    I've was lucky enough to come across Sixto shortly after he was first released in Australia . People talk about Bob Dylan being this amazing artist but he has absolutely nothing on Sixto in my opinion. The emotional intensity and depth of Sixto's sound and lyrics are second to none. He is a true artist and deserves the recognition that was far to long in coming

      I agree with you and your views; l love Bob Dylan, yet he's no better than Rodriguez in my. opinion; and Bob lacks the humility of Rodriguez big time!

      Absolutely! Sixto's play of words go beyond that of Dylan, or Lennon. But I totally agree with the fact that Sixto remained true to his humanity. Never let the failure of his early musical career ruin him, and the fame and success he tasted later in life get the better of him. A true master. I cried watching the Searching for Sugarman. I'm crying now listening to my favorite song. Thank you, Sixto. Rest in Freedom. From the Philippines.

    One of the most genius artists and desperately decent, humble musicians of this century. Doctor Rodriquez, Wayne University is indeed honoured to name you a Humanities Ph.D alumni. I honour you with this, one of your finest, most painful songs, every Christmas.

    Discovered this song only a couple years ago and was immediately transported back to my very childhood in the very early 70's. It's amazing how just the sound of a particular song that you've never heard in your life can be instantly identified to a specific time. This song is a gem wrapped up inside a time capsule.
    I wonder how many listeners younger than Gen X will get the now historical reference to planting flowers.

    • @vs52217
      @vs52217 ปีที่แล้ว

      What does it mean?

    • @Alsatia28
      @Alsatia28 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vs52217it's a counter culture / Vietnam War reference. Some of the war protesters of the time were know as flower children (hippies).
      Sometimes during a protest, they would hand out flowers to the police officers or later the National Guard troops there tasked with keeping order. Part of "make love, not war".
      But in this song, that youthful optimism and hope has waned and the singer laments that, as nice as that sentiment is, passing out flowers isn't doing much to turn the tide of problems beating down the country. Things were in great turmoil at the time.
      Above all, this song is about losing hope and losing the fight against growing jaded and cynical.

    Dusting off my old records from early '80s. So many memories of pot-induced clouded parties. Saw him in Australia. He's up there with Cohen, Dylan, Tindersticks as a lyricist. A friend described him as a cynic, and that's true but I also I feel the despair from songs like Cause that can bring me to tears. "how many times can you wake up in this comic book and plant flowers?".

    Love the song and artist, we hung out and lived intensely together in the late 90's and early 00's in the Cass Corridor of Detroit.. My building manager of Sheridan Court Paul Steele was Rodriguez's best friend, Paul had a jam room in an old coal bin in the basement.. Paul and i became serious friends and artistic collaborators in the 90's and thats when i met and befriended Rodriguez.. he walked all over our dangerous neighborhood, he showed up while we were painting landscapes in the city.. Many hours jamming in the basement, rooftop and more, much philosophizing.. Sony kept him on the back burner all those years w a promise to sometime make a movie about him.. Those were intense and important times.. I was and still work hard to save the planet, Detroit and more but the world is so manipulated in every sense.. I told everyone the tipping point for global warming action was passing 20 years ago.. We can still do something but i am tired of being abused by the art world, music industry, Detroit, the USA and more..

    The man was a lyrical genius. Looking back to the days when we could have a casual conversation, walking through the neighborhood, it would have been a great time to talk about his lyrics and the experiences behind them. I remember him playing a song or two at local clubs... But I really didn't know his songs until the time when us Detroiters learned he was famous, then we could find his music online and I eventually bought some CDs... and he was a little harder to catch up with.

The man's humble demeanor puts so many artists to shame! Love Bob Dylan, but he's very arrogant; just watch Don't look back film; so arrogant it's disgusting. He's an asshole to work with, according to many musicians.
