    In the Port episode of V is for Vino wine show, we tasted this 1863 Vintage Ferreira Port. This is a very old vintage Port wine; 158-years-old at the time a tried it in 2021. This was before blue jeans were invented, and while the US was at Civil War. Port wine can age this long because of it's high alcohol, tannin, sugar, and acid levels. The 1863 vintage is known as a very good one in the Douro Valley, and it was also one of the last vintages that was made with vines pre-phylloxera. There are a few other Port houses other than Ferreira, including Taylor, that have 1863 vintages of their Port that are able to be found. This is a Ruby Port, and was likely aged only a few years in large oak barrels before being transferred to its bottle, where it aged the rest of the time. The cork in this bottle of wine was changed every 20-30 years so it would stay sound and not deteriorate. When you open a very old Port wine like this, you need to decant it, as there will be a lot of sediment in the bottle. This wine experience was very special, and something that only few people in the world get to do. I'm grateful and honored to try this wine, and share the experience with you!

    Very cool. I totally understood you here. I’ve had opportunities to try some vintage Bordeaux’s. Even though some of those wines were on the decline I still cherished the experience and appreciated the fact that the wine was still able to be drunk with enough structure left. Wine is amazing!

      It was super lucky! Also, my birth year was a poor vintage in most places, so this makes up for it haha

    I watched this again and got chills! How generous of Ferreira to share this. Can you explain what the Pharmacy aroma meant?

    • @visforvino
      @visforvino  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! The pharmacy description smells like iodine, almost a salty-metallic smell.

    The cork did not look like an 1863 version. Was it re-corked at some point?

    • @visforvino
      @visforvino  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I chat a bit about this later in the video, as well as in the full episode. They recork every 20-30 years to protect the wine 👍

    I had a 1977 porto a couple week ago. all that was really left was the brandy character. I had the same port around 14 years ago and it was much much better. sometimes things just get too old, and thats what makes it foolish to invest in long long term wines

    • @visforvino
      @visforvino  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it's definitely a gamble. I think a lot of people would say that's the fun of it, but its an expensive hobby! Need to have that perfect combo of year, producer, and luck to have good wine thats this old!
