    I've always been a huge supporter of right to repair. I'm an independent automotive technician and I also repair electronics as a hobby. We create a ton of e-waste by throwing out electronics that could easily be repaired if we had the parts and service information available. Also, I'm guessing you salvaged any working components before you stacked the tower?

    • @Tronicsfix
      @Tronicsfix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I wish small electronics had similar right to repair laws as they do for cars. Although it seems like those laws are always being attacked too.

    • @nukelauncher95
      @nukelauncher95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@Tronicsfix There actually aren't any notable right to repair laws for cars.
      In the early 60s the U.S. Supreme Court set the precedent that aftermarket car parts are legal. Manufacturers are not required to sell any replacement parts to the public except for emissions control components, which on any fuel burning vehicle is most engine, transmission, and exhaust components. A simple rule of thumb is that if it can turn on the check engine light and ONLY the check engine light, the manufacturer must sell you the part. If you hit a pothole and blow out your shock or your power window mirror goes bad, they legally don't have to sell you parts. The reason why they do is because they're competing with the aftermarket and cars are rather low profit products. Automakers rely on owners bringing their cars in for service and buying 1st party OEM parts. That's where the real money is made.
      The same law that forces manufacturers to sell emissions parts also forces them to provide repair information and software required to update and program new modules. The diagnostic port under your dashboard is mandated and the rather ancient OBD2 standard is mandated too. Again, that's all of emissions and nothing else. I can buy a subscription to almost every major manufacturer's diagnostic software. Literally the exact same stuff their own dealerships use. The laws that allow aftermarket parts does not apply to software. Companies like Snap-On, Launch, and Autel pay the automakers for their software so they can develop aftermarket scan tools. Ford actually successfuly sued Autel, a Chinese company, for copyright infringement. They reverse engineered Ford's dealer diag software to add features to their own aftermarket tools that they didn't pay Ford for.
      As we move towards electric and more advanced and more secure vehicles, a ton of stuff will go away. They aren't forced to sell drivetrain parts since they're zero emissions. And they were never forced to sell any other parts to begin with. Tesla doesn't sell any components to the public. All the other automakers are starting to restrict the public from buying certain parts for their EVs too. And the software that runs all the advanced modules is all encrypted now and even if it was cracked, it has always been illegal to. Like I said earlier, software doesn't have the same protections against copyright as a physical part.
      Right to repair will guarantee that we'll get parts, information, and software for all parts of a car. It will be a legal requirement and not up to the manufacturer's discretion like it is today.

      @@Tronicsfix Indeed. It's absurd that if your disc driver breaks you have to buy another console because there are matching chips on both the motherboard and the driver and because of that you can't just replace the damn disc reader

    It's a real shame broken game consoles like these can't be repaired and donated to children's hospitals all over the world. Companies that willingly choose to block their products from being repaired are a scourge to the planet and its people.

    • @Benefits
      @Benefits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @Cerus98 Sony isn't going to repair a broken decade old console that's been out of warranty for 7 years. Even if you could send in an old broken console, Sony would just throw it away and send you a new one that would also eventually have to be thrown away. The whole Right to Repair movement is about being able to fix these things ourselves and have access to schematics and repair parts. We shouldn't be forced to pay a company hundreds of dollars to do a repair that we're capable of doing ourselves for $20 bucks.

    • @revengenerd1
      @revengenerd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not just childrens hospitals, basically people in a vulnerable position because as someone who for most of my life got stepped on but didn't qualify for things for various reasons something like a console would of given me faith in humanity, basically I felt discriminated against often unintentionally as I decided to not get into debt by living above my means, not having kids, not turning to drink/drugs (yes it often isn't a choice but still) Even as a adult I have seen things such as when I went to conventions no matter how much effort someone put into a costume and meant to be prizes that don't discriminate the kids (who had costumes their parents bought) got the prizes and it just hurt, people just saw that they were kids and I can use that sort of situation to most things, I was living off bread and water, someone with kids would get at least one if not multiple food parcels, I was living on a manky matress in a room barely big enough to even fit that in with no heating and its -20c outside, I got no help but someone with kids got money, clothes, furniture, even a home. Basically it MAY come across as me complaining that kids get to much but thats not what I mean, I just mean think outside of the usual.

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Cerus98 Who's destroying and throwing away the very products they say they should be able to repair? Do you have any evidence that A) people are doing this, and B) that the devices in question still have 1st party repair as an option? If 1st party repair for any given device isn't available, and schematics, parts, and diagnostic tools aren't available to independent repair, then throwing them away is the only option left.
      Sure, all those PS4s in the video might be possible to send to Sony for repairs. But what about a stack of PS2s? Sony isn't offering repairs anymore. The only thing people can do is either "destroy" one, turn it into a donor console and pull as many good parts off of it as possible to fix as many other PS2s as possible, or throw it out.
      "And forcing them to make replacement parts available would drive up their costs tenfold. Think consoles are $$$ now? Wait til you see how expensive they are when they have to design them in a way that makes part replacement possible and the logistics behind it.
      They would literally have to create a parts department from scratch. Who is going to pay for that?"
      Okay, you clearly don't understand RTR then. RTR isn't about forcing Sony to sell parts. In this case it would just be about not allowing Sony to tell the companies that do make the parts that they can't sell them to anyone else. Louis Rossmann always uses the example of the charging chip in newer Macbooks. He doesn't want Apple to be forced to stock and sell him charge chips. He just wants to be able to go to the manufacturer of the charge chip and buy one, instead of having the manufacturer tell him "Sorry, Apple won't allow us to sell that charge chip to anyone but them." BTW, citation needed on that "tenfold" increase in costs.
      I would suggest you spend some time doing more research into what RTR is and isn't about before you go making more comments like these.

      Basically, in my family, we have about 6 chargers with USB connection and we have only 3 usable phones. This means that if I for example buy a new phone I will don't need a new charger since I have already three that I don't use. The only thing will be difficult to find out is if your phone is compatible with those chargers. But yeah, it's more Eco friendly since you will don't theoretically at least have the need to buy a new charger in this case.

    • @zhoufeng2601

    • @reedriker4772

      @@ΚώσταςΚοζαδίνος Sure that's technically 'eco-friendly', but is it REALLY though when coming from the same corporations who will melt down/recycle entire circuit boards with a single chip malfunction in a heartbeat? The costs of the resources, their extraction and emissions caused are far too great to be so wasteful but they do it anyways because less ppl buying used = more forced to buy new from them

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They _are_ helping the environment by removing chargers from the box. I certainly don't need any more chargers, I have enough of those already. The problem is how much _more_ these companies could be doing to help the environment. I offer genuine kudos to Apple for removing chargers, dirty buds, and single use plastic wrap from their iPhone boxes. Fantastic steps to reduce waste. HOWEVER, still going to call them out all the time for their anti-repair nonsense. Swapping an OEM screen from one brand new iPhone to another brand new iPhone shouldn't lock out a bunch of features. And Louis Rossmann and other Macbook repair techs should be able to go to the manufacturer of charge chips and buy charge chips instead of being told "Sorry, Apple said we can't sell this to anyone but them."
      And another thing that always seems to get ignored when people want to think they're sticking it to companies when complaining about these chargers: the chargers in the box usually sucked anyway. Apple always used to give people that crappy little 5W charger that takes FOREEEEEEVEEEEER to charge a phone. Most people were going to go buy a faster charger anyway instead of using the one that was provided. I know I did back when I still used iPhones. I still use that charger today with my Android phone because it was better than the one that came in that phone's box, too.

    In my area, the repair shop keeps these broken unfixable units to tear them into bare shells. The way they do business is if you're looking for a replacement shell for your Ps4, they will sell it to you for a cheap price. If you're looking for a heat sink or fan replacement, they will also sell it for a cheap price. It is good that they can reuse most of the parts and not just throw them away in the junk

    Funny story about my dad, he had a car that a basic part broke, he took it to the official dealer and I can't remember exact quote but £500-£700 for the PART not inc labour, he saw the same part at a local independant for £150 but isn't that well off, went online and bought from Ebay BIN for £75, from a local firm, the actual repair (he did electronics courses in the 80's and fixed loads of things like tvs and vcrs in the 90's even my games consoles) took him about 20 minutes to fix most of that was unscrewing where the part went and putting it back on as it was modular. So he saved over 10x the cost doing it himself and it was a simple repair.

These large corporations, that put this crap on the market, couldn't give two (2) hoots about the horrible e-waste footprint they are creating. With them, it's all about the profits. Repairability is something that they actually try to dissuade people from performing, and they go well out of their way to make this stuff as difficult as possible for independent repair shops to be able to repair/service. Apple wanted $300 for an out of warranty repair. Found a guy with great reviews online, who did it for $40. Took 7 days including shipping both ways (literally repaired it and shipped it out same day he got it). Hello, Steve! I'm with you almost from the start of your channel just because in Russia hard to find guide or advice for repair consoles and such. When I started I've got multimeter and solder iron with no any skills and knowledge but after years now I have pretty much experience for repairing most of electronic stuff people gave me to fix. Of course repairing is my hobby nothing more but for couple years I've got entire room in my house almost full of electronics that can't be repaired just because of there is no any parts or datasheets and this is disgusting in my opinion. This is really good electronic stuff: smart home controllers, consoles, TVs and TV boxes, single board computers, notebooks and other and other. Finally in this year in Russia appears the law exactly about the right to repair but, you know, it spends years to make this law start to work properly. Until the day when everyone can just find simple way to repair lovely electronic stuff I've hold my fist raised high for you and all who support our right to repair. Russia watching your videos, go on, Steve! We're with you!

    After watching your channel for several years, I'm sure many of those PS4 would be fixable for a reballing service. Not to be confused with "reflowing", because "reflowing" is a temporary reheat of the existing solder, while "reballing" implies soldering the main chips with new solder balls of better quality.
    Oh my gawd! The pain watching them fall 😣

      I will always remember the look on my best friends face one day we were in his Jeep, and the dials on the dash were acting up. He apologized, said it usually fixed itself after turning the car on and off repeatedly. I gave him a quizzical look, and, while maintaining eye contact, thumped the dash over the speedometer with my fist, and everything popped into place.
      The look I got, like I had just performed actual magic in from of him. It was beautiful.

    I appreciate just how important this is. Coming from the copier/printer industry where right to repair still exists, I find consumer electronics so frustrating. Perhaps we need to hit these companies in the pocketbook! Currently there is a very small fee on every item sold for post use recycling (At least in my state, Oregon) If right to repair parts and information are not available for a product then its fee should be increased dramatically to compensate for the environmental nightmare they are creating and to give these companies an incentive. I'd rather it just be required by law but if we cannot get that passed...

  • @Mallikii27
    @Mallikii27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you on the right to repair. As an electrical engineer I was taught engineering ethics in college and obviously right to repair is something any engineer should support. The one problem I see with electronics is the constantly changing nature of technology. We track product bill of materials by where in the part life cycle the components are. It’s too be expected that over a one year span, more than 25% of the parts in a PCB bill of materials goes from active to obsolete. We end up having to redesign the product with the new versions of the old parts. With that in mind I don’t know how there is a true value stream to parts when it takes 2 to 4 years before a PS4 would start needing parts. Slight differences in part characteristics means fixes wouldn’t be drop in replacements. There is more to say on this if someone is interested in discussing it more.

    I support you guys on this wholeheartedly on this! With all due respects when you're paying some of the sums you do for consumer electronics, there should be rules in place that explicitly state that you can have it repaired should a component fail, especially in a world where we're conscious of e-waste & plastic waste in general! The only reason they don't allow this is greed, if it can't be repaired then generally, it'll get replaced giving the manufacturer more profit, so it's obvious why your Apple/Sony/Microsoft/Samsungs of the world are fighting so damn hard against it! Meanwhile that object with the majority of "good" components is left to waste, all for one tiny £20 part that anyone with the right tools & competent ability can fix, it's madness.

  • @MorDreadful
    @MorDreadful 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    The issue is highlighted with machinery being able to be repaired. The issue is that people think we are greener today than a few decades ago but we are not. TVs VCRs etc used to be repaired by going to your radio shack and buying capacitors etc and even being able to get parts, now? the excuse is copyright and patent infringement. A lot of car parts for example are OEM and not original. This doesn't mean thney aren't good, they often are or will do the job relatively well. So the same should be for electronic goods. Might not be as long lasting say, but, they should be allowed to be made and fall under the same laws etc as car parts, washing machines etc. I believe Louis Rossman has highlighted this before. We are MORE wasteful and less green than we used to be.
    Take the milkman in England, they used to deliver to your door with glass bottles, they took the empties which got washed, sterilised and refilled to be used again on the next deliveries. Germany in Detm,old, Toom Markt, we took crates of coke bottles, glass, back to the hypermarket, got money OFF our next crate, Coca-cola tok those glass botles just like the milkman, washed them, sterilised them and refilled them. The customer gotr money off as each bottle returned was like a money off voucher. You do that? then there will be less bottles on the streets as, who doesn't want to save money? less plastic bottle in the oceans etc. They wouldn't need remoulding either, not tthe good ones, just wash, sterilise and refill then re-sell. But no, they harp on about fictional climate change instead all the while ignoring the REAL issues.
    We were greener back then as people took more care ovber their stuff and repaired them themselves which was cheaper. People need to go old school again.

    • @mjc0961
      @mjc0961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Was going to give you a thumbs up until I read "fictional climate change."
      If you think all of our manufacturing waste, all of our manufacturing emissions, all of our vehicle emissions, and more aren't having an impact on the climate, you're absolutely out of your mind. The evidence, the scientific studies, it's all out there to be read for anyone who is willing to read it and learn about it, rather than blindly deny it.
      If you're going to say complete nonsense like that, put it at the start of your comment next time so we don't have to read to paragraphs to discover that you're wasting our time.

Ford tried sueing a tool maker that was able to read and clear errors in the computer because it had to use copyrighted information to access the computer. (DMCA/C&D). Tesla also makes it so the consumer or 3rd party repair shops can't access the parts or software,
