I consider myself a super-genius, but swabing the fuel lines is something that has never crossed my mind. Good job sharing! Subscribed.

Great video.. I agree. I learned on returned equipment when a clean carb came back with fine black specks in the bowl. The fuel line was deteriorating and I never considered that before. Now, I replace the lines and filter as a routine.

i changed all my small engines to the yellow ethanol resistant fuel lines years ago, over 10 years ago. lines still in excellent shape. no deteriation at all. no hardening or swelling.

I had the same thing happen on an LT160 I was working on. A year before I replaced the fuel lines I replaced the fuel filter because it was clogged and the engine wouldn't start. A year later it came back with the same issue. I noticed the filter was clogged again and I took it off, looked inside the lines and there was a ton of cracking on the inside. A rubber chunk had broken off and clogged the filter.

I own a golf cart that would stop running after being driven 1/2 mile or more. Troubleshooting the problem drove me crazy. In desperation, I replaced the fuel pump, but that didn't solve the problem. It turned out that the damn red plastic fuel shotoff had deteriorated inside and wouldn't let but a trickle of gasoline to get to the engine.

Fuel lines and filter are two of the first things that I replace on a small engine. Sometimes I even pressure test them after I install them to make sure the tank hold pressure and releases vacuum. On chainsaws and other two cycles this is almost imperative if they are old. I uses oem factory fuel lines on my saws and Tygon on everything else. Even with theses I pressure test them with my Mighty Vac. A lot of times chainsaw gas tanks can develop small cracks.. If I find one I either replace the tank or seal it up with Seal All. You cand find leaks with a soapy water mix. If the tank is leaking off pressure the saw will not run correctly, especially at idle. It expects the tank to hold 7.# of pressure. I have seen, even new tanks leak around the seams on the tank.

I had a Briggs 500 series only a few years old, no start. Wasn't getting fuel. The rubber fuel line was completely collapsed inside.

1/4" fuel line is cheap to buy, and every real small engine guy (DIY or Pro) should have a roll of it.
My method is: Filter replacement every year (or 50 hours), and fuel line replacement every other season.
Just good practice, and eliminates that factor in your diagnosis should there be a fuel problem.
    Keep 'em coming, Jeremy!!

Good job. I have never thought about doing that. From now on when I change the fuel filter I will check the inside of fuel line. Thanks for the information.

Most certainly! I've worked on walk behinds after another shop, needle not sealing flooding caused by the black gritty stuff from not changing the fuel line. Rinse the tank and change the fuel line as part of the service.

Great info on the business side of things, recommending to bill out the time and not guaranteeing the service if not completed. Really good call.

Are there any modern materials used for fuel lines that are more chemical resistant? And affordable? And also are there any transparent fuel lines so you can see if there's a problem or debris?

  • @ksben0016

Mercedes used metal fuel lines. That’s probably why they lasted a million miles. I bet if u swabbed new rubber lines u would get some of that as well - maybe after a week of running though. I say yes to all metal fuel lines haha.
