I have a T5/6 complete spinal cord injury which happened in 1992. I bought an RGK SUB4 about four years ago and it’s the best wheelchair that I’ve had so far. Great review and I might go for the RGK SUB4 Octane next time, although want to get some more time out of my current chair. Your reviews are so helpful. Thanks
Instead of cutting the sideguards down, perhaps you could get more more mounting holes drilled, say, an inch above the current holes. Then you can move the guards down an inch for most of the year, but you have the option of moving them up an inch when snow is a problem.
@@EmpoweredPara You're very welcome. I'm not certain it would work, I googled images of the chair and it looks like the brake mount might prevent the sideguard from being moved down, but it's worth investigating. If you do it you can probably use one guard as a template/drilling guide on the other one, just lay one on top of the other, shift it an inch, and mark the 3 holes on the one below.
Really great video.❤ I actually like all the extra room on the sides, for pretty much the reason you mentioned. And I have to have armrests. So I went with a Strongback 24. Best ever.
That RGK is pretty snazzy looking but those clothing guards are a little tall for my liking, also personally I would prefer them to be removable. I love the fact that it is so light. My own manual chair which I got last July is a Helio C2, a carbon fiber chair which is also super light. Hope to see another video in the future just to show if that RGK breaks down or folds at all to make it smaller for transportation should you ever have to travel in a vehicle that doesn't have a lift.
Hey Brittney, I don’t know if you ever read the comments on these really old videos of yours, but I just realized something. I’ve been watching a lot of the Paralympics especially Volleyball, Swimming and Basketball. And in Basketball, I see that a lot of the players have the same maker of wheelchairs as you - RGK! Must be a really well-made chair with great manoeuvrability. How cool is that?!??
Hi. My wife has had rgk wheelchairs for over 20-years and will not change brand. As for the side guards you can get them them that are rolled over, so they cover the wheel. this means they do not have a sharp Edge sticking up up and also makes it easier to put a transfer abroad on
@empowered para Glad you're happy with you're new chair, I moved from Alberta to BC and went from RGK to TiLite primarily for the same reason you went to the RGK, hopefully you have better luck than I did. BTW, if you want to keep your Ti lite as a spare all you need to do to make it 14" wide is order a camber tube and foot rest, easy swap with a set of allen wrenches

My main concern is I weigh around the 220-230 mark and I like to be able to go off of curbs. I'll look more into whatever content is on your channel and see if anything helps me out here.
Here are the videos I would suggest you watch before choosing a new wheelchair. th-cam.com/play/PLINXPKVZID238HgwvPVCw5jKSykB3TcNr.html I viewer commented on one of my videos that RGK is a lower quality titanium than tilite but I haven't heard any bad things from my heavier friends in terms of lower durability. Something to keep in mind though! Also another viewer said that the folding backrest on an RGK is poor poor quality. I have a fixed backrest so can't comment on that. I love my RGK and would recommend it to anyone.
I saw your video with Reg from 49Bespoke yesterday, it was really good. I am currently looking for a new chair as well. I emailed them yesterday. Who measured you for your wheelchair if you didn't go to the store in Ontario? I have the same issue, as I'm in Quebec.
I was very surprised when you said that you had your previous chair for 12 years! That seems like a very long time for something that is used so much. How long do most people keep their chairs?
People with insurance can get a new chair usually every 5 years and tend to do so but a lot of us get attached to our mobility aids once we’ve found one we like so we probably hang on to them a longer than we should 😅 I use a wheelchair and a cane and my last cane broke super bad and is totally unfixable but I still have it because I’m too emotionally attached to throw it away lmaoo
But usually they don’t last more than ten years. Titanium chairs last longer than aluminum (her chair is titanium) one also, and it also depends on how much and how rough they’re used. As long as the frame is in good condition you can just switch out parts as they wear down and it’s still technically the same chair so they can go on for a while!
my previous one was 10 years, the one i currently have is 7 years, just considering a brand new one right now . 1/ With proper maintenance, it's actually pretty rare to get any issue with the frame . I'm just moving from one to a lighter, better built one. 2/There are not much real innovations on manual wheelchair market , I switched from aluminum to titanium, now considering carbon fiber and suspension forks but innovation is slow and parts which can deteriorized with time can actually be easely replaced in most cases. If your chair fits your body and condition needs for your lifestile , there 's no reason to change without major upgrade available. 3/I won't be able to finance a brand new chair every year anyway
As an ATP who has worked with Paralympians and winners of the Boston Marathon, I see this all of the time. There used to be a "guideline" in the industry that a user should have a palm's width of space, i.e., .75" -1" between their hips and the sides of the wheelchair. I have provided custom wheelchairs to users where the manufacturer's width listed on the wheelchair, i.e.13" 14", 15, etc., is actually narrower than the user's anatomical hip width measurement. The best thing a vendor or ATP do is listen to the end user.
Man, I had no idea there was so much to consider when buying a custom wheelchair. Now I get the reason for the model name “Sub 4” meaning under 4 kg. I’m thinking that the narrower size must make it more manoeuvrable. I had no idea about the “push handles”; now I understand that how important they are for when someone bumps you up stairs. And I don’t seem to see - not sure what they are called - “anti-tip bars” at the back. Does your chair not have them? It is a very nice fancy and sleek looking chair Brittney!
I know this is a really late reply to your comment but most full time wheelchair users with lower injuries don’t use anti-tip on their chairs. They just get in the way and prevent proper independence.
@ Thank you. I did not know this. Am I to assume that there is more chance of falling forward out of one’s chair (such as when the front casters hit a stone, etc) than there is of tipping over backwards?
Nice review. In the US we have to get new manual chairs every 5 years because insurance won't pay for repairs if the chair is 5+ years old and medical supply shops won't work on them either (even if you pay out of pocket).

Being able to fit into a 14x16 chair, and actually being sized for a 13x16 one, means you are very slim. Do you ever worry about your chair being too narrow in case you gain any weight? Or does that just encourage you to exercise and eat well to maintain your current weight?
@ So true. Replacement shoulders are not an easy fix. My wife went thru that but it was on her CP-affected side so she doesn’t use that arm much so that the fact that it took about 6+ months to recover wasn’t a big problem. But for someone who needs both arms and hence both shoulders each and every day, yes, I sure as heck don’t want you to ever have to go through that. Thanks for the response Brittney.
I hear you say that you say that your new chair “looks fancy” and other friends say that their chair is sexy. Can you elaborate on why is looks fancy? Is it because it is shiny with no scratches or wear marks? I’ve also noticed that a couple of friends have added colours to parts of their wheelchairs - such as spokes or parts of the frame. And I’ve noticed that when my posts on Social Media show the wheelchair, less of my followers view the post. Do people have a real negative perception of a chair? I think of a wheelchair as Freedom, Independence, and a Fuller Life.
Take the old chair and leave it at the bottom of your stairs for your laundry room if you don't already have one down there. it would make your life a whole lot easier let me tell you

Hi, Para… I am a new subscriber for a few months, and wondered if any of your used chairs would be available? As I am trying to get a wheelchair, but my insurance declined, as I live in an apartment.
Where do you live?
@@EmpoweredPara I live in Oxford, in Eastern Pennsylvania, close to the borders of Delaware and Maryland, my zip code is 19363.
@@KimonoSkunk I don't think I could get any of my old wheelchairs to you without it costing a lot in freight costs.
@@EmpoweredPara oh ok, well thank you for helping anyhow. I’ll let you know how things work out. ^^ Thank you for being so kind.
@@KimonoSkunk no worries! Good luck!
Hi there. I really wanted to know more about this new chair of yours, so I watched a couple of TH-cam videos. Just barely 8 pounds - wow! Must be easy to wheel. Some described it as a “rigid active” wheelchair. Do you know what that means?
help!! My wheelchair, the seat is 15 "x 15", I want to buy a backrest and I don't know what is the appropriate size to order it, how is the backrest of my wheelchair measured ???
I believe it is ordered the same width as your seat. But that is a question for the vendor that you are ordering from.
I am doing a video in a few weeks all about ordering and sizing wheelchairs and wheelchair components so I will make sure to include this question in that video when I interview the expert!
Hi. what color is the frame?
Silver
Its Polished titanium
Congratulations
Thanks!
thank you for video. i'm using tilite tr and i want to buy rgk ... becuz my tilite's weight is 6kg. how much lighter is rgk sub4 than tilite??
It's guaranteed to be under 4 kg (without the wheels) as long as you are under the weight capacity I believe.

This playlist is all about choosing a new wheelchair and in it I have a video with the top ridig chairs. I talk about weight for both tilite and rgk in that one
Very nice videos. I like very much. Can you show us how you put on high heels and flip flops in a wheelchair? Thank you.
I have a,shoe video already! I don't wear heels though! You csn go find the video I did on shoes if you want!
hello, is it possible to have the real transport weight of your tilight ZR ? thanks
I don't have it anymore:) I lent it to a friend so can't weigh it for you. Sorry!
@@EmpoweredPara ok thanks for answer
Is there any chance you’re still willing to donate your previous chair?
Possibly. Depends on location
@@EmpoweredPara I’m in the US
@@Randomoo7 I have an old Quickie that I would be willing to donate but not my tilite. I need it to use in my basement. The one I would be willing to donate is a quickie XTR that is 16 inches wide. It would cost a few hundred dollars to ship though
Being able to fit into a 14x16 chair, and actually being sized for a 13x16 one, means you are very slim. Do you ever worry about your chair being too narrow in case you gain any weight? Or does that just encourage you to exercise and eat well to maintain your current weight?
I worry more about appropriate daily mobility than gaining weight. I can always get a new chair, can't get new shoulders!
So do you still like your new chair compared to your Tilite?
Yes I love it.
What insurance covers that wheelchair ?
Like coverage for paying for the wheelchair? Or coverage if it gets damaged?
@@EmpoweredPara I’m sorry, is the RGK One of the wheelchairs covered by insurance?
@@louisangel5868 my insurance covered it but it would be something you have to check into with your own insurance company
Take the old chair and leave it at the bottom of your stairs for your laundry room if you don't already have one down there. it would make your life a whole lot easier let me tell you
Yeah I have one down there but I think I will give that one away and use the chair in the video. The chair I have down there now was the one I got at 13 and it is,huge!
@@EmpoweredPara or you can put the big one out in the garage did you have more space out there I'm assuming
@@coltonmorgan3610 not really lol. My garage is,so small!!
@@EmpoweredPara here's the thing to though you know I'm just an old country boy all about resources if you don't know. listen to the song It'll tell you because my entire family is that way.th-cam.com/video/3cQNkIrg-Tk/w-d-xo.html
I really like my side guards that come over my wheels - better clothing protection and I can lean on them.
And Reg is amazing!
♥️
You said every wheelchair has been too big for you...but the one you're in that you were involved in the measuring process is STILL too big.
It is jist slightly bigger than my hips. But not by much. Maybe 1/4 inch on either side.
@@EmpoweredPara it looks bigger than that...I'd say at least half an inch on each side.
It was $11,000????
$11,500. My portion was $8400 after the government portion.
Informative!
🙂
Your hair colour shocked me 🤣.
It was a big change lol. But I don't think I'll ever go back! Too much work!
@@EmpoweredPara but it was essentially just not dying, wasn't it 🤔.
@@morgancalvi6675 yes back to my natural color. Which has turned so dark as I've aged!
@@EmpoweredPara I don't understand how changing it back to it's natural colour was hard work...am I missing something 🤔?
@@morgancalvi6675 no I mean I won't go back to blonde..too.much work.to maintain
Side guards are annoying they keep you from leaning over to grab stuff out of the floor they keep you from getting dressed.to me those things just get in the way.
Yeah I am kinda regretting the high ones!
The lower ones aren’t bad. I’ve noticed they are a lot easier than the higher ones.
@@nygirlinancworld1628 yeah I have low side guards on my old chair and I like them
beautiful but too expensive 6,,000 to 11,000 i prefer ti lite zra 3,000
they are very similar so definitely go with the most cost effective if you have to pay out of pocket
You can get the tiga without the lightweight extras is almost half the price of the Sub4
Do not buy this chair the brackets for the back and adjustments are total crap and will not keep the setting you apply to the chair . This was my worst purchase of an wheelchair in my 34 years of being in one , my suggestion would be a Quickie , Topend or an Perfomaxxx
Thanks for thr feedback! I am happy with mine but it isn't adjustable so I guess I don't have that issue.
@@EmpoweredPara I gather you have an locked backrest and not a folding backrest
@@donbright3328 yes.
@@EmpoweredPara Buy one with a folding backrest then let’s talk but I would stop trying to promote these cheap made chairs with cheap made bolts and screws
@@donbright3328 I'm not promoting it. Merely expressing my experience with them and with the company that helped me measure and purchase the chair I chose. All I can do is be honest about my experience. I do appreciate you leaving your comments though. They are valuable for others to read who may be interested in and RGK. I suggest you make your own TH-cam video to review your chair if you are passionate about letting people know about some of the things you dislike. If you do let me know and I'll link to your video!
You could still go an inch narrower and with your trunk, lose 2 or 3 inches off the back. Why do American OT's script so big!
yeah I know lol. I'm always scared to go too narrow! I'm in Canada.
Hyee mam, I am a paraplegic patient, plz send me old used wheelchair, most kindness of yours 😊
Hi I'm Andy subscriber from the Philippines, I hope you can donate your old wheelchair, I'm also paralyzed. God bless you always.
I am definitely going to try to donate it! Do you mean for me to donate it to the Phillipines?
@@EmpoweredPara Hello, I'm personally interested in your wheelchair, I will truly appreciate if you can donate it to me, if that's okay with you. Just want to have something coming from good person like you. It will really help me motivate to just move forward regardless of my disability. By the way I was paralyzed in February 2017 but until these days depression sometimes still attacks me. Take care and God bless you always.
@@andybernal9690 I am not sure how!I would get it to the Philippines? I can check into freight charges but amassing it would be alot! What size wheelchair do you need?
@@andybernal9690 do they not have resources for helping you to get a wheelchair? Freight is very very expensive. Also sometimes you can get a grant for a wheelchair if you’re in financial hardship. Go to tilite.com and there will be a menu and you’ll pick contact and you can ask if they can help you.
