It's a different genre from K-POP, so there's no need to compare.

    • @Smartguy561
      @Smartguy561 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You mean it's supposed to be. But actually it's Jpop with metal influences. It's the same basic concept, the only difference is the background music. Both have dancers, both have choreographed dance routines. Both involve young teenage girls. It's just repackaged to appeal to a different audience. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to enjoy it, but it's really just the same thing repackaged.

@@Smartguy561 As you may not know, K-pop has been around for the last 20 years. J-pop (Kayo-kyoku) is older than K-pop, its form is not repackaged. Japan is not active in the foreign music market, because it doesn't have to be. Therefore, many foreigners do not know Japanese music.
"J-pop" is a name created by a Japanese radio station in 1989, and it is Japanese-made English. Then, in the late 1990s, Japan began to call it "K-pop" to refer to Korean music.
The music market in Japan and the United States is huge enough to occupy half of the world. In comparison, the Korean market is small. So in the 2000s, K-pop was on sale in the Japanese market. And in the 2010s, K-pop entered the U.S. market.
Babymetal, YMO and Kyu Sakamoto were not created for sale abroad. People who were interested in Japanese music found them and became famous.
      Thank you!

@@YA-fi3ng not true. If you actually research the history of the band, you will see that the basis for the musical style of the band is I'm fact, Jpop. This can be confirmed by googling the band and reading the history of the band you will see that their vocal style is heavily influenced by 1960's Japanese rock and pop. Thank you!

    • @YA-fi3ng

      @@Smartguy561 not true?
Babymetal is produced by a team. The leader of the team was influenced by X-Japan, Seikima II, Animetal, etc. It was born from his idea that it would be interesting to add cute dancers like babies to Japanese metal. Su, Yui, Moa and Mikiko (dance choreographer) didn't know metal until they formed Babymetal. It is thought that it gave birth to a novel style.
      Thank you!

@@YA-fi3ng Go read the history of the band and what the musical influences are. The band member themselves define their music as a blend of Jpop EDM and metal. I apologise for the KPop mention in my original comment that was actually a typo. I meant to say Jpop. (I have the stupid keyboard correction program to thank for the typo.) Sorry for that misunderstanding.

Karate isn't about fighting the bad guy. It's about defeating challenges in your life and yourself and overcoming them. Pretty much all of Babymetal songs are positive like that in one way or another

  • @Kmudaify
    @Kmudaify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +155

The first song, Karate, is the girls fighting their alter selves, which is symbolism for the biggest thing holding you back is yourself.. The theme is never give up, always move forward. The second song, Headbanger, is truly a girl power song. it's about a 15 year old girl discarding the traditional role of a young girl in Japan and attending her first metal concert, with a deeper meaning of "be yourself". You'll find "girl power" and positive themes in almost all Babymetal songs. The video you watched is a concert from 2013 of Su's (lead singer) 16th birthday celebration. The other two girls would have been 15.
I hope you keep looking into Babymetal. They are an island in the world of metal... and music in general. Three young girls who go well out of their way (with support from their management and team) to not be sexualized, presenting a positive image, and carrying a positive message. Each of the girls considers being a role model to other young girls an honor and a responsibility, trying hard to live up to that designation.
,Some of the more "Poppy" songs are Doki Doki Morning. Ilne (pronounced ill-nay, which means so good), Uki-Uki Midnight, Awadama Fever, and Yava. Perhaps the most enabling girl power song is "Megitsune", which carries a very powerful message (despite women sometimes feeling forced to hide behind makeup and smiles, they are bad asses that should not be underestimated). Songs with harder metal influences include Sis Anger and Rondo of Nightmare.

the handsign is supposed to be a fox. closely resembling the normal devil horn metal handsign. as for the meaning of the songs, Karate is about fighting yourself and your inner demons. Headbanger is about growing up and developing your own identity. and all that energy is present in almost all their songs! very much part of what makes them awesome. would recommend Road of resistance as the next babymetal song. and then either Akatsuki or Amore. the last two are solo performances by Suzuka the lead singer, without the two younger ones (Yui and Moa) :)

supposedly the girls were told to do the heavy metal 'horns' sign, but they messed it up and did it this way (fox sign) instead of correcting them the manager decided to call it the 'fox sign' and created a whole 'Fox God' back story ... which if you ever get around to watching one of their live concerts is a major theme throughout the show.

I can add two more: Ijime, dame, zetai is about bullying and to not let it get to you and to bystanders to take responsibility. Gimme chocolat is about liking to eat sweets and not worry too much about becoming a bit chubby (not fat, as that's something entirely different). Although this is more in relation to the Japanese culture, it applies to everyone.

You can definitely work out on Babymetal, they have concerts up to 1.5 hours without pausing ! Not sure how they do it. They most have so much energy ! As you can see the audience also gets a great workout too.

Hi there, I really liked this video and look forward to you delving more into Babymetal and the different styles of metal. I think there is so much wonder and surprise to be gained exploring metal music.
Babymetal is a much more beginner friendly band for metal than Behemoth or Cannibal Corpse. Also, it doesn’t help that the graphic nature of the videos can’t be anything but a bit distracting from the experience of the song. I love those bands, but it definitely took time for me to appreciate their sounds. They were very much an acquired taste for me over time.
Also I can relate to what you mentioned in the second video about there being a lot of sounds in the middle of song. When the guitarist started soloing a little bit, you said it was a little bit ruining of the experience. It’s okay for the sounds to impact people that way when starting with metal. There’s a density and thickness to the instrumentation that takes time for ears to become accustomed to, everything sounds a bit chaotic at first. But over time ears will pick up on and appreciate what the instruments are doing, things will start to sound clearer.
More Babymetal- definitely Road of Resistance live
For a band to explore after Babymetal, let’s see, try:
Nightwish- Ghost Love Score @ Buenos Aires
    Devin Townsend- Kingdom EMGTV performance
Iron Maiden- Hallowed Be Thy Name live
    Metallica- One
Keep up the good work, take care

autohmae I like your idea. Really hoping Giddy’s next dive into Babymetal includes the Road of Resistance live video. The united audience during the “whoa-oh-whoa-ohs” is really cool to experience. And the guitar is pretty catchy with some shreddy parts that are a bit more beginner friendly to the ear, less chaotic sounding

There are certainly Kpop groups that ave more talemt than just dancing. Most are pretty "fabricated" but i suggest dreamcatcher, they are a girl group that has a more dark concept and their musical style reminds me of jrock (but in korean). They also contribute to the lyrics (and are fans of babymetal). Im sure its annoying, but i would also recommend bts. The write and produce their own music, and have pretty amazing vocal and rap talents. Most people stereotype them, but the rock version of fake love is pretty dope. And their lyrics are about self love, criticizing society and so on.

Great video (yes, I'm watching all your reaction videos).
And if you wonder about the diference between death metal, black metal and blackened death metal...
Well, death metal usually is really fast (with very quicky tempos), and the guitars are tuned low. The quality of the sound is good. The voices are deep, brutal and low (that kind of voice is called "growl"). And the lyrics usually are about death, darkness, gore, murder, etc. There are a few bands (like Death) that talk about phillosophy. Is a really brutal a music
The black metal is darker, but less brutal. Usually the tempos are slower than in the death metal, and the sound quality is worse. And that is used for many bands to create a dark atmosphere. The voices are high pitched (a kind of scream called "shriek", but some bands uses growls but in a hugher pitch than in the death metal). And the lyrics are usually about death, satanism (usually made like a way to protest aganist the cristianity), protest aganist religion, the forest, the ancient escandinavian culture, and even some bands (like Immortal) talk about fantasy
And the blackened death metal is a combination of both. Is death metal with some black metal elements. (Behemot is a great example. Is brutal, but is athmospheric and the lirycs are more similar to the black metal lyrics. But the music is more similar to the death metal
Ps: sorry for my bad english. In my country we talk in spanish
    Pps: I love your pronunciation

Baby Metal impresses me. Those girls either know their Metal Roots, or are being taught Metal Roots in the process. The "Puppy" as you've referred to it, is something that was brought forth by Ronnie James Dio. It's from Italy. It's called Catching the Evil Eye. A hand sign that is to ward away negative energy. One of their other videos, I feel, is a tribute to the Soul of Metal as well as a tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio. RIP Ronnie.

skål dear Rana! Sorry for not seeing this earlier :)
    Great reaction!
I had a feeling you would like them :) That's awesome!
Well, Babymetal are far... Err, very far ;) From my taste... But I think that they are doing great in combining distortion and metal riffs with Japanese pop. They call it "cute metal"... Well, I can't deny that they are cute indeed! And yes, they are perfect for anime themes :)
They are a bit older now, 18-20 years old, but they started when they were very young... And they are still going :)
5:04 Indeed, you're an angel, may there be no doubts about that (!) They should save a place for you in their band!
*My suggestions for the next metal songs ;) And a bit of lore about the "metal sign"*
I'll give two of them (Plus another one afterwards), if that ok. One is a classic and a must fist step in metal in genral... And the second is from a later style, which I think you might LOVE:
    1. Iron Maiden, "Hallowed by thy name".
    th-cam.com/video/71TJitXU8Z0/w-d-xo.html
I think you may really love Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name". They are one of the most important metal bands in general and this is one of their classic songs. They play "heavy metal", which means that it's not heavy :) At least not compared to the death metal you've heard... They have the clean vocal of one of the greatest singer of all time, Bruce Dickinson and the pace and riffs are all very easy for anyone to listen to. Even today, I can never have enough of Maiden...
So, to sum my nonsensical ranting...I think that this is a great song to listen too in general and especially when you want a first taste of "Metal" :)
    2. Nightwish, "Sleeping Sun". (It's their softest song, but also one of their best :).
    th-cam.com/video/zfPWU6CJ3vY/w-d-xo.html
Nightwish are a *symphonic metal* band, the greatest in their genre perhaps. They are one of the founders of it, really. They started with Tarja Turunen (aka "The syren"), as their singer and her unique soprano voice, gave them a very distinctive sound. To this day, their time with Tarja puts them as special among all other bands in their genre... Essentially since most of their songs were written for Tarja's voice and to her, *personally*...
They combine metal with symphony elements. They have "heavy" songs and soft songs and many ballads.
Sadly, the way it ended between them and Tarja in 2005 is one of the greatest dramas in the history of metal... :\ But nonetheless, their times together was magic that happens once in a life time. If even I, as a huge black/death metal fan can love their songs, that says something :)
6:25 Btw, that "devil horns" sign \m/, was "invented" by Ronnie James Dio (Rest in peace brother!), when he joined Black Sabbath. He is one of the fathers of metal... Ozzy Osbourne, the original singer of the band (Before he went solo), used to point one finger up during shows. Ronnie didn't want to copy him, so instead he made this "devil" sign, which he burrowed from his family really: They are of Italian origins and they used this sign to ward off "bad spirits". So he used it and thanks to him, the "devil horns" are THE symbol of all metal that there is. His voice is the stuff of legends and his contribution to metal in general is nothing short of a miracle.
The only thing that was greater than his talent were his good deeds, which are too numerous to count. Especially his help to children who lived on the streets. He was really an angel with one of the most loving hearts one can find :|
So for his honor, here is my third suggestion:
    3. Dio, "Rainbow in the Dark".
    th-cam.com/video/hZnfbd_BGw8/w-d-xo.html
Of his first solo album (He was 40 at the time. And yes, his voice was as perfect as if he was 20). He played "heavy metal" as well, so don't worry about it being scary or something :) I think that the song captures his style, voice and personality very well, so this is my suggestion :)

Did you know one of Babymetal's backstories is that Babymetal exist to make metal popular again in Japan and more importantly it seems to be working: th-cam.com/video/X5370G4FJ30/w-d-xo.htmlm14s This probably means Babymetal songs are also written to allow people from outside of metal to enjoy it and get into it. This I think is also why Babymetal was suggested.

Not sure if you were recommended those videos or a chance selection? However you chose these two videos, they are an excellent choice. The music video for 'Karate' is a song from their second CD. Headbanger is from the first CD and they are using the live band (Kami band) at this stage as opposed to the skeleton band (Mr Bones) who mimed playing the instruments.
Their earlier music videos were made when they were much younger and are songs from their first CD. The early music videos, although very cute (kawaii) do not offer a good representation of their live shows.
Many first time reactors to BabyMetal, look at the official video for Gimmie Chocolate (it gets chosen because of the high view numbers) think it is gimmicky, take a look and react to another early music video and write them off as a manufactured gimmick.
Somehow, you managed to get both videos passed the Copyright block. A word of warning, many BabyMetal videos get a worldwide block. The person reacting does the video in video option, as you have done here and after a while, TH-cam blocks them or cuts the audio of the song.
There are many BabyMetal songs which are more on the 'poppy' side which may appeal to you more? Here are a couple of links for you to look at and react if you wish.
'Doki Doki Morning' a earlier live performance with the skeleton band: th-cam.com/video/_KZ-iIsx2Qk/w-d-xo.html
'Awadama Fever' a live performance with the Kami Band and some on screen translation: www.dailymotion.com/video/x4c5v4j
Congratulations on making a good effort to stop using the word 'like'. A very difficult habit to break especially when friends and family use it ad infinitum.

Loved your reactions. I've seen several "How ? respond to Babymetal" and am always disappointed that "Road To Resistance" isn't included because it is a masterpiece. From the song to the flawless choreography. From the directing to the editing. From the Morgue Metal band (with the scary good drummer and guitarist) to the pyro. It is unlike anything I've ever tubed. A blogger made a vid of Japanese people reactioning to Babymetal, they were all lukewarm. Most hadn't heard of them and one guy said Japanese metal wouldn't succeed in Japan. Well Babymetal plays in large sold out venues. So it seems half of Japan knows them and it seems they're doing just fine.

Well, not sure specifically about crucifixion in case of Babymetal, my guess is it's an homage to what other metal bands do. But as I understand it in stories in Japan rebirth is used to signify a new phase in life. In case of Su-metal, the main singer, she was turning 16, it was a birthday concert and a new phase in life.
