Hi Tim I’ve got a 2003-4 patrol zd3lt di and it’s been great since 100000 klm I have serviced it myself and changed oil and filter every 5000klm and changed all other oil and fluids regularly too. I’ve been towing a 18’6 pop top van around good old oz for eight years it’s done 360000 klms so far still going strong. Fitting a new turbo last year and injector pump . Apart from that it has not let us down. Thanks again for your videos keep up with the work.Anthony
Gday mate That’s great Ks you’ve got from your 03 Patrol and you’re towing a van as well. I’ve just bought a camper trailer and my Zd30 has done over 400000ks now and still going strong. I made a new video about my Zd30 ticking over 400000ks if you’d like to watch that one. Thanks very much for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim
G'day mate, Thats wicked Ks on your 03 Patrol. Really good hearing about good ones from those early years. Thanks heaps mate for your reply about your Patrol. Cheers Tim.
Love it mate. Got my 2012 zd30 gu tuned by evolution tuning up on the glasshouse. 144hp 404nm at the rear on 33s. service it every 5000km. Absolutely no dramas with 130000km great bit of gear.
G'day mate, Thats great to hear that your 2012 GU has been going well. The tune makes a big difference to how the ZD30 goes, thats for sure. Top stuff mate and thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim....I got 2002 di with 504,000 km's....and yes you are right there mate...oil and filter changes regularly, every 7,500 I do without fail using Penrite oil...motor is stock and unopened....all I have replaced is clutch, turbo, intercooler and hoses recently...all fluids changed regularly also...love my 3.0 litre and still going strong...cheers !!
G'day Jimmy, That's unreal mate the high Ks you have got from your ZD30, specially when your is in those early years when they were meant to blow up after 100,000ks. Plus yours is unopened. I use the same oil mate, good quality oils at regular intervals is key. Thanks heaps mate for your reply, its great hearing about so many ZD30's still going strong. Cheers Tim.
A lot of good points about servicing and running the motor in. The way you drive it helps a lot, the big trips rather than a family bus that will drive with cold oils to the shops, school or work and rarely do highway k's.
Good to see more videos like this dispelling people's arrogant and ignorant opinions. I have 340000km on my ZD and it has been very reliable. I have also managed to make good safe gains with power and torque, and get my fuel economy as low as 10.7L/100. Mind you that's on 35's and with hundreds of kilos of mods bolted to it.
Yeah mate, spot on. The ZD30 has been hit pretty hard for nearly 20 years as not a reliable motor. Im pretty passionate about the Patrol 3ltr and thats why i made this video. Cleary by so many replies, that a lot of them are going extremely well. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
Hello i am from south Ireland and i have been driving Patrols over 14years now. I am on the Patrol 4x4 ozz forum almost since it started too sharing info and knowledge aswell as getting it. Anyway i sold a grey one still running last year with 570000K on the clock (2004 model) the injection pump was done @ 300k and the head finally cracked after a faulty radiator only with 570000k onboard, that would have kept going only for that rad. I had the earlier 2000 model which made it to 160000k and overheated due to a faulty belt tensioner (bad luck) and leaking oil cooler. Now i have a 2007 model and have 300000k up with no problems at all only done the injection pump but i expect it to be bulletproof too for many K's to come. I also break Patrols here and know every nut and bolt and can testify that maintainence is key and i do all my own work on the Patrols i own,i would say watch the cooling system like belt tensioner etc cause if you maintain the cooling system that engine will run forever,do coolant flushes every 50000k and change fan belt with it.I would suggest fit a new rad and hoses around 150000K. If you service it and maintain it well you won't kill it!! I also run my own business as a tree surgeon and tow heavy trailers everyday with them,i agree the harder they are worked the better they go, I just love the ZD30 3.0 Patrols they are so reliable and dependable thati honestly could not drive nothing else!! Great vid, nice Patrol by the way and greetings from Ireland!
G'day mate. All the way from Ireland. Thanks a lot for your detailed reply and feedback. Thats interesting what you say about changing the radiator coolant every 50000ks. When the head was replaced on mine back in May 2019, a full cooling system was replaced from top to bottom. I will sure take on board some of your advise mate. Sounds like you have had a great run from the Patrols you have had, and with reaching high Ks on the clocks. Thanks again mate. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Thanks Tim yes i love my Patrols they are awesome! Hard to think about driving any other 4x4 really,i love the room too in the drivers seat. Keep up the good work with the videos they are real and to the point. Cheers!
G'day Mate, mine is a 2012 crd with 147.000 she has never missed a service agreed servicing is paramount for a long life also I only use OME parts only a few bucks more than aftermarket also I only use "Nissan coolant" with distilled water with book servicing intervals in conjunction with a cooling system flush. Personally, I think the 5-10k servicing intervals give an owner a good opportunity to have a good look over ones rig pick up issues before they become big problems. IF you are new to looking at buying a used Nissan or already have one there are good Nissan forums which are great for sharing your passion and talk with people who have great knowledge of patrols
Gday Dan, That’s great yours is still going well. Regular maintenance is certainly the key to a long lasting motor. I use genuine Nissan filters, best way to go. Thanks mate, I greatly appreciate your feedback. Cheers Tim.
I have a well serviced 2004 3ltr Patrol that pulled 23ft caravan all over Australia. The head just went at 385klms, buying full recon head, VRS set, glow plugs and once installed will be ready to go again. 👍
Gday Tim, we got ourselves a 08' wagon ex police car with 89km on it in 2.5 yrs we gave just cracked the 200km. Been round Oz 1.5 times and VHC every chance we get (it's 20km to the King Valley) it's serviced every 10 or every 5 if we push it hard and has never missed a beat. Pre-filter, catch can, 3" exhaust and a safe tune it's the most reliable car we have had. It's off again this weekend for a run to Evan's creek, no.3 hut, razorback and Craig's hut and home again. My 6yo and I love watching your episodes. Cheers
G'day Craig, Thats wicked mate to hear you also have got a ZD30 thats going the distance. This video is showing just how many are out there. It's great to hear about so many. Thats one of the good things about buying an Ex government vehicle, they are generally well looked after and have a great service history. Maybe i might catch you and your son out in the bush some day mate. Thanks for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
I have a 2006 patrol with the zd30 and just clocked 435000 km ,ive always service every 5000 km had it for ten years and just now have signs of leaky head gasket cant complain love it
G'day Darren, Thats a really good run you have had from your ZD30. Service them well and they will keep going. I also have a top end oil leak going on. Probably leaking from the same spot as yours. Im getting it fixed in a few weeks. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
I have a 2005 GU with the ZD30 engine. Just done 266,000k's and it detonated the other day. Misfired, then big plumes of smoke out the back. I thought it may have been a turbo till I took the oil filter off and found it was full of metal shavings. I have only had the vehicle since January. Love it. However I don't know how often the previous owner serviced it. My rule is oil and oil filter every 5,000 k's. I have tracked down a new exchange engine for $5,500. Expensive things if not properly maintained. It certainly will be after I put the new engine into the vehicle. I have a GQ as well, TB42 petrol, great truck. I have owned it for 18 years. It's been to the Cape 3 times including the Tele track. Love it. Never failed me in all those years.
Gday Steve, Sorry mate to hear about your ZD30 letter go at 266000ks. I change my oil and filter every 5000ks. Just did a change in the weekend. Mine now has 347000ks and so far it’s still going well. They sure do love clean fresh oil. Your GQ sounds like a beast mate. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
I had a 2001 GU 3.0L Patrol for around 7 years. I had to get rid of it as it starting costing me too much money in repairs. In a 6 month period I spent nearly $6K on a clutch and 2nd hand injector pump. I replaced the intercooler as it had a hole in it. It also was losing power cutting out every now and then but toward the end it was getting worse and worse. Unfortunately it had to go. I miss the ol girl I must say. Ended up buying a 4x4 ute. We had some good adventures in the Patrol.
G'day Theo, Yeah mate, some times it's just best to move on and get something else. I hope the 4x4 ute you got is going well as the replacement for the Ol Patrol. Thanks for your reply and feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
I Love my 2001 Di zd30, 235000kms with all the mods done to hopefully keep it reliable and it hasn’t skipped a beat, loves getting driven hard in toolangi mud and the high country
G'day Jay, Thats great to hear mate, yours is still going well from those early years. Wicked Ks you have on yours. Regular servicing sure does help mate. Thanks heaps for that feedback, its great hearing about ZD30's from the early years that are still going strong. Cheers Tim.
Most ZD30 engine failures is from boost spike caused from the variable vane turbo issues causing boost to spike to over 35psi. The answer is to convert turbo to old school wastegate style turbo or cleaning the original turbo vanes annually.
Tim Bates 4wd Adventures That’s all good. Some say the ZD30 engine is a lemon but that’s not true it’s internally similar to most Diesel engines and strong as hell and runs twice the boost from factory as a TD42. A boost gauge is essential with the zd engine as a boost spike can lift the head cos of the already factory high boost and high compression ratio causing head gasket failure. Personally I’m not a fan of variable vane turbos on a diesel engine as the vanes are easily clogged/jammed up with soot and I would change to a wastegate style on plus its a great excuse to upgrade and easier to get the purchase pass the finance minister. I also agree that the best way to run in a new diesel engine is to load up the caravan and just give it heaps to ensure the rings bed in properly.
Hi and thanks for the incite , i just picked up an 03 3liter its service history is good I'm getting a full service and safety check it has 240k so I'm expecting some issues , its a great car to drive and I'm very happy with it . i understand the importance of clean oil and filters , I'm not such a hard driver as some i take the view if it has lasted to this point ill give it TLC when its with me ,
Gday James, That’s great Ks on the Patrol you just pick up. Look after it mate and keep that good service history going. Clean oil and new filters are key. Diesels love clean oil. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Dad’s got the 03 grenade 3.0 420,000km He’s had to replace the alternator and radiator and recently the rear main seal got replaced. It’s now been in the shop for a couple months cause the auto transmission module won’t choose gears… I told him it’s manual time but won’t listen. engine is great though, sounds strong and doesn’t tick so we’re keen to see what he gets out of it
G'day mate, Wicked Ks on both of those rigs mate. Regular servicing sure does help keep them going. Unreal they haven't been opened up yet. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Everyone was giving me such a hard time for buying my 09 ZD30 coil cab ute, it has 260,000kms on it now and has been nothing but reliable, catch can installed day one and emptied every month, change my oil and oil filter every 5000kms, liqui moly injector cleaner every 5000kms. Air filter and fuel filter every 10,000kms. Havent had a single issue with my ZD30 and on average I'd say I'd go for a 4wd weekend every 3-4 weeks up in the Vic high country
G'day Lem, Thats wicked to hear about you 09 GU Ute. Unfortunately the issues from the years of 2000 - 2003 just wont go away, and so many people compare the newer model ZD30's to those years. Mine has been fantastic and has been worked pretty hard over the years. Regular services like you are doing is well worth the effort. Top stuff mate and thanks for the feedback about your Patrol. Cheers Tim.
Hey Tim and the guys, I’m quite new to 4WD I was wondering if the 04 ZD30 is considered a newer model like you mentioned. And any tips on not what to do when going 4WD to prevent any issues?
gday mate, iv got the zd30 Patrol 2012 simpson 50th annv edition. had a stage 2 upgrade done, made such a difference to the torque and overall performance very good. Great for towing now etc..
G'day mate, Yeah the stage 2 upgrade makes a huge difference. Mine drives so much better and great for over taking, thats for sure. Towing would help big time with your setup. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim
Tim, I just got my GU back on the road. Exchange ZD30 engine fitted along with a new clutch, injectors, turbo, glow plugs, intercooler, Crank Angle sensor etc.... Running well now. It would want to. I'll be changing the oil every 5,000k's as suggested by you. I hope to get a few K's out of it. Cheers. Steve WEBB.
G'day Steve, Good that you have you Patrol back on the road mate. I hope the new engine goes well into the future. Regular oil changes are key. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim
My 2013 ZD30 Nissan Patrol GU still runs without a flinch. It's got just short of 200 000kms on the clock. My only trouble with the engine is lack of towing power. It's not a great engine to tow my bushtrailer. Other than that, it just keeps on going. And it's worked very hard on the farm. It's done Namibia, Mozambique, South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and Zambia comprehensively. i am contemplating a 4.8L Patrol at this point though. When talking axles, chassis and drive drain bits and underpinnings, this patrol really feels military spec.
Far out mate. You have travelled to some amazing places around the world. I hope your Patrol keeps you travelling mate. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim
Hi, Thanks for sharing your experience. I bought my zd30 with 316000km and done turbo now. Love it. Its a good car. Cant afford it really but can do with old shoes :)
Gday Mike, No worries mate. Mine now has over 370000ks on the clock and still going well. They are a great car mate. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Thanks Batesy...really enjoyed this presentation. It is a funny thing but you do not realise how many cars on the road are say a Nissan until you buy and drive one yourself. The number of "older" Nissan vehicles especially 4WD around my area is amazing !! Many are farm utes and like yours many are equipped for some serious off road work...and you are of course right when you say maintaining the vehicle over many years will give you the right result !! My farm ute is a 20 year old Ford Courier ( PE) Twin Cab 4 x 4 and has over 360,000 k's on it. Have it serviced every 6 months and it has been (touch wood) the most reliable truck I have known. I use it every day and give it a run into Mansfield at least twice a week. The only thing I have replaced was the radiator at 206,00 k's! Oh and the interior light bulb !! Still loving my STX Navara...just clicked over 10,000 k's in 6 months !!
G'day Craig, Yeah spot on mate. The Nissan badge has been a reliable range of four wheel drive for many years. Farms around Australia have been using them as a work horse for many years. I'd like to get an old G60 one day, it would be wicked to have one. I dont know if it's still on this property. But i use to see one covered in scrub on a farm down on the Mid land Highway, not far from the Mansfield turn off. The good Ol Ford Courier has been around for a long time as well mate. Regular service and it will keep going mate. Lol Great to see a few Ks ticking up on the new Navara since you picked it up. Thanks a lot mate for your reply and feedback. I greatly appreciate it. Cheers Batesy.
G’day Batesy, good to see your patrol is going well again. I’ve got an 03 series 3 with 380k on it. (All original) It’s towed a 2 1/2 ton van around for the last 10 years and done a fair bit of off road work. (A lot in the high country). I’ve got quite a few mods done to it which has been the secret to its longevity. Keep up your vids mate I enjoy watching your channel. All the best. Adam
G'day Adam, Thats unreal mate that your 03 is going so well, and high Ks on the clock. Top stuff mate and might see you in the high country some day. Thanks heaps for your reply and feedback about the channel. Thanks for that mate. Cheers Tim.
Nathan Reid , the valve or two dropped into the motor and made a mess, no mods at the time just factory , now it’s been modified a bit to get around 160kw at wheels
Hey Batesy, love hearing all the work and effort that gets put into the car to get it where it is. My gu is a 2016 and have only got 25000 kms. Atm only got a 3 inch exhaust and Tillix valve for a bit of power, catch can second fuel filter from new , 2 inch lift and 33s and set up for camping and 4x4. It has taken me everywhere I’ve taken it and never faulted. Also get it serviced every 5000 km . Absolutely love it. Next year will be bigger inter cooler and tune I think. This car will last me many years to come. Maybe even my young fella will use it one day! GO the zd30! Cheers
G'day mate, Yeah thanks mate. My patrol has been well looked after and it sure pays off, thats for sure. Thats great your 2016 Patrol is going well. Im the same i think. I cant see myself replacing the Patrol anytime soon. They are a fantastic four wheel drive, straight off the show room floor. Im sure if your son ends up with your Patrol one day, it will still be going strong and it will take him to some amazing places. Thanks heaps for your reply and feedback mate, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Batesy.
I have a 2000 3L Di 350000 ks, got a remap, 3 inch exhaust, bigger intercooler and I couldn't be more happier with how it goes, I get plenty of shit for it but it gets the job done
Gday Darcy, That’s wicked Ks from your 2000 ZD30. Plenty of people do bag out the mighty ZD30, but there’s plenty of them going strong and reaching high Ks on the clock. Look after them and they are great. Mine isn’t far off 400000ks. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Just came across this video and thumbs up. I have the ZD30 in a 2002 Navara and they are also given a bad rap. I've had it since new and it now has 540,000+km on the clock and counting. Have done a few basic mods and have found it to be the most reliable vehicle I've had. There is a lot to be said for basic maintenance. Spoke to a guy years back who said he got 750k out of his (long haul km's ) before he needed to anything substantial. Finger's crossed!
Gday Craig, That’s wicked Ks mate from your Nav I had two D22 Navaras before the Patrol. Both were fantastic cars, never had a problem. My Patrol now has 375000ks and still going strong. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
We've only got a young pup, Batesy, a 2016 ZD30 with only 60k on the clock. We look forward to pushing up the kms in the years to come and of course looking after the power plant. Thanks for the vids.
G'day mate, Your's is only a new kid on the block and getting started on many good years of touring this great country. Have fun in it mate. The Patrol is a very capable 4x4, i couldn't be happier with mine. Thanks heaps for your reply mate. Cheers Batesy.
Hi Tim. I've got the same Nissan Patrol as you.. I've got 316,000ks on mine I have 3' straight pipe, oil catch can, and cross country intercooler and she's still going strong
G'day mate, Thats great to hear about your Patrol. Solid Ks on the clock and still going strong. I have the same extra's that you have, worth having thats for sure. Thanks for replying mate. Cheers Tim.
Gday Tim. I have just put a deposit on a 2010 GU7 with 32,000 kms. Before I watched this video I was feeling a bit anxious as I came across some info that the ZD30 engine can have problems. But watching ur vid and reading the comments has put me at ease. I will definitely follow ur advice with regular oil and filters. This GU7 has a lovells GVM upgrade which was what attracted me to the vehicle together with the low Kms. Do you think it's a capable towing vehicle? Looking at towing my 2.8ton caravan.
Gday Laurie, Sounds like a great buy you have picked up. My ZD30 has been amazing. Regular servicing and those oil and filter changes are key. It will tow no worries. Might need a few engine upgrade mods for a bit more power, see how it goes. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hey Tim I had the d22 nave with the ZD30 non crd. Everything eles in that Ute I had to replace but the motor and front diff where the only things never let me down the fuel pump on the other hand wat a night mare I did 3 in the 6 yrs I owned the car sold it with 185 on the clock It’s still going strong for the new owner now I do believe. 👌🏼
G'day Tim, I also had the D22 ZD30 from 2003 and it was so good and reliable i bought another one in 2006. That D22 i had right up to buying the Patrol in 2009. The 2006 Navara i sold that with 135000ks on the clock. Both of the D22's i had never let me down. Motors, running gear etc were all no worries. Thanks heaps mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Nice job mate love the whole flash back from say one up till now she looks tough from all the years. I've never owned a Nissan I'm a Toyota man lol had the Hilux since I was 23 only did the top end in it only last year she's a 3 liter non turbo but thinking of putting a turbo on it she's now done 40000ks on it and still going strong oil change ever 10 thousand ks
G'day Chris, Thanks mate. It has been a long road of many good years with my patrol since buying it back in 2009. Toyota has a long standing of reliable four drives over the years. Thats great your Hilux is going well mate. Fitting a turbo will make a big difference to how your 3ltr Hilux will run. Thanks heaps for your reply and detail mate. Cheers Tim.
Top stuff mate. Keep looking after it. I’ve made a recent video of my Zd30 just ticked over 400000ks. Check that one out mate. Thanks for your feedback Cheers Tim
Got an 03 zd30 at 400,000ks. Ex minesite vehicle was thrashed before I bought her (and after). Still running well. Done NADS, that's about it. Still running stock intercooler so might look at upgrading after seeing yours. As a tip I don't see talked about much, I got a pretty massive power boost from a new airbox (steal ones they sell on patrolapart).
Gday mate, That’s great yours is going well. I tried to do a video a while ago with two companies about steel vs plastic snorkels. They didn’t want a bar of it. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, I have a 2009 GU Patrol ZD30 CRD, Bruce as he is affectionately known has a bit over 232K k’s on the clock and has been a very capable and reliable bus. We have toured much of this great country in Bruce and love him to bits. We have done The Gibb River Road, Great Central Road from west to east, the Savannah Way east to west and much much more. We did run into strife on one occasion whilst tackling the Atherton Tablelands. I pushed old Brucey boy a bit hard, warped the manifold and blew the turbo. I have since upgraded the turbo, intercooler, 3” exhaust, Dawes & needle valve, added EGT and boost gauges to keep an eye on temps and he just loves it. Great car with so many fond family memories.
G'day Nathan, Bruce, thats a pretty cool name for your Patrol. Lol You sure have travelled some great parts of Australia. The extra mods that you have done, is pretty much what i also have. The gauges are well worth it to see what s going on. Thanks heaps mate for your reply, and i hope you guys have a lot more great travelling times in Bruce Lol. Cheers Tim.
I'm a big fan of the zd30 crd have owned one for 3 years and 50 thousand ks relatively issue free other than injectors at 205k. Had 3 inch exhaust 18psi catch can dawes valve egr block etc and loved every second til recently when it got stolen. On the hunt for another one now!!
G'day mate, This was a good read until you mentioned that someone stole your mighty GU. No good at all mate. I hope you find another one soon. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Was a great car until i had the dreaded phonecall saying its been taking and forcefully rammed through locked gates whilst im in another state working 2 weeks ago 😡. I'll get another one, what intercooler is that? Was next on my things to do and really want to do it to my next one!!! Great channel mate the patrols are such a comfy thing!
@@Swwa89 That really sux mate. I hope you're into another one soon mate. Not sure of the brand the cooler is now. The guys at DTA organised it. The Patrol is a great 4wd off road for comfort. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback on the channel, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Hey mate, Looking at getting my first Patrol - 2015 3.0TD, 125,000kms - thanks for your review of the motor, sounds like a reliable engine if maintaned.
G'day Neil, Sounds like a good Patrol you have found for your first one. Pretty low Ks on the clock. Yeah for sure mate, keep it well maintained, and hopefully it will go the distance. Regular oil and filter changes will go a long way to your ZD30 being around for many enjoyable touring years. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
2000 ST ZD30 469k and still going strong. Just like you said it's all about the servicing. It has a catch can, ungraded intercooler and a 2 3/4" exhaust.
Gday Steven, That’s wicked Ks you’ve got from your 2000 model ZD30. 2000 were the bad years. It’s amazing what can be achieved with regular servicing. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
I have a 2002 with 275000 original. Blanked EGR. Which causes the engine light to come on occasionally. catch can feeding the chassis.(rust prevention ). Long range fuel tank. Dule batteries. Draws. 3" lift.
Yeah the ZD30 cops a bad review from what they were like 21 years ago. The stigma still stands. Look after them as i have and mine has been great. Good luck finding a good one and have it checked out. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
love the vids mate and the cool trips you do is your Speed out out because you have bigger tires If so your taco would be as well and your 4b mite have done more k's then what it says on the clock
Some had blown zd30s at 90 000kms,some work 300 000kms,without any mods... Maybe problem is that on certain rpms, engine is "doing damage" to itself. Around 2000-2300rpms,my zd30 ('06) has "lag",so i'am avoiding driving in that range. Mine has done 170 000kms without any mods. Still going strong. Onwards '07,zd30 is sorted out,
Yeah since the CRD came out, doesn't seem to be as many issues as the early ZD30. Mine has nearly got 340000ks on the clock now. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim
I put 438,000kms on my Toyota FJ in middle east... fitted a CSF full alloy radiator and HPS hoses, every 8000km ran synthetic lexus 5w30 oil. TRD glass packed oil filters. ect .. Now I am back in Oz with a 'new' old 2012 Nissan Y61 with the ZD30.... this inherited truck has only done 98,000kms. So I plan to look after it and hopefully get a high number of Kms from it too. Going to have R&D all the preventative aspects on this machine to keep the old girl running.
I just sold me old 02, 284thou on the clock Unopened Had been beyond reliable for me The only time i was left on the roads side was when the alternator decided to call it a day. I watched her drive off a week ago and i miss it terribly Considering a slighty newer model 2007 Just hope its been as look after
Gday mate, That’s great Ks for that model you had. I couldn’t sell mine. I just couldn’t handle watching someone drive my Patrol away. Good luck with the next one you get mate. There is some good ones to be picked up. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim
Have 2 nissan terrano's in Ireland both zd30 engines . Head gasket on 1st terrano with 300,000km however didn't maintain much . Was very reliable up to that point. 2nd terrano purchased as replacement. Engine very reliable too with plenty of grunt at 300,000km mark. I do maintain it better than 1st coz of experience with first engine head gasket issue. Had mitsubishi 2.8tdi which was much heavier on diesel than zd30 nissan. Terrano in Europe built in Spain has slightly lighter body to patrol.
2013 Patrol ZD30, bought new, still completely stock. Just ticked over 300000 km yesterday. Serviced every 10000 to 20000 km. Only issue has been replacement of two fuel rail relief valves. First one local mechanic did, he replaced the whole rail assembly, $1200 lasted 60000 km. Second one I did, replaced the valve only, $85 and around 1 hour of my time, has lasted 40000 km so far. I think dirty fuel has caused the issue both times. I suspect many unknowledgeable and/or unscrupulous mechanics diagnose this as a fuel pump fault, and many unwitting owners pay a fortune to get the pump replaced. The fault is not fixed so the rabbit whole gets deeper, along wth the cost.
Gday Brett, Great hearing about another ZD30 ticking over 300000ks. Regular servicing is the key to any engine. Great feedback mate with your experience on the fuel rail issues you had. Thanks a lot mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Mate i got my Y61 gu zd30 patrol new in 2015, one thing is clear fuel economy is different in each one. Not sure if the factory snorkel is partly at fault. But still love the girl, basic and less electronic crap to go wrong!!
Adam Jones Gday Adam, I’m getting around mid to high 13s for my fuel economy, not to bad. The Patrol is a good thing, that’s for sure mate. Good yours is going ok. Cheers Tim.
My 2003 zd30 is still going strong. Fuel pump went at 390000ish. The turbo went 8weeks ago at 418000 I am more than happy with my zd30. I don’t want a common rail I’d be happy Nissan stayed at this pint of development. I’ll buy another one if it Karks it.
Gday Ben, That’s a wicked run you are getting from your 03 ZD30. Great hearing about one from the problem years that’s still going strong. Thanks heaps mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim I have a 2008 CRD patrol ute , I got it at 60k and between 60k and 70k I wished I’d never bought it , in those 10k it had exhaust manifold issue , leaking timing chain cover , dual mass flywheel changed to solid and new clutch and rear main seal replaced , I was disgusted with the car , I’m now at 260k and have had no trouble since but i have been thinking about selling it now as I contacted 3 local Nissan dealers and was told they no longer could provide long or short motors , I rang three local engine building shops and they said between 9 and 15k to replace it when time comes , I love the car but just don’t love it enough to throw that much money at it , if they still made new ones I would probably buy one today but because of the age and kilometers on mine I think I may sell it , just telling my story , also when I bought the car it was one owner with service history and I’ve never missed a service with Nissan , cheers
G'day Richard, Thats no good at all mate what you went through with the issues in you GU Ute. Good to hear its going ok now with some high Ks after those bad days. I have also heard that the motors for the GU CRD are no longer available. I will be keeping my Patrol, its a great car. If the motor was to terminate, i would look at a Cummings Diesel engine upgrade. Thanks mate for sharing your story on your GU ute. I appreciate your feedback. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures thanks for the reply Tim , I have two cummins 6BT engines in my boat and they are the best engine I have ever owned ,they are literally bullet proof .I have had friends go the Recondition zd30 engines and it always turns into a bloody horror story so I would either buy a second hand low kilometer Zd30 or consider an LS swap , the power would be awesome but I think the novelty would soon slow down and the fuel would be a killer
@@richardkaye2228 Yeah cool mate. The 6BT would be a great engine swap. If i get around to replacing my ZD30, i would most likely look at the 4.5ltr Cummings. Some really good reviews on that engine swap for the Patrol. See how my ZD30 goes down the track. At the moment, it's going really well.
Hi Tim love the shows you have inspired me so much now I’m getting into retirement would love to try some of the high country on my 2003 str Navara I bought new always been around cars but never had an engine like this as you say regular filter and good oil changes to date new clutch at 200 thousand and new accelerator sensor that’s all it’s had I will be towing a supreme getaway any advice from you would be much appreciated many thanks joe
G'day Joe, I had a D22 Navara in 2003. It was a great car. Keep those oil and filter changes regular and it will help big time for the long life of your engine. Not sure about towing mate, i havent done a lot of it. Just take your time and give the car a few rest stops if travelling in hot days. Thanks heaps for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim
Hi Tim great looking at the footage and enjoying your presentation. My ZD30 has also served me well, (GU wagon 2002) a little over 300000 km and still going. It's also had a fair amount of work doing most major tracks around Australia, towing, and I've given it a gut full of petrol by accident at one point. I love the vehicle it's one of the most capable 4x4s off the shelf going around, with a few mods a beast. After purchasing a dual cab ute l still can't bring myself to sell it, you may have given me the kick-start and inspiration l need to freshen up the old girl and go another 300000 + . Keep up the good work (promoting the high country) and look forward to seeing you in the bush.
Zd30 is a really good engine. I bought it recently was driven 310xxxkm but no knockings n stuff just had starting issues due to old grounding but now all set
2012 gu 206000km always serviced motor is stock standard except for catch can. Just starting to chew diesel so she is as of this day sitting in at T&E auto in Dubbo for a service, intake clean,3inch exhaust, larger intercooler(front mount) and a Uni chip 5 map package. Happy Birthday Poo lol
G'day Peter, Big birthday package of goodies coming for your Patrol. All the best with all mate. It will make a big difference. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Just picked up a 2006 ST zd30 DI with 150k on the clock from a grey nomad for $35k. Service history every 5000k’s, $35,000 of fruit on her with receipts and he never took it off-road. Getting GTurbo in Perth to put in a G250 Grunter turbo with a bigger Intercooler and dyno tune with an expected 220ph & 550nm gain 👌
G'day Rick, Mate, sounds like you have bought a ripper GU. Great service history which is important. Once you get the tune, turbo and bigger intercooler, it will make a massive difference to how it drives. Thanks mate for your reply, and have fun touring around. Cheers Tim
Totally agree love my 2007 zd30 gu ute last time l look it also has 320k on her but it now 7th month 03 my injectors turned up and glow plug getting a little hard to start but a proper dream of a motor even though l do cop all the smart cracks about it but like ol-mate l would put a new zd 30 back in her tomorrow, my vehicle cops a hard time from don't flog it bit works hard never a problem and with the coil springs l don't think there a more comfortable motor car compared to the ones lve travel in anyways, plenty of boondy when you want it, all l can say don't be scared to own one. Happy 4x4ing you dogs. 😊
Gday mate Yeah the ZD30 does get a lot of bad reviews, mostly from people that have never owned one. Mine has now ticked over 400000ks. Still going great. I have a video on that. That’s great yours is going well. Cheers Tim
Hey Tim little random question is that a drizabone vest? I’m looking to purchase one but unsure what temperature you use it in/how warm it is? I like in Brisbane so it doesn’t get that cold so
2003 zd 30 with 390000km only problem has been a blown intercooler and a block egr. getting 13l to the the 100 starts every time doing 300km road trip every day
G'day Andrew, Wicked story about your 2003 GU. It's great hearing ZD30 from those years still going strong, and yes theres quite a few around. Thanks heaps for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
G'day Tim, I finally worked out how to use this thing for comms!! As we spoke beforehand, I've got a 2014 Titanium wagon which I love to bits - problem is that the car has a vibration running through it. I pulled the tail shaft and put in an old spare and yet the vibes are still there. I have on order some Terrain Tamer unis and will fit them and get the tail shaft balanced to see if that fixes it? My questions is, has you Patrol had or have the vibrations and if so, how did you fix them? Ill let you know how I go but stressed about the box back lash as a possible culprit...... Pete
Gday Pete, Mate that’s no good about the vibration you’re experiencing in your vehicle. I certainly don’t have that problem going on. Sounds like you are in the right areas for the problem. Could be in the front end also. Wheel balance, worn steering links etc. I hope you get it sorted out soon mate. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, curious about tune, turbo update, with intercooler. Seeking cooler running with boost in power without reducing reliability, and it seams you've achieved that. Background. 2016 auto. GVM upgrade prior to dealer delivery. Secondary fuel filter (after factory filter) and catch can installed within 3k. Beuadesert 2-3/4 turbo back exhaust within 5k. Issue. My 2016 auto runs quite warm, and when towing can get real warm, let's say hot on long inclines. I had the Beuadesert 2-3/4" exhaust installed as I knew these needed to breathe better, but disturbingly it still warped an exhaust manifold at just 64K, hence I endured a learning curve replacing it with genuine Nissan, (difficult to obtain during Covid) but ha it's all replaced and going again. I have never achieved great fuel mileage but it's a weighty tourer with Pedders GVM upgrade to cater for my interior storage, Bundutop tent atop and Bunduawn off side. Curiously, out of the blue randomly it'd just losses power, feels like no turbo boost, running on air pressure available, or so I thought. Then a chap says "When did you last check the MAF sensor"? My response, "the what"? Well, I removed the MAF to discover it was lined in an extremely fine film of red dust, Cape York material I'm guessing (and yes I ran snorkel socks and replaced filters on route, so no lack off maintenance). Well, this needs to be circulated as this sensor is obviously critical. I'm now running at 14.75 lts per 100 and noticeably better pickup from get go, would say considerably increased. Now fuel consumption not equivalent to you, but I'm auto, running at 3.4 tonne always with roof top tent, so I'm truly chuffed at 14.75lts per 100. Now knowing now these things are not gutless I'm interested in tune, intercooler, turbo work you had done chasing cooler running plus a tad more poke. Genuine feed back from your experience would be greatly appreciated. Have you ever warped an exhaust manifold? Do you support use of daws valve needle boost control? I'm hesitant to proceed as I'm unsure later CRD required this. If I have upgraded turbo fitted, is this valve/needle still recommended? Are DTA still the recommended supplier of Turbo, Intercooler, tune. Lot to absorb, await reply. Oh, yes, I love my Y61 auto tourer.
I love all patrols but I’m looking for a virgin 4.2td st-l as I don’t trust the zd30. I want to build an overlander to go all around and through Australia which won’t leave me in the middle of nowhere. Saying that your patrol has a great reliability record so hopefully you’ll get another 320k out of it. I see you don’t use the bfg tyres anymore. Any reason if you can say?
G'day George, The 4.2 is another great motor in the Patrol. They are priced pretty high now days because the 4.2 isn't made anymore. I hope you find one that will suit you and travel you around Australia. That was the only set of BFG's i have run on my Patrol. They were a good tyre, and i got pretty good Ks out of them. Not sure what they are like these days, it was 11yrs ago when i ran them. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Hi mate my 01 di did 410xxx then went pop got a brand new 05 di crate engine only lasted 75xxx so you never no just luck of the draw I think 😂 i have now gone with a td42 bolted to my auto n loving it
G'day Jonny, Yeah it sure can be pot luck on how things can turn out. A 42 would be great, i'll see how mine goes over time. So far so good. Lol Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Gday mate I’ve had the swivel hub seals replaced a few times over the years I’ve had the Patrol. My gear box is still the original box and has never been opened. I’ve never had the wheel wobbles that happen to some GU Patrols. My Patrol is now over 410000ks on the clock and still going very well. I made a recent video when it ticked over 400000ks. Maybe check that one out as well if you like. Thanks for your feedback Cheers Tim
@timbates4wdadventures I've got one as well. I'm least worried about the engine. The suspension is hard work if lifted. The 1 keep the bushes and seals alive, and most annoying is wheel alignment. I replaced everything and after 2 good offroad sessions the wheel wobble is back.
@@fbombcamaro434 Im not sure whats going with your wheel alignment. I dont have that problem at all after going out in the bush on 4wd tracks. I haven't done a wheel alignment on my Patrol for years. It steers straight without pulling to one side, so i dont touch it.
Hey mate how much did the cooling system and new head end up costing you? I’ve just bought a ZD30 at 200,000 kms and just looking for potential coats down the track
Gday Daniel, Can’t remember exact costings. It was a few years ago now. Around $4-5k mate. No worries with my ZD30 now. It’s gold. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
I’ve got an 04 patrol wagon zd30di with 280xxx on the clock. Still going strong but starting to get a bit tired. Has been a good time with it but I fear it’s coming to an end
Gday Daniel, That’s great numbers mate from one of the older ZD30s. See how yours goes, hope it keeps on going. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hey ya going batesey just wanted to know if it’s still going strong as of 2024, thinking of buying a 250,000km patrol and wanted to know if it’s still kicking
Gday mate. It sure is. I made a video a few months ago of the Patrol ticking over 400000ks. It now has 412000ks. Still going strong mate. Get the GU you’re looking at checked mate by your mechanic. Cheers Tim.
I love patrols, plan on getting one for my first car, so I am NOT at all whatsoever saying these are bad vehicles nor engines, but my dad has owned 3 ZD30 patrols, all blew up, on his last ZD30, he did absolutely everything you can think of to stop it blowing up, got a way to stop it blowing? He did it. and yet it still blew up. So it's nice to see that some people are succeeding keeping these things alive. When I buy one I'm gonna go for a TB45 or TB48 or maybe even a TB42, the petrol ones are indestructible, just a bit expensive to run.
G'day mate, Thats no good what your dad went through with the ZD30's that he had. It's hard to know why some don't last long and other ZD30's do. That is the only thing with the petrol motor Patrol's as you mentioned they are pretty heavy on fuel. I hope you find a good one in either of those fuel ranges that you are looking at. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hi. I've got a common rail 3.0 Patrol, too. But I am struggling with overboost and not that great power below 2000rpm even with a dawse valve installed. How did you fix this issue? With a remapping? Regards
Great to hear of your good run with this one Tim. Have just bought a manual 2012 wagon with 93000kms and am going to look after and treat it like you have with yours. I am going to fit a 3 inch exhaust , catch can , manual boost control and egt guage. Probably a coolant level sensor too, it’s a work in progress, but I’m definitely looking forward to a long and happy relationship with the vehicle. Thanks for a great video, and have just subscribed to your channel. Safe travels out there mate when you can, all the best.
Gday Adam, Thanks mate. Mine now has over 350000ks on the clock and still going strong. The GU you have just picked up sounds great mate. Low Ks on the clock. It’s worth looking after and change the oil and filter as often as you can. Every 5000ks is great if you can. I’m about to make a live driving video showing my EGTs and boost gauges in action. I’ll get that made when I can travel again. Thanks heaps for subscribing and your feedback made, I greatly appreciate it. Have fun adding mods to your GU as you go. Cheers Tim
Thanks for the reply Tim, I look forward to seeing your drive video. Very soon I will be getting the intake professionally cleaned on my wagon and then the catch can will go on. Stay safe out there mate. 👍
@@carskyavenue I’ll make that video as soon as I can travel again shoring my EGTs and turbo boost readings. Thanks mate you stay safe as well. Cheers Tim.
Gday Adrian, They can all be ok. Cones down to how they are looked after. Ive not heard of really any issues with the CRD 3ltrs. They began in 2006-07. Hope that helps mate. Cheers Tim.
Gday Chad, I’ve just loaded a walk around of my GU. Maybe have a look at that video as well mate. The motor is currently sitting around 397000 Ks on the clock. I’ll do a bit g video when it ticks over 400000ks. Hope you find a good one mate. Cheers Tim
Got a early 2002 direct injection ZD30 and it's been faultless. Only has 182k km's on it, but yeah they get a hard press mostly from people who don't understand how they work. I think the thing most folks cant get their head around the vacuum actuated vnt... Did egr and catch can with dawes + needle first, then bigger intercooler and east coast performance tune with bigger 200 cell cat and stainless exhaust. Runs like an expensive watch and look forward to putting another 182k on her.
G'day mate, Yeah the ZD30 does cop a pretty hard time from the early years of 2000 - 2003 and it has stuck for the current ZD30. Thats great to hear about another one that is going well. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Hey tim, Wondering if you can help. I also own a mighty zd30 and have just noticed there is a gap between my airbox and the snorkel. This is any issue as If i go through deep enough water, it will be sucked into my engine. Any words of wisdom to fix this? Unfortunately can't upload a photo to show you. Regards.
I've got an 02 with 340ks on it. Never had any issues with the engine and looking forward to many more adventures with it! Yours looks brilliant, awesome work!
Gday mate, That’s wicked Ks your 02 ZD30 has on the clock mate. Good to hear it’s still going strong. Mine is going great mate. They are a good thing. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
G'day Wibur, Maybe mate. I do know a few mates with them and they are happy with them. It could be an option, i'll be keen to hear if they go the distance with high Ks on that V8 motor. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
My 2003 zd30 patrol has 235ks I got it with 195ks. I have done the cooling system And exhaust manifold gasket. Also has boost controller and 3" exhaust has not let me down! I change oil every 5,000 and oil and fuel filter every 10,000 I change air filter as required!
I’m looking to get a swapped 2007 patrol with at 2010 motor 280kkms Just wondering if anything sus coulda gone on there And if anyone has experience with a gu and a 75 series cruiser how’s the power difference feel from the tractor engine 2h/ 1hzs to these d30s I don’t need to go fast but for this price like in this market I could save about 4K-8k on an old banger 75 or get something a fair bit more comfy in the GU
My 08 done 261,000 going great. 3' exhaust, HPD intercooler, HPD turbo boost, iDrive, pre filter and flashlube catch can , piping kit and airbox, Safari snorkel and dyno ecu tune in June. Love it
G'day Chris, You have done a bit to your ZD30 and its got some good high Ks on the clock and still going strong. I also have the HPD intercooler on my Patrol. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
G'day mate, Depends on a lot of things. Does it have a good service history? I dont know how it's been looked after. Mine has done nearly 400000ks and still going strong, because i have looked after it well. Best tip mate, get a good mechanic to look over it before you buy it. Good luck, hope it goes well. Cheers Tim
G'day mate, Wicked mate. Great to hear that yours is going well. Regular oil changes are key. Thanks heaps for your reply about your Patrol. Cheers Tim.
i didnt know you were involved with 4wd action back in the day. are you still mates with shauno and graham? if so you 3 should organise a trip together sometime.
Yeah mate, i did my first few dvd trips with Roothy. Then a lot of 4WD Action trips with Graham. about ten years ago. Still mates with all of the action crew. They were good fun days. It would be hard to get a trip going now with all of us. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim
G'day Ross, Gee thats a big call. I could jump the fence into a Toyota badge of some sort. I'll be keen to see what new four wheel drives hit the market in the coming years. At the moment, my Patrol ticks all of the boxes with the style of off road driving im keen on. Thanks heaps for that question mate. Cheers Batesy.
Gday mate. Big petrol engine with heaps of power. The down fall with the 4.8ltr petrol engine is they are pretty heavy on fuel. I don’t see many around these days. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim
Hi Guys, I have a 2008 Nissan Patrol 3L common rails, the mileage is now at 300k. I recently experience engine overheating if I drive it hard up hill or sand drive. I did a TK test and it shows exhaust gas in the radiator. So I think it might be a head gasket issue. Question: it is necessary to machine flat the head or just replacing a new gasket is enough to solve the problem?
G'day mate, If you are going to take the head off to replace the gasket, you would want the head looked at. When my head gasket went, i replaced the head with a new one. Hope that helps mate. Cheers Tim
They are very hit and miss motors, know of 2 personally that shit the tin around the 150,000km mark and know of some that have lasted long. After owning one for the best part of a year would i get another? Not for anything other than a donor shell for an engine swap. Dont get me wrong they arent bad by any means but theyre underwhelming at the least and almost any motor related issue you come across costs almost as much as if not more than a second hand whole motor. Had one as a work ute that shit the tin at least once a month and own one now thats doing nothing other than giving me a headache
Gday mate
That’s great Ks you’ve got from your 03 Patrol and you’re towing a van as well.
I’ve just bought a camper trailer and my Zd30 has done over 400000ks now and still going strong.
I made a new video about my Zd30 ticking over 400000ks if you’d like to watch that one.
Thanks very much for your feedback mate.

Hi Tim .i have a 2003 STL zd30 it's just done 414,000 ks all original and no modifications have been done to the engine .cheers
G'day mate,
Thats wicked Ks on your 03 Patrol.
Really good hearing about good ones from those early years.
Thanks heaps mate for your reply about your Patrol.

what are the mods just out of interest
@@nathanreid2974 engine is stock no mods . Just exterior
Same mines on half a million kms. Not a single issue. I love it.
2003, ZD30 PATROL here. Just hit half a million k’s no issues...all lock stock and no mods.
Love it mate. Got my 2012 zd30 gu tuned by evolution tuning up on the glasshouse. 144hp 404nm at the rear on 33s. service it every 5000km. Absolutely no dramas with 130000km great bit of gear.

Thats great to hear that your 2012 GU has been going well.
The tune makes a big difference to how the ZD30 goes, thats for sure.
Top stuff mate and thanks for your reply.

Can you tell what mod did you do? I`m from poland and there no one tune zd30 in europa people swap engine in patrol for better performance.
was it just a map or any other upgrades
Hi Tim....I got 2002 di with 504,000 km's....and yes you are right there mate...oil and filter changes regularly, every 7,500 I do without fail using Penrite oil...motor is stock and unopened....all I have replaced is clutch, turbo, intercooler and hoses recently...all fluids changed regularly also...love my 3.0 litre and still going strong...cheers !!
G'day Jimmy,
That's unreal mate the high Ks you have got from your ZD30, specially when your is in those early years when they were meant to blow up after 100,000ks.
G'day mate,
Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback.
My patrol, sure spends a lot of time in the bush and not on the roads.
Cheers Tim.
Cheers Tim.
ZD30 Direct Injection, 2002 model. 340,000kms on the clock. Still going strong & being driven hard!
Gday Dan,
That’s great yours is still going well.
Gday Peter,
That’s great mate.
My Patrol had the head replaced at 310000ls.
Thanks for your feedback mate, and enjoy your next trip.

G'day Craig,
Thats wicked mate to hear you also have got a ZD30 thats going the distance. This video is showing just how many are out there.
It's great to hear about so many.
Thats one of the good things about buying an Ex government vehicle, they are generally well looked after and have a great service history.
Maybe i might catch you and your son out in the bush some day mate.
Thanks for your reply and feedback.

I have a 2006 patrol with the zd30 and just clocked 435000 km ,ive always service every 5000 km had it for ten years and just now have signs of leaky head gasket cant complain love it
G'day Darren,
Thats a really good run you have had from your ZD30.
Service them well and they will keep going.
I also have a top end oil leak going on. Probably leaking from the same spot as yours.
Im getting it fixed in a few weeks.

Gday Steve,
Sorry mate to hear about your ZD30 letter go at 266000ks.
I change my oil and filter every 5000ks.
Just did a change in the weekend.
Mine now has 347000ks and so far it’s still going well.
They sure do love clean fresh oil.
Your GQ sounds like a beast mate.

I'd install bmw's M57 or Mercedes OM606. As good as diesel can be
I had a 2001 GU 3.0L Patrol for around 7 years.
G'day Theo,
Yeah mate, some times it's just best to move on and get something else.
I hope the 4x4 ute you got is going well as the replacement for the Ol Patrol.

Most ZD30 engine failures is from boost spike caused from the variable vane turbo issues causing boost to spike to over 35psi. The answer is to convert turbo to old school wastegate style turbo or cleaning the original turbo vanes annually.
G'day Dave,
Some great advise you have provided.
Thanks heaps for that mate, i greatly appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.

G'day Craig,
Yeah spot on mate.
Lol

Good to hear that yours is still going strong.
Gday Ben,
That’s a wicked run you are getting from your 03 ZD30.
G'day Richard,
Thats no good at all mate what you went through with the issues in you GU Ute.
Supreme getaway is off road need the comfort
G'day Joe,
I had a D22 Navara in 2003. It was a great car.
Keep those oil and filter changes regular and it will help big time for the long life of your engine.
Not sure about towing mate, i havent done a lot of it.
Just take your time and give the car a few rest stops if travelling in hot days.
Thanks heaps for your feedback mate.
Cheers Tim
452,000 on mine mate just keeps ticking over . Done an alternator bearing and dirty fuel filters .
Great car .
Wicked mate.
That’s great high Ks and it’s still going strong.
Thanks for your reply.

Gday mate,
They are a good engine. Plenty of them around with high Ks on the clock and still going well.
Thanks mate for your reply.

How much are they worth at that higher kms mate? I’m looking at a 2010 one with 285xxxkms for 23000$
2012 gu 206000km always serviced motor is stock standard except for catch can. Just starting to chew diesel so she is as of this day sitting in at T&E auto in Dubbo for a service, intake clean,3inch exhaust, larger intercooler(front mount) and a Uni chip 5 map package. Happy Birthday Poo lol
G'day Peter,
Big birthday package of goodies coming for your Patrol.
All the best with all mate. It will make a big difference.

G'day Rick,
Mate, sounds like you have bought a ripper GU.
Gday mate
Yeah the ZD30 does get a lot of bad reviews, mostly from people that have never owned one.
Mine has now ticked over 400000ks. Still going great.
I have a video on that.
That’s great yours is going well.

Hey Tim little random question is that a drizabone vest? I’m looking to purchase one but unsure what temperature you use it in/how warm it is? I like in Brisbane so it doesn’t get that cold so
2003 zd 30 with 390000km only problem has been a blown intercooler and a block egr. getting 13l to the the 100 starts every time doing 300km road trip every day
G'day Andrew,
Wicked story about your 2003 GU.
It's great hearing ZD30 from those years still going strong, and yes theres quite a few around.
Thanks heaps for your reply mate.

Pete
Gday Pete,
Mate that’s no good about the vibration you’re experiencing in your vehicle.
I'm now running at 14.75 lts per 100
and noticeably better pickup from get go, would say considerably increased.
G'day George,
The 4.2 is another great motor in the Patrol.

What about the swivel rebuilds and transmission?
Wheel wobble problems?
Gday mate
I’ve had the swivel hub seals replaced a few times over the years I’ve had the Patrol.
Thanks for your feedback

G'day mate,
Thats no good what your dad went through with the ZD30's that he had.
It's hard to know why some don't last long and other ZD30's do.
That is the only thing with the petrol motor Patrol's as you mentioned they are pretty heavy on fuel.
I hope you find a good one in either of those fuel ranges that you are looking at.

If you are going to take the head off to replace the gasket, you would want the head looked at.
When my head gasket went, i replaced the head with a new one.
