Let the double begin. But seriously, we still don't know if Jonas is coming or not, I just saw an article and Visma hopes to be "competitive" not "fighting", whatever that means. It's too bad, this was going to be the year for a head to head battle where both Pogi and Jonas were going to be at full strength. Oh well it's bike racing, and crashes happen. The battle for the podium may be something to watch. I love how it's not ending in Paris and ends with a TT, fun stuff.
Predicted Pidcock descent-fests never gonna happen. The final descent is less than 10k with 5 hairpins on pretty nicel-looking roads and then 10 flat kilometers to the finish. Even if he can squeeze out 10 seconds there, that's not even worth trying, imo...
Very weather dependent especially at the start and I don't think Pog will be inclined to go very deep on the very first stage so probably a non GC favorite.
I don’t like such opening week. We need 6 stages flat to give sprinters a chance to wear yellow. That’s how the tour used to be Such tough climbs stage 1. Vingegaard cd lose 45 sec to 4 min on day one! V won’t have his legs, fully, till approx stage 10. He has to stay w i approx 3:15 of pogacar first 10 stages. Then he can start coming back in the high mtn stages, esp if the days are hot ones P must attack all first 9 stages. Esp stage 1. Get time early on V might find his legs by stage 10 and start to come back. It cd be x close win by v or by p. If so x pressure nice tt stage 21, crashes there if tight race. V might start to come back stages 11-21. Even if he does he doesn’t have the miles in his legs from training. V is at risk stages 11-21 to be Findlay in great shape, but w o the training, cramping up, esp on hot days, and cramping up severely. That’s what happens w o proper foundation-cramps
@Sir_Winston_Smith some less exciting races are needed to make the exciting ones exciting. a constant stream of excitement gets boring to hte human psyche
I have mixed feelings on this one. It pretty much determines the small group of riders who will win on Day 1. I prefer that the sprinters and all rounders have a party in week 1, then the real work begins in work 2.
I'll put money on Michael Matthews for this - this stage is suited to his high VO2max for the shorter less steep climbs with no fatigue power loss on his finishing kick in the final select bunch.
Mathews is pure class and can deliver on the biggest stages..be up against pidcock with the desent if they can survive the climbs with uae and there team of monsters.
Cycling heaven. Barbotto is a great climb but I think a reasonable group will fight it out at the finish unless Pogacar gropes for it on Barbotto and solos to the finish
Totally agree it's become a farce, this stage is pointless risking riders and teams efforts in the first stage. Half the tour might not even make it back to France.
