      For those having a sharp ear, if you can hear closely, Sauron recited the part of the funeral hymn in elvish and then added the black speech of the one ring. To be specific:
      "Silivren penna miriel
      o menal aglar elenath..."
      (White-glittering, slanting falls, sparkling like jewels
      from the firmament the glory of the starry host...)
      "Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul"
      (And the darkness bind them)
      So, yeah. What Sauron did was a mockery, in a sense.

    The palantir is so scary. Gandalf accidentally puts his hand on it when trying to cover it with a cloth, and recoils when he glimpses the Eye... Saruman had it but didn’t actually touch it, he just hovered his hand over it... Pippin picks it up out of temptation and then horrifically can’t let go, screaming in pain.
    Only Aragorn is able to hold it, bare handed, and stare at it directly without recoiling, meeting Sauron's gaze... Now that’s strength.

    The point of this was to goad Sauron into believing Gondor led by their fancy new King had grown overconfident and decided to foolishly attack Sauron head on when really they just wanted to by Frodo time and a clear path. Altogether mission accomplished. Love the scene.

      It was also to make Sauron think Aragorn had the ring and was corrupted by it, making him believe that he could take Sauron on. So Sauron stopped looking for it since he thought Aragorn was about to bring it to him.

    • @Ruosteinenknight
      @Ruosteinenknight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +361

      It has "Deceiver is being deceived" factor. Despite possessing more power than any being in middle-earth, Sauron's greatest achievements are not won trough strength but deception. Aside from that trickery with the rings, he managed to destroy the greatest empire race of man had ever forged by simply using his wits. Irony is massively strong here.
      Everyone hopes that Silmarillion gets adapted to big screen, but you know what I'd want to see? Akallabêth adapted into a movie. It probably would be very depressing movie in a sense, that it would detail how Sauron corrupted and deceived Numenor into destroying itself, but it would really expand Sauron's character and show us why he was such a feared force of evil.

It's not magic and it has no powers, but it belonged to Beren who cut a Silmaril out of the crown of Morgoth (Sauron's boss), so it is probably the most badass piece of jewellery in Middle Earth.

    Fun fact: The quick glimpse of Sauron holding the other Palantír is proof that at this time of the trilogy, he had reconstructed his physical form and was not simply just a flaming eye. This is further proven with the cut scene of Sauron facing Aragorn in direct combat at the Black Gate.
    Of course, Sauron always had a physical form in the book, but it's cool to think he also had a physical form at some point near the end of the trilogy.

      Perhaps my biggest peeve with the movies (which I love, don't get me wrong) is that Peter Jackson took Tolkien's "Eye of Sauron" metaphor way, way too literally. As vague as Tolkien was on Sauron's appearance, he makes it clear he did exist as a physical entity in Lord of the Rings.

    • @maxmcqueen1196
      @maxmcqueen1196 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @Sean Forrest Sure, but the audience wouldn't have known what exactly the 'Eye of Sauron' was unless explained in great, great detail, which would've been way too heavy on exposition. PJ's solution was sort of a cop-out, I guess, but a necessary one.
      I agree with you on Sauron's physical form, though. They shouldn't have changed that for the films.

    This scene is a lot deeper than you might think. It completely shows Sauron's evil in an amazing but terrifying way. The second Aragorn picks up the Palantir, Sauron begins saying an elvish hymn in a mocking way. He is basically mocking the races he hates the most, the Elves and Men and the dissolved alliance they once had. He is showing that in many ways, that they have failed. The first thing that can make Aragorn loose hope. Then he attacks Aragorn's emotions directly by showing him his worst fear, Arwen's death and making it seem like it was Aragorn's fault. This is how Sauron is the most evil being in Middle Earth, even more so than Morgoth in my opinion. Morgoth is more powerful yes but Sauron uses his power to destroy someone's emotions so that they loose all hope and turn to nothing from their anxiety and even depression you can say. He uses fear for his benefit. This directly ties into the Ring and the power that it has. Such an amazing villain and very similar to Satan or a Devil of some kind.

      In the book Sauron cannot manipulate Aragorn with the Palantir because is his by right, a spirit like Sauron could manipulate with the Palantir someone with lesser will except those who has the right upon it, like Aragorn, for being heir of Isildur and Anarion.

    • @taelorpickel2830
      @taelorpickel2830 5 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Morgoth made everything evil in the world...without him Sauron wouldn't have such terrifying powers. Emotions,wills and all have been destroyed by Morgoth before, Beren and Luthien once got frightened to the utter brim by Morgoth awakening from Beren's sleeping spell dance thing. First age elves were nigh-fearless,but there has been times that even the strongest of wills will break from Morgoth's presence.
      Morgoth is the Satan of Tolkien's world...his mere presence makes people lose hope. Hence those are the reasons why Morgoth is more evil in general lore and standards than Sauron ever will be. Sauron deceives people and makes them lose hope yes, but Morgoth's focus on sheer destruction,wrath and a change of the matter of Arda into his own image is evil enough as he plans on making Arda into an incarnation of hell itself..such evil plaguing the world that even Saruon taking over Middle Earth would be mere in terror and evil.
      Morgoth forged evil and corruption in the world, so by definition he is more evil than Sauron. And his goals are massively more evil and terrifying than his servants, I mean Sauron would form Middle Earth into ash,flame and lava...but Morgoth would make it into an empty place of ruin,endless flame,ash,and hellish premise spread across the world.

    There were 7 palantirs brought from Numenor by Elendil. 4 of them were originally placed in Gondor, and 3 in Arnor. The ones in Gondor were placed at Minas Anor (later minas tirith), Osgiliath, Minas Ithil (later minas morgul) and Orthanc (isengard). The ones in Arnor were placed at Annuminas, Amon Sul (weathertop) and Tower-hills near Grey Heavens.
    Not all stones were similar. While the stones of Orthanc, Minas Anor, Minas Ithil and Annuminas were small and could communicate with another stone, The Stone of Osgiliath was the leader-stone, bigger (couldnt be moved by 1 man) and could talk with ALL palantirs at once. The Stone of Weathertop was also big and supposedly the 2-nd most powerful (thats why the 3 split kingdoms of Arnor fought a civil war, to control this stone on weathertop). The stone at the Tower hills was different and could not communicate with the others. It was always looking to the West towards the Valinor and Tol Eressea. This one was called the stone of Elendil, he used it to look towards the west.
    Out of these stones, 3 were still known about in the age where the book happens. Isengard palantir, Minas tirith palantir and Tower Hills palantir near the elf havens. But Gandalf tells Pippin that Sauron must have found at least one of the other ones, otherwise he couldn't have communicated with Saruman or Denethor. He believes Sauron used the Ithil-stone, because he conquered that city about 1000 years before the events of lotr. The stone of Osgiliath was most likely lost in the waters of Anduin when Osgiliath was burned during the Kin-strife (if my memory serves me well). The stones of Annuminas and Amon-Sul (weathertop) were at the bottom of the sea in the ice-bay of Forochel. The ship that came to rescue Arvedui, the last king of Arnor, sank because of the ice there. Thats how Arvedui died and how the stones were lost (he had them with him when he fled from the defeat at Fornost in 1974 T.A. - which ended the Arnor kingdom)
    There is another stone that is not a palantir but it's worth mentioning (also brought to middle-earth by Elendil from Numenor). Its the stone of Erech, were Aragorn calls forth the mountain-dead-folk to fulfill their oath. It was very big and similar looking to the Palantirs, although it's not said if it had any powers. (although it suspect it was because of this stone Isildur could curse the traitors of the mountain)
    In this scene it looks like Aragorn is using the Minas Anor stone, but in the books it was the Orthanc scene. He also hold up better in the books, here it looks like Aragorn is frightened by that vision. It is a pretty nice scene nevertheless.

But because he is a beautiful angel and it’s hard to tell the difference between an angel of God and those who are fallen. Lucifer is the most beautiful of the angels, therefore humans can easily mistake him of being sent from God. People need to stop giving this idea that Lucifer is some ugly red beast with horns. Or that he is just ugly and dark full of shadow. He isn’t that is why, he can easily deceive others; because he is far from the most ugliest being.

    I choose to believe Sauron isn't just a magical eye, but rather, the eye is his "looking glass" into the world.
    The black iris is a closed gateway into the void, and Sauron stands on precipice, pulling the strings of his puppets.
    You can sort of see this when he draws the Palantír's view of the eye closer with the motion of his hand at 0:46.
    Inside his little pocket-dimension where his essence is, he can conjure all kinds of visions to communicate with the Palantír user.
    Also, when Sauron tells Frodo: "There is no life inside the void... Only death." I think this is how he finds the ring so easily (over time) when someone uses it.
    While wearing the ring, part of your essence is brought into the void (making you invisible) but if you are alive, you create a big contrast by being alive inside of the void.
    It makes you stand out quite a bit I imagine.

      Yes, but remember the more powerful a person is the more they have to be cautious with power in general. Gandalf recoils from the Palantir not because he can't handle it, but because he is so powerful that the thought of him being tempted by Sauron through it terrifies him, and he won't mess with that. He has the same exact attitude towards the Ring at the beginning of the first film, he barely touches it to see what it is when it's on the floor of Bag End, senses Sauron, and then immediately lifts his hand and never touches it again.
      Aragorn is extremely powerful, for a mortal man, but has less to fear overall than Gandalf. I will say thought that in the book this happened in an even more badass way. Aragorn actually won this confrontation and pulled the Palantir out from Sauron's influence.

    One of the things I like about this, despite how the rest of the film depicts Sauron, is that it gives a nod to how he is in the books. In the movies he's a big suspended eyeball on top of Barad-Dur, which is not in the books. In the books he has once again taken his physical form.
    In this scene just before we see Arwen in the Palantir, we see an image of Sauron armoured and holding his own Palantir up as he battles with Aragorn.

    The fact that when Sauron sees the sword, for a moment shows his true (physical) self, instead of the eye. This tells me that his fear and surprise made him lose the illusion of "the eye" for just one second, thus confirming the eye is just an illusion and the real sauron is a person (for lack of a better word) holding a Palantir 24/7.

      Guys, I get that you hate this change, but you really gotta accept that Sauron in Peter Jackson’s version is JUST the Eye.
      You think because he saw a split second of his old body holding the palantir that must mean that’s actually him holding it?
      He also showed a vision of a dead Arwen, and all know that was a lie. Him holding the palantir was just a vision signifying that he ALSO has a palantir (as in “two can play this game, Aragorn”)
      Don’t believe me? Look at his hand. How many fingers are on it? If that’s his actual body, why aren’t any of his fingers missing?
      Also, if you could, explain to me why book purists despise this change so much, despite the fact that you cannot have your villain cower in his fortress and NEVER show himself for three straight movies? Cause that’s not how film works.

    • @oblivionronin
      @oblivionronin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Arander92 Well first, Sauron Body is completely destroyed when he is separated from the ring, so if he has corporial form, this is most likely a new body so the fingers would be regrown most likely. Seeing as he is a demi-god who can regrow his complete body, im fairly sure regrowing a couple fingers is well within his power, so that last argument is kinda weak.
      But i do agree that Sauron is most likely only the eye in Peter Jackson's interpretation, i always looked at it this way: Sauron binded himself to the ring; his spirit dwells middle earth because the ring is still present, but to regain his corporial form, he needs to physically have it.

      So true. To quote my favorite part from the book, where Gimli and Legolas are talking about Aragorn post-battle of Pelennor:
      'Ere that dark day ended none of the enemy were left to resist us all were drowned,
      or were flying south in the hope to find their own lands upon foot. Strange and
      wonderful I thought it that the designs of Mordor should be overthrown by such
      wraiths of fear and darkness. With its own weapons was it worsted!'
      'Strange indeed,' said Legolas. 'In that hour I looked on Aragorn and thought how
      great and terrible a Lord he might have become in the strength of his will, had he
      taken the Ring to himself. Not for naught does Mordor fear him. But nobler is his
      spirit than the understanding of Sauron; for is he not of the children of Lúthien?
      Never shall that line fail, though the years may lengthen beyond count.'
      From that, I always interpreted that to mean he could have very well been even more terrifying than Sauron in terms of using his indomitable will to tame what was within his right to have. And more, if he let the ring's evil ambitions run their course.

      +14Schofield I respectfully disagree. Aragorn's entire character arc is a story of him rejecting or not following his destiny and finally accepting it and of Gondor (the stewards) rejection of claims by Kings of Arnor to the throne of Gondor. Sadly while many parts of this movie trilogy are unbelievably good, these parts were not done well. There are three big steps to the first part in the books: Aragorn having the sword reforged when settling out from Rivendell, Aragorn challenging Eomer and his entire Eored' during the chase in book 2, and finally him taking the Palintir and not only using it but showing the sword reforged to Sauron and then breaking Sauron's will and claiming full control of it and using it showing his superiority to the Stewards. Those three key moments were done differently and in the last two cases "wrong." But no one is paying ME to make movies...LOL oh, and Gandalf losing his staff to the WitchKing.... ugh.

      14Schofield I thought the point of this scene was to trick Sauron into thinking they were ready for war at the gate. They needed a distraction for Frodo, remember? Watch the end of the scene before this one.

      Then people wouldn't just assume that Sauron was just an eye the whole time.

    0:49 the only time in the trilogy other than the prologue where we actually see Sauron take physical form.

      VideosNoOne then why didn’t he leave his tower and fight the combined armies of the west?

      @@willcc19-18 Because Sauron isn't much of a fighter. He is more of a schemer who likes to manipulate others to do his bidding. People who don't read the books kinda get a wrong picture of him based on the first minutes of the first film. Actually they sieged his tower for 17 years before he came out and fought and that is when he still had the ring. Now he doesn't posess the ring and is not nearly as powerful so he won't come down himself. And why should he? The combined armies in the end were so much smaller than the armies of Mordor and seemed desperate. He just stayed back and waited for victory.

      VideosNoOne yea I guess that would’ve played into Aragorn’s hand. Although how did Sauron gain physical form without the ring?

      @@willcc19-18 He doesn't need the ring to get a physical form per se. It just means that because his powers are in it and it still habits middle earth he can regain his former glory. It is just a concentration of Saurons powers. He has lost his physical body before. He does not need the ring to do it.
