  • The first impressions of the SOG Flash MT are very good. This could genuinely compete with the Leatherman skeletool.
    some additional minor qualms:
    * T6 pivot screws are 💩, should be T8 minimum
    * the bottle opener is a real afterthought, could have been done better

    For me, I wish they just had the pliers, the blade and a fixed, built in Phillips at the end of one handle and a fixed flat head/pry bar at the end of the other handle. I know it limits the versatility but I feel that 95% of people need either a flat head or Phillips 95% of the time. If I’m in a situation that I need an Allen or a torx, it’s unlikely that I will have the right size if I only have two bits on me.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They did nearly exactly that with the reactor but the torque on the arm would bend the frame..This is actually a design that will hold up over time. And if the bits wear out..its not too hard to replace them.

      You raise a very good point, Collin. I have often heard multitool (MT} presenters saying that you can carry all the extra bits in your toolbox... Now, if you have to carry a toolbox with you with all the extra parts for your MT, you don't need the MT. Use the dedicated tools (like Phillips head screwdriver), in the toolbox. The MT is what you reach for when you DON'T have a toolbox, or a dedicated set of woodworking tools, or mechanics' tools. If you are going to build a cabinet or overhaul the lawn mower motor, the last thing you reach for is a MT!

      @@Billhumphreys3370 definitely agree, I think what I probably should have done is show just how compact both of those items are vs other edc items. I'm not saying you carry the screwdriver...but it s really nice to have integration across many different tools.

  • @Ice_Berg

    Does it really matter that the extra bits from the screwdriver are cross compatible for the vast majority of people? I think for almost everyone the Phillips/slotted bit will be more useful to actually carry with the tool, and if you are carrying the screwdriver in addition to a multitool, why does it matter if the multitool can use the same bits? You already have the screwdriver.

      there are quite a lot of circumstances (like dismantling multitools) where you need a screwdriver on each side. this sort of thing means you can carry a sog in the pocket and a hoto screwdriver in a bag or backpack and not need yet another tool if you need to attack something from both sides.

    Just picked one of these Flash MTs up on AE for $36. Goes great with my Roxon KS2E. Both 3.4" closed and less than 5 oz. Very complimentary set of tools. Great pliers and bigger assisted locking D2 blade on the SOG. Large flathead as well. Great scissors, saw, smaller blade, Phillips, awl, can opener on the KS2 Elite. You are looking at D2 or 4116 for most of the tools. Both use 4mm double sided bits. SOG has the better holder but if longer reach is needed, you can slip the adapter on the KS2E in line Phillips. For $74 combined, it's hard for me to think of a better combination of EDC/pocket carry blade, scissors, pliers, saw, drivers and awl.

    Dig the pliers, not too thrilled about the rest.
    All looks a bit to gimmicky...
    Don't understand the need for assisted opening. The lock is nice, but a regular liner lock should give a bit of hold when closed, so it should never 'just open'.
    All that empty space in the handle is baffling. Like they just stripped all the tools out of a regular SOG and went 'there, its minimal and lightweight now.' though it does give some mod options, I also appreciate buyin a finished product.
    And the plastic of the bitstorage looks like it'll last about a year. Also adding a couple of quite fiddly looking steps to just being able to use the screwdriver would just get on my nerves

    I just want to throw out my 2 cents on D2. There's a lot of misinformation going around about that grade of steel. A lot of products being imported from overseas that are supposedly D2 are actually mystery metal, probably some low grade high carbon steels that rust like crazy. My knife collection, about 5,000, contains several hundred blades made of D2, and I have never had any rusting issues, even on the ones I forgot to take out of their leather sheaths for many months. Just my opinion, but I've found it to be an excellent performing blade steel, holds an edge longer than plain carbon steel and way better rust resistance.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The D2 from SOG is indeed D2...but even K110 is not even remotely an idea steel for general edc tasks. D2 IS severely lacking in both toughness and corrosion resistance. That's not opinion, that's backed up by tons of scientific data. I highly prefer more well rounded steels like AEBL, NitroV and 14c28n. I agree though it's a big step up from something like 1095

    • @wyattroncin941
      @wyattroncin941 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxlvledc that depends on what you consider to be EDC tasks and what you consider the most important aspents of a good knife steel. if chopping copper wire and battonning wood are your EDC tasks, it's not a fantastic option. if you cut a lot of abrasive materials, D2 is a good option. if you work at sea, corrosion resistance is key. if you use utility knives or a replaceable blade system, 420C is exactly your ideal steel.

Why would you ever use the multi tool as a bit driver when you can just use the actual screwdriver and get way better ergonomics? I get carrying them both but I don't see how the combo of the tools is any more functional than the screwdriver and skeletool.

So a slight downside (also the pliers handle is a bit less comfortable as well).
      But the Flash is still great for edc, because it gives you a better knife and clip than the PP (also the pliers don’t flop open). I pair it with something like a Victorinox Compact or Pioneer X for scissors and other tools.

    I'd carry that prytool you have along with the MT, so you're not prying with any part of the MT. The lanyard hole looks like if there was a lanyard in it, the lanyard would interfere with the knife blade function. The lanyard hole looks too small for 550 paracord. 3 strand micro would work. A temporary lanyard would be good if using the pliers in high places or over water. Light summer carry. Same pricepoint as a Leatherman Rebar, and It's 20 bucks more than a SOG Powerpint.

      I totally agree $24 plus for a set it’s a win win for Leatherman. The only thing I don’t know about their bit sets are they made in the USA or overseas. I do know that some multi tools can use them if there is enough room for them to fit in. The 4mm bit was copy righted for years I guess it ran out because they were always said to be a security bit.
