So how did the Springboks seal the series? | THIRD TEST ANALYSIS | British & Irish Lions Tour 2021

  • It's all over. Morné Steyn returned to do what he was born for, taking the Springboks to a famous series win over the British & Irish Lions. So, how did South Africa achieve it, does this tell us anything about how they're building, and what did a certain Mr Russell bring to the Lions attack?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can go back to the therapist who got me over Kurtley Beale's winning try from 2012 to get cracking on Morné's latest.

I couldn't help but notice Finn's huge smile while getting hugged by Steyn after the final whistle; this was straight after Finn failed to charge down Steyn's kick that ended the game, it just shows how much he was enjoying the game, even though he was on the losing side.

I can only conclude that you're a bitter Stormers fan.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@Laurentus You're joking right? From the beginning of the 2012 season, he was kicking erratically, missing touch, and generally not doing what we all know he is capable of doing.
In the Rugby Championship, his goal kicking stats were 5/5 (Arg at home - good start), 4/8 (Arg away - we drew that game!!), 3/4 (Aus away), 1/5 (NZ away - missed 11 points, we lost by 10). He was dropped for the next game and took no part in the home leg of the game. That's not me being a disgruntled Stormers fan, that is just his kicking costing us points and games. Another player who failed to impress that year and was also dropped was Spies - that led to the inclusion of Duane Vermeulen. Again, nothing to do with the Stormers.
Not one thing I said detracts from the good things he did for us. From the first kick at goals against the Lions in '09 that won us the series, through the 2011 RWC where he was the ONLY flyhalf to master kicking the new ball they had for that tournament. He was kicking in the 80-90% where Wilkinson was 50%, leading to the infamous England cheating mini-scandal at the tournament. Steyn was brilliant, and then he stopped being brilliant, maybe even temporarily, but never really got that spark back.
Happy now? Or you want to insult me again?

I thought his graceless comments on Russell's performance were a disgrace. Can't believe the Lion's management are already talking to him about Australia in '25. In the meantime, Scotland (with Price and Russell, Hogg and VDM, Watson and the two props) v the Boks in November looks mouthwatering, provided no-one gets injured in the two matches before it. An amazing country, wonderful people and beautiful landscapes (although not without its problems, for sure)! However it really depressed me when the springboks went through their dip in form circa 2017 how many people were blaming race - positive discrimination and quotas. So quick to jump on the race bandwagon. But look at the incredible African talent available in the team in this test- Am, Mapimpi, koliisi. Your strength lies in your diversity but also your unity. Celebrate your heritage and embrace what you have. Stay proud. The rugby World is a better place when the springboks are strong. I am no expert, but I sense that the series was first and foremost a chess-game between 2 high quality coaches that were trying to out-wit each other - more particularly so Gatland.
Squidge (and the Bok coaches) said beforehand: "Gatland has chosen a 'running team'". It seems to me that Gatland then thought "I (may have) outwitted them" and went the other route. One can criticize Gatland, or one can praise Rassie (sorry, I mean Jacques, not). I somehow lean towards praising Erasmus: The Boks seemed ready for whatever Gatland's game-plan was going be on any of the days.

Finn's kicking for touch from penalties was way better than Biggars aswell, alot of kickers not just Biggar don't try and carve enough metres when kicking for touch
This is especially important when kicking near the 5 metre line, so many times I see other kickers just kick it out 10-15 metres from the line making it so much more difficult to maul over, 5 metres out the maul is well on

Reinach reacts quickly too, running in 'support' with a little blocking run. Also though you can't really see it at that angle, Luke evades a tackle on his way through (he was just incredible this tour).

Having looked and Morne I think nostalgia and creating fairytales is part of the Springboks DNA.
    2007 Os Durant
    2015 Victor Matfield
2019 Frans Steyn and Schalk Britz
    2021 Morné Steyn.
Like having an inspirational captain these fairytales galvanise the team, to play for more than them selfs.
It inspires the next generation but also the current generation that might have given up hope of again being a springbok.
It inspires the players in France/Japan/England to dream and believe I'm only 29 one-day I can still become a bok.
