So basically Ellen attempted to place pamen inside of her son but he committed suicide before The Possession could actually take place, therefore she moved on to grandchildren but Annie refused to let her see Peter and therefore she devised a plan to temporarily place pamen inside of Charlie and release pamen from Charlie into Peter, every single thing that happened to this family was planned, Charlie's death was very strategic, and Joan's ritual was a way of convincing Annie to allow the possession of Peter

    • @Misunao23

Ellen was a cult leader who entrusted Joan to carry out her plans even after she died. It all started with Ellen trying to have Paimon possess her husband and then her son and then her grandchildren. Annie believed this all to be hereditary mental illness until she learned her mother was a demonic cult leader. It shows the very real fear for Annie that she may have or will inherit her mother’s mental illness and poor parenting skills only to show that she was mistaken the entire time. It’s absolutely brilliant.

This entire film is severely underrated. This is the best horror film of our era hands down.

    • @koanikal
      @koanikal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

DEFINITELY severely underrated. This film will be (if not already) studied in film schools. I have no doubt of that. Toni Collette's performance is a rare thing to witness in film. I'd say the same about Alex Wolff to a large degree (who is definitely an actor with a very bright future ahead). But Toni's performance. What a magnum opus really. I'd think a little differently about how she was robbed, a few years ago, and just chalk it up to the Academy never being accepting of the Horror genre no matter what... But... then they put Get Out up for a Best Picture nomination. That broke a precedent. So why was Hereditary not even CONSIDERED for any awards the year after that? Soundtrack? Oscar worthy. Lead Actress? Oscar worthy. Cinematography? Oscar worthy. Screenplay? Oscar worthy. The Academy is a joke. But hasn't it always been? To this day I still LOVE that Marlon Brando and George C. Scott rejected their Oscars. Fuck the Academy. Especially after this non-consideration for one of the most intense well written and well filmed movies of our generation. Never mind it being a horror, how about all of the other technical aspects that made this movie a masterpiece?

Oh and yes Alex Wolf’s performance was so so good. Hereditary goes beyond just a horror film and that’s what makes it so special. I loved that we are able to connect with the entire family so we ride that roller coaster right down into hell with them.

In my 44 years of existence no movie has unsettled me this much. The movie Happiness (not horror) had a near similar effect, but this movie... I actually stopped it after the incident with Charlie, and it wasn't necessarily the incident itself, but Alex Wolff's convincing portrayal of absolute shock. I wasn't sure I could continue watching it. Especially after he pulled into the driveway. I actually told some people I know not to watch it (because I knew them well enough to know they definitely would not be able to handle it). I was pretty high when I first saw that scene, so I figured it just amplified the experience. I ended up continuing to watch it a couple days later and that was a very good decision. But, if a movie can move me so deeply (in a disturbed-to-my-core direction) that I don't feel I can continue watching, that right there is a good measure of a good film, IMO.

Listening to Toni Collette’s interview, she described this movie as having no positive message and it being a hopeless situation. I love how she explained it- the whole movie has that vibe. A family plagued by misfortune and it ultimately causes their undoing- take away the plot and the demonic cult, and you can see the metaphor behind it. If you’ve grown up in a broken family with mental illness, this movie will resonate with you.

Did anyone notice that the man in the circle, the one wearing yellow, is the same man seen in the attic at the end before Peter jumps? Also, I did notice at 2:25 that Joan and some of the other looked at an empty chair in the circle, probably signifying that Paimon is there in the room. If you look closely, those people are not looking at the counselor, but the chair...

And we were pretty much, estranged before that.. so..
It really wasn't a huge blow..
    But, i..... did.. love, her..--
And she didnt have a easy life. She had DID witch became extreme.. at the end..
    And dementia, and
My father died when I was a baby; from starvation.
Uh, kuz he had psychotic depression..
And he starved himself witch I'm sure is as pleasant as it sounds..
And then there's my brother; my older brother, had schizophrenia..
And when he was 16 he hung himself in my mother's bedroom and of course the suicide note blamed her...
Accusing her of putting people inside him.. So..
    That was my moms life.
Then she lived in my house before hospices. And we wouldn't talk.
But then we would, then we didnt. Then we would, then we didnt..
Until my husband finally enforced a no contact rule.
Witch lasted until I adopted my daughter, witch she immediately tried to stick her claws into....
    And I just....
    I felt guilty agin. X2
As if she was even my mom... at the end..
But I still felt guilty. Not that she would ever feel guilty about.. anything...
I dont wanna put anymore stress on my family..

It's been several months since I posted this scene, and I'm really glad I did, because it's attracting the true film buffs since it's such a low key scene that your average moviegoer isn't going to seek out. I felt it was a good primer without giving much away. What more does Toni Collette need to do to get a nomination at least for f***'s sake? 20 years from now, I'll still feel she was robbed. And to top it off, this was almost 2 minutes of un-cut monologue. That's impressive. And this performance here is just the TIP of the iceberg, the aftermath of the THE SCENE (you know the one if you've watched Hereditary) after the party, and the dinner table scene are what solidifies my opinion of her deserving at least a nomination. I tried to give as little spoilers as possible by showcasing this particular scene, from early on in the film, though I'd love to've added those other scenes, but I want people to go into watching this the first time at least somewhat blind. I made it a point not to even watch a trailer, when I first watched this film. Going in mostly blind is the best approach.

      THE DINNER SCENE!!
That was where I became mesmerized by her performance!
Yes, her heartbreaking screams of grief after finding her daughter's body was amazing acting, but she had to emote! she put her emotions out there and then on a dime she pulled it all back!
That dinner scene is a lesson in acting (actually, by all 3 actors in that scene) as well as a lesson in directing.

Her mom's spirit casually watching and judging in that empty chair is a nice touch xD they did a good job at conveying the fact her Mother is domineering even when she's invisible you can feel her staring through Annies soul annoyed by the fact that she's still alive and not suffering Condemned by Paimons side and influence. The mother clearly got involved in some crap beyond her abilities and was heavily used by the King to become soul food. Its funny because one of the real guidelines in the occult realm is to enter into it with a strong mind and a light heart. This is a good movie that shows the horrific outcomes of a woman abusing the occult and her family paying the consequences of that. Her deluded ass probably read about wealth and etc and thought she was blessing all of them in er own morbid way. At the end it shows they are shrouded in a void blackness meaning they are transported into the abyss. They are literally all burning in Hell as servants. Think about it they are all stuck in that exact moment forever in a treehouse with mutilated corpses. Most of them are also old and etc if they truly did get blessed they would have been empowered. Instead they are now stuck there and eternity. And thst one young dude who betrayed Peter pretending to be his friend is now stuck with naked old people for all of eternity.. only Joan and the dead bodies were fully clothed LMAO. I remember crying of laughter when I came to this realization 😂

I've watched this film over a dozen times, and I never made that connection, or even paid much attention to the empty chair. Great catch. As is the case with Stanley Kubrick, I don't think there is a single miniscule detail in an Ari Aster film that isn't 100% intentional. Both are hyper-meticulous. Though, at least Aster has apparently found a way to avoid having to create an intensely stressful on-set environment to elicit an intense performance from his actors (unlike Kubrick, or another favorite of mine, Billy Friedkin RIP). I'd really like to have heard Friedkin's opinion of Ari Aster's approach to filmmaking, and the end results. Martin Scorsese's glowing opinion of Ari Aster is good enough though.

I think it was this scene that told me I was in for something different with this film. It's just sheer realism (not Hollywood reality, which is adjacent but not connected to actual reality) in a way I hadn't seen in a movie in a long time (maybe I don't watch enough movies). And it's this groundedness that makes the supernatural elements so much more terrifying.

Possibly. I’m not saying it is or isn’t.
The group therapy also shows there’s members of her group and society around her who don’t care about her or her children as people. They only care about Paimon and his birth. She’s in a very vulnerable place and she bares her soul but her feelings don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, just what the cult members need her for. She’s talking about how horrible her mother is yet in a group about bereavement she’s surrounded by people who supported her mother, their leader.

Plus big foreshadowing piece they mentioned her brother was 16 and Peter was 16 so that meant Paimon really wanted to have his time scheduled correctly and they probably follow ancient rules so 16 was the age of adulthood for them

I think she blames herself for bringing her unhealthy side of the family into her husband and children’s lives, because when her mother did stuff like stab hooks into Charlie she felt like that was her fault, her innocent family suffered at the hands of Annie’s unhealthy family, she felt that if your family is *THAT* psychotic maybe it would’ve been better if she had never made relationships with anyone, that maybe a family this demented deserves to be alone

People relax with the oscars. Oscars go to basic movies with no real artistic value 99% of the time. It’s a crowd pleasing thing and a Hollywood charade so people can dress up and marvel. Once every ten years they will award an actual good film like they did with Parasite but the whole institution is a sham in general. It means squat that this movie and performance were not awarded, its probably for the best the oscars had nothing to do with such a profound film.

I think it's unfair to tear down other movies or performers because Toni was robbed. She's amazing and will get her award one day and even if she didn't it wouldn't make her less talented.

I've never gotten the impression that people thinking she was robbed of a nomination had anything to do with them thinking others should be "unfairly torn down". That's a very odd projection. At no point was it ever "why was so and so nominated and not Toni Collette". It's never been about the others who were actually nominated. I have not once seen a single comment along those lines, in this comment thread. We're just saying she should have gotten a nomination, but horror is VERY much overlooked in considerations for Academy Awards. That's the point. It wasn't an attack on any other actors performances. On a side note, the Academy Awards are for the most part a farce anyway, so I'm not like actually angry that she didn't get a nomination, just disappointed that the Academy often has a bias towards horror, regardless of the performances. But yes, there have been some very rare exceptions over the years.

I've heard of this movie I know it's been highly rated - just got a really bad feeling watching some trailers and reviews - it kinda reminds me of the Vibe off Rosemary's Baby - sick betrayal personal conspiracy the support group was even creepy . Paimon ? Does he actually show ? is he actually satanic or one of those rogue demons of the abyss lurking in the emptyness of the Cosmos ? Really don't think I've got the balls for this one .

Generational curses, satanic strongholds, and occultism in families are no joke. But there is deliverance in Jesus Christ.

ellen was a monster like no other. If Annie had only stood up to her mother. Charlie would be alive because Charlie would not have been possessed and the cult would have never have found Annie, yet we would never have had a movie. The support group is the cult judging from my analysis
