  • Eric starts the day with spraying the few acres of cotton he planted the day before and gets straight into the cotton planting. After 2 full days of planting cotton, he just has a little over 200 acres left to plant, for the first time! Eric is planting DeltaPine seed. He gives his opinion on planting cotton on different row widths.

I've debated a lot on going 30 inch cotton for the same reason, using same planter and Y-Drop rig. Biggest down fall is header maintenance on the picker. Even worse if your much size lol. And in some cases with rains later in the growing season it's a risk of boll rot from lack of air flow but not a every year deal. And a picker on 40s vs 30s means 5ft of production a pass difference. Long as plenty of picker power nothing to worry

We always clean out our headers of the morning so we don’t have any trouble during the day. We are able to roll the heads out for ease of service. You are correct on the boll rot but we have never experienced that because of our management style. We get get on top of things when it comes time to mature the crop out and get it harvested.

@@TheCropCritic 30s can be slide but not as far as wide row, trust me I know. I set pickers every year. Usually 30-35 pickers during the summer. I personally like to clean my headers out very well in the morning then around doffers and moisture pads half way of the day when I grease.

I’m curious about the operation of that tractor. Nothing like the ones I’ve driven. I see you change direction with your left hand. And you move with the joystick. But how do you stop? You’re too smooth and quick for me to tell.

You can stop by pushing in the clutch or by pulling back on the joystick. It all operates so smooth it’s hard to see what’s actually going on.
