then I usually don’t mind working on the boat for a bit, it’s part of the deal and usually fun as long as it does not come in chunks that are too big to chew 🤣

    In the large industrial sites we have here, and even in some private pickup trucks, there are large triple (series) diesel filter canisters on engines. They probably are used on larger marine/ship engines too. It not only provides backup capacity, but also more extensively filters water and debris and other contaminants out. With the questionable diesel quality in tropical or remote locations, you might wish to install an oversized set of standard sized industrial filter canisters in your fuel line. It might even be an advantage simply due to common availability of them because of high demand for ship engine maintenance in areas like Panama.

    Hi, have been enjoying all your videos from the beginning. I've had 30+ foot boats for over 20 years. I've been trouble shooting and fixing electrolysis problems on boats and land (Slab Leaks) all that time. While watching this video I've realized you have an electrolysis problem that is causing your leaking tanks and now hull. Don't worry it could be something as simple as a bad wire caring low voltage. Tons of DIY info on how to trace stray voltage. I do know aluminum boats are extremely vulnerable to electrolysis in all its forms. I know for example one stray button battery lost in the bilge can sink an aluminum boat in a few months. Also, I am retired Airline Pilot and know their are tons of DIY ways to find cracks and thin spots in aluminum structures. Something you should plan on during your haul out. Hope to see you out their soon on my project pock cruiser (Newport 27) soon. Fair Seas and following winds.

    I just want to take a moment to say that as far as I’m concerned you’re doing cruising right. I’m just a lake sailor with a 1960’s plastic fantastic racer/weekender so maybe I’m not the best person to say but I think you do things right. TH-cam is full of people that either spend all their time fitting out and preparing to leave or courting disaster through inexperience. You went and got an affordable old boat, you take care of it right, you don’t bother with frills, and you just got out there. But you’re also very careful. You got out there and actually did it and you do so very safely. So good on you. You look like you could use a little pick-me-up after that leak but sh!t happens with boats. You can do it - you’ve already proven that you can. As long as you’re enjoying it keep up the great work.

    A good running diesel always warms the heart of a snipe. Glad to see your tank is SS and not aluminum. More flexibility with weld repairs on SS. I have looked into aluminum repair and welding compounds of low enough temperature to use with a propane torch, but MAPP would be preferable.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spencer marshall oh, this is a water tank and it won’t go back in. The diesel tank that needs repair is aluminum......😬

    • @melee401
      @melee401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh :) The aluminum welding (brazing) compounds I was speaking of you might want to engage are for hull repairs anyway. You have that twin keel and the thing is made to be beached. A leaking seam near shore on her should only be a tide repair away. Striking an electric bead to that tank's welds was not one of our better decisions. That tank should have been removed and cleaned down and coated on the inside and on the bottom outside. If an arc was struck to it things might have very well gotten worse on that.
      You are simply going to have to try working with some of these low temperature flame compounds Nike. You bought an aluminum boat and you need to get some scrap aluminum to screw up on learning to keep Karl whole and your happiness in tact. When you strike a bead electrically to aluminum the panels swell from the heat more so than using a small flame. That is more controllable with a torch. When the panels swell from the heat the welds can give out left and right. That is why the welder who worked on Karl in the first refit used a gas flame. Re-welding an aluminum seam electrically I am learning more often than not isn't the best way to go about it. But the epoxy compound you shoved in there works for now. I would shutter to think I will meet you on the hard one day and poor Karl's seams are a mass of epoxy filler. You looked saddened over the re-emergence of that issue. A small MAPP gas cylinder and torch head should be your best friend by now. Seasoned snipes know something about brazing and welding so the time has arrived for you to do your aluminum welding 101 class dear. There are youtube videos with people using those compounds around too :)

      She was pouring from a jerry can, never prefill diesel filters, the fuel needs to be run thru the filters. Oil filters different story, fuel filters, you’re asking for trouble.
      I suppose you could perfectly clean a diesel fuel can, then pour filtered fuel in it, then directly into the filter, but I don’t think that’s what happened, and even if it was that’s a lot of opportunities for fuel to get contaminated.
      Doesn’t take much contamination at all to clog an injector, never seen a engine manual that recommends doing it that way. May be fine 4/5 of the times but not worth the risk.

    Wrestling the water tank left an impressive bruise on your right shoulder. Hope it didn't feel as painful as it looked. Can't wait to see what happens next.

    Hi and a Happy new year to you! It hurts me to see that you are struggling with your hull again! Hope that you have all ready sorted this out! :)
    Regarding your freshwater cooler... as long as you have a ok quality of cooling additiv in your fresh water there should be no reason to pull the pipestack out of the housing. There is nothing no contamination on that side that messes it up. Just stick with cheking the sea whater side, less work and less possibility to break something :)

    I think your air intake port is supposed to be pointing down to ensure no heavy dirt gets pulled in. I noticed it was pointing up towards the hatch.

Hence it is a "4-dimensional system", that can show where you are at what time. The time right now is Dec. 16 2019 at 21:37:44 London time 🧔 🎅 ... Merry Christmas.

    As I watched you fighting back the tears I wanted to hug you and remind you of how far you've come. Karl was a major disaster and you worked through everything, one at a time. Remember to slow down, think things through and ask for help when you absolutely need it. When you find that your energy and spirits get really low, climb off Karl and turn around to look at him to see how far you've actually come. Give yourself some credit, give Karl some credit for responding to you and then get back to work. Thanks for sharing your video journal of your life.

    also forthe screws on the heat exchanger i've always used copper grease (antisieze)... now is new and they unbolt easy but in time they wont... always search in the heat exchanger the broken piece fromthe missing zinc on the anode... most of the times they broke losse and endup around the circuit... once it cloghed the output of the sea water on one of our engines...

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ElectronicMarine yep, good hint. I did find quite some pieces when I looked around. It was my first change, so luckily I looked at everything quite thoroughly. That could have easily clogged some of the water flow

    I cant imagine having a hole in my home. I would be stressed to the max, unable to sleep or stop thinking about it. If it ever happens again you will be a lot more prepared and the issue will be a lot easier to deal with, mentally.

    • @WhiteSpotPirates
      @WhiteSpotPirates  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      boostnsvt since it is not the first time, I am a little less stressed but it is for sure not super fun. It’s good to walk through the temporary fix in the water, though, good prep for an emergency at sea repair. And good to see that a small hole like this can be fixed easily.👍

    If i remember the bottom needs paint. Maybe when you scraped it last you took a bit out of the barrier coat and now its a leak.
    Nothing you cant fix. And you need a haul out anyway.
    Just trying to make it sound like its part of the job. And it is.
    Karl will be ready when you are.

    TO ALL CRUISERS WANTING MORE INFO ON DETAILS FOR DOCUMENTATION BEFORE ARRIVAL TO ECUADOR WATERS MAINLAND.
    ALL THIS INFORMATION WAS GATHERED LAST MONTH FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES. PORT CAPTAIN BUILDING SALINAS, PUERTO LOPEZ PORT CAPTAIN OFFICER DESK, PUERTO LUCIA YACH CLUB OFFICES, LA LIBERTAD AGENT, AND SALINAS NAVY BASE OFFICER. "ALL" THIS OFFICES GAVE ME DIFFERENT INFO DETAILS. THE ONE I TRUSTED MORE, ALTHOUGH I AM FINDING OUT MORE IN NEXT WEEKS, WAS PUERTO LUCIA YACH CLUB DESK WITH DIANA JOSE AT MARINERIA OFFICE RIGHT AT PIER BY FUEL STATION.
    HERE DOCUMENTS YOU NEED BEFORE ENTERING FOR INMIGRATION AND PORT CAPTAINS :
    • PORT CAPTAIN CLEARENCE FROM COUNTRY OF DEPARTURE (ZARPE DE CAPITANIA PUERTO DE PAIS DE ORIGEN O SALIDA)

    • CAPTAINS LICENSE OF CREWMEMBER OR OWNERS. OR SIMILAR DOCUMENT AS TITLE OF NAVIGATION AND /OR SEAMANSHIP COURSE. LICENCIA DE CAPITAN ABORDO O DOCUMENTO SIMILAR EN ESCUELA DE NAVEGACION, ETC).
    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW SO THAT PORT CAPTAINS AND OTHER INMIGRATION AUTHORITIES DONT GET "MORE THAN WHAT IS NEEDED" TO BE PAID:
    THE AUTHORITIES THAT WILL VISIT YOUR VESSEL ARE PORT CAPTAINS, HEALTH, INMIGRATION, CUSTOMS INSPECTOR(S). MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL STAMPED PASSPORTS NEEDED.
    • ALL VESSELS UNDER 50 TONS DONT NEED AN AGENT TO DO ALL PAPERWORK PROCESSES FOR ENTERING THE COUNTRY OF ECUADOR. (THE AGENT AT LA LIBERTAD TOLD ME OTHERWISE AND SALINAS PORT CAPTAIN OFFICER..)
    • THE MAIN DOCUMENT YOU NEED TO GET FROM CUSTOMS AUTHORITY IS CALLED A "DJT" WHICH STANDS FOR: "DECLARATION UNDEROATH OF TRANSPORTATION OF VESSEL" WHICH HAS NO COST THE FOIRST TIME AND VALID 90 DAYS. IF YOU WANT TO GET EXTENSION THEN YOU PAY APPROXIMATE $280 AND NEED NO AGENT TO DO SO. FIND OUT MORE ON PORT CAPTAINS OFFICE OR BETTER AT CUSTOMS OFFICE ON PORT YOU ARE.
    • THE 3 MAIN PORT CAPTAINS OFFICES WITH ALL OFFICES AUTHORITIES WHERE YOU CAN GET FULL ARRIVAL AND LEGALIZATION ARE : SALINAS PORT CAPTAIN, (PUERTO LUCIA BY LA LIBERTAD WE RECOMMEND FOR NOW WILL WE FIND MORE DETAILS) LA LIBERTAD PORT CAPTAIN, MANTA PORT CAPTAIN, BAHIA DE CARAQUEZ PORT CAPTAIN. AND PROBABLY PUERTO LOPEZ P CAPTAIN OFFICE.
    • IF YOU WANT TO CRUISE ALONG THE COAST YOU NEED TO GET A "CABOTAJE COSTERO TURISTICO" OR "CABOTAJE TURISTICO". FROM THIS 2 CAPITANIAS OR PORT CAPTAIN OFFICES (BAHIA DE CARAQUEZ, MANTA, OR SALINAS) I AM FINDING OUT MORE IN NEXT WEEKS MONTHS ABOUT THIS. BECAUSE IT ALL SEEMED TO ME NOT SO CLEAR.

    Kleiner Tip für große Mädchen: Ihr habt da gutes Epoxi, das gehört für den Notfall in 2 große Spritzen mit mehreren groben Schwämmen und ein paar kleinen Brettchen in eine Notfallbox! Solltet Ihr einmal auf laufen und ein Loch bis zur größe von einem Golfball unter der Wasserlienie haben!
    Wenn der Notfall eintritt beide Spritzen in der Schale leeren, vermischen und die Schwämme in das Epoxi drücken, dann sofort die Schwämme auf das Loch Drücken und mit den Brettchen verstärken. Mit dem Hintern drauf setzen und warten bis das Epoxi ausgehäret ist. Während der Wartezeit, je nach Glaubensrichtung Gebete sprechen und sich in Erinnerung rufen, das der erste Papst auch Fischer gewesen ist; sich bewust werden das Seeleute immer zusammen halten.
    PS: Nach dem Unfall kann man auch gefahrlos wieder zum Ateisten werden.

    They didn't make that tank easy to service, would have been better as 2 more manageable size tanks.
    That hull leak is a worry, hopefully it is only a void in a weld that has corroded, that's what it looks like anyway.
