Mike you do an EXCELLENT job of covering our Hobby. It's not only informative but entertaining. Thumbs up 🍻💯
@@iNeverHadMercy thank you so much!!
My buddy Chris and I did our annual rip. Cracked a 1990 Simpsons BBCE sealed box and a box of TGIF cards from the same era, half-jokingly chasing Bart and Balki and Urkel gem rookies. All nostalgia, zero glittery garbage, zero buyer's remorse.
@@KipArmadillo that’s awesome. Now I want all of those cards
@@JunkWaxHero Low pop! We'll create the market!
@@KipArmadillo $1,000 for a Balki rookie card. I know what I have.
@JunkWaxHero 🤣🤣🤣
“THIS IS A CARTOON” - George Costanza 😂😂😂
lol classic
Anything with a Seinfeld reference is a great video for me😂. Thanks for the video! How you find all this news every week is amazing!
I own Topps baseball cards from every year back to 1951 and I can honestly say the 1990 Topps design is in my top 10 favorite. Yes, I was a kid when they were released, but the design fits the 90’s so perfectly!
Yes!
25 Topps should have no name on front short prints. That would be cool.
That’s a great idea!
16:40 just seeing the photo of those breakers makes me cringe lol
I did my annual rip, too, last week. I opened 12 boxes of various sizes. I pulled zero autos 😕 So with the eBay gift cards I received for Christmas, I bought 5 autos. The moral of the story is to buy singles, you guys.
@@BZARZAGZA 100%
@@BZARZAGZA spot on man! Most of the cards people chase (beyond the monsters) are the same or cheaper than buying two boxes to a case.
And yet some fools are spending $800 or more on Jumbo Chrome Update boxes. The Skenes 101 will not go to an average collector. Likely it'll go to a big breaker. I rarely open any wax anymore. I leave at sealed
Curious what boxes did you open?
George needed himself removed from photo buy shop guy removed Krueger instead . Told George “wow you have lost a lot of hair” George replied “I’m aware” lmao . So the guy draws Krueger back in . Comedy gold
I loved coverage of the Topp’s T-shirt air-brushing that Kyle started. I picked up various Fox T-shirt cards. I also have no idea why they’re doing it
It is a mystery!
Thank you for the info. Have a good day. Happy new year!
@@Vintage_Dave_T you too Dave!
1990 is nostalgic for me, too -- the Topps and Donruss designs that year, coupled with all the new brands -- and graduating from high school (lol) -- all but completed a gradual goodbye to cards. 1991 Topps (actually among my favorite Topps designs) was a brief respite, but after that I was out for almost 30 years. Impossible to know for sure, but I don't think I'd be enjoying my hobby journey today if I hadn't been out of it for so long.
I agree! I was mostly out for 25 years and enjoy it so much now
7:28 OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me and my other buddy who has a store on eBay talk about this all the time. So tired of "sometime sellers" giving away high value low print run cards because they don't know what they have and then others listing $10 cards for $100 because they think that is what it's worth. Going round and round with someone with a 2022 Prizm Fearless Yordan Alvarez insert.
Hi Mike. Happy new year. That Ricky Henderson card is pretty cool. I would be curious how much it sells for. Have a great week.
@@5714Collector thanks Jim! Happy new year!
Kyle Yerkes did a great job of calling out Fanatics Chrome!!!!!!
Speaking of image variations, as a Sox fan you might appreciate the fact that for in Stadium Club this year, David Ortiz’ paper cards show him celebrating the 2013 ALCS with his Mike Napoli tribute tshirt on. For some reason, they airbrushed out the shirt image on the Chrome versions of the cards (there’s a pic of this on my IG page on December 11, same user handle)
As for the Bonds auto, my issue with the Pirates auto mockup is that it’s the 1990 Topps design but they clearly used a 1986 picture as it was the only year Bonds wore number 7. Again, why?
Always love this weekly video ... Happy New Year!
@@sfosoxfan good catches! Using your Ortiz example in my newsletter.
@@JunkWaxHero Very cool, thanks!!
Love the content
I also was 11 in 1991 when that iconic Topps set came out!
Great stuff
I have no problem with unlicensed stuff it's just not for me, but this just looks horrible. Basketball is always the worst anyways without team names and logos. It looks like what you wore in 8th grade gym class. The undershirt thing is just weird though.
Topps needs to hire an official card/pack/box shuffler, because they do a terrible job randomizing the coalitions and hits within boxes and cases It's great if you get the Shohei case, but most likely you end up with the Bob Hamelin case.
This is Bob Hamelin slander! 😂
Good stuff Mike! I don't feel bad for Geoff Wilson! Haha. Gotta love crazy eBay sellers sometimes. They could be doing a ton with that Langford card
@@warrendinCLE 😂😂 I don’t feel bad for him either
I’d rather hold the bag for a national champion QB over these insane baseball prospectors holding the bag for a bunch of random prospects that may not make AA.

As a White Sox fan, I am both impressed and alarmed at that Luis Robert collection. I hope for that collector's sake (and my own) that Robert turns things around and rakes this year!
With his poor plate discipline I’m not sure he can
His bat looked super slow this past season. Swung through fastballs right down the pipe every at bat.
@@mcpw1818 not good!
I know exactly how the John Elway auto got missed.
He signed the first one of the five then said "F*&% it!" 🤣😉
@@dannyb.3924 lol
It doesn't really matter where the hits are located, if the "Little Guy" can't afford the wax in the first place. Baseball is a great example of spreading the hits out. You can hit 99% of everything in Retail vs hobby in Flagship and Chrome. The problem for the "Little Guy" is that if the product gets popular, the affordable wax is eaten up and made unaffordable. Topps update and Chrome Update this year are impossible to find for retail, and is selling for double by "Online Retailers" like SCC, Blowout, D&A.
In store at GameStop they have 23-24 Prizm basketball hangers for $44. When big box stores are holding and selling products for the secondary market prices it is a problem.

My take away from your comments today is the importance of establishing trust and relationships in our hobby. People like you encourage renewed interest and confident optimism in the vast space occupied by the sport collectables. 🇨🇦❤️
@@kellycook5314 that means a ton to me. Thank you!
Good coverage of so many topics, Mike. How the heck do you do it? By the way, I’m one of “the little guys” , but I’m not left out. I just don’t rip. When I have, it a box from my LCS. I buy the singles I want and remain happy.
Same here, Ken. Thanks for watching!
Love your content Mike, no fluff at all. That JJ McCarthy, a guy who hasn't played a single snap in the NFL, but yeah an ultra modern card going to sell for probably 10k? Utterly ridiculous - I'd much rather have a high grade Hank Aaron RC or high grade 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle myself.
Thank you! It’s crazy how some players get hyped so early.
100% agree with trading in the MVP buybacks to acquire a Jackie Robinson... The only counterpoint would be... How much $$$ did all the chrome cost to pull enough buyback capital?
Granted you get other cards besides Judge and Ohtani, but I would probably go right for Jackie and skip the Chrome boxes.
I will say the buyback program is great for this exact exchange, if you're going to drop hundreds or thousands on boxes, a 53 Robinson is the kind of return on investment I can understand!
A lot of people factor in the “thrill of the chase” into their return on investment
@@JunkWaxHero absolutely and I have done the same (ripped boxes for the thrill) from time to time. The hobby is vast and varied, there's really no wrong way to do it.
(Except for those Topps photoshopped undershirts)
Those airbrushed cards of the 1st guy was just wong!!!!!!
They should also make an insert of the president with crazy odds like the 1990 Bush card.
@@Axceis yes!
What product did you open at the card shop? 1980 Topps baseball are hard to get 10’s with the type of paper and printing process.
Why would Topps be adding t-shirts to basketball players? Doesn’t make any sense.
I opened a brand new tennis product. Video tomorrow!
It could be that these cards (ie Ricky 1980- or any popular player at time) were handled more by collectors....
But contrary maybe the more popular players were better taken care of...
Low pop rates are peculiar with these big cards...but possibly they were just passed around more....pop protection would also seem to be a valid argument
PSA has a really good explanation for why it rarely gems. It’s in my newsletter today.
2:45 😂😂😂
Too bad the Bonds autograph doesn't come up with a special inscription. I am not going to say what I think that should be, lol. Congrats on 11 thousand subscribers. That means another live-stream! I think.
Sunday evening! Thanks Andrew!
@@JunkWaxHero Hope to see you then
@@ACD1994 you too! You’re the MVC (most valuable commenter)
The card industry in general is heading for a big correction! Love all the Rickey cards 👍🏻
So, by correction, you means cards are going to start going up or cards are continue going down? Either way, interesting thought…….
1) JJ McCarthy the next Tom Brady? Who knows. Lots of mediocre QB's in college have had great NFL careers (Brett Favre anyone?). Pretty sure Tom Brady didn't know he was going to be the next Tom Brady. Also could be a collector who's not speculating and just had to have the JJ card for their PC and didn't care how much they spent.
2) PSA comic book pressing. Will it be noted on the label? Seems there would a collectibility ($$$) difference on say a 9.6 noted as pressed versus a 9.6 that's not.
Great video, as always!
@@in2rock275 good question about the labels!
Does anyone that hits a big card keep it? If not, are they card collectors? Or just gamblers buying boxes for big hits? As a collector if I got a huge 1/1 hit I am keeping it, would you?
I sell almost nothing, but if I got a huge 2024 hit I’d sell it immediately. The value will almost surely plummet and you can buy it back much cheaper later on.
The guy who sold the Ohtani won't double his money after taxes, which I would assume would be quite a bit. As for '90 Topps, I have a love/hate relationship with them. I was a kid when those came out and now I look at them sometimes and I get a warm and fuzzy feeling, and other times I don't like them. I think it has a lot to do with which cards and color combos I am looking at.
Auburn35 is the King of Hobby Watchdogs. You should do an interview with him.
@@DansVintageBaseballPC I don’t think he shows his face anywhere
Nothing wrong with the 1990 design, Mike, the 1989 and 1985 set the bar much, much higher with "mailed in" designs...
I love 1989 too!
Hah!, that's what makes it such a great hobby, there's something for everybody...
The more i see and hear about fanatics screwing up simple things makes me more and more concerned when they receive the licenses to produce all the cards. The airbrush jobs on the non licensed stuff is terrible. My 3rd grade niece could do a better job. Then all the screwups on holiday orders?
@@cdubsportscards yup
We know all we need to know about Jeff backing out of a deal. Are we surprised? Nope. I hope the Ohtani goes to a zillion dollars and Jeff could have had it for 100 grand……LESS GOOOOO!!!!!
Undershirt SP's 😂 only a newb on here could say 1990 topps was the worst set ever when they weren't even alive yet or collected when the 1991 fleer came out 🙄 Auctions don't work that way its not an automatic 100k maybe 80 after fees
1991 was in my peak collecting years and even I have zero nostalgia for it. Hideous.
@ haha that was literally peak from the 90s junk dynasty
I am disappointed in your lack of recognizing modern technology and so brazenly not using bluetooth earbuds. You made a conscious choice to display headphones that use a WIRE that connects to your computer. May Skynet have mercy on you.
lol thanks
I chuckle at people getting bent out of shape about what other people pay for cards. $5000 might be a drop in the ocean for whoever bought it. Its worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That's called participating in a free market.
My man probably could have bought a PSA 5 Jackie for what he spent to get the Buybacks for a PSA 1.
