I have a zd30 ute and there is a couple things I can offer from my experience. Firstly i'd carry a spare belt tensioner as youre going through mud all the time, only the genuine belts work well. Secondly, if you have the time i'd replace the exhaust manifold studs with inconel ones (from tillex performance) as theyre prone to snapping anywhere after 200,000km

Upgrade that radiator and intercooler with fan. Change out the diffs to 4.62 and run 35 inch tires with a 3 inch suspension lift. And definetly change the exhaust to 3 inch stainless steel. It'll be great if you can upgrade the airboz and upgrade the intake air duct hose, since they tend to break where it's corrugated. And a larger bonnet scoop.

Modern ZD30s with NADs and related mods are incredibly reliable engines. ZD30s got their reputation from the early days when they didn't have enough oil (nissan shortened the dip stick to fix that), and the first revision ZD30s had a cooling issue on cylinder 4, as well as the first and second revisions came with direct injection pumps (VP44) which had a few teething issues. A front mount or a forefront industries intercooler will help with intake cooling. The CRD version of the ZD30 though is an amazing engine on a ute, ( i have the DI version in my navara) they aren't a screaming power house, but when serviced properly, and the mods made they are incredibly reliable, especially on a ute. My nephew has an ex mine/fleet ute thats nearly a mirror image of this new camera bus, and its a weapon with the dual lockers. Pretty well the most important thing is to match the GVM upgrade with the amount of weight you have to carry otherwise its ride quality is garbage (but you all know this anyway). Another issue with the earlier ZD30s is that they have a pressed steel water pump impeller, and when the coolant started to degrade and if it wasn't changed, it started to rust out, causing cooling issues which has killed a lot of ZD30's over the years. The only other common issue was the tips of the glow plugs breaking off and causing havoc. You could either change them, or put in a glowplug timer to shut them down earlier, as they overheated, and cracked. The stock ones are ceramic, if you replace them with the metal tip ones that stops that issue as well.
Definitely keen to see how you boys mod up the ute, but its up to the task. They are tanks. Just carry a spare belt tensioner, and replace the alternator pulley with a solid one. On this i would also do a turbo changeover, at the 200k mark its started to get a little tired. I did my navara at 210k, as i have seen what happens when the turbos let go on the nav, at least on a patrol you have an intercooler to catch the pieces of aluminium heh.
The only other real thing is cooling. With cast block and alloy head, if they overheat even once you are already in danger territory. So coolant temperature sensor is a good bit of insurance just in case the viscous fan lets go, or the rad gets blocked with gunk, you have a head start on stopping the engine from cooking and kettling.
Oh and the stock intercooler has a nasty habit of blowing of the end caps and leaking - replacing that should be a fairly high priority for reliability.

Need to hook up with fabwitz boys and get the snorkel to the intercooler all done by them. Exhaust done in stainless 3 inch all the way. +30 injectors, cross country intercooler or a front mount jobby. Tune by ECPT or BAET. Disable the EGR valve. Upgrade the radiator. As said in video from dual mass to a single mass. Good clutch in her. Raise her another couple inches. Gvm upgrade. 35s as her shoes. Get different gears right and you will have a tough unit.

@@triggerhappy8872 the CRD is actually very reliable compared to the DI in earlier years. and post 2007, it makes it very hard to do any engine swap. Can only do a motor of the same year model or newer and has to retain all factory options.
