Yes a lovely song. I think it really suited the 1073, it had a 70s feel to it. This was a time when the 1073 was the go to pre amp for those giant mixing desks. Giant Ashtray full of dog ends anyone!
Good lord I have used and owned a lot of 1073 pres including this one. Never could put a finger on what bothered me about them. I think they are too thick! Serious buildup in the low mids in this demo. That 88LRB sounds freaking amazing. Thanks for the demo! I am gonna order one. The mix is so musical and open with the 88. Night and day.
@@alecbrits I guess your demo really got me to spend some money - you should get some royalities from the manufacturers for your great advertisment ;-) Maybe I'll get the 88R LB too since it offers something different. I was thinking of the API 512c, but maybe I'll rather go with the 88R LB as alternative. For very clean stuff I already have an SSL 500 Six Cannel. It's great that Neumann re-launched the U-67. It's expensive, yes, but it's brand new and not used without a guarantee. And they exactly copied the original specs. This is very tempting.
First off Alex, thank you for your very insightful videos. I know a lot of hard work was done behind the scenes. One additional thing I noticed is the transients on the 88R are faster on the drums vs the 1073 which has a little more relaxed sound. Though both are good, with my studio current setup with all ready having a Manley Voxbox and other gear, the 88R I am more attracted to.
Thank you so much! :) I would say they are similar in that they don’t get in the way. However the 88RLB the feels like it allows for more depth, slightly softer tone and an extended bottom end compared to the Audient. I’m a big fan of the tone of the 88RLB. :)
Great VDO man, thanks. I have owned the AMS Neve1073 LB and thought it sounded great until I got the BAE 73 MPL and much prefer the more vintage sounding (Warm or dull) BAE. Would love to try the 88R LB one day.
Hey Sam! Do you feel that Bae has smoother upper mids than Ams 1073lb? I had Ams 1073 dpa with u87ai and i thought that sound was too strident and sharp in the high mids.
I did use a U87ai with my 1073lb and found what you said to be true, hence why I prefer the BAE, but the U87 does have the mide range push. I now use a u47 clone from Nordic Audio with the BAE 73mpl, Ive gotten great results.
Channel splitters usually cause impedance loading interaction between connected pre-amps. You can test your channel splitter by connecting something like a Cloud Lifter Variable Z to one pre-amp then passing a tone through the splitter into the connected pre's and listen when you vary the impedance on the pre-amp with the CL variable Z if it effects the other connected pre-amp(s). Very nice song by the way - very well performed.
In your song you seem to have preferred the 88r for more transient sources and the 1073 for less transient sources. Can you explain why? Would love a follow up video actually A/Bing the two pres on the same instrument in solo
Hi Dean! :) thanks for commenting. I preferred the 88R on all sources, I found it had a little more of an open tonality that got me to the intended result quicker. Sometimes you want to have something that is a little softer, thicker and harmonically rich to soothe the upper mids of some more aggressive sources, and that’s where the 1073 comes in and really helps. I think hearing the full production is a healthy way of hearing the full effect of each circuit spread across a production, rather than isolated instances. But that’s just me! Hope this answers your questions Dean! :)
I find your videos very useful, subbed. and you making some really great music as well. Very relaxing to watch your videos with lots of great information to..

Nice one. Would love to hear the Neve 1073 next to a BAE 1073. There is surprisingly little out there with samples on how they are different and similar.
Thank you! :) I’m a little hesitant to go down the road of comparing units that are trying to do the same thing at the moment. That 88R preamp is incredible... I've always heard great things about the preamps in those consoles but I'm really surprised at how great the 500 series version sounded. Such an underrated pre. In my opinion, it smoked the 1073 LB on everything (except for bass, where I liked the 1073's extra fatness). The depth and clarity of the mix took a quantum leap forward with the 88R. Maybe I'll have to pick myself up a few :)
Luckily, I've had an opportunity to work on both boards. I've always found going straight from the pre into the box is the best sound for guitars and bass. Very little e.q. just to pull extra stuff out, and usually a gate for the drums. Working on a handful of different consoles, imo the 88R is in a league of it's own, it's unfair in a way, because nothing else sounds like it.
Beautiful work, Alec. I've just watched several videos, and through my Dynaudio BM6A's and Klipsch sub, I liked every 1073 labeled product the best. Warm, punchy AND inviting, perhaps the closest to my old MCI JH116 two inch tape machine. I need to upgrade my computer and interface (currently Antelope Zen Studio and early 2015 macbook pro). After watching your videos, I'm leaning toward a 2020 M1 mac 64 gig ram and 4TB M. Thinking the 1073opx would be great as an interface (maybe the Neumann as a close second, sonically) Thank you for the fantastic music to help me decide!
I wonder how much EQ you did in post. did you leave everything raw? cause it sounds very tidy. I wonder because other than more lows and highs on the 88's I don't hear a lot of differences, and i'm missing that 3-5db boost 73 usually has on 5-6K. in fact is sounds like that boost is on the 88. I almost feel like you got the channels mixed up.
Hi Alec. I'm in a quandary - I've the 1073DPX and am looking to get another couple of pres. I'm torn between a pair of API 312s or Neve 88rlbs...any thoughts and insights are greatly appreciated. Love your work, my friend!
Hello, I have a question. Could you explain why some people have two preamp or equalizer units while others only have one? Is it possible to record or mix audio with a single 500-series compressor or preamp?
I feel the 88r pre’s have a more of an open tone, more forgiving on the top end. I really enjoy how tracks sound when they are stacked up, like BVS and drums. Big fan of the 88R.
Great comparison! I own both pre’s (and a Manultec Orca Bay too!) and you really can’t go wrong with either one. Beautiful studio and great recording 👍
Sounds great. My preference is the 88 RLB. How's the clarity and depth compared to the 511? The clips I've head of the 511 sound much clearer and open than the 1073.
Fuller agree with you there. :) I’ve not spent time with the 511’s. But I can imagine them to be more open. They don’t have Two transformers, but you can dial in the saturation to match what you want. Big fan of the RND stuff. :)
I have not done a side by side comparison, but I would imagine they are very similar. :) I felt like I was using my 1073 when using the 1073LB. It has the vibe that I’m looking for in spades.
nice song and recordingfs, but in a nutshell i would like to know whats the real differene between neve 511 or neve 1073lb. being almost double priced?
The RND only has one transformer, more open tone with the open of dialling in how much saturation you want with the silk. The RND also has a great variable hpf. The 1073 LB is $300 dollars more. Two transformers. Not too sure why the prices are that far apart. :)
am I missing something...was this an A/B shootout? different instruments were going through different preamps simultaneously, sooo...how do we differentiate per source? too much going on! 😢
Hey Bobby, hearing the cumulative effect is a really powerful and fast way to hear the character of a mic pre. In the future there will be a way to access the stems and make your own choices.
Amazing review and song as always!! You're channel will be blowing up before you know it. Which do you prefer on male vocal, the Flea 49 or U67? Is the 67 a reissue? Cheers!!🍻
Thank you so much Phill! :) I don’t have a preference really. I have purchased the 67’s, but the next purchase will be a pair of 49’s. I am using the re-issue 67.
Say I wanted to record analogue kick drum? Which one should I go for? Say I wanted to record the whole mix throught a few of these, which one should I go for?
It’s hard to give you an answer for both of these questions. If you are looking for a pre that is going to give you a lot of character and some tasteful distortion when pushed, then the 1073 is the way to go. If you would like to have a versatile pre with a lovely tone that’s well represented across a very wide palette of sources, then the 88RLB is the option out of these two. :)
It does not mean you NEED two, if you are using two mics, then two pre’s will do the trick. You can compress in the DAW till you find what kind of compression works for you.
I like your videos, but may I please make a small request. When doing shoutouts where your recording multiple different sources individually, could you please possibly either make some segments showing just the solo'd sources, or possibly include download files that we could download to listen to ourselves? If not I understand, I know videos like this are alot of work. But either way, great job and I still really like them!
Totally different issues for both. I have purchased the 67’s first, but saving for a pair of 49’s next. The 67’s are SO versatile. I’ll do a review video on them soon!
@@alecbrits I am building up my mic locker as well buts it’s so much prioritizing to be done. Do I get good tube mics or maybe classic ribbons? Should I put that on ice and finally get a stereo set of distressors or should I spend som ekstra money on new fancy plugins? Hahah, luckily I own pretty good outboard and mics already, but I want MOREE.
We will never stop buying pieces of gear. Just figure out what will save you time and boost your creativity. That should always be the primary objective. :)
Hey Alec, am new to 500 series modules, could you suggest me a good EQ module (preferably passive EQ, am open to other types too) that is not too expensive?, my music genre is similar to what you do.
Hey Jasper! :) thanks for the question. I would lean towards an API 550A. It’s aromatic always what’s needed. You can of course go for a similar styled unit too.
@@alecbrits You mean something like a Class A 3 band EQ?. I have been eyeing a bit on the Lindell Audio PEQ-501a and the sound skultptor EQP-501. Do you know or have heard of these 2 modules ?
I'm just curious: when you say the splitter has iso output then it sounds like that output has a transformer in the signal path. That might alter the signal. It is also possible to do this kind of configuration with just a y-cable. Then it is 100% sure that the signals are identical. Anyway, great video! Keep it up!
How do you think these compare with the phoenix audio Ascent? I know pheonix is sometimes described like a never but with a more open sound , how does it sound compared to the 88? Is the 88 thicker /brighter? Curious how you have experienced them and what you think of the 3 in terms of warmth / brightness. I am curious about these products myself Thanks for any help
Thanks for the comment! :) they are different beasts, the ascent also gives you the opportunity to EQ and tone shape on the same unit. I’d likely put the 88 closer to the ascent than the 73.
Would you say the 73, then 88, then ascent from darkest to brightest? I listened to your ascent video bs this one tough to say since they are not the same recording but it seems more open up top in general . Little more pointed on the high end, whereas these may be rounder. I like a warm rounded tone so idk maybe I’d prefer the neve. Though frankly I was lookin at the 517 . Have you ever tried the older Phoenix audio Pres? I saw those a big cheaper and idk if they are infact a lot noiser than the current ones, since noise reduction was apparently one of the benefits of the new ones
Hello Alec! Would you say that there is a well defined difference between the U87 and the U67? I currently have a U87ai and was wondering if its worth to get a 67.
Hi Y Reyes! :) there is a pretty big difference between the two mics for sure. The 87 has a boost in the upper mids that sometimes makes the voice feel a little too forward or harsh. The 67 is a more forgiving or smoother sounding microphone. It’s a little more versatile because of that. :)
Great review! But honestly you need to tone down your writing skills for these vids. 😅 I totally forgot about the preamps…what a track! Amazing songwriting skills! Is it available anywhere? Couldn’t find it. All the best
Thanks so much! :) the tunes are starting to come out soon. Wrapping up the demo process currently, then it’s gonna be straight into record mode from there.
Hi! if you had to choose one pair to record mostly stereo acoustic guitars, piano and percussion , like ( bongos, cajon, etc ) which one do you recommend ? RND511 or Neve 88R lb ? thank you very much !
Love the video and really helped me decide to get both the 1073LB and 88R, into my 500r8, I'd love to get your opinion on this, I am single production artist who does majority guitar & elektron A4 tracking but mostly running samples from my DAW to my outboard for "refinement" do you think a single unit of the above pre's is sufficient? I am looking for a compact multi-use box and I am thinking of using the other slots for a zhal eq1 and some compressors and perhaps a reverb, any advice is appreciated.
Hey Lewis, thanks for the comment. I would potentially look into getting a pair of matched units to be able to process stereo stems. Running things through pre’s will help the effect, but perhaps not as much as eq/compression will.
Thank you for your great video! I’m thinking a lot about NEVE88RLB, because of versatility and open sound, but especially DI input. I have already quite a lot of mic preamps, and Today I would like to get a preamp with DI for bass guitar etc… (pop/rock) so do you think NEVE88RLB can be a good choice between (API/BAE/portico etc… )? Or any other recommendations ? Many thanks
I think there are a lot of great options really. The 88RLB will not let you down. If you already have a good selection of mic pre’s then I would look into some different DI box options. REDDI, Radial, Motown, RND and Avalon (there are a lot more, but I can’t list them all here!). This way you can pair them with different pre’s from clean to dirty and really get the tone you are looking for per production.
Thanks a lot for your answer🙏. i actually use radial active and passive DI, and BSS DI. Looks good the REDDI, and I didn’t know about Motown DI ! Thank you , Looks really cool. Yes it’s a good idea to get more « dirty» ones ! Thanks again for everything and your videos ! Very nice sound and nice songs !

Hi Alec. I'm in a quandary - I've the 1073DPX and am looking to get another couple of pres. I'm torn between a pair of API 312s or Neve 88rlbs...any thoughts and insights are greatly appreciated. Love your work, my friend!
Hey Michael!
I would highly recommend the API 512V as a complimentary pre to the neves. :) they are right at the top of my “To Get” list.
Hello, I have a question. Could you explain why some people have two preamp or equalizer units while others only have one? Is it possible to record or mix audio with a single 500-series compressor or preamp?
Mono is one channel, stereo is two. :)
Great review and a big thank you. Question, how similar is the AMS Neve 88R pre to your Auident pres on your desk?
I feel the 88r pre’s have a more of an open tone, more forgiving on the top end. I really enjoy how tracks sound when they are stacked up, like BVS and drums. Big fan of the 88R.
Nice desk! Is it from chunkystudiofurniture ?
Yeah!! :D
Both sound great but 88 is a bit brighter ,thanks for this nice review and good luck!
Agreed! :) thanks so much.
I really like the UAD 88RS channel strip, so I am really interested in this
That makes sense! :)
Out of curiosity - why did you use the Radial DI instead of the built in DI inputs of the preamps? (Bass)
This allowed me to use the splitter so that we could hear both pre’s at the same time.
@@alecbrits ah, makes sense :)
Great comparison! I own both pre’s (and a Manultec Orca Bay too!) and you really can’t go wrong with either one. Beautiful studio and great recording 👍
Thanks so much Mark!! :D they are great units. Been loving the Orca, what a great piece of kit. 👌🏽👌🏽
Excellent
Thanks! :)
@@alecbrits I've got an 88 and a R8 on the way. Can't wait to start messing around with them.
Thanks so much !!! Such a great channel. Do the 1073 500 series and rack sound the same ?
what do you think has more punch and clarity between 1073 lb and api 512c ? cheers
I think the 512C has more clarity. :)
API 512c and API 512v.. but I like the lows on the NEVE 88’s.. I might place some behind the 512v’s and tweak then both
am I missing something...was this an A/B shootout? different instruments were going through different preamps simultaneously, sooo...how do we differentiate per source? too much going on!
I don’t have a preference really. I have purchased the 67’s, but the next purchase will be a pair of 49’s. I am using the re-issue 67.
@@alecbrits :) Awesome! Thanks Alec!
@@alecbrits that’s basically my set up now, pair of FleA 49s and a custom U67. Really want to pair my U67 off.
Love your demo songs. I hope you are working on an EP or album!
Thank you so much! :) I am indeed. Using these videos to motivate the creativity while reviewing some lovely equipment!!
@@alecbrits : Any idea if the 88RLB is closer to the Focusrite ISA One?
I’m doing vocals and guitar, do I need two pre-amp/ compressors?
It does not mean you NEED two, if you are using two mics, then two pre’s will do the trick. You can compress in the DAW till you find what kind of compression works for you.
Does anyone know if the 88rlb gain is stepped or has any notches so you can match stereo mics or line levels?
The 88RLB has continually variable pots.
@@alecbrits Thanks ✌🏻
I like your videos, but may I please make a small request. When doing shoutouts where your recording multiple different sources individually, could you please possibly either make some segments showing just the solo'd sources, or possibly include download files that we could download to listen to ourselves? If not I understand, I know videos like this are alot of work. But either way, great job and I still really like them!
Thanks for the feedback! :)
Hey bro. One Question. Which would you recommend to use on you mix bus running into a bus compressor?
Hey man! :) thanks for the comment, I’d likely just go for a compressor first then see if you need anymore saturation.
@@alecbrits Thanks for the reply brother.
49 or 67? Which is your favorite
@@norwegiansniper9713 one distressor and a quality tube mic.
Moral of the story…we all need a U67
😂 it’s a great mic for sure.
@@jasperdany I have heard of both. :) go with your gut and try stuff out.
I'm just curious: when you say the splitter has iso output then it sounds like that output has a transformer in the signal path. That might alter the signal. It is also possible to do this kind of configuration with just a y-cable. Then it is 100% sure that the signals are identical. Anyway, great video! Keep it up!
Great piece of advice here! I’ll look into a high quality Y cable for future comparisons.
I am curious about these products myself
Thanks for any help
Great vid. Pretty awesome song too.
Thanks so much! :)
Fuck the preamps, great song!
Thanks Victor!
Nice tune man
Thanks Doc! :)
Excellent video
Thank you so much Roland.
Good luck with that and looking forward to hearing it!
Hi! if you had to choose one pair to record mostly stereo acoustic guitars, piano and percussion , like ( bongos, cajon, etc ) which one do you recommend ? RND511 or Neve 88R lb ? thank you very much !
Not too sure! I have not spent much time on the 511, so I can’t comment. Love the 88rlb though.
@@alecbrits Thanks for the advice! i think that's a good call it's appreciated
The 1073 is a little thicker, and the 88 is clearer providing more detail but still having character.
Totally agree! :)
So talented
Thanks Nicolas! :) really appreciate that.
Very nice sound and nice songs !
subscribed and I'll be looking for your music on Spotify. Wow man. Very impressed!
EDIT: peeped the tube driver in the back. I've got one as well :)
